From the Desk of Fr. Beckman:As you are aware, October is Respect Life Month.
This is an opportunity for all of us to take a special
time to reflect on the many issues that demand our re-
spect as human beings made in God’s image. This is a
time to do some extra reading, extra reflecting, and extra thinking
about the awesomeness and incredible gift of each individual life.
I am always moved by former Pope John Paul II’s statement about
America. “America, you are beautiful and blessed. The ultimate
test of your greatness is the way you treat every human being, but
especially the weakest and most defenseless. If you want equal
justice for all and true freedom and lasting peace, then America,
defend life.” And so, as we celebrate “Respect Life Month” dur-
ing October, I would like to bring your attention to a new cultural
project that Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph. D., who is a co-founder of
the Center for Life Principles and former president of Gonzaga
University in Spokane, Washington, is promoting through his
book: Healing the Culture: A Commonsense Philosophy of
Happiness, Freedom and the Life Issues. Healing the Culture
presents the most comprehensive philosophy of the pro-life move-
ment in print today. This book changes the discussion on abortion
and euthanasia by linking the issues with the philosophical under-
pinnings of our culture and the principles and values by which we
live. More than an explanation of the life issues, this book pres-
ents a course in philosophy and a guide to enhance meaning and
purpose in life. This work addresses the connection between the
culture’s view of everything from happiness and success, to self-
worth, love, suffering, ethics, freedom and personhood, and
shows how our notion of personhood holds the key not only to the
concept of ourselves, but also to the future of rights and the com-
mon good. This book pulls together a multitude of perplexing
questions and presents them in a form readily understandable to
the general reader. It shows us how to escape the lethal attitude of
“I did it my way,” and get back onto the path of doing it the right
way, the Christian way. Spitzer shows in many practical ways
how we can transcend ‘ego-centric materialism’ to attain true hap-
piness. If this book were read, understood, and lived out by every-
one we could truly build a ‘culture of life’ that the Holy Father
calls us to. Please check out this website: Center for Life Princi-
ples or Life Principles: A Model for Teaching the Philosophy of
the Pro-Life Movement.

Redecoration Update CornerRiehle Church Decorating Group is still on track to finish the
painting/stenciling by the end of September. This means that the
flooring process will start in October. Our plan is to continue to
hold weekend Masses downstairs in the church hall. We appre-
ciate your patience and cooperation throughout this period as we
renew our worship space into a worthy and dignified house of
God.
If you would like to see pictures of the progress being made,
please visit our Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/St-John-the-Evangelist-in-Indepen-
dence-IA-631172953567063/
Also, we have noticed that our weekly giving has gone down
with the start of the redecoration project. We want to remind
everyone that if you attend Mass at either of our Cluster
parishes, please use the appropriate church envelope or write
your check out to the church you want your donation to go
to. We do make sure it gets to the correct church each week and
this is very important to remember with our redecoration coming
up. If you attend either church and put in a cash donation, that
money will stay with the church you attended that weekend.
Also, don’t forget that you can donate via EFT (Electronic Fund
Transfer). Just call the Cluster office and we will get you set up
(319-334-7191)!
Thanks to all who have helped to make this project possible!
Operation Christmas Child ShoeboxSt. Patrick Social Concerns Committee is sponsoring the Operation
Christmas Child Shoebox project again this year. We are offering
it to any parishioners that would like to fill a shoebox. If you want
to take part, shoeboxes, with instructions inside, are available on
the table at the church entrances. Please return the filled shoe-
boxes to the table by the weekend of October 26-27. A note and
photo is optional. The Social Concerns committee will pay the
$9.00 donation and take them to the drop off location unless you
would like to provide the donation for your shoebox. Thank you.
Mass for Mental Illness AwarenessThe 12th Annual Mass for Mental Illness Awareness will be held at
2 p.m. Sunday, Oct.13, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 120 5th St
NW in Cedar Rapids. Deacon Tom Lambert of the Archdiocese of
Chicago will serve as deacon at the Mass and will speak at a recep-
tion following. All persons with mental illness, their families and
care providers are invited to attend.
Trunk or TreatThe St. John Parish Life Committee will
be hosting a trunk or treat on October 27
(weather permitting) in the church parking lot
just north of Church (where employees/visitors park) after the
10:00 Mass. Children are allowed to wear their Halloween cos-
tumes (no devils, death or the such) to church. After Mass families
are invited to out to the parking lot where parish organizations will
have treats to pass out to the children.
St. John Cemetery Fall Clean UpIt is once again that time of the year for all flow-
ers, decorations and ornamentals to be removed
from St. John Cemetery. Please have all items re-
moved by the end of October. The Cemetery
Board will be starting a new Decorating Policy in
regards to flowers/decorations/ornamentals, etc. starting April 1,
2020. You will be able to find this information on the St. John
Facebook page, a bulletin insert, and Father’s announcements
after Masses starting the first of the year! We thank you for your
cooperation.

Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children
Pope Francis has said that respect for life is not just about the unborn child in the womb,
but also about the least of our brothers and sisters. Yes, it is even upon the undocumented
resident alien who has no voice but ours. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are all called to
protect the voiceless.
Let us pray...
Good and gracious God,
you blew into our nostrils the breath of life.
You are the One to whom we owe our very exis-
tence.
Give us the courage to take that unpopular position
of protecting those who have no voice,
the unborn child in the womb
to the person taking his or her last breath.
The life you have given us is a gift beyond measure.
Embolden us to speak the truth
about protecting the child, the elderly,
and the one without a voice in the public square.
With thankful hearts,
we ask all this of the One God,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Amen.
