Free Tipping For Yard/Garden WasteAfer successfully piloting the project in 2014, the

RDCK is pleased to announce that the seasonal ‘Free Yardand Garden Waste’ program is now permanent! Every yearfor the months of April and October residents in the EastWaste Sub-region will be able to deposit their yard andgarden waste at no tipping fee at the following facilities:

    • Creston Landll, Crawford Bay Transfer Station,Boswell Transfer Station

Te RDCK anticipates that the continuation of thisprogram will reduce occurrences of yard waste burning, thereby improving local air quality. “Every spring and fallthere is a noticeable drop in air quality due from peopleburning their yard and garden waste,” says East Sub-regionResource Recovery Chair Garry Jackman. “Last April atthe East sub-region facilities, 373 loads of yard and gardenwaste were brought in for deposit that may otherwise havebeen burned. To me, that is a success story.”

Yard and garden waste materials that qualify for free tip-ping fees include hedge clippings, weeds, shrubs, and shruband tree branches less than 15 centimeters (6”) in diameter.Materials that do not qualify include tree stumps, noxiousweeds*, rocks, sand, soil and fruit & vegetable material.

Free Car Seat ClinicTe Castlegar Public Health Nurses will be hosting a

Free Car Seat clinic. Te clinic will be held September16 at the Castlegar Fire Hall. Te rehall makes an ideallocation, and the public health nurses appreciate the sup-port of the re department. “We are very lucky to have theuse of the rehall so the clinic can happen rain or shine,”said Denise Talarico, PHN at the Castlegar Health Centre.“Tey just pull the re trucks out and the cars come rightin. Tey are all under cover so that if it is rainy or miser-

able the clinic can still take place.T

    e

    re

ghters are verygenerous in lending us the use of the hall.”

Certied child passenger safety educators will checkout the car seat, how it is installed in the vehicle, and howthe child is secured in the seat.Tey will also look at recalllists and check out what is the best place for the seat to beinstalled in each individual car.

“We all learn from it. It’s not an inspection process, itis a learning process. It can be so easy to make errors as

to ow you actua y put your seat in t e car an ow yousecure the child in the seat,” Talarico, Statistics tell us thatin BC, 1400 children under the age of 9 are injured and4 are killed in vehicle crashes each year. Research showsthat seatbelts and car seats, when used properly, are themost eff ective tools in preventing injuries and deaths incrashes.

Appointments are necessary to utilize the clinic andcan be made by calling Castlegar Public Health at250-365-4310.
