ANNUAL BILL KING MEMORIAL DERBY, Balfour, willbe cancelled for this year due to the current condition ofthe fish stocks in Kootenay Lake. We will re-evaluatethis for next year, but presently, we feel that for the goodof the lake it is the right thing to do. Children Art At Oxygen Art CentreOxygen Art Centre is pleased to present the work of

grade three and four elementary students working throughthe Artist In the Classroom program. Students from twolocal elementary schools have been working with localartist, Jennifer McAuley to create a series of one of a kind, handmade, art cards to trade, exhibit and collect. Eachweek for the last few months the students have taken partin a workshop session series that introduces young artists

to unique forms of visual expres-sion. Each student has created a

series of art cards that they cankeep or trade. “By creating a col-lection of art work,” says McAu-ley, “Students learn the valueof one of a kind art, as opposedto mass produced, impersonalimages and art making.”

Te art making sessions weretailored to work with the studentscurrent curriculum: Mr. Wheel-er’s grade three and four class at

Blewett Elementary used theirstudies of the properties of lightand sound as a jumping off point, while Ms Sabourin’s grade threeclass at Rosemont Elementaryfocused on buildings and cities asa source of inspiration. Te ArtistIn the Classroom, ArtStarts pro-gram is a grant program for prin-cipals, teachers and PAC groupsto bring professional artists into

the classroom to collaborate oncreative ways to explore curricula.

Now the students involvedhave a chance to share their cre-ations with the larger communityand the opportunity to experi-ence being part of an art open-ing and exhibition at OxygenArt Centre. Teir work will beon exhibit from May 1 to 3, andthe public are invited, not only to

view the art but to come and cre-ate and trade their own art cards!Te show opens on Friday, May 1from 5 to 7 pm and gallery hoursare Saturday & Sunday from 10am to 1 pm. Oxygen Art Centreis located at 320 Vernon St (backalley entrance) in Nelson. Admission isfree and everyone is welcome.

Breath of Spring CampaignSince 1994 donors like you have donated $1,289,735.78

to keep our operating room furnished with state of theart medical equipment. You are the reason that we havea thriving OR at Kootenay Lake Hospital, where we areable to perform orthopaedic surgeries such as kneearthroscopy, nger and hand surgeries, removal of platesand screws, carpal tunnel repairs and bunion surgeries.Where we are able to perform all obstetrical and gynae-cologic surgeries such as C-sections, trial forcep/standby

C-section deliveries, post partum haemorrhages, hysterec-tomies and all surgeries involving the female reproductivesystem. Not to mention general surgeries such as herniarepairs and varicose vein surgery.

You’re probably wondering how much our operatingroom is used. For some of you this may be a surprise, butthe OR is being used 40 hours per week, which is over2,000 hours per year. And once again, it’s your generositythat makes this happen.

Tis year, the foundation isfocused on another vital piece

of equipment for the operatingroom – a new surgical table. Tesurgical table is where patientsare placed for their surgeryand the new table will supportimproved care for the proceduresperformed at KLH.

OR nurse Sue Basek says, “Tesurgical table is the most impor-tant piece of equipment in theOR. It’s used for almost every

procedure we perform, includingobstetric, gynelogical and ortho-paedic procedures.”

Basek goes on to say, “Tere arelots of technical details I couldgive you about why we in theOR are so excited about this newpiece of equipment. Tat it allowsus to put patients in a rendel-burg, or head down position, aswell as foot down and up posi-

tions and side to side positions.Tat it adjusts up and down toaccommodate the height of thedifferent surgeons, and that theside bars allow for the attachmentof accessories such as arm boardsand stirrups. Basically, this tableis an essential piece of state of theart equipment that will make lifeeasier and more effi cient for theOR staff and the patients we treat.”
