Children at Mass: If You Don’t Hear Crying, the

Church is Dying.

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the

kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." (Mt 19:14)

In some parishes there is a debate about whether crying or “active” children should be at Mass.

Here at Holy Family children are welcome at Mass.

There is a nursery available during the Masses and there is a “Cry Room” in the back of the church as well. Parents are

welcome to use both. But children will never learn to sit, let alone pray at Mass if they don’t come to Mass. If they don’t

see their parents and others pray at Mass how will they learn? Young families are a sign that the Church is young

and is growing. Families with young children are a sign that young people are being faithful to Christ and the Church.

Children can be noisy and disruptive. That is part of being a child. Adults, on the other hand, can generally control

themselves. If we adults are distracted by active or crying children we need to control ourselves. We are the “grown

ups”. Parents generally try to care for their children at Mass but occasionally a child doesn’t want to calm down or be

quiet. This is reality. Please do not give rude looks, make nasty comments or actions when a child is crying or loud. It

isn’t Christ like and it doesn’t help the parents. In fact, it might drive them away from the Church. Families with

children, even rowdy ones are meant to be in church. The Lord did not specify that the children coming to him must be quiet. Children will learn over time. Parents, please ig-nore dirty looks, unhelpful comments and rude behavior.

Sometimes people are having bad days or don’t really understand that children are welcome.

We welcome children and families; we welcome everyone because the Lord himself did.

This includes fussy babies, loud toddlers as well as grouchy adults.
