Genesee Region All-Stars were Ethan Domina, Nate Dawson, Joshua Hall, and Aaron Brown. The Modified Cross Country team finished up its season with the GR/LCAA Modified Invitational held at Wheatland-Chili on October 21. This event has become a great tradition for all of our competitive schools, giving them the opportunity to compete against each other at one time in one race. To make a more memorable experience, medals are awarded to the top ten competitors, music is playing during the event, and the concession stand is open. Thanks to Mr. Glass and Mrs. Jackett for putting this experience together. The Modified Girls Soccer team concluded its season with a game under the lights on October 23. The girls loved the experience of a game going into overtime, having an announcer for the games, and even playing against one of their former coaches. Thanks to Mr. Peets for creating a memorable last game for the team.

Fall Sports Come to an End

The fall sports season is coming to its conclusion as our athletes look to move indoors to compete in Swimming and Basketball. Here are a few snapshots of our teams’ successes.

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team had a sectional game against Filmore last Thursday. The girls won in four matches, and advanced to the sectional quarterfinals. Although the girls played well, they were unable to beat

Hammondsport on Saturday night, ending their season. The girls finished with a record of 6-11. The team was also recognized as the Genesee Regional team with the best sportsmanship, something that we all are very proud of. The girls also had a Genesee Region All-Star, Senior Breanna Walker.

The Varsity Cross Country team completed its regular season last Thursday at the Genesee Region/Livingston County Athletic Association (GR/LCAA) championship in LeRoy. For the girls, Madeline Vonglis took ninth overall in the division, with Emily Stryker eleventh. For the boys, Aaron

Clark was in tenth place overall, and Alex Hogue was the top runner in the Genesee Region taking first. Hogue, Vonglis, and Clark were all named All-Stars as a result of their performances. The defending

section champion cross country team finishes their season on Saturday at Victor.

The Girls Varsity Soccer team was defeated by rival, Keshequa, at the Class C sectional semi-final game. The girls regular season record was an impressive undefeated 16-0, with an overall record of 17-1. Although the girls are graduating two seniors, they are looking forward to another shot at the sectional championship next year by returning most of their roster. Genesee Region All-Stars for the girls this year

are Hannah Callaghan, Abigael Callaghan, Taylor Clar, and Megan Nolan.

The Boys Varsity Soccer team finished their season Wednesday night with a sectional loss to Bishop Kearney in the Class C2 semi-finals by a score of 2-0. The boys’ regular season record was 14-2, with an overall record of 16-3. The team was second place in Wheatland-Chili Boys’ soccer history in the number of goals allowed in a season, thanks to a strong defense and

goaltending. Genesee Region All-Stars were Ethan Domina, Nate Dawson, Joshua Hall, and Aaron Brown.

The Modified Cross Country team finished up its

season with the GR/LCAA Modified Invitational held at Wheatland-Chili on October 21. T. J. Connor Students Learn about Fire Safety

Over the past few weeks, students at T. J. Connor spent time with Firefighter Glenn Sickles to learn about fire safety. Kindergarten students visited the Fire Department where they learned about calling 911, and how to “stop, drop and roll.” They also got to see an ambulance and fire trucks. First-grade students had Firefighter Sickles visit here at T. J. Connor. They learned about fire safety,

calling 911, and the role of firefighters in our community. Secondgrade students learned about the importance of having a

family plan for fires, how to dial 911 for help, and the importance of firefighters.

Teachers Learn about Project Lead the Way

As part of their science curriculum, kindergarten, second-grade and fourth-grade students will participate in the Project Lead the Way Launch. To get ready for the implementation of this program, Mrs. Emelson

went to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for a week this summer. She then presented what she learned to the kindergarten and second-grade teachers, along with Mrs. Sinsebox,

Curriculum Director, and Mrs. LaCelle, STEM teacher. In

addition to learning about the program, the teachers got to try out some of the kindergarten projects of building

an “egg tower” and designing a paintbrush. We are excited to start these lessons with

our students.

“Get Caught Reading” is Back

We are once again ticketing our students for reading. Get Caught Reading started on Monday, October 27, and runs through Thursday, November 13. Each time a student is caught reading they get

ticketed. The tickets are collected, and at the end of the three weeks, winners will be drawn at random to win a book from the upcoming book fair. In addition to the “Get Caught Reading” program, we also have announcements in the morning over

the PA system about some great new titles. Each day for 12 days leading up to our Book Fair, students will read a book review from a book featured at the fair.

Kindergarten and Second Grade Buddy Up

Mrs. Merritt’s and Mrs. Hotaling’s class buddied up to complete a project. First they read a book about the “Humbug Witch.” Then they buddied up to make their own “Humbug Witches.” Both classes

had a great time and can’t wait to buddy up again.

Make a Difference Day

On Saturday, October 25, the Wheatland-Chili MS/HS Services Clubs joined forces to make a difference for some retired community members. Over 20 students and parents formed teams that raked leaves and cleaned up yards throughout Scottsville. The weather cooperated and we had a beautiful day to help these individuals who have lived and worked in the community for many years. Several of the retirees were so grateful

they brought refreshments out for the kids and took some time to talk with each of the groups about their connection to the community. The students ended the day with some pizza and shared their stories from the morning. We hope to make this a tradition each year.

Rochester Area Colleges Fair

On Monday, October 6, the counseling office hosted the Rochester Area Colleges

Fair in the Library. The 12 colleges from the greater Rochester region include: State Universities (SUNY) -Alfred State, Brockport, Genesee Community, Finger Lakes Community, Monroe Community; and Private Colleges/Universities - Alfred University, Keuka, Nazareth, Roberts Wesleyan, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher, and University of Rochester. Tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders were encouraged to stop down during the 40-minute fair and learn more about the colleges closer to home.

Students were engaged in meaningful conversations and excited to learn about the programs and opportunities at the colleges. The representatives from the colleges always do their best to steer students toward the outcome of their choosing instead of just trying to "sell" their college. We have great relationships with these colleges and hope when students choose their career pathway that remaining in New York State is on the top of their list.

Careers in Construction Day October 23 marked Rochester's 17th Annual Construction Careers Day. WCHS attended the informative Career Day with a handful of eleventh and twelfth

graders. There were a wide variety of construction fields represented, including road construction and

plowing, masonry, cement pouring, and carpentry. Students were able to operate heavy machinery, lay bricks, bend metal, and more, under the supervision of professionals. Representatives from various construction companies were also in attendance, ready to give employment and educational advice to the students. The hands-on component was a critical part to making the day a success. Students

need to see the conditions that construction workers face in working outside in inclement weather and talk

with current union members about the opportunities for advancement starting as an apprentice. Students walked away with a greater appreciation for the skilled trades and construction careers, a growing field in western NY.

FBLA on the Move

Earlier this month, seven members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended the fall district meeting at Bryant and Stratton College in Henrietta with their advisor, Mrs. Hourihan. Students

participated in workshops to learn more about the FBLA organization and how to prepare for competitive events. This helps students see how a larger organization functions and what decisions need to be made to be successful. It also makes connections between information learned in their business

classes and an authentic professional environment. Additionally, students in our Business Law class participated in a tour of the Monroe County courthouse. They were able to observe arraignments, mental health court, and a criminal trial. It was a valuable learning experience for students to

witness our legal system first hand. Later in the year, students will be involved in FBLA competitions to highlight their skills and learning over the course of their high school careers. Thanks to Mrs. Hourihan for leading this group and organizing such

opportunities.
