Claremont connects with the Claremont connects with KIMBERLEYFor more than a century the WAFL has been luring the best young regional talent to Perth.

In some cases coming to the big city just isn’t practicable.

That is certainly the challenge for Claremont with its vast Kimberley development zone.

The Tigers have pioneered a raft of programs for the northern region for almost a decade but the tyranny of distance has presented the club with a series of logistical problems.

It is impossible to bring some of the best youngsters to the metropolitan area because of schooling, cultural or travel issues.

So if the juniors can’t go to the mountain, Tigers management decided the next best thing was to take the WAFL mountain to the juniors.

Earlier this month, Claremont and Swan Districts combined to play the first colts

match for premiership points in Broome.

But there was also something special about the boys in the famous guernseys. The players

originated from the State’s North, not from the clubs’ metropolitan zones.

It was an extraordinary exercise and it was well backed by the other WAFL clubs,

which agreed the match could be played as an

official colts fixture, and the WA Football Commission.

Claremont football manager Dean Horsington was one of architects of the project that became one of the success stories of the WAFL season.

“We had been talking about taking our colts players to the Kimberley but obviously that would

be too costly so the idea quickly turned into using local players,” Horsington said.

“The proposal was put to the other football managers who could all see the bigger picture so the idea quickly got off the ground.

“We really wanted to ensure we made a connection between Claremont and the Kimberley. And by using local talent we feel the club has strengthened the talent pathway for players in that region. They are aware now the club has a presence in the area.”

Swan Districts was the natural partner in the plan because it services the Pilbara region.

Claremont connects with the the KIMBERLEYKIMBERLEY However, the concept couldn’t have gone ahead with the financial support of local businessman Gary Johnson, who has interests in the Kimberley area.

Johnson’s backing ensured the match was a success and has convinced the Tigers another match can be held next season under similar conditions.

Horsington highlighted that some of the colts players travelled hundreds of kilometres to play in the match.

“There was a bus that picked up some players from just outside Kununurra,” he said.

“We couldn’t have done this without the backing of Gary Johnson, who’s a great supporter of WAFL football, and, just as importantly, indigenous welfare in the Kimberley.”

Football wasn’t the sole focus of the exercise.

With the guidance of local body Garnduwa and major mining services company Leighton, all the players also enjoyed educational and cultural programs.

“There was a double element. The boys got to play colts football but they also learned a bit more about schooling and the opportunities to get employment,” Horsington said.

“It was important we had both those areas covered.”

The past fortnight has seen a major spotlight on the WAFL colts competition.

A week after the Broome clash, three colts matches were staged sequentially at Brownes Stadium in an attempt to showcase the competition’s best young players.

The triple-header was designed to help AFL talent scouts see as many potential draftees as possible.

Bevan booted five goals in the Demons’ demolition of Peel last round to be just two straight kicks behind Smith on the WAFL leading goalkickers tally.

In this season Bevan has kicked more goals than he did in 129 matches with Sydney (39).

South Fremantle’s Mitch Banner jumped into the top eight on the leaderboard with his five-goal haul in the triumph over West Perth.

Time is running out for the WAFL’s brightest young football prospects to launch their challenge for a key league award.

East Fremantle forward Ryan Lester-Smith again polled top votes in the 2013 Combined WAFL Past Players and Officials award to take a commanding lead.

Unfortunately for main rivals, Claremont pair Sam Fong and Matthew Davies, the Tigers had a bye in the previous round preventing them from adding to their tallies. To be eligible players must have notched eight games or less at the start of the 2013 season and be aged 21 years or under at the end of the season.

Votes do not need to be awarded.

Johnson and Lee were both outstanding for the Royals in the win over Swan Districts in the previous round and each received votes in the 2013 Osborne Park Volkswagen Player of the Year award.

The pair are now one vote ahead of previous award leader Jake Murphy from Claremont. The Tigers had the bye in round 18.

The 2013 Osborne Park Volkswagen Player of the Year award voting will soon go in-camera.

9COLLECTABLESby Sean Cowan

During 2013, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

Kicking memorabilia goals with old footballs

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

I have often had to deliver people the bad news that their autographed football isn’t worth as much as they think.

So far as most collectors go, autographed footies are a bit of a pain. The provenance is often poor, the bladder usually disintegrates, and they are difficult to store and display.

In fact, few footballs would be of interest to collectors. But I recently found one that I think could buck the trend.

Sold off by a long-term Perth collector was a red-and-black Burley, which was produced as a souvenir of the Demons’ 1968 premiership.

It’s the only one I’ve ever seen for any WAFL season and I wonder whether these were made for other premiership teams?

It’s probably difficult to put a value on these, but they could be as high as $150-$200 each, if in good nick. That’s more than most collectors are willing to pay for an autographed ball.

So, does anyone have one for any other year?

For years, the Football Register was the bible for West Australian footy lovers.

It recounted each season in detail, and was frequently used to settle arguments.

Sadly, the Register hasn’t been issued since 1990. But back issues of the publication are extremely collectable and those with an eye on football’s history still refer to them today.

There is just one problem – there wasn’t any Register in 1973.

I’ve previously used a little publication called Football Close-Up, which was published in Victoria, to provide players’ details for that season.

However, I have recently discovered another possible substitute, which was published in WA.

Called the WA Football Annual, the first edition was published in 1970 and edited by Mick Connolly. I have seen several copies of this publication, which was about the size of the Football Budget

in those days, and previously thought it was a one-off production.

But South Fremantle supporter Steve recently showed me a copy of the 1977 WA Football Annual, which claimed on its cover to be the “8th Edition”.

This publication, which had a very similar cover to the 1970 book, was about the size of an A4 sheet of paper and was edited by Jim Connolly.

I’m now trying to find out how many more years this publication ran. And, of course, I’m looking for copies of the editions from 1971-1976. Can anyone help? It would be fantastic to finally have a decent written record of the 1973 season.

I have quite a few sale prices to report this week.

First off, there was a 1980s Swan Districts pint glass which sold for just $11 at auction.

Three South Fremantle badges, including membership badges for 1968 and 1974, sold for $63.

A single 1964 Football Budget, in great condition, sold for the unbelievable price of $40, while a range of 1979 Brownes Football Stars of the Milky Way mini posters sold for $10-$15 each.

The last auction items were two very interesting tinnie badges, which were sold off by an Adelaide-based antique dealer.

The first was black-and-white and

bore the initials MJFC, raising the possibility it was for Midland Junction Football Club, which left the WAFL in 1917. It sold for just $5.

Perhaps more likely to be linked to the WAFL, though, was a white badge with “WPFC” and “1918” on it. The letters were printed in red-and-blue and it seems likely to be referring to West Perth. It sold for $33.

Meanwhile, there have been a raft of sales on the private market.

A South Fremantle Marlboro sticker, like the Perth sticker which appeared in this column a few weeks ago, sold for $30, while a South Fremantle pennant from the 1980s fetched the same price.

Meanwhile, programs from a 1973 game between South Fremantle and the Northern Territory Football League sold for $100.

And a pile of Swan Districts memorabilia, including badges from 1962-1971, a 1963 premiership pennant, a photograph of Haydn Bunton Jr, four editions of the Fighting Swan magazine and four rare 1934 WAFL team photos from the Western Mail, sold for $400.

Tweets of the week

@WAFLfootyfacts - Congratulations to @PerthFC  on kicking their highest score at Rushton Park.#waflfootyfacts #wafl

@shayne_hope - WCE midfielder Daniel Kerr reported in the#WAFL. Dove in at contest, got Simon Moore high. No malice, just attacking the footy.

@joshjarder2 - McGough calls for head count. Subi with the legal 18 men on field. Subi get free kick and 50 for “time wasting” #wafl

@lmeyrick - Love the idea of #WAFL Colts super round. 3 games back to back. Great chance for WA kids to show the scouts what they’ve got ahead of draft.

@bassogirl23 - Umps do a good job, but why does it take 20-30 secs to make a call and then it’s after the ball has already moved on!!! #wafl#puzzled

@davelindsay77 - Peel just going with ‘Visitors’ rather than Perth on the scoreboard today. And coach Brandon Hill having a kick in the ressies#wafl

Here’s what some of our followers -- and those football fanatics that we follow -- had to say about all things football last week.

@brett_raponi – Cometti rated best five to ever play @WestPerthFC in #WAFL. Farmer, Whinnen, Dempsey, Steward, France.

GAME PREVIEWS

SUBIACO V CLAREMONT

Medibank Stadium

Suffering consecutive losses, including the Foxtel Cup, for the first time this year, Claremont will look to come out firing against Subiaco.

The Lions were the first team to beat the Tigers this year in round 11, thanks to a strong defensive effort that held Marc Webb’s men to just four goals after quarter time.

To stop the Tigers again the Lions will similarly need to combat their formidable ruck combination and keep Chad Jones and Paul Medhurst from attacking the forward line.

The Tigers have regained Sandover medallist Luke Blackwell, who returned with 30 disposals last week, and will form a tough midfield unit with Jake Murphy and Andrew Browne.

The Lions will look to move the ball through the midfield quickly, so the Tigers will need to limit their paths to their forward 50. And that task will fall to Andrew McDougall, Chris Phelan, George Hampson and Jarrod Kayler-Thompson.

The Tigers will move quickly to get on the scoreboard early, and the Lions will need to keep the margin low to be able mount a competitive challenge.

Clancy Wheeler could line up for his 50th WAFL game as a Lion while teammate McDougall needs just one goal to reach 50 for his career.

Overall: Subiaco 137 Claremont 127 Draw 1

WEST PERTH V EAST PERTH

Arena Joondalup

West Perth’s loss last week has opened up the top four giving East Perth the chance to move on par with the Falcons in second place.

While the Royals finished their last encounter on top, they needed a 6.2 to 0.1 fourth quarter to get their first major lead of the game after being unable to keep Anthony Tsalikis, Jay van Berlo, Aaron Black and Andrew Strijk from running the game in the first three terms.

The Falcons will need to find a way to shut down Josh Smith, who has proven to be able to score under heavy pressure, though they could look to limit his opportunities to get the ball from the midfield.

The Royals can look to spread the ground through Brendan Lee, Craig Wulff and Paul Johnson, although the Falcons may have the stamina to keep their back line strong while being tested.

West Perth needs its onballers to pressure its rivals at the stoppages. Matt Guadagnin, Rohan Kerr and the returning Jason Salecic need to prevent East Perth getting first hands on the ball after the Royals proved to Swan Districts last week how dangerous such an advantage can be.

Overall: West Perth 159 East Perth 163 Draw 6

SWAN DISTRICTS V PEEL

Steel Blue Oval

Thanks to a high percentage and Perth’s bye, Swan Districts could finish the round in third place with a win over Peel.

While the Thunder have not won a game since May, they have been able to push teams into playing a faster yet physical style that the Swans have shied away from in the past.

The Thunder were able to get the better of the Swans in their only other game this season, largely on the back of Cruize Garlett, Viv Michie and Brendon Jones.

While their defensive focus will be on Tony Notte, Tim Geappen, Dayle Garlett and others that pop through Swans’ forward line, the Thunder must stop the black and whites’ supply.

And thus it is imperative Cam Shepherd has plans to shackle Ryan Davis, Wayde Twomey, Shaun Hildebrandt and Graham Jetta further up the ground.

Geappen, held goalless last week for just the second time this year, needs just one goal to reach 300 while Peel’s Devin McFarlane could play his 50th WAFL game.

Overall: Swan Districts 32 Peel 10

SOUTH FREM V EAST FREM

Fremantle Oval

The third Fremantle derby features opponents sitting outside the top four, however, both sides will put up a tough contest for derby bragging rights.

The Bulldogs lifted themselves off the bottom of the table with their surprise win over the Falcons last week and while the Sharks are only two games out of the top four, with just five games remaining - including three against top four sides - they face an uphill battle to sneak into the finals.

While the Sharks won their first match up in April, they were unable to keep the Bulldogs down in the WA Day weekend battle at East Fremantle Oval.

So, in terms of the derby rivalry, this match is the decider for 2013.

The Sharks will look to shut out Mitch Banner and Ben Saunders on the forward line, while keeping an eye on Kris Miller, Ryan Cook, Hayden Schloithe and Ashton Hams across the centre of the ground. Those players were the key to South Fremantle success in the previous round.

To keep the Sharks off the scoreboard the Bulldogs will need to pressure them from the midfield, focusing in particular on restricting their paths to the forward line through Aidan Tropiano, Richard Hadley and Rory O’Brien.

Max Duffy needs just one goal to reach 50 for his WAFL career.

Overall: South Fremantle 166 East Fremantle 194 Draw 4

AAMI WAFL Player of the Week

The inaugural Junior Girls football season concluded this month and the nine teams involved couldn’t be happier with the program.

Four football districts - South Fremantle, Perth, Swan Districts and East Perth - were involved in this innovative competition for girls in Years 4-7.

Teams were drawn from Jandakot, Coolbinia, Thornlie, Bassendean, Armadale, Morley, Manning and Lesmurdie.

Junior Girls season a great success

Over 110 girls and their parents were hooked on the season from week one, as they finally had a competition they could call their own.

South Fremantle District Development Officer Louise McKenry was awestruck with the talent on show in the games she watched.

“I couldn’t believe how the girls improved from round one to round seven. The skill levels and competitive approach were exceptional and I saw lots of little (State Player) Chelsea

Randalls running around out there!” McKenry said.

A definite highlight of the season was the involvement of four teams in the half-time AFL game between West Coast and Essendon on June 27.

“Wow, what an experience the kids had playing half time at the game. They were grinning from ear to ear the whole time we were at the stadium,” said one parent of the night.

“The whole experience was one that they, and me for that matter, will never forget.”

A number of other junior clubs have already enquired about how they can be involved in the 2014 season.

The Junior Girls competition promises to grow quickly, right across the Perth metropolitan area, in order to satisfy the huge demand from the number of girls wanting a ‘fair-dinkum’ football experience.

West Australian community football clubs are set to benefi t from the national launch of The Swisse AFL Quality Club Program.

The program, which is aimed at enhancing the standard of community football clubs, has been running in WA since late 2009. During that time 113 WA football clubs have achieved accreditation – 11 at gold level, seven at silver and 95 at bronze.

Each gold club, and any new clubs that achieve gold accreditation, will not only receive the benefits of being a Quality Club but also score equipment packs for their club, priority access to AFL ticketing, and tickets to the AFL national coaching conference.

The AFL launched the Swisse AFL Quality Club Program nationally this month to provide an opportunity for all community football clubs to improve their administration and operations capabilities, while recognising and rewarding those that meet a range of benchmarks.

The program encourages clubs to

WA football benefits from Swisse AFL community club program

reach new standards in providing safe, well managed, healthy, and happy environments in club football on a local level.

A Swisse AFL Quality Club of the Year Award was also launched encouraging clubs to showcase their ‘People, Passion, Health and Happiness’ and in doing so go into the running to share in over $20,000 of prizes.

Swisse chief executive Radek Sali said Swisse was pleased to be able to connect with football clubs at a community level through the program.

“We have been the official vitamin of the AFL for a number of years and through the Swisse Quality Club Program we are now able to dive deeper and connect with those community clubs that are leading the way in creating healthy and happy local football club environments,” he said.

To be eligible for the Swisse AFL Quality Club of the Year Award, and a share in over $20,000 in prizes, local clubs must first register as Swisse Quality Clubs at either bronze, silver or gold level.

Clubs then have until August 12, 2013 to produce a video that showcases their club’s People, Passion, Health and Happiness and upload it to facebook.com/Swissewellnessaustralia.

Following the selection of a series of finalists, the winning club will be decided via a public vote from August 13–26, with the entry that receives the most unique votes being crowned the 2013 Swisse AFL Quality Club of the Year.

The winning club will receive $5000, two tickets to the 2013 AFL Brownlow Medal, and the Swisse Ultimate Sportsman’s Night.

In addition, Swisse will provide one lucky person with two tickets to the 2013 Toyota AFL Grand Final for simply voting for their favourite grassroots Swisse AFL Quality Club video.

The West Australian Football Commission and West Perth Football District launched a new program in June that uses football to build fundamental movement skills in children aged 18 months to 4.5 years.

Footy Fundamentals was tried as a four-week program at Arena Joondalup for three age groups: 18 months – 2.5 years, 2.5 years – 3.5 years and 3.5 years – 4.5 years.

The program proved so successful it will become a regular fixture with a seven-week program to be launched in Term 3 with Monday and Thursday class options. Kids can then progress on to the hugely popular Auskick model.

“This is an exciting concept for football,” said West Perth Emerging Markets Officer Scott Minchin. “We have developed a program with the aid of local educators and physical education specialists that aims to prepare our kids for the future.

“Fundamental movement skills are patterns of movement that involve different body parts such as the legs, arms, trunk and head and include skills such as running, hopping, catching, throwing, striking and balancing. These skills are the foundation movements to more specialised, complex skills used in kids games, sports, dance and every day activities.”

WAFC Manager of Junior Football Troy Kirkham said the program was one of a kind.

“The Falcons program is an exciting step forward for football and is an exciting opportunity for local families to embrace. The AFL is currently reviewing the concept with

Football for toddlers proving a success

plans to release a similar program Australia wide,” he said.

The program uses locomotor skills in a fun, structured environment that involves parents utilising balls and football games to aid their child’s development.

During the period from 15 months to 3 years old a child develops physical capabilities which progress from being able to ‘toddle’ around unsteadily – having only recently taken first baby steps – into confident mastery of a broad range of complex physical skills such as throwing, catching, running, balancing and kicking.

The program is open to both boys and girls with only 45 places available – 15 in each age group class.

Term 3 Applications are now open.

A determined Kojonup has stamped itself a genuine Lower South West Football League premiership contender with a 71-point thumping of Imperials in Manjimup.

Landmark All Stars Ashley Wallam and Jaden Guidi continued to show impressive form bagging five goals each and were named among the best on ground. Kojonup’s improved standing has resulted in them wining their last four games and cement a spot in the top four.

Imperials were well-served by Clint Zabaznow (four goals) and Keenan Wilson (two goals) while Brady Adam also battled for the losers.

Top side Tigers easily accounted for last-placed Bridgetown with a 188-point

thumping with Rhys Owen (seven goals), Jacob Miolin and league leading goal kicker Lyndon Muir both kicking six each. Troy Wilson was named best on ground with Rhys Owen and Brett Fraser while Clint Best and Darcy Walsh tried hard for the Bulldogs.

Deanmill bounced back after last week’s loss to inflict a 47-point win over last season’s premiers Boyup Brook. Deanmill forward Brant Pears, with six goals, was in good form along with Daniel Sarinis (five goals) while David Markotis and Brendan Davis were named best.

An under-manned Boyup Brook’s best were Rhys Senior and Rhien Lloyd while Matt Thompson was a lone hand up forward with five majors.

With five rounds left the top four looks set with Tigers a game clear from Southerners with Deamill and Kojonup battling for the double chance.

LADDERS AFTER ROUND 14

During their first game on June 9, the under-19s played through damp conditions, in a game against the State 16s side at Brownes Stadium.

The West Coast Eagles AmateurcColts took the field with ferocity and won convincingly over the State 16s side.

The players were very comfortable on the field handing the under 16s a 75-point loss, 17.16 (118) to 6.7 (43).

Lawson Green of Gosnells Football Club was awarded best on ground for the game.

Excited for the game ahead, head coach Cameron Palmer is not only looking to win the Neil Judge Shield back for the WAAFL, but also to be the first undefeated WAAFL West Coast Eagles State 19s team.

“Our game plan is probably pretty revolutionary at this level and I believe was one of the reasons we had success against the WA State 16’s last month,” he said.

“We know who on the country team we need to stop and are well aware that if we play an intense and highly pressured game for four quarters the result will go our way.

“We have focused on this game for three months and all the processes we have put in place and achieved to this point leave us confident of what we can achieve.”

In a bold statement, Palmer stated he believed this year’s squad was capable of beating half of the current WAFL Colts teams.

“As a team we have a number of targets in place that we know that if we hit; we will be successful on any given day,” Palmer said.

The coaching group for this year’s under-19s program are confident with the current squad, though a finalised playing team for Saturday wouldn’t be confirmed until later in the week.

The willingness from WAAFL clubs to encourage their players has allowed the coaches to choose from a highly skilled and talented squad.

The WA Amateur Football League would like to thank all the players and support staff for their time, effort and dedication, ensuring the program remains one of the best amateur football programs in Australia.

Bounce down for the West Coast Eagles State amateur under-19s match against the WA Country Football League Colts is at 12.00pm, Saturday July 27.

Cameron Palmer addresses the 2013 under 19s.

Can You Help?In the 69 seasons since open football resumed in 1945, 6063 diff erent players have debuted in WAFL league football. Of these, the WAFC, after extensive research, is missing a date of birth for 245 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records for 10 of the players for whom birth and other details are sought. These include:

Christopher Mason Rae (Claremont 1971, 1 game) – ex Sandy Bay, Tasmania

Geoffrey Clarence Martin (Subiaco 1957, 6 games) – ex Claremont Reserves

James Frederick Yates (Claremont 1950-51, 2 games) – ex Claremont Mets

Kevin Lewis (East Perth 1964, 1 game) – brother of Irwin

Lyall Lean Fairley (Claremont 1945, 9 games) – died 2010

Ronald Edward Davies (East Fremantle 1950, 1 game) – died 1996

John (Joe) Mountain (Swan Districts 1950, 4 games) – ex Midland

Leslie William Mills (South Fremantle 1950-51, 2 games) – died 1995

Raymond Norman Watterson (Subiaco 1948-1950, 35 games) – ex Scarborough Mets

James Edward (Jim) McGill (West Perth 1953, 1 game) - died 2003

Any information that could help establish contact with or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission.
