2012 Friendship Ambassador Training™ for All England

BackgroundThe 2012 Summer Olympics provide a wonderful opportunity to welcome people from around the world and to help those who are new to the UK feel welcome too!

Let’s inspire and equip our children, teens and parents to be intentional in showing kindness to each other -- now. Every child, teen and adult can all take on the role of a “Friendship Ambassador” to welcome the world to the UK! A culture of kind-ness, hospitality, civility, peace, good communication and friendship in London will spread to the rest of the nation and Europe.

Goals• Communities will reap the benefits of a living in a more peaceful and civil society

due to increased safety levels of society as people are challenged to live with self control in their behaviour.

• People in each community will get closer together, knowing that people care for each other and cross generational and multicultural barriers--helping teens get to know adults and grandparents and grandparents and adults getting to know teens and children as well as learning to say “hello!” in the language of every-one who attends their school, club, church or temple, sports team or who works in your company.

• That London and the UK would be perceived by the world as a safe and fun place to visit during the Olympics and not be afraid of crime, murder and gang warfare.

• That when visitors arrive in the UK they would feel welcomed with good, old-fashioned British hospitality and that they would be glad to be here! That com-munities would be warm and welcoming

Our vision is that as we approach the 2012 Summer Olympics and beyond, that everyone in the UK will choose to live with civility, kindness and good manners—in their families, at school, on the sports fields, at work, in our churches and temples and in the community—

• Whether walking down the street or shopping at the grocery store

• Plus... we’ll make new friends! We’ll never get to know someone until we’ve said “hello!” and built a friendship. It’s even more meaningful when you try to say

“hello” in someone’s first language.

How do we decrease crime? Increase civility.

We want to inspire our citizens to live with self control – and not give in to base desires to steal, lie and kill, etc.

What is the best place to inspire, train and equip citizens?

Where they live, work and play. Home. Work. Sports. Churches. Temples. Clubs.

What is the best way to inspire, train and equip citizens in civility?

Make it fun and practical, so people see the benefits to their family as well as for their businesses and schools of living with self-control and civility.

Why should we train and inspire children, teens and adults to live with civility and good manners?

People might ask: “What’s in it for me? Or what is the benefit for our community?”

• Everyone will catch the Olympic Fever... and as and “Official Friendship Ambas-sador” they feel a part of the action!

• Your community will become more fun and more welcoming & friendly

• Your business, school, club, team, church or temple will get excited about get-ting to know the international families in your community, and try to learn to say “hi!” in their language!

• More people will feel welcomed as they walk down the street!

• Families will be strengthened as children learn to be respectful, obedient, and grateful.

• Marriages will be strengthened, as couples learn grace and practical ways of showing respect for each other.

• Safer communities & less crime as people learn practical ways living by “The Golden Rule.”

Strong families build strong communities.

2012 Friendship Ambassador Training™ for All England

Strong communities build a strong nation.

Think about it...

Do you like to visit someone’s home where they are arguing, quarreling, cursing, and the house is a mess? Of course not!

It’s the same for nations!

Do you want to visit a country... or community... or play against an athletic team where there is fighting, crime, cursing, rudeness, and litter is everywhere? It’s a mess! Of course not!

The Manners Lady “Friendship Ambassador—Say Hello to All the World” commu-nity concerts help people catch the vision for being a friend and an ambassador for their family, school, community and country.

Responsibilities of a 2012 Friendship Ambassador™There are three simple KEYS that will unlock the door to meaningful relationships, communication, and multicultural friendships:

1. Respectful Attitudes

2. Respectful Words

3. Respectful Actions

1. Respectful Attitudes of a 2012 Friendship Ambassador.

Living by The Golden Rule will help us have respectful attitudes: “Treat others the way you would like to be treated.”

• Let’s ask ourselves: “How would I like to be treated if I were visiting another country for the Olympics?” Most of us would like to be made to feel welcome on our visit to the new country – whether it’s the lady at customs, the parking lot at-tendant, the person serving us coffee, or the teenager waiting with us at the bus.

• We would rather that people smile at us—rather than to be scowled at or ig-nored.

by Judi The Manners Lady | www.MannersAndCivility.com | 604.530.4346

8

2012 Friendship Ambassador Training™ for All England

• If we were lost, we would be grateful for kind assistance.

• It would even be a special treat if someone from that country invited us over to their home for coffee or for dinner. We would have made a new friend in that country!

What are practical ways for Friendship Ambassadors to “live” The Golden Rule?

• As you pass people on the street, wait for a bus or serve a customer, take the time to smile and greet them. A smile is the universal language.

• Wear “happy eyes” rather than “scowling eyes.” Our “happy eyes” come from having a happy heart!

• A happy heart comes from being thankful! We are grateful to live in a country that’s free and filled with opportunity and abundance—in contrast to many coun-tries of the world. We need an “Attitude of Gratitude!” A spirit of gratefulness leads to humility rather than arrogance. Gratitude leads to graciousness—rather than selfishness in the way we treat others.

• Treat EVERYONE with respect and kindness, not just famous or wealthy peo-ple! In fact… you never know who you maybe to talking to as you walk down the street… or serve your customers. They could be:

The sister of a long distance runner from Australia…

The Coach of the Korean Gymnastics team…

A Swimmer from China

A Javelin thrower from Scotland

Or they may be new immigrants from the Punjab province of India…

Or they may have lived in London for over 50 years!

• Actually, you never know who you might be meeting… so treat everyone with kindness and respect.

2. Respectful Words & Actions

Remember the Respectful Words of a Friendship Ambassador.

The Golden Rule will help us remember to use respectful words & actions.

• Smile, Nod & Say “Hello.”

• Introduce yourself!

• If appropriate give them a firm and friendly handshake.

• Ask them where they’re from. Most people love to talk about their homeland. So learn your geography! Take the time to learn the names of the countries coming to the Olympics.

Suggested Resource: Buy the CD “Geography Songs” by Kathy Troxel. Great songs to teach you the names of every country in the world (www.googolpowermu-sic.com; 604-720-9377).

3. Ask how to say “Hello!” in their language!

They would love to teach you!

• Try to repeat it and watch their face light up with delight as you try to say “hello” in their language. You will be speaking the “language of their heart.” They will LOVE you & you’ll become their favourite person in the country! They may be-come new friends and invite you to come visit them in their country!

• Remember: A friend is just a stranger that you haven’t met yet!

Suggested Resource: “Song “Say ‘Hello’ to All the World… The Language of Your Heart” on Judi The Manners Lady’s CD “It’s Fun to Have Good Manners!” (www.cdbaby.com/cd/MannersLady)

4. Offer to help!

• Ask “May I help you?” or “Anything I can do to help?”

• Be helpful! Do what you can to help or if you can’t help them, find someone who can.

5. Remember “The Five Fabulous Phrases™” – five phases that can change the world!

1. “Please”

2. “Thank you!”

3. “You’re Welcome”

4. “Excuse me.”

5. “I’m Sorry, will you forgive me?”

We all remember people who showed kindness to us when we were tourists in other countries!

Let’s be welcoming in simple and kind ways!

SummaryThe world is coming to the UK— Olympic athletes and their families, political lead-ers and tourists!

This is a wonderful opportunity for British citizens across the country to welcome the world! What visitors will remember most are:

• the friendly smiles that greeted them at the airport,

• the pleasant “hellos” from people as they walked down the street

• and the helpful Brits who greeted them at the stores or helped them find their way around.

Judi The Manners Lady and her team is excited to partner with schools, churches, temples, and companies across the UK to make London the friendliest, safest, city to ever host the Olympics… in 2012 and beyond!

So together, let’s “Say Hello to all the World!”
