By Monica Stark [email protected] West Sacramento’s Heather Moore decided to line Grande Vista Avenue and Claredon Street with nearly 300 American flags, bringing joy and pa- triotism to her neighborhood. Neighbor Marie called the display “wholesome and prideful.” Margaret, who also lives in that area, said hap- pily, “They were beautiful.” Heather said she started to put some up on Friday and Saturday she got up and did the rest of them and took them down on Tuesday. “It was fun. I started with a few houses and decided I’d just do the whole street,” she said. Heather got the flags from a box inside the VFW. “I had to iron all of them. They had been wrapped in a box for so long. No one wanted them. And I thought, shoot they are here. Everyone loved it. There was not one person upset.” A proud West Sacramentan, Heath- er said the 4th of July to her means freedom and the ability to enjoy her neighbors. “I love my neighbors – the fact I can go ask a neighbor for an egg or they can ask me for something. We wave to all of our neighbors when they come up on our street. (Regarding the flags) I thought, ‘Why not? It’s Amer- ica. It’s our birthday. The VFW had them; it didn’t kill me and I got a great response. During Christmastime, Heath- er likes to decorate “Charlie Brown Christmas” style. “I have a full on dog house. Christmas is my favorite holi- day. We go all out. I have to start dec- orating in middle of November. Once Thanksgiving dinner is over, I flip a switch and there you go.” N EWS- L EDGER 52nd Year No. 46 Serving the West Sacramento Region Since 1964 Wednesday, July 13, 2016 USPS 388-320 35 cents Entire Contents Copyright News-Ledger 2016 West Sacramento Local Scene See what’s going on. She got picked up at offi ce of emergency services in the In-dividual Assistance Program. In 1999, she applied at

DMV, ending up in the Le-gal Affairs Division writing regulations (administrative law) for 10 years. Her nonprofi t Latino Infor-

mation and Resource Cen-ter created an audio book of the driver license manual in Spanish because of the high illiteracy rate. Her nonprofi t was also the lead organiza-tion that responded to DMV proposed regulations that would require applicants to have a birth certifi cate that was no more than six months old from issue date. After Maria retired she

went back to working cam-paigns, including with Kev-in McCarty for assembly, Norma Alcala for supervi-sor, Hundal for Mayor, and then Alcala for school board. The school board had a va-cancy, which Maria applied for but didn’t get. When the mothers of “Brod-

erick Boys” came to her asking for help, Maria became aware that she lived in “the safety zone” as opposed to the gang injunction zone. She started attending city council meet-ings and due to dissatisfaction with meeting procedures re-garding public participation, she formed the nonprofi t and has been teaching the moth-ers how to organize. Maria sat on the board of

directors of Festival De La Familia from 2007 to 2009, was on the board of directors Washington Neighborhood Center in 2009. Currently, she’s the administrative co-ordinator for the Chicano Latino Caucus of the Cal-ifornia Democratic Party, with the goal of putting Latinos in public offi ce. Ad-ditionally, she founded Goo-gle Community, Spiritual Awakening with over 8,000 members.

CorrectionRegarding some information printed in the July 6th News-Ledger edition there were some inaccuracies in

the Joey Lopes Park story. Lopes fought for the championship of the world twice (not three times), once for the lightweight championship of the world in 1957 and another time for the super featherweight champi-onship of the world in 1961. Also regarding the last sentence about the family farming the land where the park is located, that is false. They owned and farmed the land parallel to the Joey Lopes Park two lots over to the west.

Fridays are for Senior Citizens at the California State FairBy Jan DalskeAnyone over the age of

62, is invited to celebrate their seniority on “Seniors Savings Fridays” at the California State Fair. A dis-counted admission of $8 is offered on Fridays July 8, 15, and 22, 2016. The gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. All senior citizens ride free on the grand car-ousel and the giant wheel. It is best to get to the fair-

grounds, located on Cal Expo Boulevard, early to secure a parking place near the entrance gate. By arriv-ing when the gates open, you can make your way around the State Fair when it is cooler, fi nish up your day early and get home be-fore dark. Before you leave home,

make sure you have packed any medications that you might need during the day. Do you have your contact information with you in case there is an emergen-cy? Once you are inside the fair, don’t forget to pick up a map of the State Fair, and the daily schedule of events. Note any emergen-cy help locations, just in case you may need them. Do you know where the re-strooms are located?

By looking over the sched-ule you can plan your day, see where the activities are that you are interest-ed in seeing, and note the times that they start. You should be wearing com-fortable walking shoes and have a summer hat with you for shade. Cool clothing is great on those hot July days at the State Fair. As far as amenities go, se-

niors and others are offered wheelchair and scooter rentals, which can be re-served ahead of time. If you need to stay out of the July heat, the Expo Buildings are air conditioned. Califor-nia Buildings A, B, C and D offer great exhibits and en-tertainment. There are also animal shows and competi-tions, live music from big-name bands and tons of de-licious fair food. The State Fair is also the only time of year when people can ride the monorail, one of only two working monorails in California. There is a covered picnic

area complete with misters at the Coca-Cola Prome-nade. This location has a great view of the SMUD Promenade Stage and is just steps away from a va-riety of food options. You

might want to start by en-joying the live horse racing at the Miller Lite Racetrack Grandstand and simulcast betting at the Satellite Wa-gering Facility. Here are a few of the ex-

hibits, demonstrations, and events that are taking placing on Friday, July 8. The Wildlife Exhibit is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Forest Center. You can walk the nature path to learn about the many animals that are native to our California forests. You will see rescued animals and learn their stories, and by doing so, increase your appreciation of wildlife and their forest habitats. From 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.,

there will be “Homemade Fruit and Berry Jam Judg-ing” at the Save Mart Su-permarkets California’s Kitchen - Cooking Theatre. From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the River City Quilters Guild will be presenting quilting demonstrations along with hands on quilt block de-signing for the public at the California Crafts Exhibit in the Expo Building No. 8.At the Do It Yourself Cen-

ter, Save Mart Supermar-kets California’s Kitchen – you can learn from “The

Best” at the Food Preser-vation Demonstrations by the Master Food Preserv-ers of Sacramento, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. They will also be sponsoring a Cheese Shoppe, which is open until 8 p.m. The Or-land Farmstead Creamery was awarded fi ve medals in The California State Fair’s Commercial Cheese Competition. Find out what winning cheese tastes like! Watch Ballroom Dance

Performances by Arthur Murray Carmichael from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the PG&E Center Stage B. And come back later in the eve-ning from 8 to 8:30 p.m. to see the Acrobats of Hebei China. The California State

Fair, which is held at the Cal Expo in Sacramento each July, is a multi-week event that has been taking place for over 150 years. It’s a non-stop exhibition of fun and entertainment for the whole family to en-joy, with activities ranging from thoroughbred racing to corn dog and pie eating contests and athletic events like soccer and motocross as well as engaging educa-tional events for kids.

Back in February Lisandro “Chando” Madrigal announced the purchase of a large West Sac facility that will be used for torti-lla production as well as a restaurant. While they’re moving slow-er than previously thought, Chando says they want to do it right and will be adding about 20-25 people to staff that location. Many food industry

businesses get their start with food trucks and pop ups, but Chan-do actually recently purchased a food truck, an old Krush Burger truck, to accompany their brick and mortar locations. That said, he’s bring-

ing his truck to the Off the Grid festival. Hon-ored to be a part of the event, Chando said as a businessman he’s very careful with who he partners with. “So when they reached out to us it was pretty straight for-ward that it would be a great partnership ... They pioneered the food truck movement in the Bay Area. I appreciate work that they’ve done in the food truck move-ment. By associating ourselves with them, it’s a great partner-ship. We’re excited to be a part of it. Chando’s Tacos will add value to the relationship. We’re growing really fast.”That said the more

exposure of Chando’s Tacos means the more opportunity to get their food into other people’s hands.”We are jazzed to be working with Off the Grid. They have a

great reputation in the Bay Area. They put on fantastic events. When they reached out to us, we were excited and honored to be a partner with them. We’re ready to rock and roll. “Chando said a deli used

to be in place where the big facility currently is. Besides being used for

Off the Grid, the old Krush Burger truck will be used for other catering events, a big part of his business. Actually having started the business catering in people’s backyards, ca-tering is near and dear to his heart. The nickname “Chan-

do” stemmed from peers who couldn’t pronounce his legal name “Lisen-dro.” Growing up in Ol-ivehurst, then Tijuana, Chando’s father opened a tortilla factory. Then life happened and he fell in love and moved to Northern California in 2000.Speaking on the growth

of his company he says it’s definitely been fast when compared to oth-er companies. “We’ve had tremendous sup-port from community, fans, customers and we couldn’t do it without love and support. It’s been a lot of work for family and myself. We risked a lot and fortu-nately it’s been paying off and it’s rewarding. We’ve been able to gen-erate a ton of jobs. One thing that baffles me is that several families are supported by an idea I had in my back-yard. That’s what moti-vates me to continue.”The entire business

really is a tribute to his father who passed away in 2007. At the

time, Chando had been working for Apple, but took time off work. “It was a major blow. I was his right hand man,” he said. They had a great relationship but the passing gave Chando a different perspective of life. “You were born into this world and you don’t know how long you have to be here to leave a mark. Looking back at my father’s legacy, I asked myself, ‘Did he pass away happy?’ I just wanted to do something that I had more control of, not leave leave it up to my boss. I wanted to be able to control my destiny. I loved Apple. It taught me a lot, but I kinda like what I am doing right now a little bit more.”Before he even started

catering he did potlucks and of course his food would be the first to disappear. “I’ve toyed around with different recipes. I have a lot of years of investment,” he said. “Tijuana is probably the best place for Mexican street food. In terms of tacos, carne asada, there’s nothing like Tijuana, but when I came to Olivehurtst, didn’t do things with passion. I don’t know if they are burnt out. I never once was satis-fied.” Later up here in

Northern California, he bought a motorcy-cle, developed an idea and began his catering. But, after about near-ly five years of driving around delivering food by motorcycle, he said he realized something important. “The people I was going after not the ones I wanted to make tacos for. After 4 and a half years of ca-tering, I came up with an identity. I knew who Chandos was. I found the Arden Way location and I was able to open that. Then I bought the food truck ... the rest is history.” Giving credit where

credit is due, Chando said his biggest assets are his employees and his customers. “Without any of them, I wouldn’t go anywhere.” Speaking for his goals

in the future, Chando said he hopes to build an infrastructure that can support scalability and growth. When the 10,000-foot West Sacra-mento facility opens up fresh tortillas will be made and food prep will be done on a huge scale. “We will have more control of our product and will support all the stores. By February 2017, Chando expects to have West Sacramen-to and two other loca-tions. “once we have the

facility and the foun-dation laid out then stuff’s about to get real. Now it’s about really seeing how far we can take this business. We want to be able to have a lot of people enjoy Chandos tacos around Sacramento and even-tually get into the Bay Area, Davis, Vacaville. Right now our mind is set on Sacramento and neighboring cities: Fol-som, Elk Grove, Citrus Heights. At the Arden location,

people from all over the world and country come to experience Chando’s Tacos.”I like seeing people traveling from

different locations. I don’t know if it’s from Yelp or Trip Advisor, but they visit us from all over. I could be hav-ing a conversation with someone else. They’ll pull in and you could tell people are traveling with loaded cars. Some-times they have bikes with them. They’re not Sacramentans. It’s re-ally cool. I get a kick out of observing people in line. I get people of all walks of life. That’s satisfying. It’s more satisfying then getting the paycheck. I don’t know if it’s that or if it’s watching the first bite.”

Matías Bombal’s HollywoodThe Secret Life of PetsThe MPAA has rated this PGUniversal Pictures

brings us “The Secret Life of Pets”, an animated movie in 3-D allegedly for children, but likely a pic-ture more appreciated by adults. In it, we see the adventure of a beagle-like Max, voiced by Louis C.K., whose master has brought home another giant and furry dog, Buddy, voiced by Hannibal Buress that will upset Max’s perfect world. Max confides his woes

to a neighbor cat, voiced by Lake Bell. This cat is quite cat-like and one of the movie’s fun creations. Max’s day goes from bad to worse when a rivalry be-tween the two dogs sends them out of the house to-gether to duke it out. Af-ter a few exchanges, they are forced into a world of seemingly cute pets that are the unloved pets of the world, operating a secret underground in the sew-ers of the metropolis. To save themselves, Max and Buddy play tough animals that have done-in their masters, all as a ploy to escape. The head man of the underworld is a wolf in sheep’s clothing known

as “Snowball”, voiced by Kevin Hart. Well, he’s not really a wolf, but a fluffy bunny.Sadly, although rated

PG, I find that the 3-D and underworld elements in the sewer to be much to frightening for children. A moment with several snakes looming right into your lap in 3-D scared me and I was fully aware it was “only a movie.” The various animal personali-ties and behavioral types were well executed and entertaining, but much of the humor was of a crude and low nature, again, not so great for the smallest kids. “The Secret Life of Pets”

is directed by Chris Re-naud, and features an effective music score by Alexander Desplat. Some lovely voice talent is fea-tured, including Albert Brooks, Jenny Slate and Dana Carvey. Adults will laugh and enjoy the mov-ie and there are indeed many funny moments. Fun for pet lovers, but again, might be too scary for small children. For more information
