DELPHOS One is a very familiarfigure on the sidelines, be it football, basketball or whatever spot.

The other is not but soon will be.These are the Athletic Trainers

Certified (ATC) that are prominent in agrowing number of programs.

Tom Lane is beginning his 15th sea-

son as the ATC for St. Johns, whileElizabeth Hughes is in her inauguralseason for Jefferson.

Its much more than taping ankles andicing knees: the job has grown to includerehabilitation, nutrition and other areas tohelp athletes prevent injuries and comeback when they inevitably happen.

Lane began his tenure at St. Johnsfresh out of Bowling Green StateUniversity graduate school.

Hughes worked for five years foran East Coast Hockey League team inKalamazoo, Michigan, before coming toDelphos.

When I first got here, there were onlytwo other teams in the MAC that had anATC; now, all but three have them,Lane, a native of Toledo, began. I hurtmy knee as a 17-year-old in the OlympicSoccer Development program. It becameapparent I was not going to be able tocontinue and through the process of get-

ting my knee taken care of, I ended up atthe Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. The rest, as they say, is history.

He has noticed more than a fewchanges since.

One, the kids are better conditioned, bigger, stronger and faster, which meansthat the injuries are more severe becauseof higher impact, he added. Knee inju-

DELPHOS St. Johns saw their2009 season end just short of its sixthfootball title, falteringliterally in the last sec-onds of the Division VIstate football finals toNorwalk St. Paul.

For 12th-year headman Todd Schulte, hehopes to take one morestep this fall in better-ing his 112-32 overallmark.

His Blue Jays finished 14-1 last fall, including an 8-0 mark in the MidwestAthletic Conference.

With 14 starters returning, expecta-tions abound around the Blue Jay camp. However, Schulte knows full well thatlast year is gone and this year brings itsown challenges.

We have a lot ofexperience with 21

seniors so you hopethat makes a differ-ence. At the same time,we dont want to getcomplacent and assumethat just because wereexperienced means

were automatically going to be success-ful, Schulte said. We know we have the

bulls-eye on our backs and were goingto get everybodys best shot; were goingto have to earn everything we get. Weregoing to have to prepare every game hardand not look ahead. Iknow its coach-speakbut we have to takethem one game at atime.

Six full-time start-ers all seniors are back from anoffense that averaged37.8 points and 284.4yards rushing and 82.0passing per game: lefttackle Austin Vogt (6-4, 270; 12 pan-cake blocks), left guard Joey Grubenhoff6-0, 225; 18), center Alex Recker (6-2,241; 13), right guard Derek Klaus (6-1,220; 11) and former right tackle-turnedtight end Chris Pohlman (6-2, 240); andthird-year starting tail-back Jordan Leininger(6-2, 208; 219 rushes,

1,593 yards, 31 scores;14 catches, 218 yards,2 scores - he starts theyear ranked seventh onthe career rushing listat St. Johns with 2,985yards and fourth on the

spring list with 320 points). As well, Tyler Bergfeld (6-3, 205,

    senior; 20 catches, 508 yards, 6 scores)was a co-starter in the rotation at widereceiver.

    Providing depth in those spots arethe following: lefttackle: seniors KaseyBonifas (6-0, 255) andSeth Knebel (5-11,206), junior AdamHaunhorst (6-1, 183),sophomores AustinWolke (5-10, 172) andAndrew Grothouse(6-0, 210) and fresh-man Spencer Ginter(6-3, 230); left guards:seniors Vinny Wiley (6-0, 230) and JacobRode (5-9, 212), Josh Rode (5-11, 173,junior) and Dylan Stump (5-9, 198, soph-omore); center: Nate Hoffman (6-2, 232,senior), Brice Schulte (5-9, 180, junior),Kent Staup (5-11,195, sophomore) andRyan Shumaker (6-4,215, freshman); right

We have a lot of team speed, espe-cially in the skill posi-

tions. You always wantto be balanced but weknow we want to runthe football, Schultecontinued. Were lotstronger physically, especially up front. Were a year moremature, too, which wehope pays dividends. However, you dontreplace a 3-year starter at quarterback like

Wes just like that. He did so much and wegave him a lot of freedom to audible.

We really run wellto the ball defensively. We want to be aggres-sive and get to the ball.We are strong up themiddle with our tack-les, linebackers andsafeties and werestrong at every level. We have some holes to

fill on both sides of theball but we have someplayers that played quite a bit last yearready to step in.

The defense, which ceded 10.4 points,98.5 yards rushing and 123 yards pass-ing per game, returns eight starters, ledby 2009 Division VI Defensive Player

of the Year Chris Pohlman (Mike line-backer; 83 solos, 58assists), Dancer (Samlinebacker; 63 and 55),strong safety Klausing

DELPHOS The St. Johns crosscountry program has been strugglingwith the numbers game for a number ofyears.

That was a problem for long-time coachJeff Bockey, who decided to step downfrom coaching after last season.

It now is for new coach Steve Hellman, who inherits a program of six total run-ners.

Hellman, who was a member of theSt. Johns Class of 1985, was part of

the programs first-ever Midwest AthleticConference championship in 1984 as a3-year varsity letterman and also was partof the inaugural boys track program in1985.

He was also a 4-year varsity lettermanin cross country and track at what wasthen Bluffton College.

With only four boys and two girls onthe teams this year, we will not be able tocompete as a team in the meets, Hellmannoted. So our goal is to try to improveour individual times as the season goes on.

The runners are working hard this sum-mer, so I look for us to set many personalrecords this year.

Three of the boys are returning let-terwinners: senior 3-year veteran JasonMichel; classmate Chris Goodwin, a

DELPHOS The St. Johns girls golfteam was an experienced unit a year ago, with four of the top five back from the previ-ous season.

This years crew wontbe nearly as experiencedas only two starters returnfrom a district team in2009.

The lone senior, DaniHale (49-stroke averageover 9 holes), has three

    letters prior to this sea-son.

The other veteranis sophomore JessicaRecker (62).

I have two starters returning, so we havesome experience. I think the experienceplays a big part because they know what theyneed to work on to improve their talent,Lady Jay coach Andy Miller said. My oneand only senior, Dani, has a positive attitudewhich helps her learn more about the game. She has been playing the last four years and

she has the ability to do well. She and Jessicaplayed in the districts last year, so theyshould know how tough the competition is inthis area. Overall, I have a fairly young teamwho is willing to learn the game. It will be alearning and rebuilding season for us.

DELPHOS TheSt. Johns girls soc-cer team had a mixed2009 under first-yearcoach John Munoz: theearly part that saw themstruggle to adapt to anew coach and the lat-ter half where thingsclicked much better in a5-10-4 season.

    Munoz hopes that

what he got in the latter part of his initialcampaign is what he gets from his LadyBlue Jays from the start in 2010.

Were able to read the game muchbetter we do that very well andwe know the basics of the game. In highschool, that is where it starts, Munozsaid. We focused last year on the basics, building the foundation of our game withthe technical skills, and we will still dothat. For us, because we dont have that junior high program, any new girls we

bring in we have to start from scratch.Having speed and athleticism is a

nice thing to have but at this level of play, having sound technical skills and under-standing of the game is more important. We teach anticipation skills and knowingwhere play is developing and these girlshave done well with that.

Having seven experienced senior start-ers also helps.

Five of them will be in their thirdseasons at the varsity level: AliciaAnkerman, goalkeeper Samantha Stant the team captains Emma Boggs, BaileyCalvelage and Alyssa Berelsman.

The other duo back for their secondtime as starters: Cassie Schimmoeller andKaitlyn Schwieterman.

The eighth senior is Sarah Shrider. As well, three more are back with

letters from a year ago: junior start-ers Myriah Jackson and Julie Bonifasand key backup Kaitlin Wrasman. We dont have set positions for anyoneoutside of Samantha in goal. What weretrying to do is teach the girls how to becomfortable in any spot on the field andthey are versatile enough to pick up on itquickly, Munoz asserted. We also donthave standard formations; we want to beable to adjust to what our opponents aredoing at any given moment.

Nick Kayser (38.0) and Aaron Miller (45.5).This season should be exciting. We are

comprised of two seniors, six juniors, sixsophomores and two freshman, Klausingnoted. We are returning six lettermen whohave had varsity experience from last year.Being young overall and a new coach, wewill be looking at our experienced assistantscoaches to help the team.

Three juniors will also be vying forplaying time: Arron Honigford, AnthonyBuzzard and Matthew Warnecke.

Five 10th-graders are in the mix: ColeFischbach, Sean Flanagan, Craig Klausing

and Drew Wagner. As well, the two freshmen are T.J

Hoersten and Evan Benavidez. We as a team must get seven to eight

golfers in the varsity rotation so we can bedeep in experience by the start of the yearend tournaments, Klausing added. Theteam should be competitive this year andthe next three years. Having a total of 16members is great for the program. Havingthe coaching staff of three, we are going tohave reserve matches to keep all the golfersinterested in the program.

of last falls sectional- and Midwest AthleticConference-winning unit: Abbey Martin,Morgan Wells and Katie Kundert. As well,a number of players on the team last year didnot come out in 2010, leaving Miller withonly five girls: sophomores Rachel Fisher,Alicia Joseph and Megan Martin.

These girls will have some big shoes tofill with the graduation of Abbey, Morganand Katie. If they work at it, they will do

well, Miller added. One goal this year is to

finish in the middle of the league but it willbe difficult. When we play the MAC teams, all of the golfers will need to play theirA game. Again, the MAC will be verycompetitive this year. I can see Parkway,Minster and St. Henry battling for first placewith Versailles in the running.

The big weakness this year, like always,is the short game. Chipping and putting areareas we need and will improve on by theend of the season. I dont like to see any-

thing over 2 putts per hole.

    Golf unit

gram, too. We re-instituted the soccercamp this summer and had great response. We had a Futsal program for little kidsand that also had excellent response. Weretrying to start up a program on the lower

levels and trying to spread the word. The Jays bid adieu to midfielders

Morgan Haines, Shonda Bensman andKayla Wrasman and forward TatumMauk, who depleted their eligibility.

Stepping into the lineup due tohaving the eight seniors, Munoz expectsto give his younger girls playing time toget a start on next year while still focus-ing on this fall are juniors CourtneyGrothouse, Kristie Grothouse and AbbyMartin; sophomores Alyssa Gable, Kelsey

Pohlman and Madison Flack; and fresh-men Madison Kreeger and SamanthaBonifas.

One area we have to shore up is thelong game. We want to have ball con-trol and possession but you also have tobe able to quickly counterattack when

the chance presentsitself, Munoz added. The other thing wewant to focus on ishaving fun for the

girls. We want tospread the word; ifonly others could seehow much fun thesegirls have together, working hard on the

field, they would beimpressed. These girls truly do enjoybeing with each other and that makes

everything a lot easier for us.The motto weve chosen

for this year is Impossible isNothing.

    Assisting Munoz in the

coaching ranks are KristyHasenkamp and Nick Shrider.

St. Johns has already openedits season against St. MarysMemorial August 24. All itshome matches this fall will beheld at the vacant lot near St.Johns Cemetery.

3-year veteran; and Todd Rode, a junior2-year veteran.

Jason was the number one runner lastyear and will look to improve his timesand continue as the number one runner thisyear, Hellman explained. I am lookingfor Chris to improve his times from last

year. Todd is working hard this summer toimprove his times from last year. The lone girls veteran is Julia Dickman,

a 2-year veteran. The only two newcomers are freshmen:

Aaron Hellman for the boys and MeganJoseph for the Lady Blue Jays.

The lone departure from a year ago wasMary Bemis.

Julia is working on trying to improveon the times she had during her freshmanyear, Hellman added. I look for Aaron tocompete with Jason to be the number onerunner this year. Megan Joseph finishedsixth in the MAC junior high race; I lookfor her to improve on that this year in thehigh school race.

I also have four junior high runners thisyear that are showing some promise for futureyears. They are Alex Odenweller, AnthonyHale, Curtis Pohlman and Anna Mueller.

I look for Minster, Coldwater andVersailles to be the top boys and girlsteams in the league this year.

DELPHOS Jefferson second-year gridironcoach Larry BubLindeman will be onthe defensive thisfall as he is bankingon eight returningregulars on that sideof the ball and plen-ty of lettermen tocarry the day for his

    Wildcats throughout2010.

The Red and White finished 2009 6-4(5-3 in the Northwest Conference).

That defense ceded 20.4 points and271.3 yards (166 rushing) per game.

Were really looking for our defenseto carry us based on their experiencefrom last fall. Thekids should be muchmore comfortable

in the system andthus should be muchmore aggressive,Lindeman noted. We want them to

just be able to playquickly instead of

having to think and react and theyshould be able to do that. In particular,in the 4-3, our linebackers should be

able to flow much more easily to theball because our linemen will occupythe blockers.

With the workwe did in the off-season, not onlygetting bigger andstronger but moreathletic and quick-er, we should bemuch more physi-cal this fall, as well

as speedier. Were ayear older. That should help us be ableto play at a faster clip; instead of react,we should be able to be more active.

That Wildcat 4-3 defensive scheme(adjusted from a 3-4 to start last fall)returns captain AJ Cross (5-10, 202,senior; 67 solo stops, 26 assists) forhis third season atone tackle and eitherZach Morris (5-4,

    140, senior; 7 and9) or captain JustinBame (5-10, 214,senior; 52 and 23) atthe other, 3rd-yearlettermen and cap-tains Logan Bonifas

    (6-2, 174, senior; 44 and 20, 3 picks)at free safety and cornerback RyanEbbeskotte (6-1, 163, senior; 27 and

    12, 6 picks), Jacob Leach (5-11, 188,senior; 50 and 22, 10 for loss) at oneend, captain andthird-year lettermanMitchell Antalis(6-1, 188, senior;33 and 13) at strongsafety, 2-time letter-man Zak Lumpkins(5-10, 193, senior;59 and 24) at mid-dle linebacker and

Jordan Vorst (5-11,190, senior; 31 and 11) at outside line-backer.

Curtis Miller (6-1, 203, junior; 16and 4) settles in at the other outsidelinebacker. Letterman Shayn Klinger(5-8, 164, junior) or newcomer NickDunlap (5-10, 174,

junior) steps in atthe other corner spotand letterman Kody

Richardson (6-3,219, senior) at theother end spot.

Also in the mixup front are letter-man Justin Rode(5-8, 183, junior)

at tackle, with sophomore newcomerQuinten Wessell (5-11, 228) providing

    See WILDCATS, page 17

There are three keys toour season. The first is

how quickly our offensiveline can get settled andplay well together. The

second is how quickly wefind leaders on this teamand have the new starters

get adjusted to the var-sity level. We have a great

group of seniors to helpget everybody on the same

page. The third is whatany coach at the Division

V and VI level knows: youmust stay healthy. So far,we have avoided injuries. That is where the weights

    and the offseason condition-

ing can come into play. Bub Lindeman

The second is how quickly wefind leaders on this team and have thenew starters get adjusted to the varsitylevel. We have a great group of seniorsto help get everybody on the samepage.

The third is what any coach atthe Division V and VI levelknows: you must stayhealthy. So far, we haveavoided injuries. That iswhere the weights and theoffseason conditioning can

DELPHOS Jeffersons girls soccerteam finished 6-9-1 a year ago for first-yearhead coach Lindsey Drerup.

She is cautious in her appraisal of hersecond year as she returns six starters and10 letterwinners from that Lady Wildcatedition.

She is banking onincreased understandingof the game of soccer forcontinued and evenbetter success.

We have six juniorsand one senior who haveall played thus far intheir high school career. They know the game, they understand what Iwant and expect from them as a coach andthey are well aware of what is in store forthem as far as what kind of teams they willencounter during the season, she noted. All of these girls are pretty versatile. Thereis not one girl on the squad that is not will-ing or capable of confidently competing atany field position. They all understand thecircumstances that we are under, (Assistantcoach) Kiel Diller and I need the girls to beable to move from a forward to defensiveposition at the drop of a hat and they havebeen very open to testing the waters in otherareas on the pitch. I admire that.

We will be look-ing for some players to step into action and be key contribu-tors right away. This group of girls works hard both on andoff the court and it should be an enjoyable year, Merschmannoted. Our goal this year is to win NWC and have fun atwhat they love to do play volleyball. This is the first yearto have a freshman team and it is also looking well, with somereally good athletes who could possibly be capable of moving

DELPHOS Jeff Jostpille headed up the Jeffersonboys golf program for the better part of a decade, puttingtogether some quality teams.

Now its Chad Brinkmans turn to try his hand in theWildcat links program.

However, he wont have 2008state qualifier Austin Clarkson(now golfing at the University ofNorthwestern Ohio), along with2010 graduates Chad Hoersten andDru Leach.

A number of others chose not to

go out this fall, leaving Brinkmanwith fewer options. He only has one letterman back

from the 2009 team in third-yearsenior Matt Waldick.

With only one senior in Matt, we are lacking overallexperience, Brinkman said. Tyler Miller (junior), A. J.Teman (junior), Alex Garza (junior) and Jordan Violet(junior) played last year and have jumped up to thevarsity. A pair of sophomores have also made varsity intheir first seasons out in the sport: Nick Gallmeier andTyler Wrasman; they are young but have a lot to add tothe team.

I expect us to have a lot of improvement throughoutthe year and gain valuable experience heading into thetournament.

The other two members of the Wildcat roster areDylan Nagel and Alex Ketchum.

In the Northwest Conference, Lima Central Catholicis at the top. As a first-year coach, I hope to have arespectable record in the league, Brinkman added.

However, its not going to be as easy asall that as six highly-veteran seniors gradu-ated, including 4-year starting goalkeeperJessica Bland (256 stops a year ago) and

    top goal-scorer Megan Moreo (25 goals,102 shots-on-goal).

The other departures include BrittanyGarza (defense), Jeanie Ross (midfield),Adrian Kimmet (midfield) and AshleySimerly (defense; struggled with an ankleinjury much of the year).

Plus, being down three players from ayear ago (15 this year vs. 18 a year ago)leaves Drerup with less options for2010.

Unlike last season, we have a shallowbench of 16 players. That is going to be

a struggle, especially in the first fewweeks of the season; getting their legs, endurance and frame of mind readyfor this season, she continued. They allknow what they are in for and frankly,I think theyve shown more dedication and

unity now than Ive seen before, butit is going to be hard to keep everyonehealthy and injury-free until the end ofOctober.

    But you will have injuries in any sport;

that is a given. We will just learn to adaptto the situation. The graduating class of2010 took our goalie, Jessica Bland, whowas fantastic. We have to rebuild a solidset of keepers.

The seven main returnees include thelone senior, Alex Rostorfer (defense);and juniors Cassidy Bevington (midfield/defense), Hayley Drerup (midfield/defense),Megan Gilden (midfield/defense), CarlaHorstman (midfield/forward), HannahKleman (midfield) and Elizabeth Schosker(forward; 6 goals).

Gilden and Schosker will serve as teamcaptains for 2010.Schosker will need to provide more

offense for the unit, along with letterwin-ners such as sophomores Sydney Drerup(forward) and Rachel Miller (forward/mid-field) and promising freshman Makayla

Binkley (forward). The 10th veteran is sophomore Jenna

    Moreo (midfield/defense).Paige Miller (goalkeeper/midfield)

stands as the heir apparent to replace Bland

in goal for the Lady Wildcats. As well, sophomores Corrine Metzger(midfield) and Courtney VanSchoyk(midfield) and new freshman Darian Kill(defender) round out the roster.

Some goals I have for this seasonand for this team primarily concentrateon finding a good harmony between theoffensive and defensive sides of thegame to transition quickly, make smartchoices on the field and, most of all, communicate. I want to find an offensethat works good with the girls that I plan to

have up front, something tailored to theircapabilities, coach Drerup added. I wantthem to stay healthy. Ive been trying topush proper hydration, stretching, goodnutrition; anything to keep them healthyand injury-free. We cannot afford anyinjury or illness.

This season will be definitely a rebuild-ing year. Losing six key players lastyear is tough and not having incomingunderclassmen to fill their big shoes iseven tougher. However, I think this team

has a history of being the underdog, soeven though we have just enough tofield a team and then some, I think thestamina of these ladies will pull themthrough. I have a great bunch of upper-classman that have so much enthusiasm forthis sport and their school, as well as somenew and old underclassman that diligentlywork hard and play hard every time theycondition, practice, you name it. Thusfar in the season, Im pleased with them;however, theres always room for manyimprovements.

Any team we come across is a team tolook out for. I do not underestimate any-body. Every match sets another challengein front of us and well just take the seasonone step at a time.

    Lady Wildcats

    (Continued from page 20)

    New coach

    Shobe Hamilton Klausing

right up. Given this being her first season, it will

take some time for the Wildcats to adjustto Merschmans style of attack on bothoffense and defense, especially since shewont have six very experienced departures

    from the 2009 record-setting season.

    That includes a pair

of 4-year starters: JennaMiller (setter/outside hit-ter) and Mallorie Wilson(setter/middle hitter).

    Two morefinished withthree var-sity letters:S t e p h a n i eBlockberger (outside hitter) andStacey Blockberger (outside hit-ter).

    Two more helped set the

defensive tone for the Wildcatsa year ago and graduated withtwo letters each: libero CourtnieRostorfer and Tiffany Culp(defensive specialist).

    Still, this edition of Lady

Wildcat volleyballerswill have a wealth ofupperclassmen with let-

terwinners in MorganFischbach (5-6 seniorhitter), Melissa Shobe(5-7 hitter), ShelbiBrown (5-5 hitter) andAmanda Hamilton (5-7hitter).

As well, seniorLauren Claypool (5-5defensive specialist/hitter) and sophomoreFallon Van Dyke (5-4 setter/hitter) come infor increased expectations in jumping from

junior varsity to the varsity level.

Two others will comprise the remain-der of the varsity roster: junior NadineClarkson (5-4 hitter) and junior KelseyGoodwin (5-5 hitter).

The junior varsity unit, headed up byBarb Prince, has Clarkson, Goodwin,

Van Dyke; sophomoresAlyssa Miller (5-7 hit-ter), Caitlin Landwehr

    (5-6 hitter), BreannaStrayer (5-1 defensivespecialist/hitter) andKayla Kill (5-2, hit-ter/setter); and fresh-men Katie Goergens(5-9 hitter) and RileighStockwell (5-5 hitter).

FORT JENNINGS Fort Jennings head girlssoccer coach fielded a Lady Musketeer squad thatfinished 12-5-3 a year ago, including 1-2-1 in thealways-competitive Putnam County League.

With eight returning starters and two otherletterwinners back from a team that reached thedistrict finals in Division II, he expects to addmore than a few Ws to his 8-year coachingmark of 93-52-15.

Our strengths start with returning those eightstarters that have a lot of knowledge of the game.Seven of them combined for 44 of our 56 goalsfrom last season, another big plus, Wagnerasserted. These girls also had 12 of our 20

assists. We are returning a lot of speed, plus havea lot of girls coming into the program that arevery talented both offensively and defensively.

We have two goalkeepers that have varsityexperience and one of the two started the firsthalf of the season when our senior keeper wasinjured.

One of those the Musketeers lost from last fallwas 2-year starting netminder Megan Schimmoeller, who missed time last fall due to injury.

As well, a pair of fullbacks: 3-year veteranAshley Amstutz and 2-year Kristi Kennedy; andtwo midfielders: 3-year starters Stacie Chandlerand Katie Von Lehmden; are gone from thatteam.

As always, keeping players in uniform, aswell as finding replacements for those whograduated and rebuilding all-important chemistryare keys for Wagner.

As with any team, the health of the teamduring the season is crucial. We were lucky lastseason and only had a couple of minor injuries,he continued. We lost one of the starting fresh-men from last season to a summer ACL injuryand we have a couple girls with minor injuries

from other activities they were participating induring the summer.

Another concern is getting the girls to play

together as a team. Also, once they are on thefield, we dont want to be too predictable.Back to make sure that does not happen are

the likes of fourth-year seniors Alyssa Piasecki(fullback), Lauren Verhoff (forward) and TaylorWallenhorst (midfielder), third-year seniorMindy Merricle (fullback) and veteran MelissaKrietmeyer (fullback).

Two juniors: third-year midfielder MorganSchroeder and veteran Kelsey Von Lehmden(goalkeeper); as well three experienced sopho-mores: Macy Schroeder (forward), Kristen Maag(midfielder) and Lori Bruskotter (fullback); arealso back to lend a hand.

Several players cut their teeth on a junior

varsity level a year ago and are primed and readyto add their talents to Wagners mix: juniorsGina Clay (midfield/forward), Cassie Kaverman(midfielder) and Andrea Heitmeyer (fullback/for-ward), who each earned two JV letters; and soph-omores Gina Stechschulte (fullback), Jenna VonSossan (midfielder), Marissa Mesker (forward),Elaina Maag (midfielder), Katlin Stechschulte(midfielder), Martina Weems (midfielder), MaraBrown (midfielder) and Gabbie German (goal-keeper).

As well, a boatload of newcomers to the highschool roster will continue to allow Wagner tohave a junior varsity and give the youngstersfurther development as they make the adjust-

ment from junior high to high school: sopho-more Brittany Inkrott (midfielder); and fresh-men Alyssa Schimmoeller (forward), AshleyGable (midfielder), Cassie Horstman fullback),Emily Grone (forward), Jamie Saum (midfielder),Marisa Good (midfielder), Nicole Ricker (mid-fielder/fullback) and Stephanie Korte (forward).

We have the most girls going out for ourprogram then we have ever had in the historyof the program. We have a lot of talent in the

younger classes that could challenge the startersfor a position, he added. We have a lot of hard-nosed soccer players; all we have to do is honesome of their skills. We have strengths in all keypositions and girls that know how to put the ballin the back of the net.

The PCL is always tough for us because weplay three of our four league games in the secondand third week of the season. We lost a lot of tal-ent from last years team; if we can get the girlsplaying together, we may finally have a chance.Continental has always been tough in the past;they may be down a little this season because oflosing some very good starters but Coach (Toby)Bidlack always has a way of getting his team

prepared for theseason. Kalida has a very good team under

Coach (Dave) Kehres; they did not lose manystarters from last season. They were strong in just about every position. Miller City wase ableto come back in games last season. They wereable to turn things up in the second half. The girlsnever quit and loved to play physical. They lostsome key players after last season. Ottoville is ateam that moved the ball well last year and put itto us in our league game last season.

Assisting Wagner in the coaching duties areJim Buettner and Jason Wagner.
