    David Stowell, Chair

    International Committee

David Stowell began and ended his talk with the

quote “Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they

shall be called Children of God,” delivering an

inspiring and energizing reflection on the amaz-

ing Rotary Foundation potential for bringing peace to the world.

He began by telling the story of the carpenter who was asked to build a

wall to separate one brother from the brother he hated. Instead the

carpenter used the wood from the wall to built a bridge that brought

    them together.

David then reviewed the extensive range of violence, sickness, war, illit-

eracy, and poverty in so many places. And the divisions that exist. Fac-

ing these, he said, the world asks, “Where are the Peacemakers?”

Rotary reaches out with 6 services of response. A key focus is Peace and

Conflict Prevention and Resolution, a theme to which the entire month

of February has been dedicated. Dave quoted John F. Kennedy: “Peace

is a daily, weekly, monthly pursuit.”

Several District grants were celebrated, including one for farmers doing

organic farming in India, one for a planetarium for children in Tijuana,

others for bilingual hospice support, hearing aids for poor people, and

supply food for the poor both in our community and in Mexico. Dave

then announced that the club has become a Peacemakers club and that

the International Committee would lead the charge to wage peace. In

response to his talk, the club stood and gave a resounding applause.

Paul Dryman congratulated Pat McCoy for the Economic Forecast program’s success. He also wondered

why businesswomen in the club work pants while the men, like Nelson, wore kilts.

    My Story

    Tyaga Hebel

Sevak Khodabakhshian introduced his wife, Tyaga Hebel. Tyaga told her incredible story of how her

mother and her mother’s husband were killed in Mexico City shortly after Tyaga’s birth. She was kid-

napped at that time by their assailant, and smuggled into the US at age 1, where her birth father (who

turned out to be her mother’s assailant) struck a deal with a leader in a Hare Krishna ashram commu-

nity and abandoned her. Abused and in constant fear for her life, she always felt she didn’t belong

there and knew she needed to escape.

One of Tyaga’s teachers took her under her wing, but that teacher moved to California in 1986. Tyaga

was 12. The teacher made multiple requests to the leader of the ashram to have Tyaga sent to Cali-

fornia for a 2 week visit.

The request was denied many times. Finally, the teacher was able to leverage her request, having

information that the Leader was under investigation by the FBI for murder. Tyaga was finally allowed

to visit, and it was at that time that the teacher offered to adopt her. Her story continued as she

searched for her family which hit dead-ends, twists and turns, until she found her roots. Tyaga shared

an amazing, heart-wrenching story of courage and survival, and at long-last, love.

    FINE SESSION

Ed Jones was Fine Master and asked questions about presidential history. Those fined

were Adam Antoniskis, Darin Arrasmith, Larry Baker, Roger Benson, Robert Bianchi,

Marissa Buss, Nelson Buss, Robert Cabral, Jason Corey, and Lois Curran-Klein.

    HAPPY $$$$

    Greg Kusnierek carried the cup.

Pat McCoy raved about the half-page article in the ACORN that did a wonderful

story on the Economic Forecast program that the club put on. It included a pic-

ture of Chris Lamia and former member Rick Principe as well.

Hugo Roche reported that his facebook account had been hacked. That's the

one indicating that large dollars were yours for the taking if you were only to

send in a $500 application fee. This is nothing but a scam. There are no large

dollars available. However should anyone want to send him the $500 app fee,

that would be nice, he said.
