Message from Fr. Pergjini- It is October 7, 2017, the feast of our Lady of the Rosary. As a child, I do have the most beautiful memories reciting the rosary at my grandparents’ house. Twice a year we would go to visit them, during summer and winter vacations. My childhood joy, and even later in my life, to visit my grandparents was special. The city where my grandparents lived and my dear parents were born is located near a big lake surrounded by impressive mountains. It was a long and very scenic ride. They lived in an old house surrounded by a beautiful garden. We arrived always in the evening, tired from the long bus ride and hungry. The dinner was always ready, made with love by our grandmother who was great cook. However, we knew very well that we could not eat without praying the rosary. My grandfather who always knelt during the whole rosary surrounded by the whole family remained as a powerful and inspiring image in my mind. As I go back to my childhood, thanking God for having in my life parents and grandparents who lived their faith not only with words but with faithful Christian deeds and treasuring those events of faith and love that nurtured my soul. They planted the seeds in my heart and soul to trust to our Blessed Mother by reciting the rosary. It is true that as a child I did not know the full meaning and the power of those Hail Marys but I did join them and other members of the family to enter into the peace and beauty of our Catholic devotion reciting the rosary. Bringing to my mind today the humble faces of my dear grandparents who were deeply absorbed by the mysteries of our salvation, reciting those Hail Marys brings me peace and trust thanking Almighty Father for placing my early childhood surrounded by the unshakable faith and humility of my grandparents. Their faces reflected the fatigue and the concerns of the day, but they never complained. They placed themselves and all of us into the hands of our Blessed Mother. After the rosary was finished, supper was served with love by my dear grandmother. She was the last one to sit and eat. They did not have a television, but they had a radio. After the supper, one of my aunts used to sing and others joined her as well. It seems that even the neighbors around had the same custom because you could hear them singing too. It was a very joyful atmosphere that I treasure with great longing even today. They were poor but very joyful in their spirit. After the night prayers, they gently used to ask me if I wanted to go with them early in the morning to attend the first Holy Mass at 6 a.m. celebrated by the holy bishop to whom I served as an altar boy. We left at 5:30 a.m. walking in those beautiful early morning days with pleasant weather of summer and sometimes the bitter cold of winter. They quietly moved their lips praying the rosary on the way to cathedral. They placed me in their midst holding my both hands. It was a very unique experience for me to remember the need for silence before Holy Mass.

As I share with you my childhood experience of the rosary, it is impossible to forget the historical event of October 7, 1571. The saintly Dominican Pope, Pius V, on his knees with millions of Catholics around Europe, prayed the rosary to save Europe from the attacks of the Ottoman Empire. It was on October 7, 1571 that the Muslim fleet at Lepanto was defeated. Since then Our Lady of the Rosary continues to be celebrated, encouraging the faithful to pray the rosary. The victory was dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. Even today there are many people who have the blessings to know the value of this powerful spiritual weapon against every kind of evil. I encourage those in desperate need to say the rosary as the best and the most powerful prayer to obtain what they are asking for. Saturday, October 7, 2017, the Polish bishops have urged the faithful to pray a massive rosary prayer crusade along Poland's 2, 000 mile border to pray for the salvation of their country, commemorating the historical defeat of Islam on October 7, 1571. I firmly believe in the power of the rosary. My personal childhood experience of the rosary, thanks to my grandparents, has been a blessing to share with others as others share with me the love and trust that we all have in the intercessions of our Heavenly Mother. We all hope that this beautiful devotion of our Catholic faith becomes a faithful daily prayer for our families, those who are dear to us, for peace in our country and the world, for those who have died, especially the innocent victims of Las Vegas and their families, for the victims of hurricanes and earthquake, and all those who live in despair. Please, please, make a commitment for 15 minutes to say the rosary, alone or with your dear ones. It is October, the month of the Holy Rosary. Pray for us Holy Mother of God! That we may become worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen!

LIVES OF THE SAINTS SAINT TERESA OF AVILA

(1515-1582) Teresa was born at Avila, Spain, in 1515 with the family name of Teresa de Cepeda y de Ahumada and was of Jewish descent on her father’s side. It was the golden age of Spain, because of the vast amount of that precious metal that poured into Spain from Latin America and also because of the large number of excellent spiritual treatises published during that period. As a child she was very devout and even wished for martyrdom at the hands of the Moors, but during adolescence her fervor cooled somewhat and she was for a time a typical vain and sentimental girl. At the age of 20, however, she was greatly moved by reading the letters of St. Jerome and she decided to become a nun at the Carmelite monastery of the Incarnation at Avila. Shortly after her entrance she became seriously ill and had to be sent away for treatment. She returned to the monastery after her cure but she was practically an invalid for several years. After reading the Confessions of St. Augustine and being deeply impressed by an image of the Ecce Homo, Teresa, at the age of 40, resolved to dedicate herself seriously to the practice of prayer.

During her lifetime she made more than 40 new foundations of Carmelite nuns of the strict observance. -Saints of the Roman Calendar
