The first part of the brief involved me taking the television show and giving it a new identity. I named the product line ‘DARKPLACE’, this gave the product range a link with Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace without stepping on it’s toes. For this I created a typographic mark for the show. The mark referenced arcade games of the 1980’s and with it I designed a supporting uppercase alphabet. A huge part of the identity is the character illustrations. Simplifying them down to flat characters was my intention, this would enable the characters to be made into collectable figurines with relative ease.

A maverick doctor haunted by the demons of his past. Dagless is an ex-warlock, having renounced the occult in favour of the stability of the medical profession. A veteran of ‘Nam and the Falklands, he now specialises as a paedeatrician and dreams of one day completing the Darkplace Dagless Kiddy Wing. Following the tragic deaths of his three wives, six brothers, four children, and various pets/best buddies, Dagless wages a one man war against scum, freeloaders and the forces of darkness, whilst dealing with the burden of day-to-day admin. He is also a tireless campaigner for the re-introuction of the death penalty.

Dagless’ boss, professional ball-buster and former POW in Korea, forced by his injuries into pushing paper behind a desk. Reed longs to be back on the ward with the young bucks, but his hands are tied with constant pressure from the Fifth Floor and Won Ton. A gifted marksmen, he is still haunted by the memories of his 832 confirmed kills. A pioneering expert in “sack surgery”, Reed is also a tireless campaigner for the re-introduction of the death penalty.

Hot-shot surgeon Sanchez served alongside best buddy Dagless in ‘Nam and the Falklands. A student of martial arts and Eastern lore, he has pledged a sacred oath to uphold justice, which he often keeps. When he isn’t flirting with nurses in the operating theatre. Sanchez can usually be found administrating bed baths or local anaesthetics to female patients. An expert fencing instructor and masseuse, he is the only surgeon allowed to drive a motorbike on the ward.

Lady doctor with psychic powers. Liz joins Dagless’s team after seeing Hell opening beneath Darkplace Hospital. Able to perform stunning feats of tel-ekinesis, Liz is never theless afflicted with emotional instability, like most women. Despite having slept with Dagless on numerous occasions, Liz has yet to form any kind of mean-ingful relationship with her hero. Dagless refuses to acknowledge their intimacies in public, and Liz hopes in vain to one day arrange a meeting somewhere other than the rear seat of his buggy.

The figurine has been the focal pont of the project. Unfortunately the casting of the model did not work and thus I am submitting a base plasticine mould. The final figurine will be made out of polyvinyle chloride which will allow for a lightweight model. This will be mass produced using injection moulding, a process I couldn’t afford, or gain access to with my limited budget. The figurine will come with a couple of extras, one being the fold-out bio poster, the other being an access card. The bio/poster will give an introduction to each of the characters, whilst the access card will function as a portal to the digital side of the Darkplace products. There will be a total of 4 Darkplace figurines in the first run of production, these being; Dr. Rick Dagless, Dr. Lucien Sanchez, Dr. Thornton Reed and Dr. Liz Asher.

The main clothing aspect of the project for me was a t shirt design. The t shirt will be packaged in paper packaging for sustainability. The t shirt will be accompanied with a poster/insert. This will function as a packaging stiffener as well as an extra product for the audience to have.

The digital component of the project. This can be accessed through using the access card supplied with the figurine packaging. The website will offer a range of desktops that will be sized for the screens of all devices from smart phones to home computers. This gives the user a Darkplace product to have on their computer, and all the better that is free of charge upon purchase of the figurine.
