Flagler women’s head basketball coach Erika Lang-Montgomery enters her second season in 2010-11. The Saints went 8-19 overall and 3-15 in their fi rst season the Peach Belt Conference. Lang-Montgomery is expecting the Saints to improve with an infl ux of new players. Flagler was picked to fi nish in a tie for 12th in the preseason coaches’ poll. Flagler will have to replace its top three point scorers from a year ago. The Saints fi nished 11th in scoring offense last season, averaging 63.6 points per game. Looking to fi ll one of those roles is sophomore guard Charlsea Owen. She was fourth on the team in scoring (8.0 ppg) and had a team-high 35.4% three-point shooting percentage. Senior forward Adrienne Donelson and sophomore forward Jen Knurek return for Flagler in the front court. Donelson averaged 7.3 ppg and collected 5.3 rebounds per game while Knurek averaged 7.2 ppg and 5.2 rpg last season.

An emphasis in the preseason for Lang-Montgomery is to improve the team’s play on defensive end of the court. Flagler fi nished 11th in scoring defense last season giving up 72.4 ppg and fi nished 12th in opponent fi eld goal percentage (.435).

Newcomers Danielle White and Shakia Roché, both freshmen, look to add some quickness around the perimeter for the Saints. Transfer Tierra Ford brings three years of collegiate experience to the fold and will be counted on to help provide leadership as well as points and rebounds.

GuardsOwen came on strong for Lang-Montgomery during the latter part of last season. She led the team in scoring in three-out-of-the-last-seven games totaling 12 points against USC Aiken, 25 against Lander and 21 versus Francis Marion. Owen is expected to be one of the team leaders. Arianna Roper played in 24 games last season and averaged 2.4 ppg. She connected on 25.4% of her three-point shots. Ebonee Bell will be counted on to contribute right away. She graduated from Olathe (Kan.) South High School (Kan.) and helped lead her team to a school-record 24 wins as a senior. White will add depth off the bench for Flagler this year after helping lead Lake Mary High to the Class 6A State Championship. Freshman Tia Boggan will look to provide a spark off the bench after playing soccer in the fall.

Forwards:Donelson, the lone four-year player on Flagler’s roster, started 23 games last year and scored in double-fi gures in nine contests. She is one of the key components in the low-post as the Saints try to improve from last season. Donelson is third all-time in blocked shots at Flagler with 76 rejections. Knurek played in all 27 games and made 16 starts as a freshman. She had three double-doubles last year and will be counted on to be provide points in the paint and grab rebounds. Shelbi Lindsey teamed with White at Lake Mary High where she averaged 7.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game as a senior year. Marie Taylor is another freshman who will be counted on to play. The Lecanto High alum helped lead her team to an undefeated regular season, 20-0, as a junior. Roché, a local product from Nease High, averaged 13.5 ppg and 7.2 rpg as a senior. She scored more than 1,100 points, 403 steals, collected over 300 assists and earned all-county honors each year. Transfer Ashley Crider and sophomore Cassandra McGill suffered season-ending injuries during the preseason.

Centers:Rachel Brown, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, has improved her conditioning over the summer and will look to be even more of a force this season. Brown played in 20 games and averaged 2.4 ppg, 1.9 rpg and 1.1 blocks per game. She tied a school record when she rejected six shots against Lander last year.

ScheduleFlagler’s fi rst eight games will feature four at Flagler Gym and four on the road. Flagler opens its regular season on Nov. 13 when it hosts Ave Maria University. The conference season begins Dec. 4 when USC Aiken travels to St. Augustine. The Pacers were picked to fi nish fi fth the preseason coaches’ poll. Following a non-conference road game at NCAA Division I member Bethune-Cookman University on Dec. 28, Flagler will get into the bulk of its Peach Belt schedule. The Saints will host Augusta State University on Jan. 5 before hitting the road to face conference preseason favorite Lander on Jan. 8. After Flagler’s fi nal non-conference match of the season against Palm Beach Atlantic on Jan. 11, the Saints will travel to the University of Montevallo (Jan. 15) and Georgia College (Jan. 17). Between Jan. 22 and Feb. 2, Flagler will play three-out-of-four games at Flagler Gym. The Saints will host Francis Marion University (Jan. 22), Clayton State University (Jan. 29) and Armstrong Atlantic State University (Feb. 2). ERIKA LANG-MONTGOMERYHead Coach • 2nd Season

Erika Lang-Montgomery was named as the 18th head coach of the women’s basketball program on July 2, 2009, and enters her second season at Flagler.

She posted an 8-19 record in her fi rst season at Flagler, which was also the team’s fi rst year in the Peach Belt Conference. Lang-Montgomery recorded her fi rst win at Flagler in her fi rst game, vs. Ave Maria on Nov. 15, 2009.

Two tenets of Lang-Montgomery’s philosophy are giving back to the community and academic excellence. Last year, the team performed over 200 hours of community service and also posted a team grade point average of 2.8. Lauren Bailie earned a spot on the Peach Belt’s All-Academic Team. Bailie, Charlsea Owen and Jen Knurek earned Gold Scholar honors on the PBC President’s Honor Roll while Jalisa Foster and Adrienne Donelson were Silver and Bronze scholars, respectively.

Lang-Montgomery brings 14 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience to Flagler. She has served on the staffs of Purdue University (1995-96), Florida State University (1996-97), the University of Southern California (1997-2000), Wichita State University (2003-08) and most recently, the University of North Texas (2008-09).

At North Texas, she served as the recruiting coordinator for the Mean Green and head coach Shanice Stephens. In her stint at UNT, the Mean Green posted an 11-20 record and a 6-12 mark in the Sun Belt Conference’s West Division. Lang-Montgomery helped coach fi rst-team all-conference selection, Amber Jackson.

Prior to North Texas, she was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Wichita State for Head Coach Jane Albright, whom she also served as an assistant for at Wisconsin. Lang-Montgomery recruited two players who earned Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team honors, including 2005 MVC Freshman of the Year, Kiki Stephens. She helped develop the

conference’s leading rebounder, Antionette Wells, in 2005 and 2006 as well as having several players earn all-conference and all-defensive team accolades.

At Wisconsin, she helped develop players into all-Big Ten Conference selections. Lang-Montgomery was active in recruiting players in the upper Midwest and in South Carolina.

In her stint at USC, she was able to land back-to-back nationally ranked recruiting classes.

Lang-Montgomery graduated from the University of Florida in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports sciences with a specialization in sports administration. She was a four-year letter winner for the Gators and was selected to the 1989 All-Southeastern Conference Freshman Team. Lang-Montgomery ranks in the top 20 in three different career categories at Florida – rebounds (647), free throws attempted (359) and blocked shots (45). She led the Gators in fi eld goals made as a junior, fi eld goal percentage as a sophomore and blocked shots as a freshman.

A native of Jacksonville, Lang-Montgomery graduated form nearby Bishop Kenny High School in 1988. She averaged 16.9 points 13.8 rebounds per game as a senior for Head Coach Brian Whitmire. Lang-Montgomery earned fi rst-team All-City and second-team All-State honors as a senior.

Lang-Montgomery is married to Larry Montgomery and the couple has two sons, Jaden (8) and Justin (5).

2010-11 Women’s Basketball 29

2009-10 SEASON IN REVIEWFirst-year women’s basketball coach Erika

Lang-Montgomery had the unenviable task of bringing the Flagler College program into one of the toughest conferences in the country, the Peach Belt, and inheriting a team which posted a 5-24 record one year earlier. The 2009-10 season served as a classroom for both players and coach as the Saints navigated a grueling schedule to post an 8-19 overall record and a 3-15 mark in conference play.

“It was a lot of fun. It was making quick decisions, learning your team and adjusting to personalities,” said Lang-Montgomery.

Flagler, picked to fi nish 13th in the Peach Belt Conference, started the season 5-6 before jumping into league competition.

Flagler opened the season with wins over Ave Maria University and the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Two-straight losses followed, to Palm Beach Atlantic and Webber International.

Sitting at 2-2, the Saints would win three straight. The victories were against Ave Maria, Johnson & Wales University and Palm Beach Atlantic University. It would be the longest winning streak of the season for Flagler. The road ahead was going to be tougher with conference games looming ahead.

Flagler’s fi rst conference win came Jan. 6 against Augusta State University, 57-50. Three days later, the Saints nearly shocked 20th-ranked Lander University.

Jalisa Foster, the team’s most valuable player, scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the 81-75 overtime loss to the Bearcats. Foster fi nished ninth in the PBC averaging 7.3 rebounds per game. She led Flagler in rebounding in 11 games and scoring six.

Flagler started 1-1 in Peach Belt play before falling eight-straight times to conference foes.

“The conference was competitive and extremely tough. There are some incredible players in the league,” said Lang-Montgomery.

The fi nal USA Today/NABC Division II Coaches Poll saw three Peach Belt teams ranked in the Top 20 – Lander (No. 11), Clayton State University (No. 19) and Francis Marion University (No. 20).

Flagler snapped its eight-game slide with a 71-68 win over UNC Pembroke. Jen Mitchell scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half to help rally the Saints past the Lady Braves.

The Saints followed with three consecutive losses, but snapped the streak with a 69-57 win at home over Augusta State which was part of the WBCA’s Pink Zone campaign.

Flagler fi nished the season on a three-game losing streak.

The biggest differences Lang-Montgomery noticed between her team and her conference opponents were the athleticism of players and the depth of the rosters.

Flagler’s lack of depth has been addressed through recruiting during the offseason according to Lang-Montgomery. Her recruiting focused on the addition of an athletic guard to help break presses and run her fast-break offense.

Flagler will return seven players next season. Included in the mix are guards Charlsea Owen and Arianna Roper and forwards Adrienne Donelson and Jen Knurek.

“Adrienne will be a senior for us next year. I think she has a lot more in her,” said Montgomery.

Donelson averaged 7.3 points per game, 5.3 rpg and 1.4 blocks per game this season. She was fi fth in the Peach Belt shooting 51.2 percent from the fi eld and fi fth in blocked shots per game.

Owen tallied 8.0 ppg, but really came on towards the end of the season. She led Flagler in scoring three-out-of-its-fi nal-seven games and fi nished 10th in the PBC with a 35.4 three-point shooting percentage.

“I was really impressed with her shooting and her wanting to score. In the second half of the season she wasn’t thinking, she was reacting,” said Lang-Montgomery.

Knurek fi nished the season averaging 7.2 ppg and grabbing 5.2 rpg. She averaged 20.1 minutes per game.

“She was a freshman and at times looked like a freshman. But Jen has a dominant presence. I want her to be dominant inside on offense and defense,” said Lang-Montgomery.

A bevy of freshmen, including the tallest player in Flagler women’s basketball history in 6-foot-7 center Rachel Brown, gained valuable playing time for Lang-Montgomery.

“It really excites me heading into next season. Those players did get some minutes under their belt,” said Lang-Montgomery.

Roper was able to add some minutes on the fl oor as the season progressed, too. Roper, who was known more for her three-point shooting, will be one of two guards returning next season for the Saints.

The Saints will also return Cassandra McGill. She averaged 3.8 minutes per game in 12 contests in 2009-10.

In the offseason, Lang-Montgomery focused on improving the team’s conditioning.

“We’ve got to get stronger. We just need to trim down and, more importantly, become better basketball players,” said Lang-Montgomery.

THE PEACH BELT CONFERENCENow in its second decade of existence, the Peach Belt Con-ference has become one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 29 national championships and 25 national fi nalists.

Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009.

The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools fi rst met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Divi-sion II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, fi ve of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the fi rst of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the fi rst PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while AASU women’s tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2008-09 season was among the conference’s most memorable. The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s and women’s tennis teams both won their respective national championships – for the second year in a row; a feat only done once before in college tennis. In addition, the Augusta State men’s basketball team became the fi rst conference program to make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Elite Eight, Armstrong Atlan-tic became the fi rst PBC volleyball team ever to advance to the Elite Eight and the North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation and reached the World Series.

The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modifi ed to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000.

Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006.

In 2009-10, the Peach Belt grew once again with the addition of the University of Montevallo and Flagler College, giving the PBC 13 members, the most the league has ever had. The addition of the two schools returns the PBC to the state of Florida and expands the league into Alabama for the fi rst time.

David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the fi rst PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins.

The conference currently holds championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf.

FLAGLER COLLEGEFounded in 1968, Flagler College started as an all-women’s liberal arts college in the

heart of historic St. Augustine, “the nation’s oldest city.” Its main building, Ponce Hall, is a National Historic Landmark - the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, built by the College’s namesake - Henry Morrison Flagler - in 1887.

Flagler has experienced growth since its modest inception marked by several new buildings on campus. The newest buildings are the Ringhaver Student Center and the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum. The multimillion dollar Gamache-Koger Theatre is in the Ringhaver Student Center along with a lounge area, Bugg’s Bistro, pool and tennis table area, as well as several classrooms and administrative offi ces.

Flagler has been recognized as one of the country’s best by several noted magazines, including the highly regarded Princeton Review, which has ranked Flagler among its best colleges every year since 2003.

The cost is another feature that sets the College apart from many other colleges and universities. A Flagler education offers excellent value. The cost is almost half that of other comparable private colleges and on par with many large public universities. More than 85 percent of Flagler students receive fi nancial aid in one form or another.

Flagler offers 24 majors and 29 minors in selected fi elds emphasizing the liberal arts, education, business and law. Its student-faculty ratio is 21 to 1 and more than 94 percent of all classes have 35 or fewer students.

Flagler also boasts of nationally acclaimed programs: Deaf Education and Sport Management. The Sport Management major was the fi rst to be approved by the Sport Management Program Review Council. The Society for Advancement of Management chapter has won eight national titles and the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team recently took home a national championship.

Students have also chosen to study abroad in countries like: Australia, Belize, England, France, Italy, Peru and countless other countries around the world.

Living on campus is a signifi cant part of the educational experience. Flagler requires all freshmen live on campus. Flagler’s residence hall for women is Ponce Hall while the men reside in Lewis House or Cedar Hall. Recently, the College purchased the Florida East Coast Railway Buildings and converted them in to residence halls.

The Flagler campus is located four miles from the Atlantic Ocean and is in the historic downtown of St. Augustine with shops, restaurants and the Intercoastal Waterway just a short walk away. Metro areas, Jacksonville and Daytona Beach, are 35 miles to the north and 55 miles to the south, respectively.

Graduates of Flagler lead with integrity, honor and distinction.

ST. AUGUSTINE - THE NATION’S OLDEST CITY

In April of 1513, the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon landed, looking for the island of Bimini. The exact spot of where he landed is not certain, but is believed to be somewhere between Cape Canaveral and the mouth of the St. Johns River. Ponce de Leon’s stay was brief as it was during the Easter season, known as the Pascua Florida, so he named his discovery La Florida.

French Protestants, known as the Huguenots, came to northeast Florida in 1562. They were led by Jean Ribault with a goal of establishing a colony. However, due to starvation and mutiny, the settlers left to return to France. A much larger, and better fortifi ed, contingent came back to the area and built Fort Caroline where the previous settlement was located. Learning of France’s attempt to settle in what was deemed Spanish territory, King Phillip sent Admiral General Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles to ensure Spain’s hold on the area.

During the late summer of 1565, Menendez, with fi ve ships, searched the coastline for French settlements and was directed north to “the River of Dolphins”, as referred to by the French. On August 28, the feast day of St. Augustine, Menendez sailed through the inlet and claimed the land in honor of the saint. He fi nally found about 70-80 Frenchmen on Oct. 10, where they were surrounded and then executed. The inlet is called Mantanzas - the place of slaughters.

Battles with the French, the native Timucuan tribe and the English would follow. On Oct. 2, 1672, work began on the Castillo de San Marcos. The project was completed almost 23 years later.

In 1763, Spain lost its rights to St. Augustine to England via the Treaty of Paris, but Spain would regain its claim after the American Revolution ended.

Spain’s rule came to an end on July 10, 1821 when an American detachment came in to St. Augustine and were given possession of the Castillo de San Marcos.

During the winter of 1884, Henry M. Flagler would forever change the scope of St. Augustine. The co-founder of Standard Oil of New Jersey, Flagler was one of the richest men in America. A year later, he returned to St. Augustine with the goal of building a luxury resort. On Jan. 10, 1888, the Ponce de Leon Hotel opened. The country’s wealthy fl ocked to St. Augustine which forced Flagler to construct another hotel, the Alcazar Hotel, and also bought the Casa Monica Hotel across the street and renamed it the Cordova.

Today, St. Augustine is home to 12,284 people and is a bustling tourist haven. Many fl ock to St. George Street (pictured to the right) and its many restaurants and shops. Many more will head to St. Augustine Beach (pictured top right) and the pier.

Jud Damon enters his 14th year as a collegiate director of athletics and his second year at Flagler College in that capacity.

He is the eighth athletic director at Flagler since the school began its athletics program in 1973-74.

In his fi rst year at Flagler, three teams (men’s soccer, volleyball, and women’s golf) won regular season and postseason titles as the school competed in its fi rst season as a member of the Peach Belt Conference. Additionally, three teams (baseball and men’s and women’s basketball) were recognized by the conference with its Team Sportsmanship Award. Flagler also placed 90 student-athletes on the PBC Presidential Honor Roll which acknowledges excellence in the classroom and the playing fi eld. Damon’s emphasis on athletics facilities enhancement has resulted in signifi cant improvements to the Flagler Field Complex, Flagler Tennis Center, and Flagler Gymnasium. The Flagler Field Locker Room Facility, scheduled to be completed in December 2010, will house a state-of-the-art athletic training room for the care and treatment of student-athletes, in addition to modern locker room facilities for Flagler’s baseball, softball, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer teams. Signifi cant aesthetic improvements have also been made to Flagler Gymnasium and the Flagler Tennis Center.

Prior to his arrival at Flagler, Damon served as the athletics director at fellow Peach Belt Conference member institution Georgia College and State University (GCSU) in 2008-09. He served in the same capacity at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) from 2000-2008. Damon also served as the athletics director and head baseball coach at Trinity International University in Miami from 1997-2000.

In his stint at Georgia College, GCSU won its fi rst-ever Peach Belt Conference Commissioner’s

JUD DAMONFlagler College Director of Athletics

Cup while also landing more student-athletes on the PBC Presidential Honor Roll than any other member institution. The same year, nine-of-10 teams competed in NCAA postseason competition. Six-of-the-seven team sports produced winning records, with all but one fi nishing in the top three in the Peach Belt.

In his eight years at SCAD, Damon saw 112 teams appear in the postseason. SCAD fi nished in the Top 20 of the NACDA Director’s Cup standings in each of Damon’s last four years there — including an eighth place fi nish in 2007-08. He also led SCAD’s transition from NCAA Division III to the NAIA and membership in The Sun Conference (formerly known as the Florida Sun Conference) in 2003-04. In 2003, SCAD’s athletics department was honored at the NCAA National Convention with the Josten’s/National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators Community Service Award. His emphasis on student-athlete academic achievement led to over 100 student-athletes earning Academic All-District, Academic All-America or Scholar-Athlete during Damon’s tenure.

He began his career in collegiate athletics as an assistant baseball coach at UMass-Amherst, from 1990 to 1992. Prior to accepting his position at Trinity, Damon served as assistant general manager of minor league franchises in the Montreal Expos and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations. In 1998, he guided the Trinity International baseball team to the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament and set school records for wins in 1999 and 2000.

Damon earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in sport management from the University of Massachusetts. He was inducted into the University of Pennsylvania Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.

Damon and his wife Catia have three daughters, Victoria, Abigail and Elizabeth.

The Flagler College Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 2004 to honor individuals who have made a major contribution to the intercollegiate sports program while at Flagler, as well as a signifi cant impact in their community after graduating.

The Hall of Fame is open to former coaches or administrators, athletes and major benefactors or supporters. The inaugural class included 10 Flagler College alumni representing men’s and women’s basketball, men’s tennis, volleyball, baseball and softball.

President William T. Abare Jr., Ed.D., called the induction a milestone for the College. “We are celebrating an inaugural event,” Abare said at the ceremony in the College Dining Hall on March 25, 2004. “There will never be another fi rst class.”
