The pathway to the 2020 Optus WAFLW Grand Final couldn’t have been more different for Subiaco and Peel Thunder, but in a year that has thrown up so many challenges, both teams wouldn’t have it any other way.

Subiaco reach the finale 12 months after an agonising defeat at the hands of Swan Districts in a Preliminary Final. For the past two seasons, the Lions, alongside the Sharks, have been the dominant force in women’s football.

In 2019, Subiaco finished two games clear at the top of the ladder with gun forward Tarnee Tester kicking 26 goals and Hayley Miller and Danika Pisconeri dual winners of the Dhara Kerr Medal. Aside from winning the Premiership the maroon and gold couldn’t have done much more.

Fast forward a year and the season has played out largely similar. Subiaco claimed the Minor Premiership losing just the one fixture and head into the final as favourites after a tight victory over Peel in the 2nd Semi-Final.

Peel’s rise to the top has been equally as remarkable. Put simply, the Thunder have gone from last to first, in one season.

The 2019 season couldn’t have gone worse for the team from Mandurah, winning just one game and finishing 20-points behind fifth-placed Claremont.

That same side with some added firepower now finds itself in a WAFLW Grand Final.

Make no mistake, this has been a phenomenal team effort. The depth of Peel’s squad has been the catalyst behind the stunning rise, seeing youngsters step up against some of the AFLW’s best players.

Midfielder Ella Roberts is the epitome of Peel. 15-years-old and nothing to lose, the young star stepped up in the final quarter of the knockout Preliminary Final to kick two match-winning goals.

The youngest player on the ground by some margin and she was the difference.

Fellow up-and-comer Sarah Verrier has impressed, while a returning Kira Phillips has been the dominant forward of the competition.

Kate Bartlett’s composure and leadership has given Peel an extra edge, while Cassie Davidson has held up the backline.

The Subiaco side is full of stars. Fremantle star Hayley Miller will lead the side and wants nothing more than a Premiership.

Ange Stannett is a standout player in the AFLW giving her the perfect platform to show her ability in the WAFLW, while GWS’ Aimee Schmidt has provided a target up forward.

Seasoned WAFLW campaigners Tiah Haynes, Danika Pisconeri and Lindal Rohde round out an impressive line-up.

The two sides do share one thing in common, new coaches.

Steve Markham took over as Peel Thunder’s head coach after a successful stint in the Rogers Cup, while former Fremantle player Amy Lavell began the season at the helm of the Lions.

Despite the different journeys, Provident Financial Oval will host the two best teams of the 2020 season.

We are set for an epic clash.

To say the wait for the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season was worth it might be one of the great understatements and the drama filled day on Saturday to determine the finals bound teams captured everyone’s imagination.

For a while thanks to COVID-19 there was a very real chance we might not have been able to have a WAFL season at all, but given what has ended up eventuating over the past nine weeks that would have been the biggest of shames.

The only thing that we did know for sure coming into Round 9 to close the home and away season was that South Fremantle would finish on top as minor premiers and Peel Thunder would finish with the wooden spoon.

Claremont had the bye and were locked into a finals position, but whether they finished second or third was still to be decided.

The rest was stamped with a massive to be decided label setting the stage for the most dramatic of Saturday afternoon and evenings.

West Perth could have got really unlucky if all the results went against them but they also had a chance to move up into second position while Perth, Subiaco and East Perth were all virtually fighting over the one position in the finals.

The first domino to fall was to see if East Perth was able to put itself in the finals hunt with a big win against Peel Thunder. The Royals did that at Leederville Oval beating the Thunder 15.11 (101) to 4.6 (30).

Then the focus turned to what happened at Joondalup’s Provident Financial Oval between West Perth and Subiaco. The Falcons snapped a 10-match losing streak against the Lions with the 12.5 (77) to 8.10 (58) victory.

The 19-point win left West Perth agonisingly short of moving percentage ahead of Claremont into second spot, though, leaving them locked into third and to host the first semi-final.

The combination of East Perth’s 71-point win and Subiaco’s 19-point defeat left the Royals going ahead of the Lions on percentage into fourth spot.

The seasons of East Perth and Perth were then on the line when the Demons hosted the undefeated South Fremantle at Lathlain’s Mineral Resources Park in the late starting game on Saturday.

Adding to the whole drama of the situation was that Perth had to give South Fremantle its first loss of 2020 if the Demons were to play finals football for the first time since 1997.

It was never going to be easy and while the nerves were obvious with the way Perth missed opportunity after opportunity in front of goal in the last quarter, they just wouldn’t be denied.

With a big and vocal home crowd desperately willing them on and growing ever more frustrated as the Demons kicked eight behinds in the fourth term, they were completely dominant and the Bulldogs couldn’t get out of their back half.

In the end, Matthew Rogers did kick truly for the only goal of the last quarter, Perth won the game 8.18 (66) to 9.7 (61) and a first finals appearance in 23 years was a reality for the Demons.

Wild scenes then took hold of the old Lathlain Park starting with the Perth players celebrating wildly before being joined of the rest of their playing squad members, and then hundreds of supporters and members.

The only thing to come anything close to it this century was when Swan Districts fans stormed onto Arena Joondalup when they thought they’d won the 2008 preliminary final to break their 18-year Grand Final drought.

The emotion at Lathlain with the result of the Demons ending that finals drought was remarkable and a once in a lifetime experience for anyone present.

The reward now for Perth is to play a West Perth team it hasn’t beaten since 2011 at Joondalup in the first semi-final.

South Fremantle hosts Claremont with a Grand Final spot up for grabs.

The old timers of footy love to talk about how much tougher the game was in the past.

They’ll tell you about “punching the ball with ears”, stomping on their opponents’ feet or having a fist fight while the umpire was up the other end of the ground.

But they won’t tell you about the modelling jobs!

This week’s feature item is a bit whacky, but it’s a beauty for a collector of WAFL memorabilia from the 1970s and it features some of the best players of the era.

It’s actually a modelling catalogue for the Joyce Spiers Modelling School & Agency.

Ms Spiers was a high-profile model herself in the 1950s, and her agency was one of the best known in the city in the 70s.

Obviously, at some point, she had the idea of getting league footballers into the rotation, most likely so that she could offer them as models to menswear retailers.

And a promotional card was produced for each of those players, so that those prospective employers could see what the player would look like while modelling their clothes.

One Football Budget reader recently showed me an album containing some of the cards … and while the players were at the top of their game at the time, I’m not sure they were at the top of the modelling game.

COLLECTABLESCOLLECTABLESDuring 2020, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

Scan the QR-code using your smart phone, or go to http://waflfootyfacts.net/trivia.php for the answers and to view extended game previews

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photo-graphs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, PO Box 8352, Perth BC, WA 6849. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

Those players featured were: Kevin Bryant (EP), Peter Featherby (S), Ian Miller (EP), Phil Kelly (EP), Joe McKay (SF), Bill Valli (WP), Graham Moss (C), Peter Spencer (EP), Rob Wiley (P), and Barry Day (WP).

Whatever the case, it’s the only such catalogue I have ever seen and I can imagine the players involved would cringe when looking back at the fashion of the time.

Thankfully, the footy jumpers worn by Featherby and Bryant allowed me to date their cards to about 1977 – coincidentally, the last time Perth won the flag. Could its re-emergence this year be an omen?

The other item to come to light this week was a Cardinals penant, the likes of which I also hadn’t seen before.

It reminds me of the penants made between 1959 and the late 1970s for teams competing in the grand final. But I’m led to believe this one was made much earlier.

Has anyone seen a similar penant, for West Perth or any other team? Or does someone have a memory of these being sold?
