A lot of milestones can refl ect a great career.

Premierships, leading goalkicker prizes, Sandover medals and State guernseys can all be brought out of old suitcases for past greats to recall their wonderful playing days.

However, all the above trophies reflect success. For some, their greatest achievement in the game is their longevity.

The process of turning up each week, taking the hits, completing all those pre-season drills and enduring the countless ice baths over more than a decade in the game must also be recognised.

The WA 200 Club has regained some lost lustre in recent seasons.

It is one of the most difficult groups in which to gain membership. To get a pass a player would have had to play at least 10 seasons. That’s a lot of laps around the oval.

To be eligible the WA-produced talent must have notched the double century of matches via fixtures in the WAFL, AFL or VFL. Games coached at those senior levels are also taken into account.

A batch of players, a player-coach and an umpire were recently inducted into the WA 200 Club.

The Football Budget casts its eye in the latest group, listed by their WAFL club of origin.

The pack is chasing a Shark but whether the school of WAFL rivals can catch East Fremantle’s Ryan Lester-Smith won’t be known until next month.

When voting for the 2013 WAFL Combined Past Players and Officials Rising Star award went in-camera three weeks ago week, Lester-Smith held a comfortable lead in the prize.

However, Lester-Smith won’t add to his tally this season after going down with a serious knee injury.

Claremont’s Mat thew Davies and Sam Fong were launching a late challenge to Lester-Smith’s dominance.

To be eligible players must have notched eight games or less at the start of the 2013 season and be aged 21 years or under at the end of the season.

Votes do not need to be awarded.

Player of the Year

There has been movement at the top of the leaderboard for one of the WAFL’s major player prizes.

But just who has done what remains as mystery as voting for the 2013 Osborne Park Volkswagen WAFL Player of the Year award has gone in-camera.

At the time of the secret judging four players – Claremont pair Andrew Foster and Jake Murphy plus East Perth teammates Paul Johnson and Brendan Lee – shared the lead in the award.

The winner of the Osborne Park Volkswagen WAFL Player of the Year award receives a prize to the value of $1500.

goalkicker award.

Brennan Stack of Perth (47 goals) and Tim Geappen from Swan Districts (46) won’t be able to catch Smith in the last round.

If Smith can hold on to his lead he will become the first East Perth player to claim the Bernie Naylor Medal since Troy Wilson in 2006.

From Richard Curtis, the writer of Notting Hill, Love Actually, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Four Weddings and a Funeral, comes this funny, tender, poignant love story that celebrates life and family.

The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim’s father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can’t change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life—so he decides to make his world a better

place...by getting a girlfriend.

Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as you might think.

Rachel McAdams, the UK’s newest leading man Domhnall Gleeson, Bill Nighy and Australia’s Margot Robbie star in this romantic comedy that will have you once again laughing at our ever-so-human foibles and to share a tear at the extraordinary journeys that accompany our ordinary lives.

Opens in cinemas on October 17.

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds headline the 3D supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. as two cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of souls who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.

Veteran sheriff Roy Pulsifer (Bridges) has spent his career with the legendary police force known as R.I.P.D. tracking monstrous spirits who are cleverly disguised as ordinary people. His mission? To arrest and bring to justice a special brand of criminals trying to escape final judgment by hiding among the unsuspecting on Earth.

Once the wise-cracking Roy is assigned former rising-star detective Nick Walker (Reynolds) as his junior officer, the new partners have to turn grudging respect into top-notch teamwork. When they uncover a plot that could end life as we know it, two of R.I.P.D.’s finest must miraculously restore the cosmic balance...or watch the tunnel to the afterlife begin sending angry souls the very wrong way.

R.I.P.D. is directed by Robert Schwentke (Red) and produced by Neal H. Moritz (Fast & Furious series, I Am Legend), Mike Richardson (Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army) and Michael Fottrell (Fast & Furious series, Live Free or Die Hard).

Opens in cinemas on September 12.

9COLLECTABLESby Sean Cowan

During 2013, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Something that I have often recommended to people who are looking to start a WAFL collection is the old fixture card.

These days, nobody seems to issue fixture cards. But I certainly remember the days when you would get a WAFL fixture card with your newspaper, your fish & chips and even with a pint.

Some of the cards are a bit boring and did no more than list the fixtures. But others provided a great deal of extra information about the WAFL season and the history of the game.

Some of them were quite innovative, including sliding inserts or fold-over parts, and the best ones were often made by cigarette manufacturers and the breweries.

But perhaps the best thing about collecting fixture cards is that they don’t tend to cost a lot.

Just a few dollars will usually secure any fixture card from the 1970s or 1980s.

And, if you are prepared to look around, I wouldn’t mind betting you could build a reasonable collection very quickly.

The real challenge, however, comes when looking for those older cards. I find it strange that in all my years of collecting I have never seen a WAFL fixture card from the 1950s or earlier.

Certainly, I have seen plenty for the VFL and VFL that date back to the 1920s, but the earliest WAFL card I have seen is from 1960. They must surely have been made earlier than

Old cards could be the new game

1960. So, what happened to them all?

Does anyone have anything older? I would be happy to feature any older fixture cards in this column during the finals series.

And, in the meantime, if you are a budding WAFL collector, then perhaps you might like to keep an eye out for a few WAFL fixture cards.

Finally, some reports on the sales of the past week.

Perhaps the most interesting was another group of 1970s and 80s WAFL jumpers, which were sold by an eastern States dealer.

The dealer claimed to have bought them from a collector some years ago, along with a stack of SANFL and VFL jumpers.

The Subiaco, Swan Districts and South Fremantle jumper sold for $200 apiece, while Les Fong’s 1985 West Perth jumper fetched $405.

Another copy of Football – The Australian Game, by former East Perth rover Seff Parry, sold for just under $30, while an invitation to East Perth’s 1969 annual wind-up sold for just over $20.

And a Peter’s Ice Cream tin, featuring the blue-and-black East Perth lid, sold privately for $150 in only average condition.

Perhaps most interesting of all, though, was the appearance on the market of what appears to be a genuine 1960s Swan Districts jumper. The auction reserve was set at $790 and there were two bids placed very quickly.

I will be very interested to see what price it fetches and should be able to report the final result next week.

Banks might not be the most popular of public institutions, but some of them have produced some great WAFL collectables over the years.

The one that always sticks out in my mind is the set of money boxes issued by the Bank of New South Wales sometime in the 1960s.

I had seen the East Fremantle and Perth versions previously, but was recently shown the East Perth version. If anyone can help with photographs of any of the other five, I would love to hear from you.

A little more recently, though, Town & Country partnered with the WAFL to brand its savings books (remember those?) with WAFL club logos.

And your club also received some money from Town & Country when you opened an account with the club’s logo on it.

Given that very few people keep their bank books, I wonder how many of these still exist?

Ray showed me his son’s South Fremantle book recently, but I must admit it was the first I had ever seen.

GAME PREVIEWS

EAST FREM V CLAREMONT

East Fremantle Oval

With a higher percentage than half the top four, East Fremantle has one more hurdle to clear to sneak into the semi-finals.

The only problem is the obstacle is the dual defending premier and the top team again so far in 2013.

For the Sharks to play finals, they will not only need to beat Claremont at home but will need either Swans or East Perth to stumble this week.

In their only other meeting this year, the Tigers took advantage of a six-goal third quarter and their ability to force attacking errors and inaccuracies to narrowly edge out the Sharks in Kununurra.

While Fraser McDougall could have his hands full with Mark Seaby or Mitch Andrews in the ruck, the Tigers will need to be able to clear the centre square quickly to keep the ball away from the Sharks’ talented midfield.

This game - and the Sharks’ finals hopes - could come down to whether Luke Blackwell and his teammates can stay consistent through the middle without captain Andrew Browne, or if Rory O’Brien and Mark McGough can anchor the Sharks’ midfield and control the pace of the game.

Blackwell is set to play his 100th WAFL game while Bradd Dalziell could play his 50th game for the Sharks.

SWAN DISTRICTS V WEST PERTH

Steel Blue Oval

While Swan Districts now sits third, it will still need a win over West Perth in a potential preliminary finals preview to secure its place in next week’s semi-finals.

But the onus is also on the Falcons, who will need to be able to contain the Swans’ forward line to ensure they hit the finals in good form.

With Tim Geappen, Ryan Davis and the Swans’ adaptable forwards, the Swans will be able to manoeuvre efficiently across their front line and give the Falcons a range of targets to worry about.

Earlier this season the Falcons overcame poor kicking with solid defence and edged out a three-point win in Bassendean.

The Swans will look to keep Andrew Strijk, Josh Mellington and Aaron Black from moving freely through the centre corridor and limit the Falcons’ attacking flow.

And following their loss to East Fremantle last round West Perth coach Bill Mildenhall is expected to crack the whip this week.

Marc Crisp is set to play his 50th game as a Falcon.

Overall: Swan Districts 82 West Perth 141 Draw 2

PERTH V SOUTH FREMANTLE

Brownes Stadium

After what started as a promising season, Perth has one last chance to end its year on a high at home - though South Fremantle won’t be easy to beat.

The Bulldogs have now won four of their last five pulling themselves into seventh, and despite two close losses to the Demons earlier this season, the port club will be confident in ending their season with four straight wins.

The Demons will need to start strongly, score early and build momentum to avoid letting the Bulldogs set the pace.

Though the Demons have been able to rely on Brennan Stack, Dene White and Julian Jacobs to drive their attack, they will need to be able to hold up defensively to keep the game from turning into a shootout.

South Fremantle have enjoyed the increased development of several players, including Adam McIntosh, and that band will be keen to have one last crack for the season.

The Bulldogs may be able to assert themselves on the game early through the work of Sean Tighe up against Demon Mitch Leyendekkers in the ruck, with both players able to produce influential games to create chances through the centre of the ground.

Nick Kane could line up for his 50th game with the Demons.

Overall: Perth 151 South Fremantle 177

EAST PERTH V SUBIACO

Medibank Stadium

East Perth must win against its home ground rivals in order to stay in the finals race, though Subiaco could put up a tough fight in its last game of the year.

The Royals have an 8-2 record at Medibank Stadium in 2013, while the Lions have won just three times at home this year and will miss the finals for the fourth straight season after losing to South Fremantle in the 2009 premiership decider.

With the regular season series split between the two, the Royals won comfortably three weeks ago on the back of a career-best performance from Mat Seal, on target kicking and the strong ruck combination of Paul Johnson and Brock Higgins.

The Lions will have to be able to shut down Johnson and the rest of the Royals’ mobile forwards in order to keep the score from blowing out.

While defensively the Lions will have their hands full and that’s where players such as Daniel Leishman come in, they will still need their midfield to

work hard in moving the ball quickly up the

ground and into the gaps they can create in the Royals’ back line.

Aaron Sweet could play his 100th

game for the Royals.

Swan Districts women claim premiership double

WAFC

Swan Districts capped off a historic year for women’s football by winning both the reserves and league grand fi nals last weekend for the fi rst time for the club.

Lead by No.3 pick in the AFL Women’s Draft, Chelsea Randall, Swans overcame a 15-point deficit midway through the final quarter to storm home over reigning league premiers, Coastal Titans.

The Titans were slow out of the blocks as Swans dominated the opening stages of the first quarter, kicking the first of the match through Fiona Boucher before the Titans had a chance to go forward.

But they soon settled, however, and Jodie White’s perfectly weighted pass to Aimee Schmidt inside 50 gave the Titans a one-point lead heading into the first change.

Play opened up in the second quarter after Trisha Ramsay slotted the Titans second within a minute of play resuming.

Rikki Ryder immediately responded for Swans before Renee Forth provided one of the highlights of the day, taking a courageous mark and calmly kicking the goal to showcase why she, too, was selected by Melbourne in the AFL Women’s draft.

Not to be outdone, Shelley Matcham, who had been providing run and spark for much of the opening quarter broke two tackles and snapped from 30 metres out to keep Swans right in the contest at the main break.

It was a tale of what could have been for the Titans, who dominated for the majority of the third quarter but only managed to kick three points from a number of chances. Kellie Gibson

threatened to make them pay when she had a shot in the final minute of the quarter, but she too missed, leaving the Coastal Titans three-points up with only a quarter remaining.

A tight, physical opening to the final quarter saw both teams deadlocked until Jodie White kicked the Titans fifth to give them what seemed to be an insurmountable lead with only 15 minutes to play.

However, as they did for most of the day, Swans refused to lie down. Savanna Schimmel capped off a fabulous passage of play to kick her first for the match, and when the No.5 pick in the AFL Draft, Kara Donnellan, helped score Swans their fifth goal through relentless pressure it was game on at Brownes Stadium.

After leading all day, the Titans suddenly looked tired and when Ashley Sharp dribbled through her first for the game the Swans hit the front for the first time since the opening quarter.

`The Titans refused to lie down and came within meters of stealing the win, but a Randall defensive mark deep into the final minute put an end to the hopes of the Titans quest for back-to-back flags.

Swan Districts player Kellie Gibson was awarded best on ground and received the Lou Knitter medallion as voted by the umpires.

The win was the second of its kind for the day for the Swans, who took out the reserves premiership earlier in the day in emphatic style.

After a tight first half the Swans lead was only a straight kick, but a goal to Emily Stott that was quickly followed by another Swans goal opened up a 16-point lead at the final break in a low scoring game.

Charlene Headland crumbed the first goal of the final quarter and when Rikki Ryder kicked the next, the ‘Swannies’ chant rung around the stands as the crowd began to realise it would be virtually impossible for the Titans to come back.

With only seconds to go the players on the bench began to celebrate the first Grand Final win in the club’s history. Headland gave them more reason to celebrate as she put through her second for the quarter moments before the siren sounded to crown Swans champions.

Despite the loss, Titans’ Jay Hockley was recognised by the umpires for her courage and skill and awarded the medal for best on ground.

Swan Districts celebrate after winning the League grand fi nal.

KRIS MILLERSOUTH FREMANTLE Kris Miller has earned $250 for Railways Junior Football Club as part of AAMI’s grassroots reward program. Miller was named one of the best on ground for South Fremantle last week with 19 disposals and 5 goals to claim the AAMI WAFL Player of the Week Award. Miller also claims a $250 prize and is in contention to win the overall $5000 AAMI WAFL Player of the Year Award.

Todd Keating will umpire his 246th and fi nal game of league football when he offi ciates today’s clash between East Fremantle and Claremont.

Keating commenced his football playing in the East Fremantle District and was a prominent young footballer prior to taking up the whistle under the guidance of Don Jensen.

WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair said it was fitting Keating would umpire his final game at Shark Park where it all started for him in the mid-90s.

Keating joined the WAFL in 1999 and made his league debut when Subiaco played Perth in 2000.

He has been an outstanding umpire who has featured in 40 AFL games and three WAFL league

grand finals.

Keating paid tribute to Sinclair saying it was great he’d allowed him to combine umpiring and other interests in his final season.

“Darryl has always had my interests at heart and has really helped me along the way both on and off the field,” Keating said.

Keating was also appreciative of his first coach Greg Scroop, saying he made a big difference and was responsible for his quick rise to WAFL ranks.

“With Scroopy, similar to Sincs, there’s no half measures. You’re either in or out when you first start at the WAFL,” he said.

Keating will now concentrate on triathlons, spending time in his renovated house but more importantly spending time with his wife Jacky, who is expecting their first child later this year.

Take a bow Todd Keating.

Field umpire Matt Dodgson made his WAFL League debut in the round 22 game between Claremont and Swan Districts at Claremont Oval.

Dodgson was not initially appointed to this game, but received his opportunity when Justin Orr withdrew due to AFL commitments.

As a result, Dodgson was appointed to umpire in his place after stringing together a number of great performances in the reserves competition.

His debut was a great reward for perseverance after he joined the panel in 2007 but he had several years ruined by injury or illness.

“I had a pretty frustrating start to my time on the panel, as in my second and third years I suffered from a respiratory problem that prevented me from reaching any of the fitness benchmarks,” Dodgson said.

“As well as this, I did the ligaments in my ankle a couple of years ago and that set me back for close to 12 months because of the timing of the injury.”

However, Dodgson had plenty of support in his efforts to overcome his illness and injury setbacks.

“Being around all the boys and girls at training with the positive atmosphere and the team environment really helped me to maintain a positive attitude through any tough times that I was having,” he said.

Dodgson was thrown straight into the deep end on his debut, umpiring a clash between two of this season’s premiership contenders.

“The speed of the game felt four or five times faster than reserves, the skill level was a lot higher, and while it was a lot more physically

challenging to umpire, it was also much more enjoyable to umpire than reserves football,” he said.

One of the highlights of Dodgson’s debut was the umpiring team of which he was a part.

“It was really good to umpire with Scott McPhee and Rob McCaw, as Scott used to coach me at juniors and I’ve known Rob since I started umpiring at the age of 12,” he said.

WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair said Dodgson took to umpiring league football like a duck to water and possessed three special qualities - composure, perseverance and loyality.

Kojonup caused a major upset by beating top side Manjimup Tigers by 17 points and go into this week’s Lower South West Football League fi rst semi-fi nal full of confi dence.

Dennis Colbung showed impressive form to be named best while Dion Woods, Baydon Ried and Sam Marinoni (three goals) added solid support. Tigers best was Nathan Skraha and Brett Fraser while Lyndon Muir’s five goals took his season tally to 76. The loss was disappointing for the Tigers’ premiership hopes as they also suffered a number of serious injuries to key players.

Boyup Brook finished its season on a high with an impressive 71-point win over last-placed Bridgetown with Sean Barrett, Rhien Lloyd and Mat Thompson (four goals) named best, while Matt Wheatley and Michael Johnston tried hard for the losers.

Southerners proved too strong at home for rivals Deanmill with a solid 52-point win

with Lachlan Leggett, Quade Kitson and Brad Blake playing well in the wet conditions. Deanmill were well served by Ben Farquhar, Christian Dehaan and Brett Giblett who battled in a losing effort.

WAAFL Integrated Football culminates with grand final derby

By Sophie James

Two years ago the Fremantle CBC Football Club Integrated team were holding a premiership cup aloft.

This year, both Fremantle CBC Integrated teams will be looking to claim the silverware as they go head to head in the WAAFL Integrated Football grand final this Sunday at Steel Blue Oval.

In a competition first, two teams from the same club have won the right to play in the season’s grand final.

This season CBC Gold finished on top of the integrated ladder, while club mates in CBC Green finished third. A convincingly win over Kingsway during the elimination finals gave CBC Green its grand final spot.

In the culmination of a season that had six teams compete in an eight-round competition, Sunday’s grand final will highlight the ever increasing ability from the two teams.

The big game will take place at 2.30pm, with Swan Districts hosting a ‘Come and Try’ for persons interested in joining the Integrated competition next season from 12.30pm.

Integrated Co-ordinator Greg Gilbee said the day would showcase the best of the Integrated players in game between the top two sides.

“It’s our most important game of the season, and to host the game at a WAFL ground highlights the significance of the competition and how it’s growing each season,” he said.

In what has already been a big year for the CBC, having both teams feature in the grand final will be a great close to their Integrated season.

As a single side in the competition, Fremantle CBC has appeared in both of the Integrated grand finals, taking the premiership in 2011 but being beaten by Lynwood Ferndale in 2012.

This year, the two teams have been formed from last year’s squad.

CBC Gold Coach Brendon Bleakley said the development of his team has been pleasing and he looked forward to playing at the WAFL ground on Sunday.

“The boys will have their work cut out for them on the large expanses of Steel Blue Oval against their co tenant,” he said.

CBC Green, coached by Damian Rapanaro, have enjoyed a consistent season with just two losses and were also looking forward to playing their grand final on the bigger playing surface.

In their only meeting this year, CBC Gold claimed the win against CBC Green with a final score of 4.7 (31) to 2.2 (14).

Now at the end of the season, it would seem that both teams share the one dream - to win the 2013 premiership and claim the bragging rights.

The Integrated Grand Final starts at 2.30pm following a ‘Come and Try’ from 12.30 at Steel Blue Oval.
