Fifth Graders Participate in Leadership Conference Over the last month, the fifth grade students participated in a “Leadership Conference.” During the conference they learned about the traits of a leader, the traits of a role model, and how they can be a leader and role model right now. This conference was the result of the joint efforts of Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Pasquantonio, and Ms. Lewis, Community Liaison of the Urban-Suburban program. To demonstrate what they had learned the students worked on presentations about leadership. Presentations included raps, essays, game shows, interviews, poems, posters, and news reports. If you see a fifth grader, ask them what it means to be a leader.

Guest Speaker Visits Grade 6 Students During Social Studies On April 1st, the WCMS 6th Grade Social Studies classes welcomed Sampa Lhundup, a woodcarver from Tibet. Sampa has been in the U.S. for a little over three years and came in to

talk about what his life was like back home. He was able to answer students' questions about Buddhism, the Geography of Tibet, and the nomadic lifestyle. Students enjoyed seeing some of his woodcarvings, a collection of Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheels, and a bag full of yak hair! The students enjoyed learning about another part of the world and were able to compare or contrast his experiences with their own life. To learn more about Sampa and to see some of his amazing artwork, please visit: www.tibetanwoodcarver.com

Friday Night Show Highlights Student Talents This past Friday night, the senior class sponsored our annual talent show for the 2013-14 school year. Dylan Rothfuss and Sarah Gaiser did a great job as the MCs for the event. Performances included singing, piano playing, guitar playing, dancing, and cereal eating. Student participants included: Jeannelle MacPherson, Amber Tumia, Maya Miles, Dan Montalvo, Sergio Rosado, Ethan Domina, Alex Blaszyk, Steph Hunter, and Ashlee Miles. Special guest performers were our own Des McNeil from Buildings and Grounds and eight year old Ally Montrois from Spencerport. Thanks to all who participated and Mrs. Hagadorn for organizing the event.

Middle School Students of Character Named Every five weeks we like to take time to recognize students in the Middle School who have consistently demonstrated outstanding character over the course of the school year. This past five weeks we have focused on the character pillar of Citizenship. Some of the ways in which these students have demonstrated citizenship may have been by:

Design and Drawing for Production The students in the Design and Drawing for Production (DDP) classes wrapped up a unit of study on the Geometry of Design that had the students:

calculating the areas and dimensions of different shapes;

calculating the volumes, surface areas, weights, shipping costs, and surface finish costs of different solids; and

formulating parametric dimensions of 3D CAD models (replacing numeric values with simple equations to maintain proportions between geometric features).

The DDP students are just starting their team-based, major problem-solving project, which involves designing, building, and testing a robot arm that interfaces with a standard test environment. The goal is to move a ping pong ball from a perched location to a tube using the power of pressurized water. The two-person teams communicate using Google email, and record their project development work in their engineering notebooks.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) The students in Mr. Handley’s Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) are finishing a unit of study on Industrial Robotics (history, applications, programming methods, and path control). We will soon begin our study of Design for Manufacturability, which involves learning how jigs and fixtures are used to work-hold mass-produced parts within manufacturing processes.

Principles of Engineering (POE) The students in Mr. Handley’s Principles of Engineering (POE) recently completed a unit of study on the physics and applications of Fluid Power (pneumatics, hydraulics, hydrostatics, and hydrodynamics). One of the associated activities involved breadboarding actual pneumatic circuits and documenting them with schematic diagrams. The students are now studying the topic of Kinematics. As part of this study, the students are learning how to use Microsoft Excel to record and analyze a design’s performance, which is a critical step in the engineering design process.
