Our fi rst group insurance policy, written in 1951 and still in force today, stands as a testament to this commitment.

Our focus on service is frequently recognized in industry quality and satisfaction surveys. According to employer research conducted in 2008 by JHA, 86 percent of The Standard’s group disability customers said they were “extremely” or “very satisfi ed” with the service they received. The Standard was also noted for being easy to do business with, delivering on promises and meeting employers’ needs.5

The Standard has exceeded expectations. That’s because we know our most important promise is the one we make to our customers – to be there when they need us.

A Guide To Understanding Our Ratings

A.M. Best’s Financial Strength Rating process involves a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative analysis of a company’s balance sheet strength, operating performance and business profi le. This includes comparisons to peers and industry standards as well as assessments of an insurer’s operating plans, philosophy and management. Secure ratings range from A++, A+ (Superior) and A, A- (Excellent), to B++, B+(Very Good). Vulnerable ratings range from B, B- (Fair), C++, C+ (Marginal), C, C- (Weak) and D (Poor) to E (Under Regulatory Supervision), F (In Liquidation) and S (Rating Suspended).

A Standard & Poor’s Insurer Financial Strength Rating is a current opinion of the fi nancial security characteristics of an insurance organization with respect to its ability to pay under its insurance policies and contracts in accordance with their terms. An insurer rated “AA” has very strong fi nancial security characteristics, differing only slightly from those rated higher. An insurer rated “A” has Strong fi nancial security characteristics, but is somewhat more likely to be affected by adverse business conditions than are insurers with higher ratings. Plus (+) or minus (-) signs following ratings from “AA” to “CCC” show relative standing within the major rating categories.

Moody’s Insurance Financial Strength Ratings are opinions of the ability of insurance companies to punctually repay senior policyholder claims and obligations. Moody’s uses a letter grade scale that ranges from Aaa (“Exceptional”) for the highest rating to C (“Lowest”) for the least favorable rating (i.e., Aaa, Aa, A, Baa, Ba, B, Caa, Ca, C). For classes Aa to B, Moody’s adds a numerical modifi er, from 1 (at the high end of the category) to 3 (at the low end) to indicate the approximate ranking of a company in the particular classifi cation. An “A” rating signifi es “Good” security with possible susceptibility to future impairment.
