Chicago Virtual Screening Event

by Robyn O’Donnell DTM, Logistics Manager D73, on behalf of SilverService Toastmasters There is nothing like the buzz of an International Convention, with one of thehighlights being the World Championship of Public Speaking. I attended theconvention in Kuala Lumpur in 2014, and it was amazing to be in the audience

watching the contest finals. Since then, I have been passionate about watching the contests by virtualscreening – still being a part of the action and the worldwide audience, andsharing that with fellow Toastmasters where possible. This year, with the support of the District and my club – Silver ServiceToastmasters, we hosted a viewing party at the Buckingham International. Anumber of us gathered over an afternoon tea and watched a delayed screeningof the contests on a large projector screen. My aim was for it to be botheducational and fun, and to enjoy the ambience of an audience to watch thecontests albeit miles from Chicago.

We started the day with the viewing of Ben’s speech in his semi-final. Congratulations Ben on representing District 73, and wonderful to see him onthe big screen. Convention table topics were a fun addition to the programmewhile we set up for the main event of the contest finals. Watching the contestants deliver their speeches we were all in audience mode-clapping and cheering them on just like we were in Chicago. The result wasexciting, and fortunately kept a surprise by those in the room already aware ofthe results. It was wonderful to host this at our club venue, where we hold our dinnermeeting each month. The assistance from the staff at the Buckingham, plususe of the professional facilities and equipment helped with making this eventto be successful.

Thanks to the District for providing and virtual screening ticket andsupporting the event. It was wonderful to share this with Toastmasters from around the District –some travelled from as far as Geelong, and elsewhere, as well as six of ourown club members attending. Pathways Educational Goals under theDistinguished Club Program (DCP)

By Kwan Liong Ng on behalf of Yakety Yaks Advanced Toastmasters Club The Evaluation and Feedback Project in Level 1 requires members to complete 2 prepared speechesand 1 evaluation speech. As this sometimes leads to some confusion, I have prepared a list ofcommon asked questions pertaining to this speech project. Q: Does this project require a specific type of speech (Eg: A personal story, or an informative speech)? A: No. Members are free to speak about any topic, and there are no restrictions what type of speech itshould be. Q: Do members need to repeat the same speech in the second speech? A: No. Members are given the choice to incorporate the feedback received after delivering the firstspeech to either deliver the same speech, or create and deliver a new speech. Q: Is it true that both prepared speeches need to be evaluated by the same evaluator? A: No. The project states that if the same evaluator is unavailable, then the speaker is required toshare his or her feedback with the second evaluator. This allows the second evaluator to providefeedback based on the feedback from the first evaluator. Q: Can the tasks be done out of order, eg: Can the evaluation speech can be done in between the twoassigned speeches? A: Tasks should be done in order, as is stated in the overview of this project. Q: Must this project be done directly after the Ice-Breaker?

A: No. Members have the choice of doing either this project, or the Researching and PresentingProject directly after the Ice-Breaker. Q: Does this project require an oral evaluation of the speech evaluation? A: This is not required, as the evaluation form of the speech evaluation mentions a verbal evaluation. However, in this case the general evaluator can evaluate the speech evaluator. I hope that some of the answers above clears up some questions that you may have about this project. After the completion of this project, you will be one step closer to achieving your Level 1! Yakety Yaks is an advanced Toastmasters club that meets on the second Thursday of the month at theMulticultural Hub, Elizabeth St, Melbourne. Membership requirements are at least a CC, or a Level 3 inPathways. If you would like to visit us and see what we are all about, please contact us or visit us on Easy-speak.

Blast Off with a Launch Meeting

Submitted by Karl Hughes D73 Education and Training Coordinator (VIC/TAS) A Launch Meeting is a meeting that reflects the structure and feel of a regular Toastmasters meetingwith the aim of starting a new club or signing on new members to an area/division. The term that was used previously was Demonstration Meeting. We are changing the language toLaunch Meeting because of a different emphasis being placed on the meeting. Growth is an essentialelement of life, be it an individual, business or organisation. If an entity is not refreshing and growing, itis going backwards. We want to make sure that Toastmasters District 73 continues to be a vibrant, exciting, learning environment that helps people become better communicators and leaders. Rather than run a Demonstration Meeting, that may then take a year for the club to get up and running.Let's ensure we are doing the right actions to create a viable club that can be launched quickly. Growthneeds to be sustainable and we need a good foundation for a club that will continue to be healthy intothe future. In the District 73 Leadership Forum on 9th September 2018, a workshop was conducted with DistrictDirectors, Division Directors, Area Directors and club members. The result was the creation of aLaunch Meeting Framework and lots of ideas on how to go about successfully promoting and runninga Launch Meeting. Everyone can contribute to a Launch Meeting, whether it be helping with promotional activities or beingpart of the meeting itself. To find out more about the Launch Meeting Framework and how you canhelp, go to the D73 website.
