Wheatland-Chili School District Joins the WHEC News 10

Weatherbug® Schools Network

The WeatherBug Schools Program was made possible

from grant money received from Assemblyman Harry

Bronson’s office to support the Wheatland-Chili K-12 STEM Initiative. The program will enable students at both T. J. Connor Elementary School and the Wheatland-Chili Middle/High School to more effectively understand the science of meteorology. The District has installed the new WeatherBug weather station, and lightning sensor at the North Road Campus. The station is able to provide weather data for meteorological teams at WHEC News 10 and

stations across the country, to broadcast online and on-air. The students and teachers will use the information gathered from the weather station to enhance their current science, technology and math curriculum using the WeatherBug Achieve wed-based educational software tools. In addition, the District will also be notified with more advanced warning of lightning and other forms of severe weather alerts that may affect community events and safety.

As you enter each of the buildings, there is a WeatherBug monitor that displays the up-to-the minute weather forecast for Scottsville for all students, staff and parents to see. The District is currently seeking other grant opportunities to fund the HD Camera that will provide images live from Scottsville. The District is excited for this possible enhancement. Currently, the visual weather pictures displayed are from the Monroe 2 BOCES Camera located in Spencerport, New York, where many of our staff and

students travel daily.

The WeatherBug forecast for Scottsville, New York is also just a click away. Log onto the Wheatland-Chili Central School District Homepage, click on the WeatherBug Icon for the daily, hourly and extended forecast. There is also a free app that can be downloaded to smart phones. Look for the WeatherBug Symbol to install on your device to have the Scottsville forecast at your fingertips. Tune in to our WeatherBug partners at News10 NBC as they highlight our school district’s local forecast.

School Resource Officer to Arrive in Wheatland-Chili

Through the efforts of Senator Patrick Gallivan and collaboration with the County of Monroe and the

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Wheatland-Chili is pleased to share that we will soon have a School Resource Officer in the District for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year. We are also happy to report that Deputy Laura Michaels has been assigned this duty. Although this assignment has not yet begun, we want you to know that the routine

presence of the Monroe County Sheriff’s vehicle at T. J. Connor and the Middle/High School means that Deputy Michaels has arrived and is assuming her new duties.

Mock Newbery Students Skype

The fifth-grade students in the Mock Newbery Club skyped with Hill Elementary on Thursday, January

15. The students learned about each other’s school during the session. They will be meeting face to face on February 3 when we celebrate the book that we voted to win the Newbery and the book the American Library Association Newbery

Committee chose to win. Maybe they will be the same book. We will find out on February 3.

T. J. Connor Night at Boys’ Basketball Game

Saturday, January 17, was “T. J. Connor Night” at the Boys’ Basketball games. Between the JV and Varsity games, students from T. J. took the court to participate in warm-up type activities lead by Terry Bayly-Henshaw’s dad.

Then, the T. J. students lined up with the JV team to welcome the Varsity team

into the gym. The students had a great time cheering on the boys as they took Pembroke.

Kindergarten “Launch” into Project Lead the Way

Kindergarten students began their first Project Lead the Way Launch module, Structure and Function. To learn about the engineering process, the

Kindergarteners are building beanstalks to support a golden, weighted egg, based on the story, Jack and the Beanstalk. They are also designing houses that won’t blow down after reading The Three Little Pigs. (A fan is taking the place of the Big Bad Wolf!) If you see

a Kindergartener, be sure to ask them what they’ve learned during Project Lead the Way.

Swimming Hosts Its Annual Senior Night

On January 20th, the Swim team hosted its last home Swim meet of the season against Oakfield-Alabama/Elba. This meet showcased our four seniors, and coaches and teammates commented on their contributions both in and out of the pool. The night also featured our first diver this year, Senior Miquel Vazquez. The Swim team will compete in their Sectional meet this Saturday at Gates Chili.

Runners Keeping in Shape through the Winter Season

Several members of the Cross Country and Track and Field teams are taking part in a winter race series hosted by the Greater

Rochester Track Club. Their races range from 3.1 miles to 8 miles. Last weekend in Spencerport, the race time "real feel" temperature was below zero. Good luck to everyone and stay warm!

Winter Basketball Updates

The Girls’ Basketball team is having their most successful season in recent memory. The girls record is currently 8-6, and they are ranked 3rd overall in Class C3. The girls have a few games left, away at Oakfield, Cal-Mum, and Notre Dame, and home against Lyndonville (2/5), and Elba (2/13 - Senior night). The girls are hoping to continue their success to earn a first -round bye and a home sectional game. Congratulations to the girls on a great season so far!

The Boys’ Basketball team is currently 11-1, and ranked 2nd

in class C3 and 15th in the state. The boys team has been

earning a lot of positive press the past few weeks, with multiple highlights on Channel 13, and with senior Rodney Roberts and coach Scott Lund being interviewed by the CNB High School Sports Radio show. The boys beat Avon this past Tuesday by 24 points in non-league play. The boys finish

their season over the next few weeks with away games against Cal-Mum, Oakfield (in Cleveland), Attica, Kendall, and Elba, and play their final home game of the season on 2/18 against Notre Dame, which is also Senior Night.

Wheatland Boys’ Basketball to Play on a Professional Court

This Friday, the Boys' Varsity Basketball team (accompanied by the Girls' JV and Varsity teams, the Varsity Cheer team, and the JV Boys team) will travel to Cleveland, Ohio to play against Oakfield-Alabama at the Quicken Loans Arena. The boys tip-off will be at 2:15. After the game, the entire group will travel across the street for some food and rest before returning to the arena to watch the Cleveland Cavs (including LeBron James) take on the Sacramento Kings. The teams will stay in Cleveland overnight before returning to Scottsville

Wheatland Girls’ Basketball Wrestles into the Home Stretch

of Their Season

The winter sports season in New York State is a very long season,

beginning the 3rd of November and not concluding until at least the end of February. With midterm exams this week, the girls team did not have any games, and needed a break from the busy practice schedule. The coaches coordinated a "Sumo Wrestling" practice by renting sumo suits and protective equipment and letting the girls have some fun for a night. This practice was fun

to see, and the girls loved taking a break while continuing to build team unity. Thanks to coaches Todd Grimes and Marc Amico for putting this together.

Middle School Students Attend Solo Festival

Over this past month, several students from middle school band participated in Winter Solo Fest. Each student learned a solo, scales, and

performed sight-reading for a judge. All the students did a terrific job. We appreciate Mrs. McDougall having students prepared and ready to perform.

Chemistry Students Visit the University of Rochester

Mrs. Iovoli's Regents Chemistry classes attended the "Chemistry in Action" show at the University of Rochester. Students witnessed live demonstrations of many spectacular experiments, performed by U of

R undergraduate students. These experiments included "The Marshmallow Jet," "Elephant Toothpaste," and "Rainbow Metals." Following the field trip, students discussed their observations as a class. They were then able to apply their knowledge from our Chemical Reactions unit to form conclusions about what was seen in the show, and which types of reactions occurred. It was quite a fun, educational

experience.

High School Art Work on Display

Each year art teachers in the Rochester and Finger Lakes Region are asked to submit artwork for an exhibition held at Rochester Institute of Technology. This year teachers in the region were asked to submit two pieces of student artwork.

Wheatland-Chili is represented by Emily Avallone and Shelby Burch this school year. The students received the honor of having their artwork selected by art teacher Mrs. Savage to

be displayed from January 30 - February 23. An opening

reception will be held from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 30. Both students have computer-generated typography pieces in the exhibit. Shelby's piece is based on a rose and titled "I Blossom" while Emily's piece is a self-portrait titled "This Is Me." Phrases and words were used to

create the artwork based on their personal interpretation of their chosen subjects. The computer skills needed to complete

the artwork were developed in the Computer Graphics Class last year and then applied this year in the Advanced Placement 2-D Design Class.

Student Recites Pledge at Board Meeting

One student from the High School led the community in reciting the Pledge of

Allegiance at the beginning of the Board of Education meeting held on January 26,

What are the Common Core Learning Standards? You have probably heard them mentioned a lot in

both the news media and by your child’s teacher(s). The Wheatland-Chili Central School District would

like to provide parents with a better understanding of these standards by holding a workshop to explain

the Common Core Learning Standards in both ELA and Math for grades K-12. At this workshop, parents

will not only be given background knowledge about the standards, but they will be able to participate in

hands-on learning and testing activities similar to what their children experience in school.

Fourth Grade Learns about Martin Luther King

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., the fourth-grade classes learned about his life last Friday. The classes enjoyed watching “My Friend, Martin.” Afterwards, each student reflected upon the accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr, and shared their thoughts. Then each student completed a mobile indicating ways they could help their community, the country, and the world. Each student also signed the "I Have a Dream"

pledge. They spelled out peace on a larger poster using cut-outs of their hands. Please stop by T. J. Connor to see the mobiles and poster in the fourth-grade hallway.
