Dear Parishioners and friends of St. Lawrence:

Though the upcoming changes have been quite a struggle for

me and I expect the actual implementation will be the same, I

am trying to accept the reality that it is coming. We can fight it,

which many of us have done, or now that the final plan has been

determined and is going to happen, how can we make the most

of it?

First, according to the information given, there is no

intention of closing any parish. That was the impression of

Logansport and Peru which are being formed into a pastorate.

The diocese’ response was that that was a misunderstanding as

there is no plan to close a parish. So, everything must be done

to strengthen the parish and that involves all of you.

For many years it has been clear to me that the strength of

the parish is in the laity – not the clergy – and this was even

before all the scandal. Look at countries in which the Church

has been persecuted or survived for centuries without clergy

under communist rule in the Soviet Union. It was the

grandparents who passed the faith on. The clergy come and go.

It is the laity through which the Church endures and perduces.

Your faith and constancy is that which has held it together

through every trial. The strength of the Church is the living

presence of Christ among you and through you. Jesus’ words

to His folowers, “whenever two or three of you gather in my

name, there am I in your midst.” There would be no Church

without you. So the question is “how can the bonds that unite

this community be strengthened?”

I fully support the idea of building on the three pillars of

Discipleship, Community, and Witness. Last week my focus

was on discipleship. This week is on community.

With each parish intact and maintained, we can strengthen

the bonds between the three parishes. It has been a pleasure for

me to get to meet and know people of the other parishes. There

are many good people in each parish and our lives can be

enriched by getting acquainted and knowing each other. We all

will be enriched by greater bonds between us. So often one of

my thoughts has been “if only everyone in the parish could get

to know all the good people I’ve gotten to know.” This has

been the greatest grace of being a priest and it is so rare not to

discover how the love and grace of God is at work in the lives

of others. That has convinced me that God is always at work,

even if unseen in the life of each person. To get to know others

is also to get to know God who is present in each. Grace is all

around us.

The goal of each of us needs to be “may I become one with

Christ.” This means to be united in mind, heart, will, and

spirit.” It means to be transformed by the Holy Spirit to be one

with Him. It means to be in “communion” with Him. It means

that we become one with Him as He is one with the Father.” St.

Paul said “it is no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives in

me.”

No matter what form the external structure takes, we

can all seek to grow in union with Christ and one another.

It is Jesus Himself on whom we must fix our eyes – or, if

not, in any structure we will lose our way. It was on Jesus

that Paul kept his eyes on Him crucified.

God Bless, Fr. Dave

I am a member of the Household of God. God is head of

this household.

Our experience of God

This week we celebrated the Feast of St. Therese of

Lisieux and St. Francis of Assisi. These two saints show

us that we can find God in small everyday events. For

example in little acts of kindness and in care of and for the

earth. God uses everything in our lives to draw us deeper

into love. It may not always seem that way. We may feel

like everything is dark or confusing. But that does not

mean God is absent. Prayer, liturgy, community, reading

the Bible help us to tune our hearts to God’s presence.

Pondering each day for a few minutes where Christ’s love

has been in our daily lives will help us notice God’s

presence in all our experiences. A question that can help

us at the end of each day might be: How have I

experienced your presence in my life experience today,

God? After pondering and noticing, offer your prayer of

deep gratitude and love.

From the desk of Bishop

In an effort to be transparent,

honest and open about what is

ongoing with the Uniting in Heart 2030 Pastoral

Plan, I’d like to begin providing regular updates that

you can read in your parish bulletin to stay up to

date. These updates will come from me or the

Uniting in Heart Core Team which is made up of

Father Ted Dudzinski—Vicar General, Deacon Mike

Mescall—Director of Technology, Planning and

Communications, Jeanne Lausten—Director of

Human Resources, and Gabby Hlavek—

Communications Manager and Editor of The

Catholic Moment. The updates will cover a variety

of topics, questions, feedback or basic information

about the plan. During the months of July and

August, we have been prayerfully reading, reflecting

and discerning the over 2000 pieces of feedback that

were received about the initial draft plan. Please

know that we are very grateful for your

contributions! We are sorry that we could not

address each one individually, but we took this

information, synthesized key themes and determined

how it could best be used to refine and improve the

plan. Earlier this week, the entire presbyterate

gathered with diocesan and parish leadership to

review the final revisions to the plan. We now plan

to release the final Uniting in Heart 2030 Pastoral

Plan in the October 6 edition of The Catholic

Moment. We ask for your prayers as our diocese

moves the plan forward and brings us out of

maintenance and into mission mode. We are eager to

(Bishop Doherty’s letter continued:)

live out the 3 Pillars of Mission, Community and

Witness that are the foundation of our 2030 Pastoral

Plan, and unite the entire diocese in the heart of

Jesus Christ as His disciples!
