Aligning the WAFLIN a few weeks, East Perth and Peel will make their positions clear on the alignment model that binds them to West Coast and Fremantle respectively. The issue of WAFL club alignments, which has undertaken various forms since first being introduced in 1999, remains emotive and divisive. Both the Royals and the Thunder boards are currently deliberating the recommended extension of the existing agreement that came out of the West Australian Football Commission’s recent Structural Review of Football, conducted by the Boston Consulting Group. The current system started in its complete form in 2014 when all West Coast players became Royals and all Fremantle-listed players joined the Thunder. It was an originally a five-year agreement. Signed in 2012, there was a transition period in 2013 that involved new West Coast and Fremantle recruits being sent directly to the Royals and the

Thunder while established recruits remained

with their previous WAFL clubs.

The WAFC recommendation

is that the current alignment model

be extended beyond 2018 to the end of 2021.

The WAFC said renewal of the model would provide stability to the competition and a clear development pathway for West Coast and Fremantle. “The WAFL is the state’s premier competition and participating through partnership with WAFL clubs is the best fit for our AFL clubs. The partnership enhances the competition and eliminates the needs for a national reserves competition,” the report said. “Extending to 2021 also allows more time to review the partnership model once other reforms have been implemented.” However, in the wake of the report, East Perth and Peel have both made it clear that they are yet to make decisions regarding the future of the partnership. The Royals said they were cognisant of the variety of views of members and supporters. “Those views and the sentiments of other club stakeholders will be taken into account, as will the effects of decisions taken by the WAFC in the wake of the Boston Consulting Group’s recent report,” the club said. “Subject to any significant change being announced by the WAFC to the structure of the WAFL, it is likely that the board will make a decision on the partnership model within the next four to six weeks. “The issues facing WAFL clubs are myriad and complex. The future direction of the WAFL competition itself is uncertain. “What is undoubtedly certain is that the East Perth Football Club can be judged to be both financial and stable. The board’s focus is the club’s long-term sustainability.” Peel CEO John Ditchburn echoed the stance of the Royals, saying the Thunder board meets again next week as they work to cement their position. Should the alignment model be abandoned, a player like West Coast big man Fraser McInnes would likely end up back at their WAFL club of origin, which for him was Perth.

It’s amazing how often I mention something in this column that turns up just a few weeks later, usually by pure chance. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve written about the Paul Rigby cartoons that were printed on glossy paper and issued at Walsh’s Menswear shops in the 1960s. They’re certainly rare. In fact, in 32 years of collecting, I had seen just 13 up until this year. Of those, 12 were in my own collection. Then, Subiaco supporter Kevin came forward with a small pile of them, including six I didn’t have. That took the total to 19. Finally, this week, I went to purchase a pile of old magazines and books from long-time collector and South Fremantle supporter Colin, in Meadow Springs. And, wouldn’t you know it, amongst the lot was a nice pile of the cartoons. In fact, Colin had 10 that I hadn’t seen before. Not only does that take the total of different cartoons that I’ve seen to 29, but it confirms that they couldn’t have been issued during a single season (my understanding is they were issued weekly, and we’ve never had a 29-week season). Further research on those in Colin’s collection confirmed that his were almost all issued in 1966, whereas Kevin’s date to 1967. That confirmation is the good news. The bad news is that it means there is probably another 20-ish out there that I haven’t seen, at least if there was one issued every week for two seasons.

they don’t often turn up for the WAFL clubs like they do for VFL clubs. When I last wrote about them, the oldest I had seen was for the 1912 season for North Fremantle Football Club, which then played in the WAFL. That’s obviously now been beaten by this beautiful little red book, which features a full set of fixtures for the 1909 season inside, and the names of the club’s patron, president, committee members, delegates and secretary on the back. To the sales and, for the first time in a few weeks, there’s interesting prices to report. One seller auctioned quite a few items relating to Perth Football Club, including a mirror from 1978 that sold for $510. It’s a price that’s on the high side for these (it’s the third highest price I’ve seen paid for any WAFL mirror), but there were four interested bidders. Perth grand final pennants from 1974,

1976 and 1977 sold for between $27 and $41 apiece,

much lower than the prices previously paid for pennants featuring other clubs. A set of eight of the most common WAFL drinking glasses fetched $212.50 at auction, proving they have come back from the $40-$60 each that they would once have fetched. And one keen buyer paid $220 for a 1965 grand final Football Budget, which covered the classic game between East Fremantle and Swan Districts. Finally for this week, I’ve had my eyes opened recently to the collecting habits of others, especially those who keep items relating to oil companies and number plate collectors. Both areas have a relationship with WAFL collecting. The oil companies made lots of WAFL memorabilia, including a pile of transfers/decals that came out in the 1960s. But I find the number plate collection even more amazing. One collector, Jim, has been documenting all the different number plates issued in WA’s history and, of course, this includes plates made for people who want to show they support a particular WAFL club. Over the years, each club has issued at least one number plate. And most have issued several. Here’s just a few. I’ll show you some more of Jim’s catalogue in the coming weeks.

Last week, I wrote about a collection of South Fremantle memorabilia that I had picked up from another collector. I also promised to show you some more of the haul. Two of the better items were originally issued to members. The first was a lady’s pass for 1913, belonging to a “Miss A.G. Edmonds” (research revealed her to be Amelia Edmonds and, later, Mrs Henry Panton). It’s one of the

earliest tickets, of any type, I’ve seen. But it was pre-dated by the other item – a 1909 member’s ticket book. Now, I’ve written about these books before and how

sWAn DIstRICts v CLAReMont

PeeL v eAst PeRtH

PeelRecent history: The Thunder started 2017 as if 2016 hadn’t ended. Wins over East Perth and East Fremantle gave Peel great hope for another successful season. Since there have been only losses to South Fremantle, Subiaco and West Perth before a bye.the question mark: Which Peel team will turn up? The Thunder gave up almost 150 more possessions to the Falcons in round five. Very few teams win matches with such an imbalance.Keep the binoculars on: Josh Mathers has made a steady return to the league team after starting the season in the reserves. He grabbed the opportunity in the previous outing and the Thunder match committee noted the effort.

East PerthRecent history: New coach Luke Webster got to celebrate his first win with the Royals last week. It eased a little of the pressure after five straight losses. But the trip to Mandurah is another obstacle this Saturday.the question mark: Can Scott Jones stand up to the Peel ruck challenge? Jones and Fraser McInnes dominated the big man department last round. Jon Griffin and Sean Darcy present a tougher opposition this week.Keep the binoculars on: Unfortunately for Eric Mackenzie he isn’t being preferred as a defender for West Coast. That is a boost for the Royals because Mackenzie is not only a renowned shadow but is a very efficient avenue out of danger.

West PeRtH v PeRtH

West PerthRecent history: A couple of wins over quality opposition Peel and Swan Districts has returned some confidence to a West Perth team that now sits in the top five with a 3-2 tally. the question mark: Can Aaron Black continue to be a ball magnet? He had 47 touches in the win over Swans. Could he be on the end of a Perth double-tag? Or could he earn former AFL shadow Clint Jones as an opponent?Keep the binoculars on: The name van Berlo seems to have been around West Perth for a long time. The family celebrates another milestone at West Perth when Jay van Berlo notches his 150th appearance in the famous guernsey. The tally includes three appearances in the Foxtel Cup.

PerthRecent history: The solid win over East Fremantle in round four was undone by the defeat at the hands of East Perth in the previous round. It left Perth with a 1-4 record.the question mark: Does Perth have the midfield to run with West Perth? The Falcons dominated possession early against Swan Districts last week. The Demons cannot afford to give their opposition the luxury this time.Keep the binoculars on: If the Demons are to challenge across the middle then Corey Byrne will need a similar performance to his 35-possession haul in just his seventh league match in round six.

the battle: How things can change in six weeks. When the teams met in round one Peel was brimming with confidence. It was the first game after a flag, plenty of young AFL talent bristling with enthusiasm and an opposition coach facing his first match. Now the Thunder has lost many of the shining lights to Fremantle and the Royals have got a little momentum after Mark Hutchings, Will Maginness and Luke Partington helped turnaround the team’s fortunes. Peel has had the bye to rest a few senior players because it will be Rory O’Brien, Leroy Jetta and Brayden Lawler who will have to lead the Thunder strike. Matt Taberner, with 14 goals for the season, must again stand tall in attack for the Mandurah team.

the battle: The scoreline mightn’t have indicated it but West Perth is on the charge. With more than 450 possessions against Swan Districts the Falcons’ ability to get their hands on the ball is frightening. And there have been glimpses of West Perth being able to put the package together with Michael Lourey getting busier in attack, Nic Rodda defiant in defence and when called up the ground and Ben King settling into the line-up to give the Falcons a rounded finish. There is a lot of enthusiasm at Perth with Aidan Tropiano, Cody Ninyette and Michael Sinclair getting into the action. Then there is the ability of Clint Jones to reel in 51 possessions like he did in round six.

Swan DistrictsRecent history: The dam wall finally burst for the black ducks. But only just. There was a lot more to like about Greg Harding’s emerging unit in the five-point loss to West Perth, which broke Swans’ four wins to start the season.the question mark: Can Swan Districts iron out the few mistakes that cost it the win against West Perth? If the black and whites can learn from the errors then they have the ability to rebound.Keep the binoculars on: Todd Banfield has filled a variety of roles for his team. Last week he bobbed up as an important forward with three goals and was a potential match-winner for Swans.

ClaremontRecent history: Claremont’s positive opening to the new campaign has hit a wall with consecutive losses to South Fremantle and Subiaco to be at 3-2. In those defeats the Tigers kicked 6.10 (46) and 6.9 (45).the question mark: Will the Tigers stand up to one of the league’s leaders? When running into top of the ladder teams the Bulldogs and Lions, Claremont has faltered. Swans have a 4-1 record.Keep the binoculars on: With so many injuries hitting the Tigers they will need their experienced leaders to guide the way as they fight for a return to top form. Ian Richardson is atop that list and his forward-line vigour will be important to Claremont.

the battle: The Tigers are licking their wounds with Bailey Rogers (knee), Jack Richardson (hamstring) and Ryan Neates (knee) being notable absentees in recent weeks. But Claremont is confident Zac Langdon and Tom Shanahan will return from bouts of concussion to bolster the team. Brayden Noble highlighted Swan Districts’ ability to stay in the fight with his strong last quarter effort a week ago. Claremont will have to be wary of that if it is to claim an important away win, albeit the Tigers have yet to return to the redeveloped Claremont Oval this season.

2017 Colts Coaches AWARD

Fourteen Western Australians have been selected for the 2017 Rio Tinto Flying Boomerangs and World Team squads to compete at the 2017 NAB AFL Under 16 Championships on the Gold Coast in July. The players were selected following the 2017 AFL National Male Diversity Championships in Blacktown. WA took out both divisions of the week-long Diversity Championships, which featured over 300 young Indigenous and Multicultural AFL players across 13 teams representing all States and Territories. The WA Kickstart side remained undefeated in the Championships, defeating Tasmania 12.7 (79) to 1.1 (7) in the grand final and coming out on top for the seventh year in a row.

Kickstart captain Jordan Kickett was named WA Kickstart MVP and Reece Gerrand was the leading goal kicker. In the All Nations grand final, WA defeated a determined South Australian side 3.6 (24) to 2.4 (16). The AFL Flying Boomerangs program is a personal development and leadership program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young men aged 14-16 years old, supported by Rio Tinto. Meanwhile the World Team is made up of the best upcoming AFL multicultural players from across the nation. AFL General Manager Game Development, Andrew Dillon, said the Rio Tinto AFL Flying Boomerangs and World Team programs were a great opportunity for the best rising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural talent in the nation to develop on and off the field.

The significant role coaches play in sport should never be underestimated and for the WAFL umpires, it is no different. There are more than 10 field umpire coaches, led by head coach Cam Douglas. WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair said the strength of the coaches was their ongoing commitment to professional development and ability to deliver a consistent message centered around the Umpire Master Plan. “We have Academy Coach Greg Gilbee who coaches over 20 umpires to ensure that when they progress through the umpire pathway they are equipped to manage colts and in time progress to reserves and league football,” he said. “Our goal umpire team is led by John Marrapodi, who has a wealth of expertise

Rodriguez ShieldThe Rodriguez Shield is awarded to the most consistent WAFL club of the season, with points allocated across all three grades. Clubs are awarded 10 points for every league win and four points for a reserves or colts win.

Leadership a focus for developing WAFL umpiresand is well supported by five goal umpire assistants. We have 30 goalies on our list with a whole range of skills so it is crucial that our coaches adapt to each personal area of development. “The boundary team is headed up by Geoff O’Neill who has improved the experience and maturity of our boundary umpires to service the needs of the competition. Geoff is well supported by three other coaches who dedicate their time and energy to ensure the boundary team meet all standards. “Our support team also do an outstanding job and play a critical role to make sure our umpires maintain a level of fitness throughout the whole season. This includes strength and conditioning coach Luke Daniher together with Head Trainer Peta Ryan and Rehabilitation Coordinator Tayla Lewis, who are a very cohesive and professional team that work countless hours.” Sinclair said the quality of the coaching environment was a result of everyone working

together across all the umpiring disciplines and understanding that every discipline is of equal status. “We have really worked hard this year through our leadership model to ensure everyone feels respected and valued whether you’re our most experienced umpire Dean Margetts, or first year umpires Travis Hammond or Chad Smith. We have had a genuine focus on this great game being for everyone.” On ANZAC Day over 60 WAFL Umpires attended the ANZAC Day Service at the South Perth Civic Centre to pay tribute to the ANZACs. “Many of our umpires ancestors have wonderful but sad stories and many of these were shared after the service when we trained then had breakfast. Several umpires also attended services with their families at their local communities,” Sinclair said.

The 2017 season has started with the dominant teams from 2016 sitting at the top of the ladder. University, Scarborough and Trinity Aquinas have started their 2017 campaigns with two wins from two matches, with University leading the way by percentage. University secured a 31-point victory in Round 1 before a 78-point win over Whitford in Round 2 has given them a handy percentage to start the season. Scarborough just managed to hold off Wembley in Round 1 to record a 12-point victory, while in Round 2 they had a comfortable 63-point win over West Coast. Scarborough have been helped up forward by Samuel Davies and Jesse Gribble who have kicked six and five goals respectively already. Reigning premiers Trinity Aquinas have managed to get the four points each week but have done it a little tougher with a five-point win in Round 1 and a 29-point victory in Round 2. Newly-promoted teams Wembley and Whitford are yet to win a game as is West Coast who narrowly missed out on the finals last season. Although Wembley are yet to win a game they have been competitive in both the matches they have played. They went down by just 12 points to Scarborough in Round 1 and 20 points to North Beach in Round 2.

Usual contenders strong already

» Scarborough have made it two wins from two games already this season.

Boxwood Hill opened the Ongerup Football Association season in impressive style with a 40-point win over last year’s premiers Newdegate at Boxwood Hill. Rohan Vaux, Aaron Davis and Shane Davy each bagged two goals, while Michael Swarbick and Beau Vaux were named best. Newdegate were well-served by David Newman and Michael Hams with Chris Wollaston and Dean Rintoul chipping in with two majors each.

Boxwood Hill downs Premiers In a closer game, Jerramungup held on to record a 19-point win over Gnowangerup with Brent Bailey in good form with four goals, while Jayden Brooks and Bryce Lee added good support. The Bulldogs best were Thomas Stewart and Dougal Morrison, while Stanley Long-Turner was good up forward with five majors. The Ongerup Football Association has become a five-team competition (Jerramungup, Gnowangerup, Boxwood Hill, Newdegate, Lake-Grace-Pingrup) after Borden went into recess just prior to the start

of the season citing a lack of players. Borden had struggled last season going without a win all year.
