What more could Claremont Football Club want from a Sunday?

Colts directly into the Grand Final. Tick. Reserves defy South Fremantle in an epic Elimination. Tick.

The League side produces its finest performance of the season to book a Grand

Final spot. Tick. It was the perfect day for a

football club that is well and truly rolling in September

and by the looks of things will be hard to stop.

Despite finishing second on the ladder to hosts South Fremantle, the Tigers found an extra gear

in the second semi-final to defeat the minor premiers by 47 points.

Claremont captain Kane Mitchell couldn’t have dreamt of a better start to the Optus WAFL Finals Series.

“It was a massive day for the club,” Mitchell said.

“To start the way we did with the Colts and play some outstanding football. The Reserves have come from 1-3 to make the Prelim.

“For us to play the way we did in the League was sensational. It was all off the back of pressure and defence – that’s how

we have always wanted to play.”As the final siren went and the

Claremont crowd gathered to meet

the playing group, Mitchell quickly huddled the group in for a message, it’s clear the job wasn’t done.

“I have been in this position before ten years ago, playing in my first WAFL Grand Final,” he said.

“I was lucky enough to have a couple of gurus in Clancy Rudiforth and Andrew Browne leading that side.”

“The message was to stay humble and know that the job isn’t done. We played really, really well and to enjoy that moment because that is why we play footy.

“We know we still have a job to do but it was a nice moment.”

Today’s Preliminary Final will decide the Tigers’ opponent with South Fremantle hosting West Perth in a do-or-die final.

The Bulldogs have been the team to beat all season. Seven wins from eight starts has proven their premiership credentials but standing in their way of a dream decider is a dogged Falcons outfit.

Returning players will boost the line-up and give the home team the best possible chance of returning the following week.

West Perth overcame Perth by 11 points in one of the games of the season to secure a spot in the Preliminary Final.

The Falcons leaders stood up again in the pivotal moments to secure a memorable victory, with the likes of Aaron Black, Luke Meadows and Tyler Keitel delivering on the big stage.

The only previous clash between the Falcons and Bulldogs this season saw the latter victorious by just eight points in a tight tussle, giving both sides plenty of confidence heading into today’s final.

Coincidentally, all three remaining League coaches played in a West Perth premiership together, adding just another layer to an intriguing season.

Whatever the result on Sunday, the final two weeks of the Optus WAFL Season will reach an exciting climax.

Three quality teams are all vying for a premiership no one will ever forget in season 2020.

It might not look like much, but this little card is a cracking piece of football memorabilia that features one of today’s preliminary final contestants – West Perth.

And I doubt whether there is another one in existence.

Back in 1925, football teams didn’t make too many trips outside of the state. The Eastern States tour was pioneered by South Fremantle in 1911, followed by East Fremantle in 1912, North Fremantle in 1913 and Perth in 1914. Of course, Port Adelaide had come here in 1910 and Kalgoorlie Railways had gone to Adelaide in 1911. But that was about it until after WWI.

And West Perth’s trip to Tasmania in 1925 was, so far as I can find, the first trip by a WA club to the apple isle, coming just a year after the state team’s trip to Hobart for the national carnival.

During 2020, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

While away, the Cardinals defeated a Goldfields representative team in Kalgoorlie by five goals, lost by eight points to the Hobart-based Tasmanian Football League combined side and then defeated the Launceston-based Northern Tasmanian Football Association combined side by a goal.

And, as a very early example of a WA club tour itinerary, this little card would have been with one of the members of the travelling party for the entire trip.

It was found stuffed inside the match program for the game against the NTFA – another item of great rarity.

In all my years of collecting, I’ve only ever seen this single copy of the program from the game against the NTFA and one from the game against the Hobart league. I wonder if any others survive?

Meanwhile, and in the interests of squaring the memorabilia ledger between the competing teams today, I thought I would highlight an unusual collectable I was recently shown – a clipboard.

Back in the 1980s, marketing managers would slap a WAFL club logo on almost anything in an effort to make an extra buck.

This South Fremantle clipboard is a throwback from that time, while the WANFL clipboard, featuring a Marlboro logo, probably dates to the late 1970s.

I’ve not seen too many clipboard survivors, but I suspect they would be popular at auction nowadays because of the great imagery on them.

Given that WAFL Collectables has been stretched out to two pages this week, I’ve also got an opportunity to look at some of the more interesting sales of late.

One that went ahead with little fanfare was the East Perth Online Auction, which featured 16 doors from the club’s old changeroom lockers.

In recent years, Claremont has sold off several of its lockers at its annual fundraising auctions, while West Perth sold the doors from three of its old lockers at the club’s 2019 gala auction.

The Royals followed suit this year, and found plenty of interested bidders for the individual doors on offer.

The highest price paid was $425, by a Kalgoorlie-based collector who won the battle for the #9 door that carried the names of Jackie Guhl, Jack Leadbitter, Syd Jackson, Larry Kickett and Lucio Baroni.

A Melbourne-based collector snagged the #1 door bearing the names of Ben Wallish, “Digger” Thomas, Mal Brown, Shawn Colbung and Paul Ridley for $355, while it was particularly pleasing to see Marilyn Pitter secure the door bearing the name of her husband, Eddie, and Michael Swan buy the doors for his own #44 and his brother’s #35.

Meanwhile a somewhat unusual item was sold online just last weekend by a former medal and badge maker.

The retiree sold off a replica Sandover Medal, which looked pretty much as good as the real thing.

I thought it would be a big hit with collectors, especially as something to display next to a photo or some other item with a connection to a Sandover Medal winner. But it sold for a rather disappointing $53.80.

There was, however, a great member badge on offer during the week that was something of a hit with collectors.

The older badges have been pretty thin on the ground of late, so it came as no surprise that three serious bidders should compete for the 1936 Perth member badge and push the final sale price to $132.50.

All in all, it shows that there is still plenty of interest in rare WAFL memorabilia, especially those pieces that are linked to the heyday of the competition.

Finally for this week, I just wanted to remind readers that WAFL Collectables can be contacted any time during the summer, by post, email or phone (details below) for any of those curly memorabilia questions you might have.

I’m especially keen to hear from anyone with items worthy of featuring in this column in 2021.

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, PO Box 8352, Perth BC, WA 6849. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Peel Thunder’s remarkable journey from WAFL Women’s wooden spooners to premiers in the space of 12 months is complete after they earned a hard-fought Grand Final victory against Subiaco at Provident Financial Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Joondalup venue played host to the WAFLW Grand Final of 2020 featuring a Subiaco team who has finished on top of the ladder in both seasons of the competition and were trying to get rewarded while Peel was looking to keep its dramatic rise.

The Thunder won just one game in 2019 to claim the wooden spoon and then they still had to win their final home and away season game in 2020 at home to Claremont to even make the finals.

But they did that and ended up in second spot, and then turned around the result from the second semi-final against Subiaco after beating East Fremantle in the preliminary final to dominate Saturday’s Grand Final and win, 4.4 (28) to 2.1 (13).

With experienced goal machine Kira Phillips and 15-year-old Margaret River sensation Ella Roberts up front, the defence rock solid led by Demi Liddle and Ebony Dowson, and then Abby Barnden in the ruck with a strong support cast, the Thunder were just unstoppable on Grand Final day.

Roberts ended up kicking two goals for the Thunder after taking two strong contested marks. It’s remarkable to think she has done what she has in 2020 while still aged 15 and travelling to and from Margaret River.

The league’s leading goalkicker Kira Phillips also kicked another goal for Peel while directly setting up another for Bailey Molloy.

Chloe Wrigley was named best afield and won the Lou Knitter Medal.

Ebony Bilcich became another fascinating story winning a WAFLW premiership to continue her football rise while being a standout basketballer at the

by Chris Pike

South West Slammers and following the footsteps of dad Stephen who played 215 games and won three premierships with East Fremantle.

Both Subiaco’s goals came courtesy of Maggie MacLachlan with captain Hayley Miller and vice-captain Tiah Haynes tireless workers for the Lions against the tide.

The Joondalup venue is famous for its windy conditions and it was no different for the WAFLW Grand Final on Saturday afternoon and it was Subiaco who had the advantage of that breeze behind them in the first term.

As a result, the Lions did all the attacking early and went on to kick the first goal of the Grand Final thanks to Maggie MacLachlan at the five-minute mark.

While Subiaco continued to attack, Peel’s backline held up well the rest of the opening quarter and didn’t even concede another score.

The Thunder’s forays forward might have been rare but when they did get it inside-50, they managed to get a goal of their own courtesy of Kira Phillips and even went into quarter-time leading by a solitary point.

Then just a minute into the second term and exciting 15-year-old young superstar Ella Roberts slotted a terrific goal with the breeze behind her as the Thunder began to assert their authority on the Grand Final.

It did take 10 more minutes for another goal but Phillips produced a clever kick to the top of the goal square from the pocket where Bailey Molloy took the mark. She went back to kick the goal and the Thunder’s lead grew to 13 points.

Then minutes later and the teenage excitement machine Roberts took another strong contested mark and kicked her second goal of the Grand Final as the Thunder’s advantage grew to 19 points.

Peel would take that 18-point advantage into half-time with Subiaco needing to find something in the third term to keep their premiership hopes alive.

Once again though with the likes of Demi Liddle and Ebony Dowson outstanding in chopping off Subiaco’s attacks inside-50 and Peel’s back-

line stood tall to deny the Lions at virtually every opportunity.

Again the breeze made it difficult for Peel to get it forward in the third term but Subiaco couldn’t quite close the gap as much as the Lions would have liked. They did get one goal back at the four-minute mark

when MacLachlan marked and converted for her second goal of

the Grand Final. But the Lions couldn’t manage

to find another goal with the breeze and the Thunder still held a 14-point

advantage by three quarter-time.There might have been sunshine during the

third quarter at Joondalup but by the start of the fourth quarter the breeze had picked up even more and the clouds had rolled in.

With the now virtual gale force winds making life difficult in the last quarter for both teams, there was just the one score and that was a behind for Peel with the Thunder going on to secure the 4.4 (28) to 2.1 (13) victory.

That completed the remarkable fairytale story of Peel coming from last in 2019 to premiers in 2020 while for Subiaco, it’s a second straight year of heartbreak in the WAFLW competition after claiming the minor premiership in both seasons.

The day at Provident Financial Oval began with the Simply Energy Rogers Cup Grand Final for the Youth Girls, and it was South Fremantle who prevailed to defeat Peel Thunder 8.4 (52) to 1.4 (10) and claim the premiership for 2020.

And then in the WAFLW Reserves Grand Final also at Provident Financial Oval, Claremont defeated East Fremantle to claim the premiership.

The Simply Energy WA State U18s squad has been announced ahead of two NAB AFL All-Stars Exhibition matches on October 10 and 17.

Given the NAB AFL U18 National Champions were cancelled for season 2020 due to COVID-19, each state is hosting its own set of fixtures to showcase talent before the 2020 AFL National Draft.

Players will be given a chance to shine in front of AFL clubs at the conclusion of their WAFL Colts season, with the squad of around 60 to be split into two even teams across both weekends.

Game one will be played at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday, October 10, starting at 11.30am. Game two details are still being finalised for October 17.

The selection process included player nominations from AFL Club recruiting staff, WAFL Talent Manager Selection Meetings and input from the State Academy Staff.

WA State Talent Manager Adam Jones congratulated all of the players selected and praised the work of players and staff throughout a challenging season.

Simply Energy WA U18s squad announced

“Given the change of format this season, these two games provide the perfect opportunity to showcase all the talent Western Australia has to offer,” he said.

“The squad includes players from our program in 2019, strong performers in the WAFL Colts competition and a glimpse into the future with 2021 draft prospects.”

“Players inside the squad of 57 are guaranteed to play at least one of the two games and there is the possibility to add to the group over the coming weeks.”

2019 Colts Premiership coach and current WAFC Coach Coordinator Ross McQueen and West Perth Colts Coach Ryan Lasscock will coach a team each with a number of WAFL Colts coaches contributing as assistants.

2019 National Championship winning State 18s coach Peter Sumich will oversee the combined squad.

The AFLW WA U18s will play a one-off fixture against a WAFLW All-Stars line-up on Saturday, September 26.

The NAB AFLW Draft will be held on October 6 via a virtual event.
