Improve your physical and mental health with this gentle walk around West Park Meadows. The nature reserve forms a major part of the Green Wedge into Derby City between Spondon and Chaddesden. Nature to be seen include (Wildlife to be seen will depending on seasons and weather) Birds: Yellowhammer, skylark, blue ts, robins, wrens. Trees and flowers: Ash, sycamore, oak, hawthorn, elder, red campion, knapweed, seleal, lords and ladies, wood avens and lesser celandine. Animals: Peacock buerflies, broad bodied chaser dragonflies, frogs, squirrels. 1. StartthewalkonWestRoad.Thereareanumberofpostsalongtheroutewhichcorrespondwiththenumbersonthemapabove.Whenyouenterintothereserveatpoint1,youwillseeopenfarlandtotheright.Listenhereforbirds,liketheyellowhammerandskylark.

2. Walkalongthetarmacfootpath.Thegrasslandtotheleftisnowmanagedasawildlifemeadowallowinginterestingspeciessuchasknapweed,yorkshirefog,selfhealandbushvetchtoflourish.Lookattheunevensurfacewhichshowstheremnantsoftheoldridgeandfurrowfarmingsystem,datingbacktoMedievaltimes.

3. Asyoucontinuealongthetarmacpathyouwillreachahedgerow.Beyonditbearslightlytotheleft,acrossopengrassland.Avoidtracksthroughdensebushes.Hereareoak,sycamore,englishelmandwychelm.Alsoseebusheslikehawthorn,blackthorn,brambleandrose.Thesearehometobirds,mammalsandinsects.

4. Continueon,bearingleftthroughbushes,untilyoureachanotheropenareaofgrassland.Thishasbentgrass,spearthistleandmeadowbuttercup.

5. Continueonuntilyoureachabeltoflargetrees.Justbeforeenteringthiswoodland,lookacrosstotheright.HereonthesouthernedgeofthereserveseethefantasticviewoftheRiverDerwentValley.

6. Followthepathintothewood,keepingtoyourright.ThisstripofwoodlandcontainsmanylargeoaktreesandafewAshandSycamore.Oaksprovidefoodandsheltertomanybirdsandinsects.Youmayseesquirrelsandbluetitsinthetrees.Looktothegroundandseebrambleandivy.Keepyoureyeoutforpinkcampion.

7. Continueontothepond,whichhasbeenheresinceMedievaltimesandwasdredgedandrestoredin1995.Approachitquietlyandslowly,lookingoutfor

wildlifesuchasfrogs,andinthesummeryoumayseedragonflies.Becarefulnearthewater.

Walkaroundthepond,thenturnleftalongtheEasternedgeofthereserve,closetotheschoolplayingfieldsandtowardsthewoodlandinthecentre.Thiswoodhasagoodmixoftrees,ahealthyshrubandgroundcover.Itprovidesavarietyofhabitatsforbirdssuchasbluetits,robinsandwrens.Shrublayerincludeshawthornandelderandgroundfloraincludesbramble,lordsandladies,woodavensandlessercelandine.
