Students Prepare for 24 Challenge Tournament Students in grades four through six recently participated in play-offs to earn a spot on the Wheatland-Chili 24 Challenge team. The competition was intense as students amazed the proctors with their quick mathematical reasoning skills as they figured out how to manipulate four numbers so that the end result is 24. The team will take on Livonia’s team in June at the 19th annual 24 Challenge Tournament.

Tennis Team Wins Sectionals The boy’s tennis team won their second sectional title in school history this year. Kindergarten Celebrates Memorial Day To celebrate Memorial Day, T. J. Connor Kindergarteners made signs, noisemakers, patriotic bibs, and pom-poms. Then, they paraded around T. J. Connor chanting “Hip,

Hip, Hooray for the USA”. Once again, T. J. Connor students demonstrated their patriotism and support of our veterans.

First Graders Visit Genesee Country Nature Center First Graders recently visited the Genesee Country Nature Center for a spring nature walk. They observed the changes that have occurred at the Nature Center since their visit in the fall. They were able to split into three groups and hike with a guide. The students saw a variety of plants and animals and paid particular attention to the vernal pond. The trip ended with a picnic lunch. The students had a ton of fun learning outside.

Mrs. Wallace’s Class Presents Animal Research The second graders in Mrs. Wallace’s class presented two unique projects stemming from collaborative research they did on animals both in the library and the classroom. Parents were invited to the library on Tuesday, May 27, to watch the students present their Haiku Decks, an online presentation tool similar to PowerPoint, which were created in the library. Parents also were able to read the nonfiction books created

in the classroom in which the students wrote about the animals. The research began in the library and flowed into the classroom making this a great opportunity for the teacher and the librarian to work together. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The students were excited to have their families come to see their hard work and parents were impressed with the work their children did.

Middle School Spring Concert Features Chorus and Bands

On May 15, the Middle School music department presented an evening of performances by students in Grades 6 and 7. The Jazz Band started the night with an improvisational jam plus modern tunes like “Bad Romance” and “Happy”. The Middle School Choir followed up with songs like “Dynamite” and “Fireworks” by Katy Perry. The Grades 6 and 7 Band closed out the show with the numbers “Copacabana” and “Roar”. Special thanks go out to Mrs. McDougall, Ms. Marasco, and Ms. Adams in preparing the students. We appreciate all the hard work and dedication from our students and staff.

SADD Sponsored Mock Crash Reinforces Safety for All The mock crash, which occurred last week, is an activity intended to bring awareness to our students about the dangers of driving under the influence, specifically as we approach the prom and graduation. All juniors and seniors were invited to attend the mock crash or be a participant in the event. Prior to the beginning of the actual simulation, one of our ELA teachers, Ms. Nagle, shared a personal story about how drinking and driving has affected her family. Students were impressed with her

message and realized that this can happen to anyone, at any time. We appreciate Mrs. Bagley, as SADD advisor, arranging the event in conjunction with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Scottsville Fire Department.

T. J. Connor Band and Chorus Perform Spring Concert T. J. Connor’s Fifth Grade Band and Fourth and Fifth Grade Chorus recently performed two concerts, one during the school day for the whole school and the other followed that evening. After performing several numbers, the band

dedicated their last song, “Battle Song”, to David Harriff in honor of his retirement from T. J. Connor after 29 years of inspiring musicians. The Chorus then performed several numbers from “The Lion King”. The song, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” included a solo by Scout Brandes. What an amazing group of talented musicians

we have at T. J. Connor.

Another Successful Memorial Day Parade

The Band students in Grades 5, 6 and 7 joined Mrs. McDougall on the Memorial Day Parade float to play a few patriotic numbers while traveling the parade route. The High School Marching Band also participated, led by Mr. Zimmerman. It was a great day to hear our music program at work and honor those who gave their lives for our country. The ceremony in the village afterwards featured speeches by Samantha Berl, Taylor Combs, and Mr. Zilliox. Our Scottsville community came out in force to show their school spirit and pay respect to our troops.
