A few words from the Newsletter Editor Hello, I am Holly Buykx, the D73 Newsletter Editor for 2018/2019. I've been a Toastmaster since 2011 and moved from Perth (District 17) to Melbourne last year. Myhome club is now Ivanhoe Toastmasters. The D73 newsletter will be published monthly, and you are welcome to contribute an article. If you'd like to submit news or share significant happenings at your club or in your area, please sendthem to me by email by the second Tuesday of the month.

From the Immediate Past District Director

District 73 – 2017/2018 Distinguished Club Program PerformanceHello fellow Toastmasters! What an amazing year was the 2017-2018 Toastmasters year. We beganwith a bang. We achieved many successes which don’t show on the Distinguished Club Program(DCP) Performance. To achieve a level in the DCP the District has to obtain that level or higher foreach of the three goals 1) Paid Clubs 2) Payments and 3) Distinguished Clubs. Our District did notachieve Distinguished in 2017-2018 (http://dashboards.toastmasters.org/):

What does it all mean?!!!! Our end of year DCP District 73 Performance above shows that we had 0%Growth for Paid Clubs. On appearance this would suggest that we had no new clubs for the year. Yetin fact we welcomed 14 new clubs! You probably have guessed and yes, we also sadly said goodbyeto 14 established clubs as they closed their doors for the last time. If we had not lost the 14 establishedclubs then our District would have been President’s Distinguished in Paid Clubs. In the 2018-2019 Toastmaster year our District is aiming for President’s Distinguished which meansthat we need to add 13 new clubs – one less than last year. If we ensure that our struggling clubs aremaintained and looked after we can do this. If you are worried about your club, please reach out toyour Area Director in the first instance to ensure that the District will get on board to give your club allthe assistance it needs. If you are interested in opening a new club, whether at your work or a venue of your choice, pleasecontact Club Growth Director, Vicki Travers. If you are part of a large club, consider creating a sisterclub that meets on the alternative week at the same time where you can have a joint meeting on thefifth week when one occurs.

Paid Clubs is only one of the three elements measured in the DCP. As you can see our District was sixpayments short of Distinguished. Again, if the District had not lost the 14 established clubs, thepayments would have come close to achieving President’s Distinguished. Payments are the fees eachmember pays and is counted as one payment for each six-monthly payment. Distinguished Clubs is the performance that District 73 always achieves well. Our District was one clubaway from achieving President’s Distinguished. Well done District 73! In the 2018-2019 Toastmasteryear, let’s make sure we achieve that extra club becoming President’s Distinguished. If your club wasshort of achieving at least Distinguished in the 2017-2018 year, please reach out to your Area Directorto ensure that the District can help your club to achieve at least Distinguished in the 2018-2019 year.Remember, if our members are achieving, then our clubs are achieving, and this will extend to theDistrict’s performance. Let us make the 2018-2019 Toastmaster year, one to remember. We don’t want to just start witha bang, we want to finish in style and go out on a high! Divisions to Distinguished. District 73 President Distinguished 2018-19 all starts with you. I began my Toastmasters experience on the 1st July 2006 and it took me about two years tounderstand the whole package, as there is SO much more to Toastmasters than just turning up at yourclub and giving a speech. Being a member of Toastmasters can be life changing. Opportunitiespresent to us to build our self-confidence, to push beyond that inner fear of failure, that fear ofspeaking in front of the audience. With every meeting we attend we are growing and learning. I’d liketo suggest to you, to set yourself a goal or two for this Toastmasters year, and share these goals withyour club, as your personal achievements are the cornerstone to your club’s success. Members achieving together -that is our District 73. Enjoy every moment. There are resources galore on the Toastmasters International website and on our District 73 website. https://www.toastmasters.org/resources/resource-library https://d73.toastmasters.org.au/

Pathways Educational Goals under the Distinguished Club Program (DCP)

By Kwan Liong Ng on behalf of Yakety Yaks Advanced Toastmasters Club The Distinguished Club Program is made up of four areas: education, training, membership andpayments/administration. This article clarifies how DCP educational and training goals are achieved inPathways , and how they compare to the traditional education program. As members we achieve earlier recognition in Pathways than in the traditional program, as Level 1 isawarded after the completion of 3 projects which consists of 4 speeches and an evaluation. If 4 members commence Pathways in a particular club and complete Levels 1 and 2 during the year, the club would earn 3 goals. If 4 other goals have been achieved in membership, training andadministration as well , this will make the club a Distinguished Club, with the achievement of 7 goals, provided they have 20 members. For the training goal, a minimum of four club officers are trainedduring each of the two training periods (Club Officer Training, COT). A direct comparison cannot be made between both programs as they differ in structure. It is important

to note that unlike the traditional program where the Communication and Leadership tracks areseparate, Pathways has integrated these together. ,.Both education programs have goals for earlyachievement (level 1 & 2, CC) and higher (level 3 & 4, ACB etc). This also emphasises the need formembership retention in order to achieve further awards. Planning is required in order to ensure the continuous submission of educational awards in Pathways,as members progress through their paths. Distinguished Club Program (DCP) Education Goals : Current Program vs. Pathways. Taken from 1111 Distinguished Club Program and Club Success Plan https://www.toastmasters.org/DCP

Clubs may obtain a maximum of 6 out of the 12 goals listed above in the year to count towards theirDCP. However, a club may only receive credit for one type of educational award per member in a givenyear. An individual can earn multiple awards of the same type, but only one can count towards eachclub they are a member of. This can be an incentive to join a second club! For example: Alex has embarked on Pathways and achieved Level 1. He credits this to Club A, whichcounts it towards their DCP goals. Alex continues to work on this Pathway, and also starts a secondPathway. He achieves Level 1. Question: If he gives this to Club A, will it count towards the club DCP? Answer: No. Alex will earn the credit, but club A will not be able to count this towards their DCP goalsas Alex has already submitted a Level 1 to the club. If Alex joins a second club, Club B, he can submit the second Level 1 to Club B, where it will counttowards the club DCP goals. Thanks for reading and I hope you have gained some valuable insights pertaining to PathwaysEducational Goals! Yakety Yaks is an advanced Toastmasters club that meets on the second Thursday of the month at theMulticultural Hub, Elizabeth St, Melbourne. Membership requirements are at least a CC, or a Level 3 inPathways. If you would like to visit us and see what we are all about, please do contact us or visit our Easy-speakpage. Return to the Top

Bayside Toastmasters Celebrate 900th Meeting

Monday evening 18th June 2018 marked a very special milestone for the Bayside Toastmasters. Aslightly larger group gathered in the foyer before this meeting, members hugged, mingled and no doubtdiscussed the rapid onset of the infamous Melbourne winter. There was clearly a heightened level ofexcitement amongst the group on the evening. You could probably guess cake was to be served. During the halfway break in the meeting, over some cake and warm cups of tea, we gathered andtoasted to the 900th gathering of the Bayside Toastmasters! This was a very impressive milestone forthe club, and it was an absolute privilege to take part; with new members and old, it was great tocelebrate and feel a part of such rich history. After the formalities, we enjoyed five wonderful speeches. There was a crowd favourite and clear winner of Best Speaker Award for our illustrious, immediatepast President John Turner, with his speech "DAWN" – a very powerful and touching eulogy to his latefather. It was a speech that will stay with everyone who witnessed it. So onward we march into the new Toastmaster year, with excitement, enthusiasm and a drive tobecome better speakers, better communicators and better people. Wishing you all the best in yourtoastmaster journey, from the Bayside Toastmasters. Bayside Toastmasters club chartered on 1 July 1976; Club 163. The club meets 2nd and 4th Mondays at Hampton Bowls Club. If you would like to visit us, please contact us or visit our easy-speak page.
