Legion Poppy CampaignEvery year, the Legion conducts the Poppy Campaign to

honour those who serve, and to raise funds in support ofveterans and their families. From the last Friday in Octoberto Remembrance Day, all Canadians can be a part of thecampaign. Wear a poppy, attend a ceremony and show yourrecognition for those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Canadians are ercely proud of our veterans and duringthe period leading up to Remembrance Day, millions ofCanadians wear a poppy as a symbol of national pride and

respect, a visual pledge to never forget.During the Poppy Campaign, thousands of Legion

members from coast to coast to coast volunteer their timeto distribute poppies and raise millions that will supportveterans and their families in need. While poppies are dis-tributed freely, the Legion truly appreciates the generousdonations to the Poppy Fund 3 in support of serving andretired veterans and their families. To further support ourveterans – past and present anyone can become a memberof the Royal Canadian Legion.

RDCK Reduces Wildfire RisksTe RDCK will undertake six new fuel management

projects this which aim to reduce the risk of wildres.

A total of 31 hectares will be treated around the Blewettre hall, Morning Mountain Recreation Area, BrentKennedy School, Chatham Road, Goose Creek and PassCreek Park. Te work is expected to be completed byApril 30, 2016.

Crews from Debri Resources Ltd. and West Arm Silvi-

culture will cut small understory trees, prune taller trees, and clean up woody debris from the forest oor. Tiswill help reduce the amount of available forest fuel andlimit the possibility of forest res reaching residences, infrastructure and other assets. Te pruning will alsohelp stop ground re from getting into the tree canopy.Small woody debris will be piled and burned or chippedon site. To do this work safely, access to the areas will berestricted at times. Closure signs will be in place.

Fuel treatments have shown to mitigate the hazards offast spreading wildre and improve forest health. Prop-

erty owners can also reduce the risk of

re on their ownproperties. Te homeowner FireSmart manual is a greatresource: http://www.bcwildre.ca/prevention/docs/homeowner-resmart.pdf

Tese projects are being funded through the Union ofBritish Columbia Strategic Wildre Prevention Program, the RDCK and the Columbia Basin Trust.

In loving memory of Margaret John (1921-2015)

Salmo resident, Helen Margaret John (Dawson) passed away peacefully

on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, three days before her 94th birthday.

She and her husband, Edward, settled in Salmo more than 70 years

ago where they raised their three children, Tom John (Robin) from

Toronto, Merilyn Hicks (Robin) from North Vancouver, and Jennifer

Mobbs (John) from Salmo. Margaret and Ed were blessed with eight

    grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Margaret was born in England and moved

to Canada when she was eight years old.

She and her parents settled in Alberta,

started a farm, and then, when she was

fourteen, moved to South Slocan, BC.

She met Ed while playing badminton

and married him in 1941 during the 2nd

World War. They celebrated their 74th

    wedding anniversary in April.

In 1945, after the war, the couple moved

to Salmo and opened the Salmo Cloth-

ing Store where she and Ed worked for

21 years. Later, Margaret worked as a

journalist for a Trail newspaper and as a

teller with the Salmo Credit Union.

Margaret was very active in the Salmo community. She was a found-

ing member of the Salmo Community Memorial Church and for manyyears was a board member on the Church Committee. For the past

forty years, Margaret was a Lay Reader in the Anglican Church. She

started the Girl Guides and Brownies in Salmo and was a Guide leader

and later the Commissioner of Guides for the Salmo Emerald District.

Margaret belonged to the Salmo Pythian Sisters and eventually became

the Grand Chief. For many years, she represented the Mothers of Can-

ada by placing the Silver Cross Mother’s Wreath at the Salmo Remem-

    brance Day Ceremonies.

Margaret was very physically active in school, achieving many trophies,

and spent many hours prospecting in the mountains around Salmo. One

of her many pastimes was playing bridge – enjoying a social time with

family and friends as well as playing the more serious duplicate game.

Her love of travelling took her across Canada, Europe, South America,

    and the Caribbean.

She loved spending time with her family and had a very special relation-

ship with her many great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all.

Her funeral will be held at the Salmo Community Memorial Church on

Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow.

Memorial Church Society, Box 835 Salmo, BC V0G 1Z0.

Have a Shot of Tequila! If you have never seen Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra

perform, or just haven’t seen them recently, you have beenmissing out. Luckily for you Rossland Council for Artsand Culture is bringing them to the Miners Hall on Satur-day, November 14.

Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra are a collection ofmusicians, linked by common sonic journeys and famil-ial ties. Te acoustic ensemble has wandered from theunderground of bohemian Victoria, in Canada’s lush westcoast, to a new, rened sound crafed by years of constantperforming and touring together.Tey weave their storieswith guitars and violins, with accordions and bass, withmelodies and music makers gleaned from their wander-ings. “With an iPod, you don’t even have to listen to arecord anymore. You don’t even have to listen to a songanymore!” said TMO guitarist Kurt Lowen in the Mon-treal Gazette. “People are so bored immediately, which iskind of sad, and they crave new things all the time.” Hereare the troubadours to remind you that music (no matterwhat kind of device it ends up on) could not exist withoutwarm bodies in search of harmony.

“We can easily do a sit-down theatre show that’s all intri-cate and listening based” says TMO member Ian Griffi ths,“as easily as we can a Saturday night at a big folk festivalwhere everybody is there to party and dance. I love havingbig sweaty dance parties, but what I love more than any-thing is having diversity.” Teir music draws on amencoourishes learned in Spain, African percussion, Bluegrassand other Roots music from across the Americas. How-ever, the band is still a product of the west coast where itwas born, Griffi ths says “As much as we draw inuencesfrom all over the place, there is something west coastabout our music.”

Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra have entranced audi-ences at folk festivals around the country and on Novem-ber 14 they will bring their unique, eclectic sound to theMiners Hall stage in a performance that you do not wantto miss! Doors open at 7 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm. Tick-ets are $20 available at Out of the Cellar in Rossland, theCharles Bailey Teatre Box Offi ce in Trail and online atrosslandartscouncil.com, RCAC members get $2 off .
