Message from Fr. Pergjini- A few days ago I received an e-mail written in Italian from a friend of mine

whom I met for the first time in Zurich, Switzerland. Since then we kept in touch and we see each other occasionally.

Father Heine Pfeiffer, S.J. is his name. He used to teach full time Christian art at the Gregorian University in Rome, a

Jesuit University. Now is retired but still continues to teach part time in different universities in Europe and North

America. In his powerful e-mail he shares with me a very unique event of his life, the 46th anniversary of his first Holy

sacrifice of the Holy Mass celebrated in Tubingen, Germany. On the same day of his first celebration it was also the

day when for the first time in human history the first man was walking on the moon. Yes, I do remember that day. I was

only fourteen. His family was watching with great curiosity and amazement that unique event while my friend, Pater

Pfeiffer, as I call him, was celebrating the Holy Mass. For him the Holy Mass was more important than watching the TV

with the rest of his family. It was a very intimate and powerful moment with Christ he said. Christ little by little taught

him that the Holy Mass is the greatest event in the whole human history and in the history of all religions of the universe.

In a very amazing way he applies the laws of Isaac Newton spiritually and has understood that the death of Christ on the

Cross with his unbearable pain sustains the whole universe in a perfect equilibrium. Christ creates on earth a special

place which Pater Pfeiffer calls an “ecological corner” where relationships are prepared starting from plants and human

beings with a pure air. And this is the only and the right definition of life in relationship with the Holy Spirit. He

concludes his e-mail saying that he is sending me a small meditation of his memory of the first Holy Mass, but also how

important is for him the sacrifice of the Cross on the Altar. For me it was a very powerful reflection. I read and reread

his e-mail I and feel his remarkable ways to see beyond the moon, beyond human power, technology and ego, to see the

heart of Christ in the beauty and the power of the Holy Mass. His very deep and powerful spiritual friendship with

Christ is reflected in every aspect of his daily life, especially when he celebrates Holy Mass. The simplicity and

elegance of his prayerful manner, the solemn and graceful elevation of the body of Christ, the excellent reading voice,

and the reverent genuflections, really reflect Divine Liturgy. One can really understand why he preferred to be alone

with Christ celebrating Holy Mass rather than joining his family and millions and millions of people who were watching

that unique event. The image of the first man walking on the moon is forgotten, while the celebration of the Holy

Sacrifice of the Mass is daily offered in many Catholic altars throughout the whole world, and in one of them my good

Jesuit friend still continues to celebrate with a deep faith as he did 46 years ago. As I am sharing this beautiful reflection

on the power of this sacred celebration, I thought that this experience would help many of us to meditate better on the

Gospel of Saint John, chapter 6, the bread of life, which is used during the Sundays of this month. I hope and pray that

we who daily or weekly attend Holy Mass can be more aware of the gift of this Holy and divine celebration offered to

us.

Finally, I would like to end my article with a beautiful and ancient prayer from Catechism of the Catholic Church: “O

sacred banquet in which Christ is received as food, the memory of his passion is renewed, the soul is filled with grace

and a pledge of the life to come is given to us.” Amen! Thank you Pater Pfeiffer for inspiring me to translate and share

with others your e-mail.

A E

Before coming to Mass, take care to dress in clothes that demonstrate reverence which are appropriate for the celebra on of the Holy Sacrifice. An appropriate dress simply means not wearing shorts and sleeveless tops.

♦ Whenever you enter or leave Church and any me you pass the tabernacle, remember to genuflect while facing the Tabernacle. ♦ Whenever you pass the Altar, remember to bow to it. ♦ Before entering the church, make sure you are not chewing gum. There are two garbage cans in the rear of the church where you

can dispose of it.

We thank you for your coopera on and restoring the sense of the sacred in our worship at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We must remind to ourselves that Eucharist is not merely a sign or symbol; It is the actual Flesh and Blood of Christ. It is Jesus Christ, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity.
