Mass Times and Intentions

Did you know?

That there is a corruption of the Novena to

St. Jude on unsourced pieces of white paper

being left in our churches that is a breaking of

the first and most serious Commandment –

“You shall have no other gods before me” –

and the 8th Commandment – “thou shalt not

bear false witness against thy neighbor”?

The actual novena prayer to our beloved St. Jude is below.

What the copied slips of paper add to the prayer is

problematic: First, it states the attitude of superstition in

writing - “Make….copies and leave 9 copies in Church for

9 consecutive days” “Must be said six times each day for

9 consecutive days”. The way that this addition sins against

the first commandment is that, in writing, it falls into

superstition.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “Superstition is

the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this

feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the

true God, e.g. when one attributes an importance in some

way magical to certain practices otherwise lawful or

necessary. To attribute the efficacy of prayers or

sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart

from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into

superstition” (paragraph 2111). As it says, the prayer in

itself and any of our prayer, without the clear superstitious

additions, can be prayed superstitiously and therefore

sinfully.

Secondly, it states “You will receive your intention before

9 days are over no matter how impossible it may seem”.

The way that it sins against the eighth is that it makes false

promises. We know that sometimes the Lord grants our

intentions through the intercession of Saints and directly to

Him, but sometimes He doesn’t. The promise is simply not

true, false, a lie. These are the kinds of things that cause

confusion and reasons that people reject our Catholic Faith in

Jesus Christ and God all together. We can say that the Lord

will answer our prayer, but he may say “no”, “not yet”, or

answer in a way that we didn’t expect or wasn’t part of our

original intention.

If you see these slips of paper with the additions I mentioned

above or similar, please help out and throw them in the trash

or recycle them. And by all means, pray the novena to St.

Jude as it is proposed below:

Novena To St. Jude

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of

Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the

patron of difficult cases, of things almost despaired of, Pray

for me, I am so helpless and alone.

Intercede with God for me that He bring visible and speedy

help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my

assistance in this great need that I may receive the

consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities,

“I love You, O my God, and my only desire is to love You until the last breath of my life. I love You,

O my infinitely lovable God, and I would rather die loving You, than live without loving You. I love You, Lord and the only grace I ask is to love You eternally…My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You, I want my heart to repeat it to You as often as I draw breath.”

Prayer Blanket Ministry

St. Michael Council of Catholic women have an active Prayer Blanket Ministry in our

parish. These donated blankets are blessed by Father and are given to parishioners,

family of parishioners and friends who are seriously ill, having surgery, homebound, in the hospital or nursing home.

They are a visual reminder that the person is being remembered in prayer, and to bring comfort to them in their time of need. Anyone wishing a blanket, stop by the parish

office or call 763-497-4673.

July is Coming to a Close!!

Next weekend is the last weekend of the month and it is time for the monthly Hanover Food Shelf Collection. Please don’t forget to bring some

non-perishable food items and drop them off on the way to Mass. Or consider a gift certificate or monetary donation.

As always, thank you for helping

feed the less fortunate.

Spiritual Adoption

Roughly 1,850 reborn babies die every day in our country by surgical abortion and that doesn’t even reflect chemical

abortions and most never receive a name.

After the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973, Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen wrote a prayer to let

the faithful know that we are not powerless against anti-life forces.

The prayer is: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much.

Please spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted, who is in danger of abortion.

And please name your baby in your prayer.

Pray this prayer every day for nine months and then spiritually adopt another baby.

Thank you. - Senior Parishioner Mr. James Wagner -

Your Pro-life Mission, if you to Accept it…

This month we begin a spiritual adoption program where each of us is invited to “spiritually adopt”

one unknown baby who is in danger of abortion. For the next nine months, your mission is to pray daily for your

“adopted child”. You may want to name your baby and give him or her an identity. At the end of the nine-month period we will celebrate the “birth” of our spiritually

adopted babies with a baby shower. In this way we can also help, in a very tangible way, the mother as she brings to term a beautiful gift of life. All gifts collected at the

shower will be given to Options for Women/Cornerstone to help mothers in need.

"Catholic's Divorce Survival Guide" The program runs from 6:30-8:30 pm at the old rectory

next to the Historic St. Michael Catholic Church every

Thursday evening. It is a 12-week video seminar featuring a distinguished team of priests and professionals who have dedicated their lives to helping people understand and

cope with loss. The program is designed for all separated and divorced individuals seeking support during this difficult time. No preregistration required and you may join at any

time. All are welcome! If you have questions, please feel free to contact one of us.

Practicing the Four Pillars of Stewardship

with our Neighbors in Need

Many of you have noticed people holding signs and requesting financial help before and after Masses.

You may have read their signs and wondered what mercy and justice required of you.

Am I helping or enabling? Is this legitimate? Why St. Michael? Why now?

As uncomfortable as this may feel, it is a great opportunity to practice the four pillars of stewardship.

Hospitality – Make eye contact and acknowledge them. This is Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poor. If you are on your way in to Mass and running a little late, say

“hello”, “I’ll pray for you” or “May God bless you.” If you have a little more time, ask them if they’d like to join you for Mass and help them follow along if they are not Catholic.

After Mass, invite them to tell you their story. Sometimes just being heard and listened to is very healing.

Prayer – Before or after Mass, ask if you can pray for them on the spot. Most people are very open to prayer.

By doing this, you are inviting them into an awareness of God’s loving presence. Ask if they have any special intentions and then begin praying with the sign of the

cross. You might petition the Lord to place the right people in their path to help them, to remove obstacles they are

facing, to provide for their specific needs and/or to bless and protect them on their journey.

Service – Give them a card with Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVdP) phone number (found in the literature rack by the entrance doors) and encourage them to call for help. Resist giving cash handouts as it often delays people

from getting the help they really need. Instead, let your love for God and neighbor overflow into financial giving to charities such as SSVdP whose members meet with those who are struggling, troubled or lost. They bring God’s merciful love into each home they enter, listen with compassion and

seek to address the root causes of crisis situations. When appropriate, they also partner with other

organizations of goodwill to meet needs. To refer those in need or to make a donation to SSVdP, you can reach them

at 763-634-1167 or by email [email protected]

Formation –St. Vincent de Paul, was a great man of charitable action but he was also a contemplative.

His contemplation of God’s generous love overflowed into practical love for the poor. Pray: Saint Teresa of Calcutta, pray that we might never fail to recognize and encounter Jesus in His “most distressing disguise of the poorest of the

poor.” Amen

As we each practice the four pillars of stewardship, we will become a parish in which all who hunger and thirst, physically, psychologically and spiritually, are fed.

Let us be a place in which the peace and joy of Christ will not only transform our own hearts and lives, but also

the entire community.
