    CHAPTER 2 :HISTORICAL REVIEW

    PARLE BISCUITS PRIVATE LIMITED

Parle-G or Parle Glucose biscuits, manufactured by Parle Products Pvt Ltd, are one of themost popular biscuits in India. Parle-G is one of the oldest brand names as well as thelargest selling brand of biscuits in India. For decades, the product was instantly recognized

by its iconic white and yellow wax paper wrapper with the depiction of a young girl on thefront. Counterfeit companies have attempted to recreate and sell lower quality products ofsimilar names with virtually identical package design.

    2.1 Origin of Parle-G

A small village located at about 3 miles from Bandra where people used to fish and farm to

sustain and take care of their day today lives. Many of them embraced Christianity and weredisciplined under the strict laws of the church. Cosmopolitan culture was established duringthe British era. BB and CI railways started between Virar to Colaba on 19th April 1867.Eventually Vile Parle got separated into eastern and western zones. A village named Padlenear Santacruz and Irle near Andheri and the station named VidlaiPadlai led to the nameVile Parle. In this village, there was huige colony of Christians named as padale. Currentsouthern village region has the Bhandarwada as an independent colony. The old road nearBhandar Wada and Padale joint the Sahar village via bullock carts. Hence there is a railwaycrossing at Padale.

    2.2History of Parle - G

A long time ago when the British ruled in India , a small factory was set up in the suburbsof Mumbai manufacture sweets and toffees. The year was 1929 and the market wasdominated by famous international brands that were imported freely. Despite the odds andunequal competition, this company called PARLE PRODUCT, survived and succeeded byadhering to his quality and improvising from time to time.

  • 8/2/2019 Apni Report

    13/20

Biscuit Factory was started in 1929, ShriNarottamMohanlalChavan returned from Germanyand applied the confectionary knowledge from his trip to setting up their own factory whichis now world renowned.

Few years later, in 1939, Parle Product began manufacturing biscuits, in addition to sweets

and toffees having already established a reputation for quality, the Parle Brand name grewin strength with this diversification. PARLE GLUCOSE and PARLE MONACO were thefirst brand of biscuit to be introduced which later went on to become leading name for greattest and quality. That time only one building was having in Vile-Parle where they weremaking production and any other process. Then gradually that company expanded in many

buildings and today that company located in 14 Acres area. That time they weretransporting their products only by cycle.

Brand Parle-G dominates the volume-dominated biscuit market. Even at a time whenmultinationals are beefing up their operations and trying to change the dynamics of themarket, Parle-Gs numerouno position is unchallenged. Its competitors have roped insuperstars like King Khan and Sachin Tendulkar, but Parle-G has only gone from strength

    to strength.

2.4H ow Parle made biscuits affordable to all?

Biscuits were very much a luxury food in India, when Parle began in production in1939. Apart from Glucose and Monaco biscuits Parle did offer a wide variety of brands. However, during the 2nd World War all domestic biscuits production was diverted to assistthe Indian soldiers in India and the far east. Apart from this the shortage of wheat in thosedays, made Parle decided to concentrate on the more popular brands, so that the peoplecould enjoy the price benefits. Thankfully today, theres dearth of ingredients and demand

for more premium brands is on the rise. Thats why Parle now have wide range of biscuitsand mouthwatering confectionaries to offer.

Parle popular biscuit is primarily eaten as a tea-time snack. The goal of this biscuit brandwas and is to manufacture and sell sweets and candies. Now, the Parle name has spread inall directions and has won international fame.

    2.5Significance of G in Parle G

The company's slogan is G means Genius. The name,"Parle-G", is derived from the name of the suburban rail

station, Vile Parle which in turn is based on village Parle inolden days (there is also area called Irle nearby where theParle Agro production factory is based).G for Genius has been Parle-Gs positioning line since2004. In 2006-07, the line was changed to HindustankiTaakat, to assume a bigger platform as the biscuit that stands for strength (taakat) in andfor India. But in early 2008, Parle-G reverted to its G for Genius line with a little twist Do Genius.
