(1/5 ) Brief 6 :Beth Owen branding and identity

Beth Owen is a fashion based

    photographer specialising in

    studio portraiture and the behind

    the scenes documentation of

    fashion based events.

    In the world of photography,

other than a small website Beths

    visually recognized Identity is

    almost nonexistent. Throughout

my final Major project I derived

and produced a concept for her

identity applying it to a series of

    different deliverables, trying to

    gain her recognition and build

    visual foundations with a range

of print, to gain her business and

    custom.

    I questioned and explored and

    pondered on what behind the

    scenes actually meant, research-

ing and concluding that it is the

idea of a sneak preview, a short

glimpse, a peak at something yet

    to be revealed.

Seeing the entirety of a full ob-

    ject means youre viewing 100%

    of that given subject. Imagining

a sneak preview or a glimpse as

a percentage would be alike to

seeing 30% or less of a subject. I

started to play on revealing and

    restricting different characters

    to communicate her passion for

    behind the scenes photography.

The branding to the left was cre-

ated using the typeface Otama, I

    wanted a feminine serif typeface

    to communicate elegance and

    femininity. Adding swoops to the

brackets of the Es and rolling thetop of the O into the H brought

    the brand together, reducing

    sharpness of the characters and

    created a central viewing point

for your eyes to focus on.

To run alongside my clients final

exhibition and end of year show

I decided to produce her a fold

    out information booklet, inform-

    ing people attending the exhibi-

tion of her skills and interestswithin photography.

    The continuation of the paral-

    lelogram concept can be seen

    throughout this piece of promo-

tional print, from die cut windows

    revealing imagery inside, to the

layout and restrictions on herimages. I want the behind the

    scenes concept to subtly run

    across all of her deliverables

so that the shape as a brand

    becomes recognized as Beth

    Owen.

    I used a 120gsm matte bulk

newspaper print to give the print

    durability but quality when han-

dled by an audience. I paid close

    attention to stock choice and

    print quality in the hope

I designed Beths Identity to fit

within the constraints of a 30 de-

    gree parallelogram, The colour

    scheme for her business cards

    reflects her vibrant and exciting

personality whilst at the sametime relates to the bold strong

colours she uses within her own

    work.

I wanted to create a business

    card that clients and contacts

want to keep, not just put to one

side, the uniqueness of its shape

enhances and works to this affect.

    When attending interviews and

meetings with clients Beths wants to

represent herself to a high standard as

a photographer by acting and look-

    ing professional. First Impressions are

everything, I decided to emboss Beths

leather portfolio with the branding I

produced, creating a leather band than

runs round the entire sleave display-

ing her brand across an object that is

    intended for viewing.

Essential for interviews is a CV,

within Beths portfolio I created a

sleeve to contain Beths CV and

organized her type in terms of

    hierarchy. Fluent consistent use of

type and layout is something Ive

focused on to try and tie all the

    deliverables together.

The Business card holders to the

right were created by laser cut-

ting a series of patterned circles

    into card.

They follow my theme of hiding

    and revealing but simply work

    visually to give the business

cards somewhere to sit within the

    portfolio without getting lost.

    Sitting besides Beths pull out

    promotional poster Ive designed

    and hand-made a look book

as seen above. This is going to

    sit besides her exhibition for

viewers to flick through and gainmore information on Beth as a

    photographer.

The look book is 24 full pages of

behind the scenes shots not be-

ing used in her final exhibition,

every other page contains a para-

    graph about the theme behind

    her photography and exhibition.

I kept the shape of the book the

same as the business cards and

    parallelogram Ive attached to

Beths Identity to keep the look

    book exciting and visually

    intriguing in terms of format.

The stock choice also reflects the

business cards using a violet pur-

ple front cover and mint green

    inlay.

mafly for the release of his first

    EP with Californian record Label

    n5MD recordings launching in

    September 2013.

Design Artwork that can be usedacross a range of deliverables

and explores the title of the E.P

    perspectives and the notion of

    ones life in perspective. The

    overall range of deliverables is

going to be sold online aimed

at fans of chilled, slow relaxing

    modern electronic music and is

to be sold as a consistent pack.

    Sigmafly is a personal friend

    and Ive dedicated time to

listening to his music as Ive

grown up, so I started this

brief with passion as I felt

as a designer I could really

    understand and relate to my

    subject.

The capital sigma symbol, is used

    to indicate summation, or the

Sum of the series of terms

    that follow.

    The concept for the release

    of Sigmaflys E.P in Septem-

ber derivatives from the wordSigmas definition:

Aer research into the historyo the sigma symbols meaningand its where it originated romI started to experiment with Ro-man Numerals and charactersassociated withRoman Mathematics.

Te seri characters howeverdidnt relate to his modernelectronic genre o music andI ound that using a sans seritypeace was much more appro-priate.

I decided to play on this deni-tion ocusing on naturally oc-curring patterns in light. My cli-ent wanted me to approach thisbrie thinking about perspec-tives and ones lie in motion. Iphotographed a series o highpower laser pens over a longexposure to capture some ratherunusual lense are created bythe uctuating characteristicso the lasers. Te idea beingwe misconceive many aspectso lie and sometime the mostbeautiul things go unnoticed.

Te repeating patterns andcircular spirals created by thelens are inspired me to keepthis theme o repetition throughSigmays branding and releasepack.

His branding was created sothat the viewer creates ruleswithin his mind when viewingit. By starting a basic patterntaking one o the charactersand repeating it on its axis, theviewer has a simply pattern he/she can decode the structureor.

I produced 3 diferent manipu-lations o Sigmays branding, one to be used on his singlerelease Recurring Faces, one tobe used across his CD and vinyl, and one boxed logo as seen tothe right used or additionalbuttons.

Te concept or the brand-ing works around repetition, repeating shapes and charactersto show motion and to place an

idea in the viewers head thatthere could be additional sec-tions to the pattern added.

The vinyl sleeve below has be

    made to house Sigmaflys 12

release. I printed this on A1

    GFsmith 160gsm white card, and

    used imagery created from pho-

    tographing and manipulating pat-

terns in lense flare to completelycover the sleeve.

I wanted the sleeve to be as

minimal as possible to allow sim-

plicity to intrigue and ponder on

    the audiences mind rather than

    bombarding them with logos.

Below is a complete CD I de-

    signed and produced. Consistent

to the rest of Sigmaflys release I

used the same textures and pat-

terns as previous using them to

span across the front and reverse

    of the covers.

The back cover of the CD in-

    cludes credits to his producer

    and collaborative partners and

    track listing.

All type has been done in Helvet-

ica with wide kerning to separate

    out the characters individually, I

    thought this also relates to

    repetition and singularity.

Sigma character and how its used

    along with a track listing.

    When taking to commercial print

this will be printed on Gloss

stock double sided rather than on

matt to retain the richness of the

not revealing too much inor-mation other than its date.

This brief was a collaboration be-

tween me and Oliver Cassell and

I really got stuck into researching

    our subject matter thoroughly.

    Egypt and Egyptology surround-

    ing the pyramids presents so

    many different opinions and

theories that there was so much

date to collate. We defined our

    roles into Oliver dealing with

type and Layout and me to focus

    on research, Illustration and Im-

    age making.

I went to three different cities to

    three different museums and con-

    ducted interviews trying to get

as much subject matter to draw

    from and information to formulate

    opinions upon.

    The publication we produced is

intended to be released at the

    museum of Leeds and contains

    information surrounding the

    Pyramids and their relationship

    with sacred geometry.

All of the illustrations and dia-

grams used in the book were

    hand drawn and then digitally

    rendered, I kept the illustra-

tions as simple as possible using

    straight lines and pointillism to

    create shadow.

    The Outer sleeve was created

using a marble wash stock to imi-

tate the colour and texture of thelandscape surrounding the pyra-

mids. Throughout the spine of the

book is a die cut triangle, imitat-

ing the sheer angles of Pyramid

Khufu. The shape sits align to our

    layout inside and diagrams.

The bind is hand sown through

4 holes and attaches through a

leather imitation stock set to sit

along the spine of our book.

    The illustrations I produced

relate to different sections of our

    publication including Mythology,

    culture weapons and tools.

    Alongside our publication we

    needed to promote the book

    launch and event. The tickets

    above were produced to imitate

    old Egyptian Arabic stamps, and

    would be distributed with our

publication and flyers as seen on

    the right.

The tickets are printed on a

120gsm matt card and the per-

    forated. The scarab stamp will

be pressed onto the ticket at the

events doors to grant entry. I cre-

ated the scarab stamp to the right

using 3mm plywood and the laser

    cutter.

    lustrations I produced for the

    publication working with a

    selection of the different sacred

shapes talked about in our sacred

    geometry chapter. The 2 colour

    scheme works with light yellow

and a pale blue to reflect the two

main colours seen in the faded

    hieroglyphs of Pyramids.

    create a skateboarding division

    within the U.K.

    Investigate the current skate-

    boarding scene, to establish, a

range of innovative skateboard-ing products, to be sold along-

    side the brands other range.

    Design a skateboarding event

    around these products to cel-

    ebrate their release.

I wanted to keep the branding

very minimal and legible but at

the same time imitate sign writ-

ing. I used gill sans with thick

strokes and a drop shadow to cre-

ate a vintage sign tone of voice.

    After researching northern skate-

    boarding culture and its associ-

ated groups I began to notice a

    big difference between northern

    and southern skateboarders.

    Northern skateboarding, is gri tty,

    its about drinking cans, going

out even if its raining and be-

ing part of a team committed to

their hobby. Leeds has a thriving

    skateboarding scene born out of

    shops alike to Welcome, Chimp

and Hip who focus on building

strong client connections and abrotherhood of skateboarders.

    I sketched and developed a

pigeon as the face of The Uni-

    verses Pupils to represent gritty

    Northern skateboarding, Pigeons

are rats with wings, as an emblem

I thought this was really appro-

    priate.

The application of the design to

    the skateboard would be com-

pleted using clear vinyl, this is a

    process Ive experimented with

throughout the brief but comes at

a price, for the end of year show

I intend on taking these designs

    to print.

    Imitating the crests of Northern

ales and beers I crested an oval

crest for my design to sit within, I

thought this would also tie in with

my concept for the way I wanted

    to depict Northern skateboard-

    ing.

    The skateboards above

    would be distributed as priz-

es for the best skater at my

    proposed event, This would

    help to promote recognition

    for the clothing brand The

    Universes Pupils.
