T. J. Connor Celebrates the 100th Day of School

T. J. Connor students celebrated the 100 th day of school on February 12, 2016. Students were counted as they entered the building and this year’s 100th student to enter T. J. was Chad Newman. He received a bag full of goodies from Mrs. Greene. Students celebrated

throughout the day by wearing special glasses and crowns. They also

completed activities involving the number 100 such as finding out where 100 steps from their classroom lead

them, building collections of 100 objects, and creating a picture of what they will look like 100 years from now.

What an exciting day for our students.

PTA Hosts Second Quarter Honors Breakfast

This past Tuesday and Wednesday, MS/HS students were once again treated to a beautiful breakfast and awards ceremony sponsored by the WCCSD PTA. The

events were well attended and the morning provided the opportunity to come together as a

family and community to share in our students’ successes over the last marking period. A special thanks to all of our parents who worked to make this event happen and an extra thanks to Mrs. Lois Hagadorn for taking the photos of

these terrific kiddos!

First Graders Learn about Sound

First graders have begun their first Project Lead the Way module. During this module, students have been exploring concepts related to sound by using cup phones. They learned that sound vibrations can travel along the string as long as

the string is tight; but, if they put their hand on the string and stop the vibrations, the sound will not travel. They also learned

how to use the app, “Popplet

Lite” to share information. They practiced using the app by taking pictures of each other and then adding some text. The students are becoming sound experts.

Student Book Budget Crew Orders Books for Library

Some of our fourth graders have joined the new Student Book Budget Crew. The Student Book Budget Crew is working with Mrs. Arendt to decide what new books to buy for the library. The students are Dylan Muller, Madison Baird, Bridgette Lange, Ben Allen, Chyene Whitcomb, Tera Milazzo, Carissa Keister, Marena DeBruyne, Riley Buske, Olivia VanDenBush, Julia Lynch, and Jacob Spence. They began their work by surveying students at T. J. Connor to determine what books interest them, collecting surveys from over 200 students.

They then used that list to compile some hot topics. Our budget crew chose some

books from our recent book fair. They also met with Linda Startup (a Scottsville resident) from Perma-Bound. Ms. Startup came to our school with a variety of

books for review by the students. The students have created a list of books from the Perma-Bound collection as well as from their online catalog. The students will

be finishing up their order next week. When the order is placed and the books arrive, the students will help unpack and prepare the books for display. They have learned a lot about decision-making, managing a budget, and keeping in mind the interests of others

in their purchases.

T. J. Connor Students Continue to Lead the Way

On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, T. J. Connor Elementary School hosted a Project Lead the

Way (PLTW) Launch Showcase. Teachers and administrators from local school districts were

in attendance for this session. Executive Director of Curriculum, Jennifer Sinsebox, Project

Lead the Way Launch Lead Teacher, Pauline Emelson, and Elementary Curriculum Leader,

Amy Richmond, facilitated an overview session of the Launch program and District’s

implementation of the pre-engineering units of study into the elementary science curriculum.

The highlight of the morning was the showcase presented by the twenty-two K-5 students

and grade-level teacher representatives, Pam Merritt, Kindergarten; Amy Richmond, first

grade; Kristen Hotaling, second grade; Maggie Spuhler, third grade; and Pauline Emelson,

supporting fourth- and fifth-grade students. The visitors had the opportunity to see PLTW

Launch in action as the students demonstrated the pre-engineering activities. The

participants were impressed as the students were able to describe the engineering principles

involved in their grade-level-specific, project-based learning experiences. Wheatland-Chili

Central School District is the only school district in the Rochester Area that has implemented

the Project Lead the Way Launch Program. This is the second year that T.

J. Connor students have been engaging in pre-engineering curriculum. The

program enhances elementary students’ ability to collaborate, think

critically, and problem solve while engaging in hands-on learning.

Congratulations to all the student and teacher participants that showcased

how T. J. Connor continues to Lead the Way.

Budget Outreach Meetings

We are now preparing for the 2016-2017 school budget, which began with a presentation to the Board of

Education on December 7, 2015. The budget development process will continue with an overview of the

2016-2017 budget process on Monday, March 7, 2016, and Monday, March 21, 2016, at

the regularly scheduled Board meetings beginning at 7:00 p.m.

An opportunity to review the budget process is being provided to the community

through budget outreach meetings that will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016,

and Monday, March 14, 2016. Each meeting will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00

p.m. at T. J. Connor Elementary School on the 3rd floor in the Board Room.

You can find all budget presentations that were shared at Board of Education meetings in December,

January, and February at the following link: http://www.wheatland.k12.ny.us/services.cfm?

Physical Education at the Ice Arena

The two weeks before vacation, T. J. Connor’s third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students

learned to skate during physical education classes. To encourage students to develop

interest in lifelong physical activities that are available in our community, students had

their regularly scheduled P.E. classes at the Scottsville Ice Arena.

Each year students continue to develop their ice-skating skills.

Thank you to all the parents who

helped with tying skates and helping

students learn to skate. Thank you also

to the Scottsville Ice Arena for your

continued support of this program.
