By Jack Chandler Somewhere around the year 2,000 B. C. (or pos- sibly 500 A. D.; there are conflicting reports as to the timeline), the Patwin (Pat-ween) Indians were the first inhabitants of the area we now know as West Sacramento. The Patwin were connected by lan- guage with the Nomlaki and Wintu people, to the North. The Patwins lived between what is now Su- isun, Vacaville, and Putah Creek. The Patwins were a peace- ful lot, operating as hunt- er-gatherers. This was in contrast to the more no- madic and temperamental warrior tribes in Southern California and the Plains states. Apparently, the abundance of flora and fau- na in the territory put the Patwin at ease. They had a banquet of ducks, geese, deer, elk, salmon, sturgeon, mussels, pine nuts, black- berries, wild grapes, and other menu items at their disposal. Acorns were fash- ioned into a mush which was baked in below-ground pit ovens and re-appeared as bread. Small groups of Patwin men would venture out, looking for deer. One man would wear a deer head, in order to get closer to a deer without alarming it. This raises questions. Was the wearing of deer’s head an honor, or the re- sult of someone in the group drawing a short straw ? The head had to have been cumbersome, no doubt. And, wouldn’t the deer notice that the “deer” walked upright on two legs and had several accom- plices waiting expectantly behind the nearby trees ? Perhaps not. Patwin life was dictated by three things: the Sea- sons, the Weather, and the Creator. Each day was a brand new beginning and significant. Each day brought new messages. It was on such a morning, a little over four thousand years ago (or 1, 516 years ago), that Dark Hawk, the head- man of his village, assem- bled his tribelet around a campfire at sunrise. It was mid-July. He stood in a no- ble pose, his back ram-rod straight, and squinted at the sun burning through the oak tree leaves, and thought to himself, “Gonna be HOT today…” On cooler days, he would be wearing a cape made from rabbit skins and a headdress sprouting raven or woodpecker feathers. As the group chose their positions around the fire, and dug into their fresh chunks of acorn bread, Dark Hawk recalled some- thing that his own father and previous tribelet head- man had told him: “I know it gets hot out here, but…remember to hydrate.” He sat down and motioned to Singing Bird, his squaw, to bring a gourd of water. One by one, Dark Hawk went around the circle and asked each one directly, “What did you dream of last night ?” This was a customary way of orchestrating the day’s events. Dark Hawk would methodically take into ac- count, on some level, the details of each dream and plan accordingly. For each day was singularly import- ant. Nothing was to be tak- en for granted. Great Elk, who was con- sidered a seer of sorts since a number of his dreams had predicted the weather and crop factors, was al- ways first to speak. “Dark Hawk, my brothers and sisters. I dreamed of a man stepping on the moon. He stepped out of a silver house, and wore the skins of a bear. But, they were white skins.” Murmurs rose from the circle. There was much nodding of heads and strok- ing of chins. “I had another dream. I saw a man walking on a road. He was looking at a thin, black stone in his hand. Looking hard. He was very serious. He tapped the stone with his finger, and spoke as he held it up to his ear.” There was a snicker from one of the young boys in the group. A sharp glance from Dark Hawk silenced him. “He continued to look hard at the stone, as he was walking across a sec- ond road. But, he didn’t notice a large silver, noisy wagon that ran over him.” A barely-subdued gasp broke from the circle. This sounded like something closer to the bone, more immediate than a fantastic image of a man on the moon. Dark Hawk and the tribelet pondered this dream of the thin, black stone and the silver wagon. What could it mean ? It sounded like heavy stuff, and could not be taken lightly. After all, each day was singularly important, and nothing was taken for granted. Dozens of elected officials joined hundreds of caregivers for the el- derly and disabled who are mem- bers of the Service Employees In- ternational Union (SEIU) Local 2015 as they celebrated the open- ing of their new West Sacramento headquarters on Wednesday, May 11. SEIU Local 2015 is the largest union of long term care workers in the nation with representational responsibility for over 325,000 long term care workers – nursing home and home care workers – through- out California, 20,000 in Sacramen- to County alone. The Sacramento office, located at 681 W. Capitol Ave, Suite 100, will serve as the home base for ef- forts to advocate for improvements to California’s long term care ser- vices, economic justice for all Cal- ifornians in low-wage jobs, among other policy priority issues impact- ing care workers. With a dozen worker leaders and organizers, the new headquarters also gives the nation’s largest union of long-term care workers a significant footprint in the Sacramento region as repre- sented workers begin contract bar- gaining with local counties in the coming months. Some current legislative priorities for Local 2015 include: -Caregivers Count Bill (AB 2079): Bill which would increase direct care staffing levels at skilled nurs- ing facilities to improve the quality of care for seniors, the infirm, and the disabled. -Secure Choice Board Retirement Bill (SB 1234): Bill which would require employers to afford Cali- fornia workers a retirement ben- efit. -Under the “Dignity Can’t Wait” slogan, Local 2015 will continue to work closely with SEIU State -Council to ensure the 7 percent restoration of hours cut to the In-Home Supportive Services program. ObituaryBetty Ellen SchmitJune 7, 1920-March 8, 2016Mom left us on a glori-

ous March morning in her adopted home, An-chorage, Alaska with her family by her side. Mom was born in Berke-ley, California in 1920. Even as she was proud to be a Californian, she came to love her Alas-kan home and when it snowed, she thought it was just for her. She was one of the first per-sons to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge the day that it opened. As a Californian, her favor-ite sports teams were the 49ers and the Gi-ants. She also enjoyed NASCAR. She was a long-time resident of Broderick, California, where she worked for

the school district as a school secretary at several different ele-mentary schools. Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Dan-iel Schmit, Her oldest son, Bill Ward, and her youngest child, Jim Field. She is survived by her daughter, Sha-ron Aue of Alaskda, her granddaughter, Mi-chelle Maxwell of Tex-as, great grandson, Alex Maxwell of Texas, niece, Kim Panke of Califor-nia, stepson, Timothy Schmit of California, stepson, Greg Schmit of California and stepson, Darren Schmit of Utah. Yolo County’s Arthur F. Turn-er Community Library, located at 1212 Merkley Avenue in West Sacramento, has received a $500 matching prize from ScholarShare, California’s 529 College Savings Plan. Last year, ScholarShare partnered

with California public libraries to conduct drawings that gave partici-pants, ages 18 and under, a chance to win $500 in the statewide Sum-mer Reading Program. More than 790,000 Californians of all ages signed up at their local library for the summer reading program. Ear-lier this month, ScholarShare an-nounced the 40 winners; one from each of California’s senatorial dis-tricts. ScholarShare also gave a

matching $500 prize to each win-ner’s local library, which in the 6th Senatorial District, benefi tted the Arthur F. Turner Community Li-brary. “Congratulations to our local win-

ner!” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “Reading over the summer is a great way to maintain the reading skills of students, as well as increase their fl uency, vo-cabulary and comprehension.” “It’s an honor for the Arthur F.

Turner Community Library to re-ceive this prize,” said Programming and Outreach Librarian Touger Vang. “The $500 will be reinvested into prizes and programs for this year’s Summer Reading Program at the Yolo County Library.”

Yolo County Library’s Summer Reading Program runs June 1 through August 15 and all eight branches will host an array of spe-cial programs and reading incen-tives for children, teens and adults, such as Olympic art and games, an-imal exhibits, puppet theatre and more. Additionally, all participants who sign up for the program in per-son at their local library branch, or online, will receive a ticket for prize drawings and a free gift. For more information or to sign up

The City of West Sacramento (CWS), as well as every other city in the State of California, has been struggling with funding their pro-grams for preschool children for many years. The American In-stitutes for Research found that across California more than 33,000 four year olds and four times as many three year olds from low-in-come families are still unserved by any publicly funded school readi-ness program. At last week’s State of the City

Address, Mayor Cabaldon called for a sales tax hike of ¼ cent on the dollar for the November ballot. His plan included “quality preschool for every child”. The CWS was select-ed by First 5 CA to be one of nine Power of Preschool (PoP) sites in California. The CWS program, the Univer-

sal Preschool for West Sacramento (UP4WS) began serving children in 2006. First 5 Yolo was the ini-tial operator of the program, and in 2009 the CWS took over the op-eration. The CWS has remained a PoP site. The basic premise of the program was to provide free high quality preschool to 4 year olds in a variety of settings, regardless of family income levels.First 5 Yolo Children and Families

Commission of Yolo County helped

5,000 children in 2015. The coun-ty invested $3.1 million in local programs and services and served 5,400 children during the fiscal year 2014-2015. This was accom-plished by using the First 5 Yolo grants. UP4WS receives First 5 Yolo fund-

ing for childcare providers and pre-school teachers to raise the quality of its programs. Grants from First 5 CA have been the primary source of funding. Measure K provided $100,000 and First 5 Yolo, matched that amount. This year, however, the amount was $50,000.First 5 CA is changing their pro-

gram model in July of 2016. A new program, IMPACT (Improve and Maximize Programs and All Chil-dren Thrive) will take its place. Not only will the funding be reduced but it will affect the quality of the pro-grams. First 5 IMPACT will work to form partnerships with First 5 CA and the counties to provide fam-ilies with the support they need to optimize their children’s develop-ment and learning.Since California established the

State Preschool Program in 1965, modeled after Head Start, elected officials have been looking for per-manent resources to provide low-in-come children a pre-kindergarten experience. AB 1331 (Unruh) cre-ated the Governor’s Advisory Com-mittee on Preschool and Educa-

tional programs, which was funded until 2003. On May 4th, Assembly Bill (AB)

2660 (McCarty) was introduced. Early Edge California sponsored this bill to ensure that the State of California develops a comprehen-sive plan to provide a high-quality, pre-kindergarten programs for Cal-ifornia’s disadvantaged children. AB 47 (McCarty) of 2015 would

have established the Preschool for All Act of 2015 to require, on or be-fore June 30, 2018, all eligible chil-dren who are not enrolled in transi-tional kindergarten to have access to the California State Preschool Program the year before they en-ter kindergarten. Governor Brown vetoed this bill stating that the discussion on expanding state pre-school should be considered in the budget processIt is time that Early Childhood Ed-

ucation has a permanent funding source. It has been more than fifty years since the State of California established the State Preschool Pro-gram. Our elected officials should make it a priority to find the neces-sary permanent funding resources to underwrite this program. Our childrens’ futures demand it.

City college’s West Sacramento campus hosted second “Kinders Go To College”Approximately 90 kindergarten students from the

Washington Unified School District in West Sacramen-to attended a special “Kinders Go To College” event last Friday at Sacramento City College’s (SCC) West Sacramento Center. The students were treated to a number of special college “classes” (15 minute work-shops) in fields such as dental assisting and hygiene, nursing, art, personal finance, and robotics. “We need to increase the college-going rate in West Sac-

ramento and Yolo County,” said Art Pimentel, Dean of SCC’s West Sacramento Center. “The earlier we start the process of getting students to know about college, the bet-ter we do at getting them here when the time is right.” Sacramento City College partnered with the Yolo

County Office of Education and WUSD on this program. “We want to engage students and their families early

on,” said YCOE Counselor Lori Perez. “We cannot wait to begin preparing students for college and careers.”In addition to the classes, students received a special

T-shirt honoring them as the high school Class of 2027, a backpack and other goodies from SCC and the Yolo County education office.“Kinders go to College is a perfect example of the

commitment and investment we need to make in our children’s futures,” said Linda C. Luna, WUSD Super-intendent. “The best way to help our kids be successful is to communicate to them early in their educational journey, giving them some sense that their education has purpose.”

The Nice Guys The MPAA has rated this RWarner Bros. takes us

to Los Angeles of 1977 in “The Nice Guys”, a pri-vate investigator mur-der mystery where bod-ies are piling up as an unlikely duo follow the winding and hilly path to get to the bottom of it all. This could be a 1970’s style exploitation festi-val of violence, but when you have Ryan Gosling channeling Lou Costello and Russell Crowe as a strong-arm for hire, the director/writer Shane Black goes for comedy with his violence for a tongue-in-cheek bit of entertainment that is a sure crowd pleaser. It begins with the in-

vestigation of the death of Misty Mountains, a stag film actress, by Hol-land March. March is the somewhat inept private eye played by Ryan Gos-ling. His snooping leads him to elusive Ame-lia, played by Margaret Qualley. She’s the key for more information, but Amelia has hired a strong man, Jackson Healy, to keep March from finding her. Healy’s played by Russell Crowe, and af-ter he roughs-up March, he feels bad about it and the two team up to find out what had really hap-pened to Misty.Amelia disappears and

everyone seems to be after her. The investiga-tion leads them through the underbelly of the Los Angeles pornography world of that era, filled with goons and wiseguys with possible high-level government connections. Suddenly, the dynam-ic duo are summoned to meet Judith Kuttner played by Kim Basinger, who is wonderful to see on screen again. She re-veals her connection to Amelia and insists that the two find her fast.

Naturally, the plot thick-ens. This has to be one of the

most interesting mix-tures of crime world grit and comedy that I have seen. Unlike the cynical and pessimistic come-dy one sees when this type of thing has been done in the past, here the comedy is, in fact, funny when juxtaposed over the at times vio-lent settings. Director Shane Black co-wrote this script with Antho-ny Bagarozzi and it may be one of the best bits of movie writing up to this point of the year. Clever, witty and most of all fun. It is as if amid this set-ting your two principals are Abbott and Costello. There is even one scene where Gosling, after falling down the hillside at a producer’s multilev-el Hollywood hills home, finds that he has landed next to a murder victim, and is unable to talk from fear, gasping and wheezing exactly the way Lou Costello did in countless movies.Nick and Nora Charles

had Asta, and these two have the smart assistance of March’s daughter Hol-ly, (Angourie Rice), who moves in to help out her pop as this case becomes more complex. This mov-ie does have some conti-nuity flaws, such as the Mercedes-Benz driven by Gosling which has the famous three-point-ed star on the radiator in some shots, but not all of them. Depending on the shot, alternating visible wear of the car’s paint job leads one to believe three identical model Mercedes cabriolets were used for the picture. There’s an important

plot element; that of find-ing a movie film print that has evidence to help the case, yet in one scene a 16mm film projector

is shown as having run the film in a private res-idence, and later on it will be shown on a 35mm Christie platter projec-tion system at an auto show. That would be im-possible. The projector film gauge sizes are dif-ferent. The era of the story

(1977) is not as in-your face as many other mov-ies that take place in this time period, making it much more realistic and enjoyable. Nice to have a clever action comedy for summer! Despite the violence, I recommend this picture for your en-tertainment. Smart and stylish.

Angry Birds The MPAA has rated this PGColumbia Pictures and

Sony bring us “Angry Birds” a story conjured from the popular elec-tronic game by writer Jon Vitti. In the game, birds are flung from a slingshot. Here, the writ-er has invented a story about Red, a red bird voiced by Jason Sudeikis, who always has a chip on his shoulder and is con-stantly disgruntled. He lives on an island of hap-py birds that cannot fly. As the picture opens,

we are introduced to many of them: Chuck, a yellow non-stop talking bird voiced by Josh Gad, Bomb, a large explosive (literally) black bird voiced by Danny Mc-Bride, a gigantic big red bird called Terrance, giv-en growling life by Sean Penn and Matilda, a group leader in an anger management class voiced by Maya Rudolf.Anger issues resolved

or not, a new presence makes its way to Bird Island, a large boat that drops anchor on Red’s nest home and reduces it to rubble. Who are these

new visitors? Why, pigs of course! Leave it to actor Bill Hader to voice the principal nautical pig in a way that raises red flags for Red.Sure the pig is funny,

but not trustworthy. Through his anger Red sees that these pigs, with their bombastic forced friendliness, gifts of trampolines and big rally presentations to win the confidence of the birds, must really be up to something else. In “Wizard of Oz” like

style, Red gathers two of his classmates from an-ger management, Bomb and Chuck and set off on a long trek to find the mythical Mighty Eagle, whose statue has adorned the center of Bird Island since time immemorial. Mighty Eagle will surely know what to do about the porcine invasion. As they travel they wonder among themselves what “Mighty Eagle” will be like. The voice of Mighty Eagle is provided by the most famous little per-son actor of today, Peter Dinklage. Will they find Mighty

Eagle to save them from the pigs? Will they figure it out themselves? Nor-mally at this juncture I’d

tell you to go find out for yourself at the theatre, but this picture, cleverly made though it may be, is not going to get any better than it is, and it is not very good. This is because I found an inor-dinate amount of mean spiritedness in Red, the protagonist bird. He’s just not angry; he’s not at all likable. The scenario of an anger management class, and the flip na-ture of Red himself is not suitable for children. This movie is made for

the sensibilities of a cyn-ical adult and with the mean spirit you find in stand-up comedy, veiled as children’s entertain-ment in animated form. I absolutely do not recom-mend this for children on that basis alone. Kudos

to the writer for making a story from where there was none, a video game with birds flying from a sling shot, but it would appear that it frustrat-ed him so much to create it he took it out on the story-line. This movie is a real stinkeroo! Most-ly FOWL, but for a few laughs. Now in Sacramento at

the Tower Theatre!

Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig announced today that a Board of Parole Hearings Commission denied convicted murderer Kenneth Ray Buffer’s request for release from state prison at a parole hearing at Folsom State Prison in Sacra-mento on May 11, according to a press re-lease from Reisig’s office. In March of 1995, Buffer and Michael

Andre Todd attacked the victim, James Williams, at a home in West Sacramen-to. Buffer, now 54 years of age, lived in Sacramento at the time. During the tri-al, witnesses testified that Williams owed Buffer and Todd thousands of dollars as a result of drug deal. Buffer severely beat Williams and Todd burned him with a knife that had been heated on a stove. They also poured a caustic liquid on Wil-liams’ body which caused severe burns. Buffer later drove Williams, who was nearly dead, to a parking lot where he was abandoned in the back seat of his own car. Williams died days later after being taken to the hospital. After the jury convicted both Buffer and Todd, the trial judge sen-tenced Buffer to 25-years-to-life in prison for the murder.Yolo County Supervising Deputy District

Attorney Garrett Hamilton appeared at Buffer’s Parole Hearing, arguing against his release. This was Buffer’s first parole hearing. In denying his release for three years, the commissioners found that Buf-fer was still a potential threat to public safety and was minimizing his own role in the murder. They also found that he was not expressing full remorse and empathy for the victim. He will be eligible for pa-role again in three years.

Wiegel, who has more than two decades experience working with abused and traumatized children and their foster, birth and adop-tive families, will give an overview of attachment par-enting, discuss how vital a parent’s role is to the trust cycle, and look at “emergent resiliency”. Some of the top-ics to be discussed include: Defining attachment, how attachment can become compromised, behaviors associated with insecure or anxious attachment, how grief and loss play into the equation, effective parent-ing techniques that work with hurt children who don’t trust and are striving to con-trol their world.
