These trees are avail- able for free to residents, schools, parks, etc. in neighborhoods north of the deep-water channel. Kelly Conroy, the new executive director of Tree Davis, explained that the program aims to increase tree canopy in neighborhoods with a traditionally low number of trees, as a healthy urban forest provides so many benefits to neigh- borhoods including higher property values, lower crime rates, reduced rates of chronic ill- nesses like asthma and diabetes. “By planting trees in these areas, we aim to not only build a healthy urban forest, but healthier communi- ties,” Conroy explained. Funding for the Trees for Tomorrow program has been provided by the California Green- house Gas Reduction Fund through the Califor- nia Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), Urban and Community Forestry Program. The grant provides over $500,000 to plant and care for 1,000 new trees in under-can- opied neighborhoods of West Sacramento. The Urban Forest Manager for the city of West Sacramento has selected a number of tree spe- cies that are appropriate for the city’s climate and soils. “We are really focusing on large-can- opied trees which will provide the greatest ben- efits while making sure the right tree is plant- ed in the right place by considering things like underground or overhead utilities, space avail- able for the tree to grow, etc. We want these trees to grow for many years and provide ben- efits – not complications with infrastructure,” Conroy said. A healthy target for canopy coverage in any city is 25 percent, she said. “It can be hard to translate that into a specific number of trees, and we know 1,000 new trees will make a dif- ference, but there’s always room for more!” Conroy said Tree Davis currently works with many community partners to provide more workshops throughout the community. “We are hoping to give workshops at local schools, churches, and community centers to bring the information directly to each neighborhood. We are also hoping to work with interested neigh- borhoods directly. If someone is very interested in planting trees in their neighborhood and can gather their neighbors together, we can create a custom workshop and tree planting event with them!” Tree Davis is a non profit urban forestry group founded in 1992. The mission is to enhance and expand the urban forest by teaching residents how to plant and care for trees. This will be the first program partnership with West Sacra- mento and Tree Davis is excited to bring their resources together to make a big impact in Yolo County. The benefits trees provide like reduced greenhouse gas in the atmosphere don’t stop at city limits; these 1,000 trees will directly ben- efit the residents of West Sacramento and the entire region. The brewery would be 22,374 square feet and would include a 3,100-square-foot taproom. The applicant indicated they plan to produce 1,200 barrels of beer in the first year and increase to 10,000 barrels a year within 5 years of open- ing. River Rescue On the evening of March 14, at approximately 10:50 p.m. the West Sacramento Fire Department, in conjunc- tion with Sacramento City Fire Department, responded to a reported male adult yelling for help from the Sacra- mento River. On arrival in the area, witnesses reported the male had been in the water for approximately ten minutes. Fire crews from both sides of the river began their search from the Tower Bridge downstream. West Sacramento’s Fire Boat 41 was launched from Miller Park where they began an upstream search. Sacramento Metro Fire’s helicopter joined the search and at one point located the victim downstream but quickly lost him due to debris and high water flows. All fire department units were redirected further downstream. Boat 41 responded back down stream where they were waived down by fish- erman in a boat on the river who reported hearing the male yelling for help and directed Boat 41 to the area. Boat 41’s crew used search lights to find the male floating on his back with his face just above the water. The male was pulled into the boat and immediately transported to Miller Park for medical aid and transport to the hospital. In-stead, Luke Forbis and Joe Scali, two of the driv-ers that received their license last year stepped up and trained our new employees Sean Green and John Keith. Both drivers had no problem passing the difficult tests required by the DMV and are now licensed to oper-ate our commercial vehi-cles. Congratulations to all four.

POLICEPolice Services Coordi-natorWelcome, Taylor Nelson.

InterventionOn March 17, officers

were dispatched to a sui-cidal female on the “I” Street Bridge. We found the woman standing on-top of the bridge in tears and several bystanders were trying to talk her down. Officer Thruelsen, a seasoned veteran offi-cer quickly arrived and he along with bystand-ers convinced the young woman to come off of the bridge. Our Mental Health Clinician quick-ly responded and was able to facilitate imme-diate mental health as-sistance. We captured a photo of the bridge, next is Officer Thruelsen buy-ing a sandwich for the young woman and Thru-elsen briefing the clini-cian. This is a job well done by members of our community who worked together with police and avoided a tragedy.

While the Community Cen-ter opened its doors five years ago, Learning Lad-der turns 4 years old on April 4. On that first day, there were just three chil-dren enrolled. Now with a yearly waiting list of close to 100, it’s definitely a success.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the proper-ty. You should also be aware that the lien be-ing auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult ei-ther of these resources, you should be aware

that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgag-ee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trust-ee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www.nationwideposting.com, for informa-tion regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9411-8844. Information about postpone-ments that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive reme-dy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Hello, My Name is DorisThe MPAA has Rated this RRoadside Attractions of-

fers “Hello, My Name Is Doris,” which is based on a 2011 short film called “Doris and the Intern” by writer/director Laura Ter-ruso. The short was fea-tured in the Sarasota and Bermuda International Film Festivals. Writer/director Michael

Showalter has expanded the story from the short film into what is a show-case of wonderful fun for its star, Sally Field. She plays a spinster, Doris Miller, who has spent the last few years tak-ing care of her mother, who we learn has died by the opening scene, which

takes place at the funer-al. There, Doris’ brother Todd, played brilliantly by Stephen Root, along with his wife, try to convince Doris to sell her mother’s home, which happens to be where Doris lives among her clutter and that of her mother before her. Natu-rally, there is a cat, too.Bereft and feeling pres-

sure, she continues at her office job of the past 20 years to get by, a job which she has to take a ferry and additional public transit to get to and from work. There must be something else in life for her. Her life-long friend, Roz, is played by Tyne Daly in what is a delightful return to fea-ture movie work for the ac-tress remembered for her

many films and television show Cagney and Lacey.Doris goes to a Willy Wil-

liams self-help seminar and meets the speaker at the reception to follow. Peter Gallagher plays Wil-ly Williams, saying just the right words to get Do-ris to lose her inhibitions and come out of her shell. Nothing is impossible, he assures her, if she just looks at things from a dif-ferent perspective by turn-ing impossible into “I’m Possible”. Armed with new enthu-

siasm of any possibility becoming real for her, she sets her sights on a very young man just brought into the firm, John Freemont, played by Max Greenfield. They met in a

crowded elevator where they are forced to be in such close proximity that she becomes smitten. She devises many schemes to have any chance to be near him, and hilarity ensues. Before you think that

this is some sort of broad physical comedy, I’ve not yet related the sweet na-ture of this movie and the wonderful performances of both Sally Field and Tyne Daly. Sally’s spinster will res-

onate with you. You know someone like Doris Miller in your own life. The bit-tersweet challenges she faces in living in the home in which she grew up.

With all of her own clutter on top of that, her own par-ents is something she can-not separate herself from due to a deep emotional connection. Yet, she has the determination, often with the most hilarious re-sults, to follow through on her new-found passion for the new young man in the office. Then... she discov-ers social media.Armed with knowledge

from John’s social media pages, she learned how to align herself to his in-terests for better chances at connection. The movie has charming daydream sequences, reminding me much of the Danny Kaye

picture “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” that lead you down the path of an ideal outcome, only to snap you back to the reality of the story suddenly and al-ways with a good laugh. This is a sweet spin on a

spinster from Sally, and a touching heartfelt come-dy that is just the kind of wonderful story that you don’t see enough of these days at the movies.

as personal hygiene and sanitation. From there, they had one hour to prepare and present the three course meal that was displayed on their menu. During this time, they were judged on sta-tion prep, safety and san-itation, knife safety and skills, workspace cleanli-

ness, technique and tast-ing. For their appetiz-er, River City presented crispy shrimp with honey soy glaze. Their entree was chicken piccata with lemon caper butter sauce, fresh asparagus and creamy Parmesan orzo. For their dessert, they presented poached pear raspberry coulis. The California Restau-

rant Association did sup-ply chef mentors, and for River City, that man was

Kevin O’Connor. Kevin is the founder and head chef at the new Saddle Rock Restaurant opening soon in Midtown. Though Kevin was there to lend some guidance, make no mistake, the kids did all of the work. Although San Juan High

School took first place in the competition, Cheryle Sutton said of the River City team: “They didn’t place, but they developed some great interpersonal relationships, took away a knowledge of the complex-ity of the industry, and had a unique experience they will never forget. I am very proud of them.”

in Sacramento, Sacra-mento Tree Foundation has provided the Sac-ramento Shade Tree Program in partnership with SMUD for many years with a focus on shading homes to reduce energy use. Davis Tree’s program is similar (though not funded by a utility company) in that it provides free trees throughout the commu-nity and really focuses on educating residents. “The urban forest be-

longs to all of us and these programs really strive to build commu-nity investment in our trees to make sure they live long, healthy lives. Without community members planting, car-ing for, and advocating for our trees, our urban forest would not be sus-tainable. Sacramento Tree Foundation was also awarded a grant through the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund which focuses specifi-cally on under canopied neighborhoods in South Sacramento,” Conroy said.To receive up to three

free trees, residents must attend the work-shop to learn about prop-erly planting and caring for their tree. They must also promise to plant their trees in respon-sible locations on their

property (call 811 before you dig to check for util-ities, make sure the size of the tree will not inter-fere with any infrastruc-ture, etc.) and to keep their tree(s) alive and healthy so they contin-ue to provide benefits to the entire community. Residents must also live within the target area for this project. With a Bachelor’s de-

gree from UC Davis in Biological Sciences coupled with a love for environmental educa-tion, Conroy joined Tree Davis as the Executive Director in September 2015 after four years with Sacramento Tree Foundation. “Trees have always symbolized so much to me – vitality, strength, perseverance, etc. They also give so much to our urban areas like cleaner air, cooler temperatures, and beau-tiful landscapes that I can’t help but appreci-ate them!”And as an aside, asked

what her favorite tree is, Conroy said, “My fa-vorite urban tree is the Ginkgo. It’s such an an-cient tree with interest-ing fan-shaped leaves and it turns vibrantly gold in the fall. It also happens to do very well in our hot, dry climate!”The next workshop

will be held on April 6 from 6 to 7 p.m. inside the Community Center at 1075 West Capitol Ave. For more informa-tion, email [email protected] or call 530-758-7337. People can also follow Tree Davis and the West Sacramento Tree Program on Face-book to stay up-to-date on the program, work-shop dates, planting events, and more.
