When your student was in elementary, middle, and high school, FERPAgave you, as the parent or guardian, the right to access and control yourstudent’s educational records.

Now that your student is in college, these same laws transfer ownershipof the educational records directly tothe student; therefore, parents have noinherent rights to view, change, or controlthe student’s educational records.

Student health and safety is a top priorityat UC Riverside. In addition to the UCRPolice Department’s professional lawenforcement and patrol services, we alsohave a variety of programs to ensure your

child’s safety, including a sophisticatedemergency notication system.

We know that with all that college lifedemands, it can be tough for students tomaintain a healthy mind, body and spirit. At UCR, we’re committed to keeping ourstudents well and improving their physical, emotional, social, and academic well-being. We know that when our studentsfeel their best, they can do their best.

Our Campus Health Center, CounselingCenter, and Student Recreation Centerare resources for our students touse to get healthy and stay healthy. All fees are affordable, including thestudent health insurance, UC SHIP.

FERPAThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974is a Federal law that protects the rights of students by deningwho has access to student educational records. Educationalrecords are all records that 1.) are maintained by the Universityof California, Riverside (UCR) and 2.) are related to the student.

But What If I Want Access?Your student can give you two types ofaccess to his/her educational records,

so it is important that you communicateyour desire for access with your student.

First, your student may grant you viewingaccess to their Growl account by settingyou up as an “Authorized User.” This typeof access permits you to view designatedcomponents of your student’s educationalrecords, such as grades, billingstatements, and payments. Second, yourstudent may grant you access to verballydiscuss his/her educational records asthey pertain to Financial Aid, Housing, and Student Business Services. For eitherauthorization (viewing or verbal), yourstudent must log into Growl and go to“Authorization” to set up your access.

Will I be Contacted if MyStudent is Sick, Hurt, orin Academic Difficulty? In most cases, the University will notcontact you or provide medical, academic,or disciplinary information without yourstudent’s permission. In the case of anextreme emergency, where the healthof your son or daughter is in serious

jeopardy, or if there is a concern thathe/she poses a threat to him or herselfor to someone else, the Universitymay contact you. As a general guideline,if your student is able to communicateabout a situation, it is up to him/her todecide how and with whom to discuss.

    Is Your Student Commuting?

There are two types of commuters at UCRiverside and you, as a parent or familymember, have a very different role basedon which type of commuter your studentis. If you live relatively close to campus, your student may be living at home anddriving to school. If you live farther away, your student may be renting a room orapartment, possibly with people he/she knows or possibly with strangers.

If your student is livingat home . . .

It is incredibly easy for commuters toreturn home when they are not in class, and likely miss out on opportunitiesthat may be happening on campus. Itis important for your student to meetand engage with new people and amajority of those experiences comefrom outside of the classroom.

Try to understand if your student wantsto stay on-campus after class. A majorityof UCR’s student organizations havemeetings at night and it will be hard

for a student to be involved in one ofthese organizations if they can notmake the meeting time. UCR also hasan abundance of free concerts, movies,

Commutingand other social events that can helpyour student to meet new friends andmake connections outside of class.

If your student needs or wants to workwhile attending UCR, urge them toconsider getting a job on-campus. Thepay is comparable to other jobs off-campus and they will still get time to meetother students and make connectionshere. It will also be convenient, sinceemployer’s on-campus understandthe schedule of a busy student andwill be more likely to accommodatefor things like midterms and nals.

If your student is livingin an apartment . . .

A student that chooses to get a localapartment will still likely feel somewhatdisconnected from the campus.Encourage them to either be activeon-campus by joining a student group, attending events throughout the week, orby looking for an on-campus job (this willhelp with the whole paying for rent factor).

Make sure that they understand all the

complexities of their apartment lease.Go over the contract with them to helpthem understand the timeline that they’re

on. Some complexes may have 12-monthleases and your student may be stuckpaying for rent over the summer whenthey do not intend to live there. Also, ndout if the apartment complex is furnishedor not. An apartment that is not furnishedwill be much cheaper but how muchwill it cost to pay for the essential bed, couch, table, chairs… That is not countingall the extras that college students willlikely want (computer, television, etc.).

Also go over what is covered by theapartment’s rent and what else thestudent will pay for. Does rent coverelectricity? Cable? Internet? If they choosea complex without these things, they mayend up with monthly bills that they didn’tanticipate and may not be able to pay.

Regardless of where they live . . .

The best thing you can do is to supportthem in really getting involved at UCR.The more people they meet, the more funthey will have, and the more they’ll enjoytheir college experience. Studies haveshown that students that are involved oncampus actually do better academicallythan students who are uninvolved anddisengaged. Becoming part of theUCR family in fun and meaningful ways

often means that they will take thatexcitement and apply it to their academicsas well, succeeding as a student andhaving a blast while doing it.
