A Christmas

Message from the District Director

As the festive season is upon us and

2017 draws to a close, let’s reflect on

the amazing half year that District 73

has seen over the last six months.

Since July we have chartered eight

new clubs! Woohoo! Although, we

have lost a few clubs, and some are

currently suspended, it leaves us in a

strong position with 161 clubs. This is

an increase of four clubs for this

toastmasters year.

We have all been a part of history with

the dawn of a new era where we

welcomed Pathways, our new

education system. Pathways rolled out

in our Region 12 on 6 December 2017.

Although Pathways introduced change,

our club meetings will remain the

same. They will still be the fun,

supportive environments we have

come to know and love.

Join your fellow toastmasters in embracing Pathways yet don’t forget to complete awards in the

traditional education program which will still count towards personal and club goals until June

2020.

I look forward to a rewarding 2018 full of promise and challenges with the second round of Club

Officer Training, the Division Contests, our District 73 Annual Convention in Hobart and of course,

the District Council Meeting held at that event. District 73 rocks!

I would like to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a prosperous and Happy New

Year.

Workshop Presenters

Have you ever dreamt of teaching your hard-earned skills in front of an

audience?

Well, now’s your chance. Our next annual convention is being held in Hobart on the

weekend of the 19th of May, 2018, and workshop presenters are being sought. You

might have a special skill or ability that you want to share with the world. Maybe you

have years of experience in a particular method of communicating. Or possibly you’re

an expert in some kind of modern technology.

If so, our convention committee wants to hear from you. This is a great opportunity to

present in front of a larger audience, and deliver a completely different style of

presentation.

Applications for Workshop Presenters for Convention close on 1st January 2018, see

http://www.d73annualconvention.org.au/workshops for details on how to apply

Pathways Café

It's quite nice to have the December/January break to become acquainted with our

new learning experience. I find myself with a cuppa and navigating my way around

Base Camp, becoming absorbed in the Tutorials and Resources, and spending quite

some time giving badges and feedback to my fellow club members!

As we transition to Pathways, its important we keep the main thing, the main thing –

Club meetings continue being vibrant and energised, ensuring all members have an

opportunity to contribute in both the legacy education module and embark on the

Pathways learning experience.

Page 5: Welcome to the D73 Southern Cross - Toastmasters … · Welcome to the D73 Southern Cross ... Although Pathways introduced change, our club meetings will remain the ... Award Toastmaster

As we welcome Guests, we could reconsider the material provided to them,

as we should incorporate information on Pathways.

I was chatting with Kim Hahn, Bass Division Director on Sunday morning about this,

and what do you know, Kim has whipped up a revised guest information document to

include Pathways of which an extract is below;

Pathways – the Toastmasters Educational Program

Pathways is a self-paced training program to help members achieve their individual

communication and leadership goals. Every member chooses a ‘path’ that best fits

their individual goals. The learning experience includes delivering speeches, online

tutorials and resources as well as feedback and mentoring from other club

members. The 10 paths available are show below

Page 6: Welcome to the D73 Southern Cross - Toastmasters … · Welcome to the D73 Southern Cross ... Although Pathways introduced change, our club meetings will remain the ... Award Toastmaster

Upon joining, your first path is free and includes a questionnaire to assist with

finding the best path for you. As this is a self-paced program, we estimate that

your first path may take you from 6 months to 2 years. Thereafter, each path is

$20 USD.

Each path has 5 levels and involves 2-3 projects. Distinguished Toastmaster is

the highest achievement within Toastmasters and involves the completion of 2

paths as well as fulfilling leadership roles.

For more information: https://www.toastmasters.org/pathways-overview

Of course, the above is just an example. Your club will need to review and

update the information provided to a guest, and also reconsider the new

member welcome pack.

Continue to welcome guests to our club experience, having fun meetings and

providing valuable feedback, as the club meeting remains unchanged. In fact,

our meetings could become more vibrant and exciting.

The sample guest booklet will be available on the District website.

Enjoy your Pathways learning experience and look forward to seeing you at 2nd

round Club Leadership training in the New Year.

Contests

Congratulations to those members who are through to the Division Contest. What an

achievement. For some, this is a first, whilst for others this could be an ongoing

quest. The best thing about contests is to witness the achievement of the member,

pushing himself or herself outside their comfort zone, being vulnerable as they

Page 7: Welcome to the D73 Southern Cross - Toastmasters … · Welcome to the D73 Southern Cross ... Although Pathways introduced change, our club meetings will remain the ... Award Toastmaster

represent their club and are speaking outside of that familiar club environment. Even

better, when the club members turn up to support and cheer on their comrade,

creating an atmosphere and an audience. Now that is a contest.

We have Division contests coming up in the new year – now here is my challenge to

you all – let’s have standing room only at the Division contests! Show up and support

your club. Volunteer to be a timer, counter, usher, or if you qualify, a judge for the

Division contest.

Which leads to the Toastmasters International Speech Contest Rule book 2017/18.

It is vitally important that Contestants are aware of the rules. In particular about originality;

This contest season, some of us have experienced a ‘protest’ that may have resulted

in a disqualification of a contestant. If only they’d been aware of the rules!

Page 8: Welcome to the D73 Southern Cross - Toastmasters … · Welcome to the D73 Southern Cross ... Although Pathways introduced change, our club meetings will remain the ... Award Toastmaster

Please review the Contest rulebook which you can locate on the District 73 website

and at Toastmasters.org.

There is even a Contestant Checklist on page 23 of the rulebook.

Division Contests are being held on ;

Bass Division 4th Sat in March

Central Division 3rd Sat in March

Eastern Division 3rd Sat in Feb

Inner City Division 1st Sat in March

Metro Division 1st Sat in March

Northern Division 2nd Sat in Feb

Ranges Division 4th Sun in March

Southern Division 4th Sunday in Feb

Let’s have so much support for our amazing District 73 contestants that each and

every one of them feels like a champion!
