PREFACE
Indian Railways is the principal catalyst in bringing socio-economic development of the Nation. The Railway network at every nook & corner of India helps connect person to person, resources to regions and inputs to industries.
The Railway network in Eastern India was first set up from Howrah to Hooghly in Eastern Railway jurisdiction in 1854, which at that time was known as East Indian Railway. Since the beginning of the journey Eastern Railway has gone through stages of metamorphosis with the passage of time and developed as a principal transporter of passengers & freight in Eastern India.
Eastern Railway at present has a route kilometre of 2686 with four divisions viz. Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol & Malda. The Zonal headqarter as well as all the divisional headquarters of Eastern Railway are in West Bengal.
Eastern Railway is a pre-dominantly passenger carrying Railway. It has India's second largest suburban rail network. Eastern Railway also provides long-distance passenger traffic service by running large number of Mail/Express trains.
Coal is the main freight traffic of ER as it occupies 60% of the volume of freight commodities. Apart from coal, this Railway also transports iron and steel products from Durgapur & Burnpur, stones from Pakur & Jamalpur, cement from Durgapur and a lot of other merchandise including jute, tea, automobile, agricultural products etc. POL installation at Rajbandh & Budge Budge, cement plant at Durgapur and the industrial complexes at Asansol, Durgapur, Chittaranjan, Burnpur, industrial suburban area of Kolkata & Howrah are served by this Railway.
Goods train as well as passenger train services are also run between India & Bangladesh via Gede-Darshana and Petrapole-Benapole routes.
The Originating Revenue Loading of ER during 2017-18 was 62 MT. The Apportioned Goods Earning was ` 4,519 Crs. and Originating Passenger Earning of ER was ` 2,668 Crs. during FY 2017-18.
Railways is now marching ahead towards a new regime, a new area of reforms & modernization for achieving self sufficiency, in order to set a new growth path. Our officers and staff are vibrant, responsive and dedicated to adapt with the changing scenario & market demand and fulfil the expectation of the passengers, freight customers and other stakeholders.
Besides, three other Zonal Railways viz. South Eastern Railway, North-East Frontier Railway and Metro Railway, Kolkata also have their network in West Bengal and have valuable contribution towards transport of passengers & freight and socio-economic development of this State.
It may be noted that the Budgets allocated to various projects are not apportioned statewise but reflect the cost of the project.
