100th Anniversary of the Fatima Apparitions (Part 2 of 4)

Recall that in 1917 Our Lady appeared at Fatima, Portugal to Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia, for six consecutive months

beginning on May 13, telling them to pray the Rosary and make sacrifices for sinners. The message of July 13, 1917 relates

to the “secret” of Fatima, consisting of three parts. The first was a vision of Hell, which Sister Lucia says portrayed “demons

and souls in human form” plunged in “a great sea of fire” and “amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair” which made

the children “tremble with fear.” The vision of Hell was immediately preceded by these words of Our Lady: “Sacrifice your-

selves for sinners, and say many times, especially whenever you make some sacrifice: O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the

conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.”

In the second part of the secret Our Lady promised that peace would come through devotion to her Immaculate Heart,

and said God would punish the world if people did not repent from their sins, with a worse war to follow World War I

(which then was raging) as well as persecutions of the Church and the Holy Father. The second part of the secret included a

promise by Our Lady to come at a later time and ask for a Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays of each month

to convert Russia and bring about world peace. Also, Mary promised that the Pope would one day consecrate Russia to her

Heart, and that her Immaculate Heart would triumph. The third part of the secret was in a prophetic vision with a number of

scenes which included war and devastation, and the killing of a man “dressed in white” (the Pope). This part of the secret

was revealed publicly by the Pope John Paul II only in the year 2000, and it was apparently fulfilled in part with the at-

tempted assassination of St. John Paul on May 13, 1981, the anniversary of the first Fatima apparition by Our Lady.

In the apparition of September 13, 1917 Our Lady promised: “In October I will perform a miracle so that all may be-

lieve.” In the apparitions of October 13, Mary identified herself in these words: “I am the Lady of the Rosary;” then she said:

“Continue always to pray the Rosary every day,” and “Do not offend the Lord our God any more, because He is already so

much offended.” After these statements, Lucia says that she, Jacinta and Francisco saw a series of visions: the Holy Family

(Mary with St. Joseph holding the Baby Jesus), Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows, and Mary as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It

was during these visions that the so-called “miracle of the sun” took place, during which 70,000 people witnessed, for

twelve minutes, the sun dance, shoot forth colors, zig-zag across the sky and then plunge toward the earth, only to return to

its normal place. It had been raining all morning that day, but after the miracle of the sun, everything was dry!

Recall that in the apparition of July 13, 1917, Our Lady promised that she would later “come to ask for the consecration

of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays.” This promise was fulfilled

after Lucia had entered religious life, with two important apparitions. The first was on December 10, 1925 when Our Lady

appeared to Lucia, the then lone surviving Fatima seer, who at that time was a nun in Pontevedra, Spain. Mary appeared

with the Infant Jesus; she showed Sister Lucia her Immaculate Heart, covered with thorns, which she held in her hand, and

asked for reparation for sins which afflict her Heart by way of a great promise concerning “5 First Saturdays”:

Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by

their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of

death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months,

shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen min-

utes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.

The apparition concerning the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary occurred on June 13, 1929, while

Sister Lucia was in a convent in Tuy, Spain. Lucia had a vision while at prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the convent

chapel, during which Our Lady spoke to Sister Lucia: “The moment has come in which God asks Holy Father, in union with

all the Bishops of the world, to make the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, promising to save it by this means.

There are so many souls whom the Justice of God condemns for sins committed against me, that I have come to ask repara-

tion: sacrifice yourself for this intention and pray.” These words indicate that the consecration of Russia – and its conver-

sion in order to bring about world peace (per the July 13, 1917 apparition, second part of the secret) – is tied to reparation

for sins and conversion of sinners – which is what Our Lady asks of us with the “5 First Saturday” devotion.

On March 25, 1982, Pope John Paul II, in union with bishops throughout the world, consecrated the world, and Russia, to

the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Why has Russia not converted to the Catholic Faith, and why have we not seen the triumph

of Mary’s Immaculate Heart and the period of peace that she promised? We will discuss this in the next part.

SANCTUARY RENOVATION:

PHASE I COMPLETE; PHASE II TO FOLLOW

Our new altar is in (Phase I) and looks beautiful (the adoring

angels will be in next week, with some additional altar light-

ing). Our parish set aside $130,000 of parish funds for the altar

fabrication, the total cost of which was $156,000. Remaining

balance ($26,000) has been paid through individual donations.

Individual donations at this time total $77,260. If we sub-

tract $26,000 for Phase I (altar fabrication), that leaves us with

$51,260 for Phase II.

The estimated cost for Phase II is $140,000. That means we

need another $88,740 to pay for Phase II. We ask that people

who may have been waiting to donate toward the project wait

no longer. Here are estimated costs of the artwork/painting to

be done, which make up most of the cost of Phase II:

- painting two big murals at sides of altar: $20,000 each*

- painting the mural behind the altar (angels): $10,000*

- painting ten Carmelite saints: $5000 each

*One can donate part of the funds needed for these

paintings; any donation is most welcome!

And the estimated cost of removing the two statues in the

sanctuary (St. Francis and St. Catherine of Siena, patron saints

of Italy) and the marble backdrops, and mounting them on col-

umns, is $10,800.

Let us pray for the intercession of the great Italian artist, Bl. Fra

Angelico, that this project may give glory to God & Our Lady

of Mount Carmel!

Donations may be made by check, or online:

olmckenosha.org (scroll down to “donate”).

One may donate all at once or over time.
