The contributions of the late photojournalist Elijar Mushi-ana will be remembered when his family, fellow congregants, friends and community mem-bers gather to mark the end of his mourning period next Saturday (1 August).

The ceremony, titled U bvula dzinguvho in Tshivenda, is tra-ditionally performed 12 months after a person was buried. Mushi-ana lost his battle against colon cancer on 27 July last year and he was buried on 2 August at Tshimbupfe.

Mushiana’s sister, Mashudu, says the formal cere-mony will be preceded with a night vigil prayer (mulindelo) on Friday evening. “Elijar loved the church and, as a fam-ily, we feel it befitting for the church to lead this important occasion. Although it is now a year after his death, the pain of losing him never stops troubling us on a daily basis. He was everything to the whole family and we will al-ways remember him.”

Mashudu says peo-ple who will not join the night vigil will be expected to arrive at Mushiana's house at 07:00 on Saturday morning. “We will then depart for the graveyard at Tshimbupfe where senior members of the Old Mission Zion Ap-

ostolic Church will conduct rites and prayers. After a short programme at the graveyard, we will then go back to Vuwani where the formal programme will take place. Speakers will include congregants, family members, friends and people who worked with Elijar while he was still alive. We invite everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Elijar to come and join us for this important occasion.”

Elijar, who was born on 28 May 1973, worked for different media houses, including Limpo-po Mirror, City Press, Capricorn

Voice, Sunday Sun, Sunday World, Sunday Times, Drum Magazine, Pace Magazine, and Next Magazine. At the time of his death, he was photographic head of the Limpopo Sowetan bureau in Polokwane.

He was a founder member of the Vhembe Media Forum of which he served as chairperson for two years in succession. As a prolific and versatile me-dia practitioner, Mushiana won more than 20 awards during his lifetime, in addition to being crowned the 2012 Sowetan Pho-tographer of the Year.

Gone but not forgotten: Elijar Mushiana.

Three people died while trapped in the wreckage resulting from a head-on collision on Sunday.

Three people died while trapped in the wreckage re-sulting from a head-on collision on the road from Rathidili to the Makhado Air Force base on Sunday.

It took rescue workers several hours to remove the trapped victims from the wreckage. The mood was sombre for the hun-dreds of curious onlookers and family members who kept vigil at the scene of the accident.

Rescue workers had to use the “jaws of life” to cut away the wreckage to get to the trapped victims.

Some onlookers wept openly and family members had to be helped by emergency personnel as they were on the verge of breaking down. It was one of the most ghastly accidents ever in the Sinthumule area.

The deceased are W/O Majila from Makhado AFB, Sibusiso Baweti (21) and Ms Kedibone Majika (33), a driver of one of the vehicles.

The injured who are still at hospital are Benedict Nobula from Makhado AFB, the other driver and members of the Majika family, Johana, Mathipa, Lehlo-

nono and Mohapi.Tshilwavhusiku police spokes-

person Const Thilivhali Malowa said that they had opened a culpable homicide docket. She described the accident as one of the most serious to have hap-pened in the area.

Ms Cynthia van Rensburg from the Road Accident Fund said that they were going to consult with the families of the deceased to institute claims for the loss of support for the surviv-ing dependants. “We also wish the victims a speedy recovery,” she said.

Members of the Vuwani Demarcation Task Team at the Mathebula home after the fire.

The police in Vuwani are in-vestigating the burning of a house belonging to one of the local Sanco leaders, Mr Calvin Mathebula.

Mathebula (42), of Vuwani Township, is an executive mem-ber of the local civic and member of the Vuwani Demarcation Task Team and has been very vocal about the newly proposed municipality. It will incorporate Malamulele and some areas of Vuwani.

Mathebula was not home at the time of the fire. He is the first victim of those purported to be sell-outs, in the move to include the people of Vuwani in the proposed new municipality in Vhembe.

Thousands of residents from around Vuwani came in their numbers on Monday to denounce the incorporation of parts of Vuwani into the proposed new municipality.

During the march, Mathebula's name was prominent on the list of those alleged to be "selling out". They are alleged to have received bribes to advance the cause for a new proposed municipality.

After the march, youths are said to have gone to his house and pelted it with stones, but they were dispersed by the police. Mathebula said he had known about the impending attack and moved his family to safety. “Around midnight, a group of youths came and attacked my house, I was hiding at a safe distance but managed to see them and could identify them.

"This is a sad situation where people with differing ideologies have to go this far to counter one's beliefs. I bear no grudges toward anyone and will not take revenge. These are some of the things that one comes across as a community leader,” he said.

He said the damage was es-

timated at nearly half a million rand as nothing was saved from the house.

Vuwani Demarcation Task Team chairperson Mr Thanyani Mudau said that they would not be intimadated. “We know of course that we are not safe, but our idelogies will stand the test of time and we will not back off. We know it is the beginning but, come rain or thunder, we will not forsake the mandate of our people. This is a free society where there is freedom of speech and we expect to be treated as such,” he said.

Vuwani police spokesperson W/O Elijah Malatjie said the fire was reported at around 02:00. "We have not managed to arrest anybody in connection with the burning and a public-violence charge was opened. Investiga-tions are continuing and we hope for a breakthrough soon," said Malatjie.

House of community leader set alight

(See photographs on p1)Residents from the villages around the Vuwani area say they will not rest until their demand not to be incorpo-rated in the proposed new municipality in Vhembe is heard. They also threatened a total shutdown in Vuwani if their demands are not met.

This transpired during a march where thousands from the Vuwani area handed over a memorandum detailing their grievances to Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba, who re-ceived the memorandum on behalf of Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha, who is said to be visiting China.

Singing anti-Malamulele and struggle songs, the huge crowd waited for hours as they stated in no uncertain terms that they would not allow any local leader except from the province to accept their memorandum. The police battled to control the huge crowd until Ramathuba arrived in a police hippo.

The protest stems from an announcement by the munici-pal demarcation board earlier

this month that a proposed municipality for Vhembe would replace that of Mutale. The new municipality will include Malamulele, whose residents made it clear that they want their own municipality separate from Thulamela and parts of the Vuwani area, Mulenzhe and the Tshikonelo area.

The announcement was well-received by the people of Malamulele, while sections of the community in Vuwani have a different view.

Five traditional leaders have already indicated their un-willingness to be part of the proposed setup.

Handing over the memoran-dum, Pro-Makhado Demarca-tion Task Team chairperson Avhapfani Mudau said the new setup was a political ploy by the powers that be who wanted to win the hearts of the Malam-ulele people at their expense. “We have taken a conscious decision and we will not be part of Malamulele; we are right where we are in Makhado. What is surprising is that we were never consulted when this

thing started, but we are now being used to justify an unjust cause for people to gain their municipality,” he said.

He said the government should practice what it preaches and not dictate to the residents. Traditional leader Thovhele Nthumeni Masia said they stood by the earlier decision by the same municipal demarcation board that said Malamulele would not be economically viable. “We are not saying we are getting the best service at Makhado, but we cannot be part of something that is unknown to us; we are right here where we are,” he said. Receiving the memorandum, Ramathuba said the residents should not confuse the proposal with a final deci-sion by the board.

“Communities still have a window open for them to sub-mit objections or confirm the proposal. Please make use of this opportunity to voice your objections,” she said.

Government was given 20 days to respond to the memo-randum or expect a total shut-down in Vuwani.

Thovhele Vho-Vele Kutama, the new chief of Kutama.

Thovhele Vho-Vele Kutama, King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and Thovhele Vho-Midiyavhathu Tshivhase dance tshikona during the ceremony.

New Chief reigns in KutamaChief Vele Prince Kutama was inaugurated as the new leader of the Kutama tribe during a ceremony at the Tshiungulela School´s sports grounds last Saturday.

Members of the communities from the sur-rounding villages of Kutama area flocked in numbers to attend the event. The ceremony was attended by, among others, King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, Thovhele Vho-Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, Thovhele Vho-Gole Mphaphuli, the MEC for Coghsta, Makoma Makhurupetja, and many chiefs around Vhembe.

After the death of Thovhele Peter Kutama in 2011, the royal family appointed his younger brother, Vele Prince Kutama, as the new Chief. The decision was put to the test by members of the family, who believe that customary practices

were not followed when the decision was made. The family group, led by Aifheli Andries Kuta-ma, filed papers in the High Court to oppose the decision of installing Vele as the leader instead of the late son, Mpho Andropov Kutama.

Earlier this year, the two groups sat down and agreed that Vele be installed as the chief. During the event on Saturday, King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana said that community members must respect the new chief.

He added that the chief must focus on de-veloping the area. “We are appealing to the community to continue working closely with the newly installed Chief to develop the Kutama area,” he said.

He further said that the community of Kutama must also support the newly inaugurated Chief for the development of the area.

“I want to see development in this area.

I always encourage good relations between traditional leaders and the municipality,” Mphe-phu said. MEC Makona Makurupetja said the Limpopo Government was eager to work hand in hand with traditional leaders and every chief. “Traditional leaders are the backbone of de-mocracy and they must be respected,” she said.

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, Tho-vhele Vho-Vele Kutama indicated that he was looking forward to working together with the community members of Kutama.

He added that the community had to expect good things that he was planning to bring for the community in the village. “I am also going to encourage traditional dances, to restore the traditional values of the Vha-Venda people,” he outlined, adding that he was also ready to work with the police in terms of reduction of crime in the village.

Is Nyundu back with Leopards again?Ruggert Nyundu (27), the prolific striker of Black Leopards, has apparently returned and is training with the team again.

A fortnight ago, the star was nowhere to be found after two teams, Black Leopards and Polokwane City, both claimed that they had registered him as a player. Last month, Black Leopards stated that the player had signed a three-year contract with them. Nyundu was on loan to Black Leopards during the past season and he scored 18 goals in 17 games for Lidoda Duvha. Polokwane City, on the other hand, claimed that Nyundu still has one year remaining with their team.

Nyundu is reportedly on the wanted list of sev-eral Absa Premiership teams after his impressive performances for Black Leopards in the National First Division this past season.

The chief operations officer of Polokwane City, Mr Tincy Tema, told Limpopo Mirror two weeks ago that Nyundu would rejoin his team mates the following week, which did not happen. He then said that Nyundu was busy arranging the funeral of his late sister.

The married man and father of two was quoted in the media as saying that he would not go back to City, because he earned only R5 000 per month there, whereas at Leopards he received R10 000. Black Leopards’ boss said that Nyundu still had a one-year contract with City, but that he was still negotiating terms with City.

Nyundu mentioned that he wanted to play for Wits. He is apparently on the shopping list of Su-perSport, AmaZulu, Highlands Park, Bloemfontein Celtic, Royal Eagles and Wits. Nyundu is not too keen to play for Leopards in the First Division, despite the club’s interest in him. “I have explained to the chairman at Leopards, David Thidiela, that I want to go to the PSL and I think he understands. There is no money in the NFD. I am looking for better money and a signing-on fee. If I go back to the NFD, then nothing will change,” he said.

Nyundu is confident he will not get taken for a ride again, should he find another club in the PSL. “At City they just gave me a contract without telling me how much I was going to earn. They did not ask us how much I wanted. They did not even negotiate. I am wiser now and it will not happen again.”

He believes he can win the top-scorer award in the PSL. “Once I get a chance, I am going to be the leading goal scorer. I have a good technique. The strikers in the PSL are not doing enough.”Ruggert Nyundu. Police arrive at ground level of the mountain where Budeli-Vele was found hanging.

Prince Budeli-Vele.

Community members of Khubvi and Makonde villages celebrated with joy on Tuesday after-noon, following the gruesome discovery of the decomposed body of Prince Budeli-Vele (45).

He was the suspect in the case where two chil-dren, aged 5 and 3, were mercilessly bludgeoned to death with a knobkierie at Makonde about a fortnight ago. Budeli-Vele is said to be the father of the youngest victim, Justice Thangwana. The incident took placde after a quarrel between the children’s mother and Budeli-Vele.

Budeli-Vele’s body was found hanging from a tree on a mountain near Khubvi. Local police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed that Budeli-Vele’s decomposed body was dis-covered by women who were fetching firewood at about 15:45 on Tuesday afternoon. “We can confirm that Budeli-Vele’s body was discovered on the mountain of Khubvi,” said Malelo.

He also revealed that Prince Thagwana, Bude-li-Vele’s close friend and brother in-law positively identified the hanging body as that of Budeli-Vele.

Since the alleged killing of the children, the police have been on a manhunt for Budeli-Vele. Malelo also confirmed that their search went as far as Gauteng, where they reached Budeli-Vele’s shack. “When our officers reached his shack, he was not there. We also responded to countless calls from community members who informed us that they were seeing him around Makonde and Khubvi,” said Malelo.

Malelo added that they had opened an inquest docket and that a post mortem would be conducted to identify the cause of Budeli-Vele’s death. “The discovery of the body does not mean that we have

closed the murder docket of the killing of the two children.”

The spokesperson of the family, Mr Ephraim Thagwana, said that they were happy that the body was found. Thangwana, brother of the murdered children’s mother, said that they always wanted Budeli-Vele to be arrested and face the full might of the law. “Now that his corpse has been found, we hope our sister will no longer live in fear as he promised that he would come back and finish her off.”

Meanwhile, the community of Makonde has already raised R16 000 for the benefit of the only surviving child, Given Thagwane (9). According to members of the community they will continue to raise funds for the family.

Five houses destroyed as Lwamondo youth go on the rampageUgly scenes played out at Lwa-mondo outside Thohoyandou during the past week, when angry youths went on the rampage by blockading roads with burning tyres and any big objects they could lay their hands on. They also burnt five houses suspected to belong to crime busters in the area.

The arsonists accused these people of being behind the al-leged ritual murder of Dakalo Bulannga (23) of Lwamondo Khumbe. Bulannga went miss-ing on 2 July this year after being accused of robbery by the crime busters in the village. He was later brought back home to retrieve a phone he was sus-pected of stealing and they then left with him, but he was never seen again.

He was found on 14 July, almost two weeks after his dis-

appearance, hanging at the back of a house belonging to a local traditional leader. His death sparked violent protest, which left a trail of destruction in its wake. Five houses were burnt down in the process.

Starting from Saturday last week, the first day of the violent protest, Lwamondo has been a no-go area, with traffic on the R554 from Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou having to make long detours via the Nzhelele and the Vuwani area as sporadic stoning of passing cars took place and roads were blocked.

T s h i m a n g a d z o T s h i k -hovhokhovho, whose parents’ 12-roomed house burnt to the ground, said she blamed the police for the burning of her parents’ home. “I heard about the threats the previous day. I visited my parents the following

day to find out about the situa-tion and found that nothing was happening. My parents left to do some shopping in Thohoyandou, but immediately after their de-parture I heard that people were burning houses not far from our house. I phoned my parents, who reported the matter to the police, but nothing was done to protect our house. The mob, who were using a loud hailer to direct the protestors, came to our house and burnt it to ashes, with nothing saved from it,” she said.

She said she saw everything when a man from the mob poured petrol into the sitting room of their house and lit a match. Meanwhile, the father of the dead man, Mr Thivhulawi Bulannga, said the family had more questions than answers about the disappearance and subsequent killing of his son.

“The crime busters owe me an-swers as to what had happened to my son. They came here and took him away, came back with him to collect a phone and that was the last time he was seen alive.”

He asked why they had not taken him to the police station if he had done something wrong. “We are not against them as crime busters, but they have to explain my son’s killing,” he said. The dead man’s aunt, Ms Christina Ma-sithi, said she saw the body, which had some

parts missing. “We are very concerned that the boy might have been ritually murdered as some of his parts were missing. These people must account for everything as they are the ones who took him away from home,” she said.

The local senior local tradi-tional leader, Thovhele Calvin Nelwamondo, called for calm and urged the community to give the police a chance to work on

the case.The Vuwani police’s spokes-

person, Constable Ntsundeni Mungadi, confirmed the inci-dent and said they had opened a public-violence docket. “We are investigating and we believe that, with the assistance of our community, we will make ar-rests soon,” she said.

At the time of our going to press, the situation had returned to normal in the area.

Fire everywhere; even streets were barricaded with burning tyres.

The late Dakalo Bulan-nga, who was found hanging at the local traditional leader’s house.

The house belonging to Chief Tshikhovhokhovho was gutted during the unrest. Nothing was saved from the house.

Traditional surgeon challenges government to stop initiation deathsWith deaths reported at several cir-cumcision schools in some parts of the country, one young traditional surgeon has come out and chal-lenged the government to involve them in efforts to curb these deaths.

At the young age of 33, Itani Nemavhulani of Tshimbupfe outside

Vuwani in Limpopo is one of the youngest and most successful tradi-tional surgeons in the country. Since 2001, Nemavhulani has conducted 18 successful initiation schools with no fatalities.

had yet another successful season at Mabidi village, where all the more than 130 initiates successfully com-pleted the initiation period.

The school was an initiative of the newly installed visionary chief and Univen education student Nelson Mabidi Mahandana, who said during his installation that he would revive the culture and prioritize education in his area.

During the pass-out parade at the weekend, Nemavhulani said he was worried about the number of fatalities at initiation schools in some parts of the country, especially the Eastern Cape, where as many as 22 initiates perished this year.

“We have a challenge here. People just wake up and proclaim to be cir-

cumcision surgeons while having no skills at all. This is a calling from the ancestors and not all qualify.”

He added that government should step in and not wait for another death at initiation schools. “One more death is far too many. We can avoid the unnecessary deaths if we work together,” he added.

The local traditional leader, Chief Mabidi Mahandana, said he was proud of Nemavhulani.

“We handpicked him because of his track record. Even our forefathers used this family and no one has died at their initiation schools. We are wor-ried that initiates are dying in other parts of the country, but we are proud this man is assisting us in reviving our culture at no life cost,” he said.

“Youth must take care of elders” - 1st ladyThe grannies and young benefi-ciaries at the Elim Hlanganani Society for the Care of the Aged were honoured with a visit by the office of the First Lady of the Limpopo province, Mrs Maggie Mathabatha, last Tuesday.

T h e s o c i e t y w e l c o m e d Mathabatha and a delegation from the Red Cross with song and dance. The team said that they had decided to come and spend the day with the elderly. “I am in particular honoured and grateful to spend a day with the aged, the disabled people and the youths who are involved in poverty-alle-viation projects here today,” she said. “The aim of our visit is to come here and enjoy the gift of life with you as we demonstrate the qualities of ubuntu.”

S h e t h e n s p o k e against the abuse of the elderly and urged all youngsters to stop making life hell for the elderly by snatching their old-age social grant. “Our mothers and grandmothers, keep your social grant monies safer,” she said. “Use that money to buy your-self fruits, fried chicken, ice cream and other de-licious treats which you might not have enjoyed when you were raising us and taking us through school.”

Mathabatha told the

people about the Limpopo First Lady Trust, which helps needy children and indigent people. She said, even though the trust had limited funds, the door for help was always open.

The representative of the Red Cross, Mr George Mamabolo, said that the organisation dealt with poverty and disasters and crises by bringing relief to the affected people or communities. “The vision of the Elim Hlanga-nani Society for the Care of the Aged is in line with our vision of taking help where it is needed most,” he said. The team brought the grannies blankets, feet wrap-pers and socks.

Elim Hlanganani Society for the Care of the Aged’s director, Ms Florence Khosa, expressed the society’s happiness and gratitude towards the visitors. She even referred to Mathabatha as “our makoti” (bride) as a way of showing appreciation for her visit.

“We ask you to visit us again and again,” she said.

Another elderly lady, Ms Georginah Machume (81), said that she lacked words to ex-press her joy. “Your gesture of kindness has given us renewed strength to do good in our old age.”

Ms Anna Maboko (75) receives her blanket from the First Lady of Limpopo, Mrs Maggie Mathabatha.

The Thohoyandou High Court sentenced a 46-year-old father to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping his biological daughter.

The man, who could not be named to protect the identity of the seven-year-old minor whom he had raped, appeared in court last Monday.

It was heard in court that he had lured her to his room under the pretense of assisting her with homework when he raped her on 24 October 2011. According to the police’s report, the father was arrested shortly after the incident and never received bail.

The provincial commissioner of the police, Lt Gen Fanie Masemola, congratulated the investi-gating team with this success and reiterated that

the police would never rest until the abusers of women and children were behind bars. He added that he hoped the maximum sentence would send a strong message to the would-be perpetrators of crimes against women and children.

It was all smiles as 415 employees of the Community Works Programme (CWP) received their new uniforms from the mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, at the Matswale municipal offices. Each beneficiary received a work suit, safety footwear, sun hat and a T-shirt. Ramoyada stated that providing uniforms to the workers would not only help them to perform their duties safely, it would also help everyone to recognize them. She said that government was doing its best to eradicate poverty and unemployment. She further pleaded with the workers to respect each other at all times and do their work according to their job descriptions. Muhuyu worshippers’ narrow shave with death

Bus owner Mr Humbulani Mudau (right) and his driver, Fulufhelo Nthangeni, inspect the damage at the scene of the fire.

Worshippers on their way to church had a nar-row shave with death when the bus they were travelling in caught fire and was completely gutted.

The Dyna 27-seater bus caught fire while trans-porting worshippers from Muhuyu to church in Thohoyandou. It is suspected that the bus experi-enced an electrical problem.

The incident took place on Sunday, a fortnight ago, next to Nthetsheleseni Secondary School at Tshivhulani outside Sibasa. One lane of the road was closed for some time, while firefighters tried to save the bus from complete destruction. The bus belongs to Mr Humbulani Mudau of Mudau Transport Services.

The driver of the bus, Mr Fulufhelo Nthangeni, said he was nearing his destination when the bus developed some problems. “Passengers saw sparks

coming from the engine, and before we could figure out what was happening, the fire had spread and we could not control it. I used all four the fire ex-tinguishers that I had on the bus but could not stop the fire from spreading. We summoned the local fire brigade, but unfortunately the fire had spread to the whole bus.”

Passengers jumped out of the bus and fortunately no one was injured in the incident, but the bus was destroyed. Mudau, the owner of the bus, who arrived at the scene, did not show any emotion and comforted his driver. He said the damage caused was around R300 000. “This is quite a hefty loss to the company, but we are happy that no one was injured or died in the incident. The bus can be replaced any time, but lives cannot be bought and we have God to thank for the mercy He gave our passengers,” he said.

Tree nuts record high prices on global markets

Shayandima’s “Mother of the Nation” buried

The demand for tree nuts, and macadamias in particular, is showing no signs of slowing down.

According to the Valley Macadamias Group, delegates at this year’s International Dried Fruit and Nut Congress (INC) held in Turkey from 22 to 24 May were of the opinion that tree nut prices had reached an unprecedented level. But the demand from health-conscious consumers means that the ceiling on prices has not yet been reached.

Goretti Guasch, executive director of the INC, said that nuts and dried fruit were considered to be the healthiest snack and made a major contribution to the treatment and prevention of disorders such as obesity, diabetes and cancer. “We have seen a 25% increase in the value of tree nuts between 2013 and 2014. The value of this industry stands at US$33,7 billion. Dried fruit showed a 5% increase and stands at US$7,4 billion globally,” said Guasch.

The congress attracted close to 1 000 delegates from around the world. Reports from the various sectors indicated that kernel prices for macadamia nuts are averaging US$18/kg while hazelnuts fetch just over US$14/kg and pistachios US$11/kg. Al-monds and walnuts will cost you just over US$10/kg, brazil nuts and cashews just over US$8/kg.

The macadamia market is experiencing much tension as buyers are all vying for the lion’s share of available stock as competition tightens between the Asian nut in shell (NIS) market and the Western kernel market. The world’s two biggest macadamia producers, South Africa and Australia, are expected to export 40% - 50% of their crop as NIS to Asia this year.

Speaking at the conference, Alan Sutton, chair-man of the Valley Macadamias Group in South Africa, said that although certain European mar-kets had slowed down because of the recession, chocolate manufacturers had been immune to the high prices as they simply could not start excluding nuts from their products. “The Japanese market is somewhat deterred by the higher prices, but they

have indicated that research on the health benefits of macadamias would go a long way to diffuse the resistance,” said Sutton.

South Africa currently produces nearly 47 000 tons of macadamia nuts. This is an increase from 45 000 tons the previous year. The closest competitor is Australia with a crop of 44 000 tons and Kenya with 22 000 tons.

Sutton predicts that the South African macada-mia crop will double during the next five years. “By 2017, it should stand at 74 000 tons, considering that around 1000 additional hectares are planted each year. With strengthening demand for both kernel and NIS, there is great scope for growth in this industry,” said Sutton.

Hundreds of mourners from all over the region gathered at the Levubu Christelike Ge-meente a fortnight ago, to bid farewell to a respected resident ot the area, Ms Regina Swart. She was buried at the Levubu cemetery.

Swart (46) of Shayandima, who worked at NTK-Venda at Muledane, will be remembered for her golden heart and gener-osity, having helped many needy families and people.

During the event, it was report-ed that she committed her entire life to serving and caring for the poor and disadvantaged. At one time she had 13 black children in her house in Shayandima, whom she fed and took care of their schooling.

Her generosity and golden heart endeared her to the local community, of which she and her husband had become part. In the region she was known as the Mother of the Nation. During the 21st birthday party of two of their adopted children, Takkies and Serious, the family shocked all when they bought a car for Tak-kies and a top-of-the-range laptop for Serious as their birthday gifts.

Among the speakers were ANC stalwart Dr Tshenuwani Farisani. He said that he came to know the family when he went to their shop to buy farming tools. “I was attracted by the way they treated people and clients and immediately our friendship blossomed. I am just sad that she passed on before coming to my

small farm as we had arranged,” he said.

Pastor Craig Whitcomb, who conducted the sermon, told the family not to despair like people who do not know God.

One of the deceased’s children, Takkies, said the death of their mother had left a void in their hearts. “She treated us like her own blood children and we will always miss her warmth and caring,” he said.

The deceased’s husband, Ger-hard Swart, said he was consoled by the fact that there was no pain for her anymore as she was with the Lord. “No one can replace her presence and we will always remember her for her smile and warmth and love for all people. We will miss her a lot,” he said.

Musina Municipality acquires new graderIn a positive move to accelerate service de-livery, Musina Municipality recently bought a grader at a cost of R3,4 million. This is a historic achievement when one takes into con-sideration that this municipality operated for many years without its own grader.

The senior manager responsible for technical services in the municipality, Ms Chuene Dinyake, said jubilantly that it was one of the biggest

achievements the municipality had attained. “I personally feel happy because the grader will help in the construction and maintenance of roads in this municipality.

For all these years, we used to hire graders from service providers and it was costing us a lot of money. Now that we have our own machinery, it will be easier to construct and maintain our roads.”

Photographed with the new grader are, from left to right, Mr Dan Nkombesekwa (superintendent, maintenance), Mesdames Chuene Dinyake (senior manager, technical services) and Mary Siziba (manager, supply chain and assets) and Mr Mike Mthombeni (Manager, Civil).

Mr Mike Mthombeni, who heads the civil unit at Musina Municipali-ty, said the acquisition of the grader would not only benefit the people of Musina. “It will also benefit tourists, business people and travelers who use our roads on a daily basis. It has an impact on everyone, whether you drive, walk or cycle. This will help the municipality to provide safer roads and better routes for the easy flow of traffic.”

Mthombeni said the road maintenance team was doing its best to make sure that the municipal roads were safe. “The continuous maintenance of our roads will help make our pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and passengers safe at all times.” He said the fact that the number of vehicle owners kept on increasing day by day made the municipality more aggressive when dealing with issues of road maintenance.

Rotenda has already made a name for herself in the radio industry. This young mother of a fi ve-year-old son is the presenter of the midday show (Tshiko) from 12:00 to 14:00.

She started her career as a presenter in 2006 at Univen community radio before joining Phalaphala FM in 2010. “I could not resist the opportunity to join the SABC because I wanted to expose my talent to a bigger audience,” she explains.

Her programme focuses on what she terms “Shaping people’s day-to-day debates”, and through her daring yet considerate questioning style, she tackling everything from politics to economics, labour, education, development and social lifestyle.

Rotenda studied for a BA Honnours degree in Develop-ment Studies at the Univer-sity of Venda. “Development studies comes in handy in my day-to-day radio experience, since South Africa is a developmental state.

This ultimately empowers lis teners,” explains Rotenda.

The vibrant radio presenter has many more plans for the road ahead. “I’m still young and there is still more to offer my community. I also need more skills to improve myself in my work environment. I want to tell the youth that it is important to put education fi rst, so that they can make a signifi cant contribution in the community in which they live. Young people must stay away from drugs and criminal activ-ities and prepare themselves for careers that will benefi t them in life.”

The future looks bright for this young lady, and according to her “My limit is somewhere on the other side of the sky.”

Rotenda ascribes her success to perseverance, hard work, motivation and effective time management.

After a year of mourning the great brain behind the multi-million-rand Matsila Development Trust, the Matsila Royal family performed a cleansing ceremony at Mashamba Village a fortnight ago.

According to Chief Nkhiphitheni Matsila, the cleansing marked the end of their mourning for the

late Florah Mashamba, whose con-tribution at the Matsila Development Trust created a lot of jobs. She passed on last year on 10 July. “Due to her wisdom, the trust employed more than 300 people in the fields of agriculture, poultry, vegetable farming, arts and culture and environmental manage-ment. Now we can arrange any gig or celebration because all chains are broken on Saturday. It gives us much more strength to go on with develop-ment in her honour.”

He added that she was a “very spe-cial library of wisdom. She taught me a lot on how to be a cognitive leader. She was a unifier of the community at large and the royal family. She ad-vised me to be honest and transparent towards the people as their leader.”

The senior traditional leader, Tho-vhele Nthumeni Masia, expressed his appreciation to the royal family and the entire community of Matsila for hounoring their pioneer in devel-opment.

A member of the school governing body of Madaheni Combined School, Mr David Ramovha from Makhitha Village, recently found a puffadder in his store room. He was worried that the snake would die in the shed. During the month of December, he usually keeps pigs in a pen adjacent to the store room and when he feeds the pigs, the rats share the food source. This is what attracted the snake, but with no pigs during the rest of the year, there will be no rats for the snake to eat. Ramovha contacted Ms Judy van Schalkwyk from WESSA Eco-Schools to come and rescue the snake. Fortunately, Mr Oldrich van Schalkwyk from the Lajuma Research Centre could help out and the female snake was released in the Soutpansberg. For more information on Eco-Schools, any individual or organisation is welcome to contact Ms Van Schalkwyk at [email protected].

SAPS cluster builds house for abused kidsThe Makhado cluster of the South Africa Police Services has taken it upon themselves to build a proper house for fi ve children whose alcoholic mother had allegedly neglected them, leaving them to fend for themselves.

According to the cluster commander, Brig Alex Seopa, they heard about the plight of the family and decided to try and make a difference. “The mother is sharing a makeshift structure with her six children, aged between 21 and 5,” he said. The cluster decided to build a house with six rooms to provide shelter for the family.

“We are trying to raise funds and have asked for donations in the form of building materials from businesspeople,” he said.

Seopa said that, according to the police’s assess-ment of the matter, the mother had not neglected the children. “Poverty is a cruel thing – it turns its face towards people and then confusion reigns,” he said. “The fact of the matter is that she could not bring her partner into that shack to spend a night. She chose to give her children enough space to be children.” He said that the police had found her at home on regular visits at her home in N’waxinya-mani village, near Elim.

The 18-year-old son, however, had fewer illu-sions about their moth-er’s commitment to the family. “Our mother would hardly spend more than two days at home. She would van-ish for weeks while I looked after my brothers and sisters. I even quit school because I had to take total care of my baby brother, who is only fi ve now,” he said.

According to the son, it all started in 2012 when the mother started drinking alcohol com-pulsively. “She had used our social grant monies as she wished,” he said.

The children finally reported her to social workers and the moth-er’s grant card was con-fiscated. The children

are now accompanied by an offi cial from the social welfare department every month. “Our social work-er makes a withdrawal on our account and gives us all our money,” the son explained. “We use it all to get food in her presence. We fi nd this arrangement to be better, because it’s helping us,” he said.

The Makhado cluster community policing fo-rum chairperson, Samson Mphilo, said that many stakeholders had already contributed towards the house project. The donors include BuildIt Elim, CTM Makhado, Ndovela Brickyard, Elim Engen, and Shiviti Brickyard.

“The house, however, is only half built and the project had to be temporarily stopped due to the shortage of material such as bricks, cement and sand,” Mphilo said.

Meanwhile, Brig Seopa said that once the house had been completed, the absent mother would be approached to return home and to live with her children. “We will involve social workers, so that the mother and the children fi nd peace of mind and live in dignity,” he said.

Anyone interested in donating building material can contact Mphilo at 074 357 0667.

A 31-year-old kwaito and house singer, Given Mashamba, known as Deezazo in music circles, has released his debut album, titled Friday Saturday.

He says the title refers to the leisure time which people have on those days after working very hard from Monday to Friday evening.

“I started singing in Roodepoort, where I was a fashion designer,” he said. “I would sing while I was busy sewing and designing traditional garments. I found music to exist in everything that we do as people. It exists in the food we eat; in the water we drink and in the footsteps which we take. Go to the waterfalls and come back to tell me if you did not hear the music of the water.”

Deezazo has found a space in the league of the young and talented local singers among his contempo-raries such as King Mlatiro, Bocca, and many other unrecorded artists. However, he remains an exception in that he is neither lazy nor slow in formalising his talent. Any listener

will conclude that he is singing for the enjoyment of music. “I am a very good dancer who is not shy to show-case my talent as I do my moves on stage,” he said.

This album comprises 10 tracks. The fi rst track, Ma 11, is a bit luke-warm but that is quickly redeemed by the vibey Rembuluwa – which will have many listeners getting onto their feet to dance. There are more good songs like Buyela Gae, Bula re nwe, and Friday Saturday.

Even though there is nothing negative about Deezazo’s songs or music, listeners should never expect any motivational messages or inspi-ration from his lyrics. His remains the kind of music which people lis-ten to just to enjoy the instruments, vocal rhythm or the artist’s talent of belting out words in his own fashion which can also amaze the listener.

He has worked with Ishmael new-Breed Rammbwa and Tshenzhemo “TZM” Sikhwari on his album.

He resides in Ramahantsha village in the Sinthumule area.

Deezazo can be reached at 076 502 0720.

Gospel choir needs help to reach youth through song

A 25-year-old resident of Shigalo vil-lage near Malamulele and student at the University of Venda, Love Baloyi, has just launched his fi rst book, Life Series of Decisions and Self-encour-agement.

Even though he purports his publica-tion to be a collection of “short stories”, the contents do not quite live to up to his claim. However, readers must not feel dispirited by what has just been said here.

Life Series of Decisions and Self-en-couragement is a book worth reading, as it carries motivational words augmented by what reads like anecdotes from the author’s personal experience about life.

“I wrote this book to impact in the lives of people of different age groups in terms of fi guring out the importance of decision making and also the issue of self-encouragement when they are in the midst of challenges,” he says.

He says there is nothing wrong when a person faces challenges because each individual has got to face challenges.

“But what matters most is how you react to what you are going through,” he adds. “I noticed that numerous people fail to make good decisions because of the lack of knowledge, and they fail to account to their choices. This book will be a base for them to know that the decisions we make today will determine what tomorrow holds for us.”

He had chosen the title Life Series of Decisions and Self-encouragement just because the decisions that people make are inter-related. “They depend on each other, for example: when I decide not to go to school, I’m indirectly deciding to suffer,” he says. “Self-encouragement is also included in decision making be-cause when you encourage yourself you will decide to do something and with a positive attitude.”

Many books have been written on motivation before, and Baloyi feels that he is not repeating what other authors have covered before him.

“I am not repeating what has been told many times before me because the approach of motivational writing is different, depending on the writer’s experience, obser-vance as well as creativity,” he reasoned.

“Another thing is that even if some topics al-ready have been writ-ten by other writers, the way another writer can elucidate may differ. We may talk about the same thing but different description and what causes an impact is how I express my idea as a writer. The logic and the sense of what you write is what matters

most.” Baloyi is a currently doing a de-gree in biochemistry and microbiology. “I succeed in both study life and writing time because I am a hard worker,” he says. “I make sure that whenever I’m not busy with my school work I think of what I can write about. One more important thing is that writing is a gift but what I am doing at school is just something that I decided to do. It means I cannot run away from writing becaus ite is part

of me. Even when I have a lot of school work I can still write because there is a burning de-

sire for writing in me.”

R4 million traffic light project opens in ThohoyandouThe recent switching on of street lights in Thohoyandou has been hailed as one of the best things to have happened in the town. On Wednesday evening, Thulamela municipality, led by Mayor Grace Mahosi, formally switched on street lights stretching from JJ Motors to the Khoroni Hotel traffic lights.

Residents of Thohoyandou, mostly those living next to the main street who

witnessed the switch ing on, hailed the project, saying that the lights would help expose criminals who had taken over the streets and made them their hunting grounds. The project, worth more than R4 million, was started in March this year and completed at the end of June.

Mahosi said that besides beautifying the town and attracting investors, the new lights would help the police to reduce

crime in the area.“We are a developing municipality with a vision of becoming a city in 2030, and this vision will not be realized if we do not attract investors who will create jobs for our people. We cannot attract them if we still have crime, and people will not be able to pay for services if they are not working,” said Mahosi.

She further indicated that they were serious about developing their towns and

job creation.“As we speak now, we

have added three traffic lights at Malamulele and a huge mall is under construction at the old show grounds, where 1 500 permanent jobs will be created, along with 3 000 temporary ones.” She added that the municipality would also erect lights at iden-tified crime hotspots in Mukula, Matatshe and Makonde and that all defective and non-func-tional lights would be upgraded and repaired in the current financial year.

Mayor Grace Mahosi (in centre, with scarf) cuts the ribbon marking the official switching on of the lights. With her are other officials and happy Thohoyandou residents.

Musina Annual Show

Top entertainment for town’s fun loversThe Musina Annual Show, which started yesterday (Thursday) and ends tomorrow (Saturday), promises to be a thriller not to be missed.

The local municipality is opti-mistic that this show will be on everybody’s lips long after the exhibitors have disassembled their stalls. Musina Annual Show targets audiences across the cul-tural spectrum through classic advertising, publicity and trade exchanges, delivering a very high volume worth of exposure.

The fact that a large percentage of consumers tend towards cash buying means exhibitors enjoy improved cash fl ow as a direct result, with follow-up business after the show - adding a valuable rounding off of this powerful marketing exercise.

The spokesperson for the mu-nicipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, says the show gives an oppor-tunity to exhibitors, ranging from companies to government institutions, to market their prod-ucts directly to the public. “This is an ideal platform for small businesses to network with gov-ernment institutions, companies and other organizations which may consider appointing them as service providers.

There will be irresistible at-tractions which include exhi-bitions, ranging from vehicle displays to food, a traditional village and manufacturers of different products, to name but a few. Fun lovers will enjoy entertainment in the form of merry-go-round, jumping castles, traditional dances, musangwe

(traditional boxing), wrestling, theatre, drum majorettes and music festivals.”

Dzebu says apart from exhib-iting products and entertainment, the show puts the municipality on the national map because everyone knows that there is something happening in Musina. “It also boosts our economic de-velopment because there will be lots of trading taking place here.”

Musicians who will entertain fun lovers during the show in-clude Busiswa, Thebe, Dj Heavy K, KO & Ma’E, Mizo, Percy Mukwevho, Bellafonte, Dream Team, DJ Fisherman, DJ C’ndo, NaakMusiq, Black Motion, Dj Shimza, Ricus Nel, Liza Bron-ner, Jay, Complexion & Bambo, Worship House, Taki & Rofhiwa, Zozo and artists from Musina.

A dangerous suspect who es-caped from the Malamulele Magistrate's Court last month was apprehended in a secluded area between Letsitele and Nkowankowa last Monday evening.

According to a statement sup-plied by the police, Madala Dan-iel Mhlango is an trial-awaiting prisoner for a series of crimes he committed in the Ritavi and the

Letsitele area. The alleged crimes include murder, vehicle hijacking and armed robberies. He escaped from a police van after appearing in court in July, said Limpopo police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto.

Initially, five prisoners had escaped in June after appearing in court. The prisoners were about to be transported to the police holding cells when they

overpowered two offi cers. One handed himself to the police a day after the incident, while three were later captured.

"Three of them appeared in court on Friday on charges of escaping from lawful custody," Otto added. She mentioned that Mhlango will appear in the Malamulele Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.

Residents from the three villages march to the Thulamela Municipality's offi ces.

Angry residents from three villages under the Mulenzhe traditional authority have vowed to withdraw their votes for the ruling party if their demands for roads, water and electricity were not met.

This transpired last week during a march by residents of Tambaulate, Tshitomboni and Dididi outside Thohoyandou. Singing political slogans and anti-Thulamela municipality songs, they walked from their villages to Thohoyandou some kilometres away.

They handed a memorandum of their grievances to the head of the housing and electricity portfolio of the Thulamela Mu-nicipality, Cllr Matodzi Netshif-hefhe. Central to their demands

are water, electricity and roads which are not up to the expecta-tions of the community.

Representing the communities, and the convener of the march, Mr Peter Mathalise said they had been engaging the municipality about water, but all they got were promises that were never fulfi lled. “We live on the banks of the Nandoni Dam and people from afar are now drinking water from this dam, while we have to walk kilometres to get water. The other thing that is giving us a headache is the provision of electricity. They promised to refund us for the partnership money we had paid, which they are now failing to do."

He further said the other burning issue was the road from

Hollywood to Gumbani, which they want tarred. “This is a very busy road that tourists use to travel to Nandoni. We have been in constant engagement with the municipality since 2006 and all the time we are told it will be prioritized, but when the time comes, nothing happens."

He mentioned that they were tired of "empty promises and we are now giving the municipality seven working days. If no posi-tive response is forthcoming, we will take the matter further to the higher authorities."

Receiving the memorandum, Clllr Matodzi Netshifhefhe promised the marchers that their memorandum would be respond-ed to within the stipulated seven days.

Damani Powerlines started their Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge journey with a bang, following their 2-1 victory over Khubvi Peace Makers in their round-robin match at the Tsh-isesuselu grounds on Saturday.

Realizing that Peace Makers were strong in the middle of the park, Powerlines abandoned their

positions and packed themselves at the back and relied on count-er-attacks. The strategy worked for them as they managed to neutralize the opponents, who were all over them in the first 20 minutes of the game.

In the 29th minute, Powerlines opened their account. Muandani Netshidzivhani caught Peace

Makers’ keeper, Zwivhuya Mmbengeni, napping and blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

Referee Christopher Mugeri, flashed the first yellow card in the 34th minute. Rinae Likhetha of Powerlines was reprimanded, following a continued argument with the referee. The keeper of Peace Makers made his presence felt two minutes thereafter. He stretched to the limit to palm away Ndivhuwo Sieda’s volley for a corner kick.

Powerlines increased the mar-gin in the 44th minute. They were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Rowan Mukundwa beat the keeper from the free kick with a volley to bring the half-time score to 2-0.

Peace Makers came back strongly in the last half. They replaced Edzisani Mukhethiwa with Thembuluwo Tsilatsila in a bid to strengthen their striking force.

Their solitary goal came in the 78th minute via Phindulo Mot-shoare, who headed home after a corner kick that was taken by Rudzani Mmbengeni.

Powerlines played defensive football for the remaining part of the game.

The results for the other round-robin matches which were also played on Saturday are: Mudaswali United Brothers 2, Tshilungwi FC 1; Khubvi Dan-gerous Darkies 1, Khubvi Feedas All Stars 1 and Vhutalu Mountain Rangers 2, MT Green Mambas 1.

Scouting

In their losers’ final match of the MMK Administrators Pro-motional play-offs at the Rabali Stadium on Sunday, Makovha All Stars proved all the critics wrong by beating Tshakhuma RO United 2-1.

The Stars meant business from the onset, with their strikers, Emmanuel Neswiswi and Nkate-ko Khosa, giving the United defenders no time to breathe. United's full back, Khathutshelo Mukomafhedzi, denied the Stars numerous sure goals within the first 20 minutes of the game.

Stars came close to scoring in the eighth minute when their left flank, Emmanuel Neswiswi, beat two defenders in a row before facing Mukomafhedzi,

who easily dispossessed him. Mukomafhedzi made another save two minutes later. This time around he cleared away a sure goal with a header.

Tshakhuma RO United gained momentum as the game pro-gressed. They were the first to find the net.

Their bulldozer striker, Lufuno “CJ” Mugodi, forced his way through the defence of Stars in the 24th minute. Instead of unleashing from the edge of the box, Mugodi chose to share his luck with Mulisa Luvhengo, who beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

The goal seemed to have been a real insult to the players of Stars. They regrouped from be-

hind, slowly but surely taking the game to their opponents. Their efforts did not pass without re-ward as they found the equalizer nine minutes before half time. Mashudu Muthabeni blasted in a ground cutter from the 25-meter area, with the keeper watching helplessly, to bring the half-time score to 1-1.

The Stars introduced Vhatali Munyai and Humbelani Mu-laudzi for Emmanuel Neswiswi and Rialivhuwa Tshitevhe re-spectively in the 56th minute. The goal that separated the boys from the men came in the 78th minute. Nkateko Khosa scored with a header after a corner kick that was taken by Mashudu Muthabeni.

As part of their talent-scouting campaign, Black Leopards will play a number of friend-ly matches around Vhembe District in the coming weeks. The first two matches will be played at the Rabali Stadium tomorrow.

According to the spokesper-son for the club, Mr Berry Ra-munenyiwa, the campaign is the final product of the negotiations

between the club and the Safa regional associations. He added that they had reached an agree-ment that will benefit both the club and the association. The agreement will see the associa-tion interact with their clubs with a view to assembling squads that will play against Black Leopards at various places in the district.

Lidoda Duvha will play against two squads comprising players

from the Stream G and E of the association tomorrow. The first match is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 while the second one is expected to start at 15:00.

Ramunenyiwa stated that they would move to the parts of the district to play against the squads from the other streams in the coming weeks. The entrance fee to the stadium will be a mere R10.

The opening matches for the annual Mulindavhathu Soc-cer Challenge were played at the Khubvi Peace Makers grounds over the past weekend. The tournament was officially launched during a ceremony at the Tshikunde Community Crèche in Khubvi village last Wednesday evening.

Sixteen teams will take part in this year’s tournament. They are Khubvi Feedas All Stars, MT Green Mambas, Damani Pow-erlines, Khubvi African Stars, Sambandou United Profession-al, Makwarani Frelimo Boys, Khubvi Dangerous Darkies,

Makonde Young Tigers, Khubvi Peace Makers, Mudaswali United Brothers, Musasenda Big Five, Vhutalu Mountain Rangers, Lu-vhimbi Wanderers, Tshilungwi FC, Mutale Vikings and Dom-boni FC.

The winners of the tournament will receive R2 000, a soccer kit, gold medals and a soccer ball. A cheque of R1500, silver medals, soccer kit and a soccer ball are awaiting the team that will finish in the second position. The third-placed team will go home with a soccer kit, bronze medals and a soccer ball.

The matches will be played at

the Khubvi Benjies and Peace Makers grounds. During the ceremony, a local ward council-lor, P Nematenda, encouraged local businesspeople to continue sponsoring the different sporting codes, saying sport was a unify-ing factor among the people.

A local traditional leader, Vha-musanda Vho- Mulindathavha Randima, stated that they would make sure that the tournament was staged annually, with the sponsorship growing from time to time. The semifinal matches will be played on Saturday, 15 August, while the final will be played the following day.

Can Mulovhedzi win the coveted belt?Tsiko Mulovhedzi (28) of Mbaleni will meet champion Ali Funeka of East London in an International Boxing Organization world welterweight title fight at the International Conven-tion Centre in East London tonight (Friday).

The fight will take place over 12 rounds.

Mulovhedzi said that he was not moved by his opponent's threats to dent his record and that he had nothing to fear from Funeka. "We are prepared well for the the event and I am sure that we will bring home the championship belt."

He said that Funeka should not make the mistake to think "that we are going there for a holiday” and that he was not going to travel all the way to East London to lose.

Mulovhedzi said that he would use the fight as a springboard to a national title fight that could take place soon. “I am ready. I am fit physically and emotion-ally and with the support coupled with the training that I am busy with, there is no way my opponent can beat me."

“The proper maintenance of existing road infra-structure, as well as the continual expansion of the current road network, is at the heart of socio economic development in Limpopo. Our duty is to ensure that the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure lives up to the expecta-tions of the people of Limpopo.”

Hon.Premier Chupu Mathabatha

“With fresh thinking and a solid determination to live up to its mandate, RAL is successfully putting the province back on the map, bringing about a new era for transportation in Limpopo. “

Hon.MEC Jeremiah Ndou, MPL

INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS

According to Honourable MEC Jerry Ndou, the Provincial Executive Council and the new RAL management team under the leadership of CEO Mr. Maselaganye Matji, have explored several creative and innovative solutions to the roads upgrade and rehabilitation initiatives in order to improve infrastructure delivery. One such avenue is the formation of strategic partnerships with private stakeholders across the province to speed up the management, construction and maintenance of roads in Limpopo. In one such collaboration, RAL and the Exxaro Coal (Pty) Ltd will sign an Agreement by Thursday, 23 July 2015 to upgrade portions in the extent of 47.6km of roads D3012, D3114 and D3109 in the Lephalale Municipality (located in the Special Economic Zone as pronounced by the Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha).

Another Agreement that is in the process of being signed is between RAL and Rustenburg Platinum Mines (Anglo American Platinum) for upgrading of 20km of road D4180 in Sekhukhune District (located in the Special Economic Zone as pronounced by the Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha).

RAL is also in the process of finalizing a part-nership Agreement with PPC Cement, as well as the respective Limpopo and North West Provincial Governments, to upgrade an 82km secondary road between Koedoeskop and Dwaalboom, in the Waterberg District.

Other partnerships in the pipeline are with Barloworld Equipment, Bertie Van Zyl (BPK) (ZZ2), Marula Platinum, Palaborwa Mining Company (PMC) and other municipalities in the province.

In addition, the Agency has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Council for Industrial and Scientific Research (CSIR), which will see the transfer of scientific and engineering skills through research, development and innovation technologies that can enhance infrastructure delivery.

According to Mr. Matji “Government alone cannot address infrastructure backlogs. Strategic partnerships with private sector players are key to successful infrastructure delivery in Limpopo Province and the rest of South Africa’’

Limpopo roads are set to undergo a dramatic transformation in the next three years. This follows MEC Jerry Ndou’ s announcement of the R1.2 billion rollout of more than 12 major road infrastructure projects across the province that will not only ensure the improvement of road infrastructure, but also empower local businesses and communities with emphasis on women and the youth. Selected projects are:

A. Upgrading of road D1392 from Ga-Phasha to Mampuru to Tukakgomo to Makgabane in the Sekhukhune District (located in the Special Economic Zone as pronounced by the Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha);

B. Upgrading of roads D4 and D3745 from Matsakale to Altein to Shangoni Kruger National Park Gate in Vhembe District;

C. Upgrading of road D3423 from Moletjie (Road D3332) to Ga-Legodi to Mankgodi Road P94/1 in the Capricorn District;

D. Upgrading of roads and D3820 and D3205 from Babangu to Ndhengeza to Noblehoek to Maphalle in Mopani District;

E. Rehabilitation of roads D9 from Giyani to Malamulele in the Mopani District;

F. Preventative maintenance from Arabie to Marble Hall (D2534) in Sekhukhune District;

G. Preventative maintenance of road D887 from Tomburke to Alldays in the Waterberg District.

Contractors have been appointed and the site handover programme commenced on 15 July 2015 and will be completed by 31 August 2015.

According to Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha, the upgrading and expansion of Limpopo’s roads have been earmarked as a top priority for the province, as its almost 20260km of roads are vital to the socio-economic development of the province and its closest neighbours. “Our roads are not only linking major local industries, such as mining, eco-tourism and agriculture to other economic hubs in South Africa, but it’s also the country’s gateway for freight transport into the rest of Africa,” Mathabatha said.

News that Limpopo’s road infrastructure is receiving attention at the highest level, has been widely welcomed, with Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha and Honourable MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Honourable Jerry Ndou, personally monitoring progress to ensure the speedy delivery of these crucial projects.

BEYOND ROADS Although the ultimate aim of Limpopo’s roads infrastructure programme is a ro-bust, world-class network of roads in the province, Premier Chupu Mathabatha also stressed the wider importance of such a programme on the provincial economy and communities at large. “By creating infrastructure, we are also creat-ing jobs, transferring skills and uplifting communities in many different ways. It’s

absolutely critical that we empower our lo-cal suppliers and businesses, with a special focus on women and youth,” M a t h a b a t h a said.

To this end, as part of its Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment strategy, RAL has been tasked to expand its existing contrac-tor development programme, with views to partner with private companies in order to support small and emerging contractors and other related SMME’s in Limpopo.

LIMPOPO ROADS GEARED TO DRIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH AND JOB CREATION

“By restructuring RAL we’ve been able to build expertise in a variety of areas, from top management to the hiring of more engineers in-house, as well as reducing RAL’s dependence on outside consultants, all of which have improved the Agency’s ability to deliver on its mandate,” MEC Ndou said.

Roads and Infrastructure, Jerry Ndou, the transformation of RAL included the appointment of a new Board of Directors under the leadership of Mr. Matome Ralebipi, a Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Maselaganye Matji, as well as a number of key executives within the Agency. The Agency promulgated a Turnaround Strategy in 2014, whereby the Board of RAL led by Mr. Matome Ralebipi, set in place internal control measures to root out corruption and eradicate irregular expenditure, deal with adverse audit, building capacity internally in the engineering unit, introducing proactive assurance, strengthening internal controls, restructuring procurement processes to ensure compliance, termination of illegally appointed contractors and engineers. Building internal capacity is in-line with Chapter 13 of the National Development Plan (NDP) and Limpopo Development Plan (LDP).

An important part of the provincial executive’s intervention has been the complete restructuring of Roads Agency Lim-popo (RAL). According to Honourable MEC for Public Works,

A NEW TEAM. A NEW VISION.

One of the most significant improve-ments made to the Agency has been the introduction of an Internal Control Unit, designed to safeguard assets and ensure that all road infrastructure contracts are concluded in accordance with prescribed regulations.

As part of its commitment to make RAL more effective, the Agency has stressed its zero tolerance approach to fraud, not only in terms of new cases, but also in its renewed commitment to pursue past cases of irregular expenditure, whether internally or by external suppliers, in order

to recoup misappropriated funds and bring possible guilty parties to justice.

On a recent site visit to the as yet incom-plete Ga-Mampuru / Ga-Phasha Road in the Sekhukhune District, Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha, once again deplored the negative impact fraudulent activities have had in the past on roads infrastructure proj-ects and ensured communities that this will not be tolerated under his leadership. “The Ga-Phasha / Mampuru road has been ear-marked as a priority, and the rehabilitation and upgrading of this road will commence in the next few days,” Premier Mathabatha said.

A contractor has since been appointed and a site handover was held on 15 July 2015.

With a dynamic new team at the helm of RAL collaborating closely with the Honourable Premier Chupu Mathabatha and Honourable MEC Jerry Ndou, there has been a real sense of momentum in Limpopo’s roads infrastructure delivery process.

In addition to tackling past challenges, the province has already seen the imple-mentation of a number of road construc-tion and rehabilitation projects, includ-ing the construction of 21 bridges, the upgrade of 407km of gravel roads to tar, and the rehabilitation of 173km of tarred roads. This includes the recent expansion of the R510 between Rustenburg and Thabazimbi, and the construction of the Mokgalwaneng road in Moses Kotane Municipality. In addition, RAL has also added to its portfolio 19 new projects that are currently in construction phase, 35 in planning phase, and designs for 35 additional projects that will soon become a reality.

A VISIBLE CHANGEFACING PAST CHALLENGES

With involvement at the highest level, a motivated team on the ground, and a strong sense of community empower-ment, Limpopo is set for future growth.

LIMPOPO LEGISLATUREINVITES SUITABLE SERVICE PROVIDERS

FOR THE FOLLOWING BID/TENDER:

Domboni’s new offi ces nearing completion

Funeral free of charge for poor family

Following requests by the resi-dents of Domboni to have their own municipal offi ces, travel-ling long distances for munici-pal services will soon be a thing of the past. The construction of municipal offi ces at Domboni is almost complete.

The senior manager of tech-nical services of the Musina Municipality, Chuene Dinyake, said that they had ensured that the construction process was com-pleted as speedily as possible. The project includes two offi ces, a boardroom, ablution facilities, a kitchen, steel fencing, a borehole with storage facility and the in-

stallation of a septic tank.Municipal spokesperson Wil-

son Dzebu said the building of the municipal offi ces at Domboni would simplify things for all residents in the area. “We always respond promptly to the needs of our people. The community of Domboni will be able to buy elec-tricity, pay their rates and also interact with municipal offi cials.” The ward councillor, Mr Fistos Mafela, is very happy about the developmen. “This is good news to our people. They will soon ac-cess municipal services on their doorstep and will no longer travel all the way to other municipal

offi ces for services. Indeed, we are a caring government and this is what I call service delivery at its best,” Mafela said. Mafela urged the community to take ownership of the offi ces. “Ev-eryone in Domboni should make use of these offi ces. We are all responsible for our infrastructure and it is important to take good care of them.”

One of the community mem-bers, Emma Mukwevho, was quick to express her joy. “I am so grateful to see development in Domboni. Special thanks to Musina Municipality for this life-changing initiative.”

The newly constructed Domboni municipal offi ces.

A local men’s forum, Munna ndi nnyi?, recently suffered a terrible blow when fi ve computers and three laptops were stolen by thugs. “As a busy organization that also looked out for the orphans and vulnerable children and also trained them with computer skills, we suffered a lot and we were frustrated about the situation. We are taking care of and training about 100 orphans and vulnerable children,” said the chairperson of the forum, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini. On Monday, a Thohoyandou-based stationery shop came to the rescue of the forum and presented them with a computer set and fridge. The manager of BSB Trading, Ms Florence Nemakonde, said the forum was a client of their stationary shop and they decided to help them. “We also donate computers to schools, retirement of principals and teachers, disasters happening in schools and school trips. We are serious about promoting better education for learners as learners are our future leaders,” said Nemakonde. Mufunwaini is still appealing to those can help by donating computers so that these poor and vulnerable children can realize their dreams. Call him on 076 953 4355 or 083 596 7281. In our photo, Mr Mufunwaini (left) receives the equipment from Ms Nemakonde (right) while Mr Nndidzulafhi Madzole (in the middle) looks on.

Death strikes when least expected and when it happens, families become confused and do not know what to do. The same happened to the Mpande family of Manamani outside Thohoyandou.

When granny Tshinakaho Mpande (85), a well-known traditional eye specialist, passed on, the family became confused as they did not have money to bury her. They were caught off-guard and unprepared to give her a proper funeral. They looked for help everywhere, but could not fi nd any until they approached Mr Loveson Lufuno Netshiavha of Protocol Funeral Parlour.

The company has branches in Thohoyandou, Malamulele, Giyani and Polokwane and a mortuary at the Shayandima Industrial Site.

The deceased’s son, Rudzani Mpande, said the family was cash-strapped as no one was working in the family. “Faced with such a mammoth task of burying our mother without fi nances, we were left with no option but to seek help. Fortunately, Mr Netshiavha heard our plea and bailed us out and we were able to give our mother a decent send-off.”

Protocol Funeral Parlour owner Loveson Net-shiavha said when the family came to him he remembered the old woman as having helped his

younger brother who was on the brink of blindness some years ago.”We deal with very diffi cult cases where families do not have anything but want to see their loved ones buried with dignity, and when the family approached us, we did the right thing and we gave them the best service,” he said.

Netshiavha said the gesture was a form of giving back to his com-munity that supports them. “This was also a thank you to the granny for saving my brother’s eyes. We felt obliged to give her a decent funeral at no cost as our humble contribution, and we have done this to many needy families before,” added Netshiavha.

Local bikers led the procession from Mana-mani to the Makonde Graveyard, where she was fi nally laid to rest.

Family members and Protocol’s director, Mr Loveson Netshiavha (third from left), unveil the granny’s tombstone after the funeral.

Masindi Primary School's netball will team play in Pretoria.

An U/12 netball team from the Masindi Primary School will play against Water-kloof Secondary in Pretoria tomorrow (25 July).

The school earned itself many accolades from the netball adjudicators when the they represented Vhembe District in the Ubuntu South Africa Schools Netball in June, where they were crowned Limpopo champions.

Masindi, a school situated at Maila village in the Makhado area, beat Thagalang from the Capricorn district in the finals and instant-ly earned themselves a position to compete at national level. The team is not new to victory; they also tasted victory when they won the Limpopo championship last year.

The team's coach, Ms Grace Mathiba, said: “Our team had so far managed to win at different levels, despite not having a proper netball ground, training facilities and attire,” she said.

“We are able to achieve this through hard work and dedication. We know that our girls will not dissapoint us. We hope to win tomorrow's match.”

A pupil from Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School, Lucky Ndou (23), has promised to do his utmost to win a medal at the Special Olympics Sum-mer World Games in the USA.

He is specialising in the 5 000 metres race and says he doesn't want to disappoint the people of South Africa. He left for the USA on Saturday. During a farewell event in his honour at the school

last Friday, he emphasised that he wants to win the gold medal. “My training has been going very well and I'm very fit. I am also happy with my performance in the build-up to the big competi-tion,” said Ndou.

He thanked his coaches, Mr Makonde Makhumisani and Mpho Lishivha.

The principal the school, Ms Mufunwa Ramutshila, said the it

was very exciting to send one of the school's pupils to the event. “Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School is indeed a place of successful people. What you have achieved does not come cheaply, but through commit-ment.”

The Soutpansberg West Cir-cuit manager, Ms Christina Ram-ovha, said that her department was happy and proud of Lucky.

Leopards again without a head coachIt is official. The relation-ship between Black Leopards and the head coach, Mr Zeca Marques, is now part of his-tory.

The marriage between the two parties came to an end last Friday. According to the spokes-person of the club, Mr Berry Ramunenyiwa, Marques cited family problems as some of the reasons that prompted him to cut his relationship with the club short.

When asked about his new destination, Marques said that he was still making up his mind before making the next move. Al-though he vehemently refused to comment, Limpopo Mirror was reliably informed that Marques is considering taking up an offer as assistant coach for the Absa Pre-mier League side Bidvest Wits.

According to Marques, there was no feud between him and the club before his departure and that the two parties had parted ways in an amicable way.

Ramunenyiwa indicated that it was not easy for the club to say goodbye to Marques, saying it was just not easy for them to stop him. Ramunenyiwa further re-vealed that they are busy search-ing for a competent substitute.

Marques joined Black Leop-ards in January this year. His move to the Thohoyandou out-

fit came four months after his dismissal from the then Absa Premiership League side, Moro-ka Swallows, following a string of poor results. Black Leopards were lying somewhere in the bot-tom half of the sixteen-team l o g w h e n Mr Marques joined the club.

Apart from the fact that Black Leop-ards finished their league p r o g r a m m e in the th i rd spot under the guidance of Marques, they had something e l s e t o b e proud off.

They were booted out of the Nedbank Cup comple-tion in the quar-terfinal stage. Their way to the quarterfi-nal stage of the compe t i t i on went via FC Cape Town, w h o m t h e y beat 5-1 in the last-32 stage.

They met Kaizer Chiefs in the last-16 stage and beat them 2-1 at the FNB Stadium in Johannes-burg. They were eventually boot-ed out 3-2 by Vasco da Gama.

United Artists were crowned the overall champions for the MMK Administrators Soccer League at the Rabali Stadium on Sunday. They beat Rabali Pull Together 1-0 in the final.

The game was played under protest. United Artists lodged a protest with the referee shortly before the game kicked off. In their protest, United Artists al-leged that some of the players for Pull Together were not properly

registered with the team. The protest did not take Pull Together out of the game as they managed to match the boys from Lufule Village pound for pound in all departments.

Artists threatened to score in the 18th minute. Their drib-bling wizard, Thomas “Razor” Makhubele, beat three defenders in a row and unleashed a power-ful ground cutter.

The ball hit the woodwork and

bounced outside the field of play for a goal kick.

Artists were dictating the terms in the last 15 minutes of the first half, but Pull Together managed to absorb the pressure. Rabali Pull Together rectified their mistakes and started to play at-tacking football in the last half. That forced Artists to play with their backs against the wall for the better part of the last half.

Artists’ all important goal came in the 78th min-ute. This after Artists were awarded a corner kick. Vutomi Ngomana beat the keeper with a bicycle kick. United Artists frustrated the opponents by volleying from behind in the last 10 minutes of the game.

United Artists were presented with R40 000 and floating trophy during a ceremony that was held shortly after the final whistle. Artists will represent Vhembe Region in the provincial promotional playoffs that will be staged at the Mahwelereg Stadi-um in Mokopane this weekend.
