In loving memory of Margaret John (1921-2015)

Salmo resident, Helen Margaret John (Dawson) passed away peacefully

on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, three days before her 94th birthday.

She and her husband, Edward, settled in Salmo more than 70 years

ago where they raised their three children, Tom John (Robin) from

Toronto, Merilyn Hicks (Robin) from North Vancouver, and Jennifer

Mobbs (John) from Salmo. Margaret and Ed were blessed with eight

grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Margaret was born in England and moved

to Canada when she was eight years old.

She and her parents settled in Alberta,

started a farm, and then, when she was

fourteen, moved to South Slocan, BC.

She met Ed while playing badminton

and married him in 1941 during the 2nd

World War. They celebrated their 74th

wedding anniversary in April.

In 1945, after the war, the couple moved

to Salmo and opened the Salmo Cloth-

ing Store where she and Ed worked for

21 years. Later, Margaret worked as a

journalist for a Trail newspaper and as a

teller with the Salmo Credit Union.

Margaret was very active in the Salmo community. She was a found-

ing member of the Salmo Community Memorial Church and for manyyears was a board member on the Church Committee. For the past

forty years, Margaret was a Lay Reader in the Anglican Church. She

started the Girl Guides and Brownies in Salmo and was a Guide leader

and later the Commissioner of Guides for the Salmo Emerald District.

Margaret belonged to the Salmo Pythian Sisters and eventually became

the Grand Chief. For many years, she represented the Mothers of Can-

ada by placing the Silver Cross Mother’s Wreath at the Salmo Remem-

brance Day Ceremonies.

Margaret was very physically active in school, achieving many trophies,

and spent many hours prospecting in the mountains around Salmo. One

of her many pastimes was playing bridge – enjoying a social time with

family and friends as well as playing the more serious duplicate game.

Her love of travelling took her across Canada, Europe, South America,

and the Caribbean.

She loved spending time with her family and had a very special relation-

ship with her many great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all.

Her funeral will be held at the Salmo Community Memorial Church on

Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow.

Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra are a collection ofmusicians, linked by common sonic journeys and famil-ial ties. Te acoustic ensemble has wandered from theunderground of bohemian Victoria, in Canada’s lush westcoast, to a new, rened sound crafed by years of constantperforming and touring together.Tey weave their storieswith guitars and violins, with accordions and bass, withmelodies and music makers gleaned from their wander-ings. “With an iPod, you don’t even have to listen to arecord anymore. You don’t even have to listen to a songanymore!” said TMO guitarist Kurt Lowen in the Mon-treal Gazette. “People are so bored immediately, which iskind of sad, and they crave new things all the time.” Hereare the troubadours to remind you that music (no matterwhat kind of device it ends up on) could not exist withoutwarm bodies in search of harmony.

“We can easily do a sit-down theatre show that’s all intri-cate and listening based” says TMO member Ian Griffi ths,“as easily as we can a Saturday night at a big folk festivalwhere everybody is there to party and dance. I love havingbig sweaty dance parties, but what I love more than any-thing is having diversity.” Teir music draws on amencoourishes learned in Spain, African percussion, Bluegrassand other Roots music from across the Americas. How-ever, the band is still a product of the west coast where itwas born, Griffi ths says “As much as we draw inuencesfrom all over the place, there is something west coastabout our music.”

Tis year’s annual showcase of Selkirk College talent onNelson’s Tenth Street Campus will feature an alumna whostarted to piece together a blossoming international popstar career while studying in the West Kootenay.

Te Selkirk College Gala 2015 will take place on Novem-ber 28 at Mary Hall and feature a delicious three coursemeal prepared by the Professional Cook Program studentsand served by the Resort & Hotel Management Programstudents.Te black tie event features entertainment by stu-dents in the Contemporary Music & Technology Programand this year’s class will be joined on stage by Selkirk Col-ege alumna Kiesza. “We’re thrilled to have Kiesza coming

back to join us on this special evening,” says music programnstructor Gilles Parenteau. “It wasn’t too long ago that she

was a student in our classrooms and performance spaces.It’s going to bring a special touch to what is always a greatevening of ne food, community building and music.”

Kiesza arrived to Selkirk College from Calgary as an18 year old bursting with talent. Honing her craf in thestudios at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus, she graduated in2009 and continued her music studies at Berklee Collegeof Music in Boston. In 2014, Kiesza arrived on the inter-national stage with her hit song Hideway which featuredan incredible video that has more than 250 million viewson YouTube. Over the last two years, Kiesza has releaseda full-length album, captured three Juno Awards, touredthe world and collaborated with some of the world’s big-gest stars like Rhianna. She recently took part in a concert
