9The Learning ClimateLearning new things requires a safe environment, where trainees are free to make mistakes & look foolish.

Needs AssessmentTraining preparation begins with a thorough analysis of the trainees needs.

Trainers need to know WHO their audience is and WHAT their workplace learning needs are.

The needs assessment becomes the CORE of any training program.

It provides the foundation for PROGRAM DESIGN and establishes the criteria for measuring program success. Needs AssessmentTrainers need to design program content to fit the specific needs of their trainees.

They need to understand the nature of their trainees jobs and the problems and frustrations they face so that their training content addresses these special needs. Uncovering these needs is called needs assessment.

Needs Assessment

You must know who you are training & what they need to know before you plan your program.Needs AssessmentDid you ever try buying something marked:One size fits all?

How did it fit?

Needs Assessment Every word, activity, and moment of your program should be relevant to the trainees jobs.

They should see how it will truly be able to help them do their jobs better.

Needs Assessment QuestionsQuestions for the TraineesWho are your internal & external customers? What training have you received to help you do your job? What are your essential daily duties? In what areas do you excel? In what are areas do you need additional development? What are the most difficult aspects of your job? What obstacles do you face? What type of feedback do you receive about your performance? How often do you receive it? Instructional ObjectivesAfter the needs assessment, trainers can draft learning objectives. Objectives stateWhat learners will be able to know & do as a result of the trainingHow the training will solve the trainees problems, decrease their frustration, make them more efficient, and add to their job satisfaction.

Instructional ObjectivesTraining objectives can be written the same way performance appraisal objectives are written using the SMART format.

Utilize (RESULTS-ORIENTED) 5 strategies (MEASUREABLE) for overcoming stage fright (SPECIFIC).ANDDistinguish (RESULTS ORIENTED) between a manuscript & extemporaneous speech (SPECIFIC).

(ONLY 2 OBJECTIVES MAKE THESE ATTAINABLE IN ONE HOUR)

Instructional Plans(Agendas)Instructional plans are the roadmap to any training session. They help trainers present ideas coherently and stay on schedule so that their content fits into the allottedtime frame.

Instructional Plans(Agendas)Training PlansWith the needs assessment and learning objectives, map out a Training Plan. The Training Plan is your Road Map. It allows you to visualize your program and provide a broad view of what you will do to accomplish the learning objectives.
