This Sunday we begin our annual Pennies from Heaven Campaign. Please consider donating your coins and dollars to support local Respect Life shel-ters, clinics, and centers that give immediate and long-term care to Orange County women, men, and families in crisis. Obria Medical Clinics (formerly Birth Choice) is one such organization which will re-ceive some of the donated funds. Obria offers preg-nancy testing, ultrasound, STD testing and treat-ment, Well Woman care & exams , limited prenatal care, parenting education and counseling. St. Timothy will not be passing out baby bottles this year but will be taking donations after every Mass every weekend in October. Please contribute in the jar or baskets that will be in the courtyard. Any checks should be made payable to St. Timothy and reference Pennies From Heaven. Thank you for your support for our local respect life shelters and clinics.

F e a s t o f S t . T h e r e s e o f t h e C h i l d J e s u s Dear Brothers and Sisters, We begin my favorite month of October with this wonderful saint, the one who followed “little way” of doing all things for the glory of God. We will end with All Hallows Eve (Halloween) as we prepare to usher in the month of so many saints in November. In between, though, we are in the midst of the annual “Resect Life Month” proclaimed by our Church as the month to recommit ourselves to prayer, study, and action that deepens and expresses our belief in the inherent digni-ty of all persons from conception to natural death.

This first Sunday we will introduce the annual “Pennies from Heaven” program that raises money for the Re-spect Life centers in the Diocese of Orange. We won’t be giving out baby bottles for this, but rather will have containers for your donations at all Masses this month. In the bulletin and on our website there will be an article from the United States Catholic Bishops entitled: “Respect Life Month: Live the Gospel of Life”. On the following weekend will be another article: “Serving Moms in Need: Living the Gospel of Life”. The third weekend is World Mission Sunday and there will be a special collection for the missionary work of the Church throughout the world. Finally, on the last weekend there will be an article entitled “Catholic Priorities at the Polls”. One of the most powerful quotes from the Bible that I will try to follow this month, and will pray we might all consider, is from the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians (4:29-32). I don’t think it could be more timely: “Never let evil talk pass your lips; say only the good things people need to hear, things that will really help them. Do nothing that will sadden the Holy Spirit with whom you were sealed against the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, all passion and anger, harsh words, slander, and malice of every kind. In place of these, be kind to one another, compassionate, and mutually forgiving, just as God has forgiven you in Christ.” Your brother in Christ, Msgr. John

Live the Gospel of Life, Respect Life Reflection Twenty-five years ago, Pope St. John Paul II wrote that the Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus’ saving message to the world (Evangelium vitae 1). In taking on human flesh, dwelling among us, and sacrificing his very life for our redemption, Christ re-veals the profound dignity of every human person. This God-given dignity does not change with our stage of life, abilities, level of independence, or any other varying cir-cumstance. Rather, it is rooted in the permanent fact that each of us is made in the image and like-ness of God, created to share in the very life of God himself. The human person is a “manifestation of God in the world, a sign of his presence, a trace of his glory” (EV 34). And we must reflect this truth in how we act and how we treat one another. The truth of the Gospel of life is at the foundation of who we are as followers of Christ. In his earthly life, Jesus provided the perfect model for how we are to love our neighbor and live out the Gospel call: “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Mt. 25:40). Jesus calls each of us to “care for the other as a person for whom God has made us re-sponsible” (EV 87). The Gospel of life is intrinsic to the whole Christian life and foun-dational to the decisions we make on a daily basis. For, “the Gospel of God’s love for man, the Gospel of the dignity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and in-divisible Gospel” (EV 2, emphasis added). In his encyclical on the Gospel of life, Pope St. John Paul II recognizes the full range of threats against human life, from poverty and malnutrition to murder and war. He plac-es particular emphasis, however, on threats to life at its beginning and end—precisely when it is most in need of protection. In modern times, children in their mothers’ wombs and those approaching the end of their lives are certainly among the “least of these” in our world’s estimation. Practices such as abortion and assisted suicide tragi-cally reject the truth that human life is always to be cherished and defended with lov-ing concern. As the Church celebrates the 25th anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II’s prophetic en-cyclical, let us reflect on how we personally live out the Gospel: Do I talk about and act towards others as I would talk about and treat Jesus himself? Do I inform myself of the Church’s teachings and engage in the civic arena as first a follower of Christ? Do I sup-port and advocate for laws and policies that protect and defend human life? Do I help pregnant and parenting mothers in need? Am I ready to support a loved one nearing death? Through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, may Our Lord grant us the grace to truly and courageously live his Gospel of life.
