ID Cards Beginning october your must have your West Meadows Id card or a drivers license with your current address to enter the facility. If you do not have a West Meadows Id Card please bring proper identification and we will make you one.

Club Hours We are now open 7days a week from 8:30 am until 9:00 pm.The pool hours are from 8:30 am until dusk. There is a $2 per person or a $5 per family guest fee for all non residents at the community club. all non residents must be accompanied by a resident. Non residents may use the facility without being a guest by paying a $20 per day usage fee or may join the club for a cost of $1800 the first year and $1000 for each year after.

Tennis News Now that school is back in session are you looking for activity for the kids after school? Fall tennis lessons begin in september. starting at age 6 and going to 15 there are private and group

lessons available for your children. Private lessons can be scheduled anytime during the week while group lessons are offered Monday thru Friday at 4:00PM and 5:00Pm. Classes meet once a week, last one hour and cost $50.00 per month. Class sizes are limited so if you are interested contact Chet at 977-1160. our Junior tennis teams will be beginning soon also. There are different levels of play, 12 and under “B”, 12 and under “a” and 14 and under “a” and “B”. our teams compete in tampa on sunday afternoons at 1:30PM. Chicken Soup for the Soul EvEryonE!By Katy Cox

he way of the foot and hand” is roughly what the word taekwondo is

translated into from Korean. For Christopher Baluvelt, a 20 year veteran soldier wounded by a bomb in afghanistan, “The way of the foot and hand” would be an inspiring journey for himself and his family. This story begins in 2010 when Chris was an army Platoon sargent, via the Connecticut active duty National Guard. He and his men were in afghanistan doing their job; going into villages making sure everyone was alright and asking if the village was having any taliban activity. as they were leaving this one village, taliban soldiers hiding in the village had a bomb hidden in the road and set it off as their vehicle drove over. The explosion was directly under Chris’s seat! “No one was killed, it was a good day” Chris told me. He suffered so many injuries! a collapsed lung, arm nerve damage, broken nose, wrist damage; The vertebrae in his neck and back had to be fused together, pelvis

fractured, left foot crushed, left leg suffered a compound fracture. Chris’s right leg was in such bad shape that later, at Walter Reed Hospital, it was taken off at the knee. Quite a beginning! Most of us would consider what had happened, an end. Chris made it off the ventilator, bones healed, and Chris started adjusting to his new life of being retired at age 45. He, wife Bernadette and their three children, Zachary, Mia & Joe, all relocated to the beautiful community of Grand Hampton here in New tampa. a lifelong dream of Chris’s has always been to become a tae kwon do Black belt, but with the constant pain from his injuries, Chris thought this dream could be passed down to his son, Zachary. His son was enrolled in the Us tae Kwon do center, right up the street from Grand Hampton and dad would take his son to class 3 days per week. one practice, while Chris was watching Zachary, Grand Master Lee asked him what he was doing; “Nothing” was the reply. Why don’t you try tae kwon do for just 3 months…? Chris started out just doing hand motions. “Now Chris can kick his prosthetic leg up and has amazing balance!” says Chris’s mentor, Master Vahid smith. This past august, Christopher Blauvelt traveled to daejeon Korea with Grand Master Lee for the World tae kwon do Hanmadang 2013. He competed in the senior III division Power Breaking-Knife Hand. Chris won the Gold Metal breaking 14 stacked bricks with one hit of his right fist. Chris also tested for his Black belt. “I’ve had to face lots of difficulties to keep practicing tae kwon do, some of them almost

unbearable”. Passing the Black Belt exam with prosthesis was hard, but what Chris said the most difficult was testing barefooted! He wears custom inserts in his shoes for balance. “There were very tough moments, but I was ready”. I found myself so inspired by Christopher’s story! This handsome, charismatic, strong and humble, husband and father of 3, through a lot of effort and motivation, managed to stand out among about 3,000 competitors from 43 countries, all of who were without any physical handicaps. The Korean Press was all over him! Grand Master Lee, who is known well and highly respected in the

Korean tae kwon do community, translated for Chris during the many tV and press interviews. Chris says his success comes from his teachers, Grand Master Lee and Master Vahid smith, whom he practices with!Through Us tae Kwon do, Master smith & Chris plan to bring a group of students to future Hanmadang competitions starting next year! The school will be holding fundraiser events to pay for the travel expenses of students. Like Chris, they too will test for their Black Belt in Korea and experience

taekwondo on a world stage. Look for these fundraisers in future Wesley Chapel Magazine “events” sections and please support them! spending time at Us tae Kwon do has become a “Family affair” for the Baluvelt’s. Now Bernadette, Mia and Joe join Chris and Zachery. Chris told me that he tells his kids that “This (tae Kwon do) is a gift that I give to you (my children)”. Closing, I want to share with you how Chris sees taekwondo; Writen by Yum Hong-chui, the honorary president of The World taekwondo Hanmadang 2013 in his welcoming address. “It is because tae kwon do

Nasal allergies called allergic rhinitis affects approximately 14% or about 40 million americans. affected individuals often have seasonal flares of allergies, called seasonal allergic rhinitis. symptoms include sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, and itchy-watery eyes. allergic rhinitis is more than just an annoyance, it also has real consequences. affected individuals have more difficulty concentrating, sleeping and may have more upper respiratory infections, such as sinusitis and otitis media. Nearly a quarter of affected individuals either miss school or work because of allergic rhinitis. an association of allergic rhinitis and shyness has also been found. Knowing this, what can be done? Correctly diagnosing allergic rhinitis can lead to effective therapy. The diagnosis of allergic rhinitis is best performed by a health care professional. The evaluation, a thorough history and physical exam, may also include allergy testing performed by a board certified allergist. allergy skin testing, is not only very accurate, but also immediately identifies specific allergens to which the affected individual is sensitive. This information

is very important to developing an allergen avoidance plan. allergen avoidance can be helpful for dust mites, animal dander, pollen (trees, grass, weeds), mold spore, and even cockroach. Medications are often needed because total allergen avoidance is not possible. effective medications include antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids and leukotriene blockers. simple measures, such as over-the-counter saline sprays, although not as effective, are safe and are somewhat relieving. antihistamines have been around since the 1940s. older antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl ®) are effective, but are sedating and may impair function, such as learning and driving. Newer antihistamines, such as allegra, astelin, Claritin, Clarinex, Zyrtec, are both effective and much less sedating. antihistamines generally work well within an hour, thus are very effective on an “as needed” basis. They are very effective in treating sneezing, itching and runny nose, however they usually don’t really relieve that stuffy nose (nasal congestion). Thus they are sometimes combined to certain decongestants, usually pseudoephedrine (generic for sudafed) to give more complete relief. Combination products such as allegra-d, Claritin-d, Clarinex-d and Zyrtec-d, contain both an antihistamine and an extended release pseudoephedrine. However decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine, may pose a problem for individuals with elevated blood pressure or enlarged prostates, by raising

blood pressure further or blocking urine flow. Intranasal corticosteroids (examples: Flonase, Nasacort aQ, Nasarel, Nasonex, and Rhinocort aQ) are nasal sprays that have an anti-inflammatory medicine similar to that found in hydrocortisone cream. This type of allergy treatment is the most effective type of medication to treat nasal allergies by not only relieving sneezing, itching and runny nose, but also by reducing stuffiness. However, they are not maximally beneficial until they are used regularly for weeks and may irritate or damage the nasal tissue resulting in nose bleeds. Thus, all of these intranasal corticosteroids are only given by prescription and the nose should be examined regularly by a health care professional. Leukotriene blockers, of which only one, singulair ®, has been approved to treat allergic rhinitis. singulair ® also is not as effective as intranasal corticosteroids. allergy immunotherapy (aKa allergy shots), is also known as an allergen vaccine. Unlike medications, it is the only Fda (U.s. Food and drug administration) approved allergy treatment that reduces allergy symptoms years after a full course of therapy has ended. When an allergic individual undergoes this therapy, he or she receives small, regular injections of increasing amounts of the allergen vaccine that is “tailor-made” based on specific allergen sensitivities (as found on that person’s allergy test). allergy immunotherapy results in a type of tolerance leading to less nasal allergies and has even been shown to reduce allergic asthma symptoms. It also reduces the need for medications and may also decrease the risk of forming new allergies and/or asthma.

to be considered for this type of therapy an individual should be allergic based on allergy testing. Potential candidates also have more significant allergies, examples include those that require medications most of the year, have not responded well to avoidance strategies and medications, have both allergic rhinitis and asthma, and/or wish to reduce their need for allergy medications. allergic rhinitis is not only extremely common but also takes away from our enjoyment of life. don’t let your allergies control you, take control of your allergies! dr. daniel Reichmuth is a graduate of Indiana Medical school and at the University of south Florida. What to doBedding Plants: even though temperatures are still warm, begin planting for the cooler months ahead. dianthus, petunia, and pansy are good annuals for the fall Bulbs: Plant agapanthus, rain lily, and many varieties of lily now for blooms nextspring or summer. add organic matter to the planting bed for best results. Herbs: a wide range of herbs can be planted from seeds or plants this month. some to try are parsley, cilantro, chives, garlic, and sage.

Vegetables: Plant crops now that will grow and produce throughout the wintermonths. This includes beet, Brussels sprout, carrot, and onion.

What to PlantLawn weeds: The best time to control winter weeds in lawns is before they appear. Pre-emergent herbicides must be applied when nighttime temps are 55°F-60°F for 4-5 days to be effective. Fertilize ornamental trees and shrubs: This is the last month of the year tofertilize plants that

aren’t performing as desired. Controlled-release fertilizer provides nutrients over a longer period of time. Fertilize Bahia and st. Augustine lawns: Choose a fertilizer (not a weed & feed) with little or no phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. a fertilizer with controlled-release nitrogen will give longer lasting results. This is the last fertilization for these lawn types for the year. Strawberries: Prepare beds and set strawberry plants this month. strawberries

Around the Yardalso make a colorful and tasty container planting. either way provide daily watering until plants are established. Winter landscapes: evergreen hollies and their bright berries add color to the landscape when other plants have died back for the winter. Water well when planting and mulch to minimize weeds. Irrigation of established Lawns and Landscaping: as of august 1, 2013, outdoor water use for irrigation of established lawns and landscaping is restricted to a maximum of two days per week according to a property’s address. Irrigation must be accomplished prior to 8:00 am or after 6:00 pm. any one zone of a property may only be watered once during the allowable day, Not both in the morning and evening. These rules apply to all sources of water including well water and surface water.

The schedule is:addresses ending in the number 0, 1, 2 or 3:

Mondays and/or Thursdays onlyaddresses ending in the number 4, 5, or 6:

tuesdays and/or Fridays onlyaddresses ending in the number 7, 8, or 9:

Wednesdays and/or saturdays onlyLocations with no address (common areas, entry areas)

New Lawns and Landscaping on days 1-30, beginning on the day of installation, new plant material including turf grass may be watered any day of the week. on days 31-60, new plant material including turf grass may be watered as follows: even-numbered addresses may water on tuesday, Thursday and sunday; odd-numbered addresses, locations with no address, and locations with mixed addresses may water on Monday, Wednesday and saturday. Following this period all new plant material is considered established and must follow the two day per week restrictions outlined above. all watering of new lawns and landscaping must take place before 8:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. nOTe: all new plant material (new or replacement turf grass or new plants/shrubs) must cover at least 50 percent of an irrigation zone in order to water with an in-ground sprinkler system during the establishment period. If not, the new plant material must be hand watered following the same time of day and day of week restrictions for new plant establishment. (example: If you purchased one flat of grass plugs to place throughout your front yard to fill in bare spots, this would not cover 50 percent of an irrigation zone. Hand watering would be required.) also, only those zones containing 50 percent new plant material may be watered, not the entire yard. (example: If you had your entire front yard re-sodded, but not your backyard, only those zones

covering the front yard could be run during the establishment period. The backyard zones would have to remain on the regular watering schedule. Most irrigation timers have an a & B program. Program a can be set for the regular watering. Program B can be programmed for multiple days to only water those zones containing the new plant material during the establishment period.)

Low Volume Irrigation Low volume irrigation is defined as a maximum of a half-gallon per minute (30 gallons per hour) per emitter. Low volume irrigation is not approved for lawns or turf grass. Low volume irrigation of plant materials other than lawns and grass is allowed any day, however, you must water before 8;00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. The use must not be wasteful and unnecessary.

Hand Watering Hand-watering and low-volume irrigation of plant material other than lawns or turf grass may be done on any day and at any time.

Chemical Treatment If chemicals such as pesticides, fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides are applied to your lawn or landscape plants by a certified professional applicator, they can be watered in according to manufacturer’s instructions within 24 hours of the chemical treatment, the evening of the application, or the morning afterward. applying water following a chemical treatment by a certified professional applicator is allowable on your non-designated watering day provided a dated chemical advisory marker showing the date of application is visible in the yard. all such watering must be prior to 8:00 am or after 6:00 pm. If you apply a chemical treatment to your lawn or landscape plants yourself, the watering in of those chemicals must be done on your designated watering day for your address prior to 8:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m.

Irrigation System Maintenance Irrigation systems may be operated during restricted hours for cleaning and maintenance purposes, but limited to 10 minutes per week. an attendant must remain visibly on site during the entire cleaning and maintenance operation.

INGREDIENTS1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker® oatmeal cookie mix1/2 cup firm butter or margarine2 packages (8 oz each) cream cheese, softened1/2 cup sugar2 tablespoons Gold Medal® all-purpose flour1 teaspoon vanilla1 egg1 can (21 oz) apple pie filling1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon1/4 cup chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONSHeat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom and sides of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray.

Place cookie mix in large bowl. With pastry blender or fork, cut in butter until mixture is crumbly and coarse. Reserve 1 1/2 cups crumb mixture; press remaining crumbs in bottom of pan. Bake 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, in large bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, flour, vanilla and egg with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth.

Spread cream cheese mixture evenly over partially baked crust. In medium bowl, mix pie filling and cinnamon. Spoon evenly over cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle reserved crumbs over top. Sprinkle with walnuts.

Bake 35 to 40 minutes longer or until light golden brown. Cool about 30 minutes. Refrigerate to chill, about 2 hours. For bars, cut into 6 rows by 4 rows. Store covered in refrigerator.

The GFWC New tampa Junior Woman’s Club is conducting a service project in support of days for Girls, a non-profit organization empowering girls and women worldwide through the distribution of menstrual management kits. across

the globe, many females are isolated during their menstrual cycle due to a lack of feminine products. They are barred from school and work for days each month, reducing their income and ability to pursue an

education with male peers. The solution exists primarily through the days for Girls kit - a drawstring bag containing underwear, a washcloth, soap, two Ziploc bags, and hand-sewn re-useable maxi pads. The New tampa Juniors have purchased enough supplies

to create 100 kits, and are now seeking individuals interested in sewing the most essential part – the re-useable liners and shields. Through postings on Facebook and sewing blogs, word has gotten out and

boxes of hand-sewn pads have been arriving at the home of Margaret andrade, the project chairperson. “It’s been exciting to see the response from people all across the nation, but we’re hoping to establish local support as well. It would be great to have more people from tampa

on board!” according to days for Girls, each kit lasts up to three years and provides eight months of living to its recipient. andrade states “It’s amazing to

think that just a few hours of sewing can literally change the life of someone on the other side of the world. I just can’t imagine living in a community where there’s no access to feminine hygiene products. I

hope our project will not only help those receiving our kits, but also raise awareness about this important issue.” The GWFC New tampa Junior Woman’s Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to community improvement through volunteer activities, fundraising events, and educational awareness. In 2012, they reported over 8,000 service hours and gave away more than $43,000 in cash and in-kind donations to charities nationwide. They are currently accepting new members.
