The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.

— Mark 1:15 THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are,

and Jesus cries out “Repent!” before he calls his new followers. “Come after me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today’s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. FOLLOW ME AND I WILL MAKE YOU FISHERS OF MEN” We find ourselves in the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time. The Gospel of our Mass today tells us how Jesus began to pick the group of loyal followers, the apostles, who would accompany Him during all His life on earth and who would form the nucleus of the Church that Lord founded. The first apostles called were the brothers Andrew and Simon Peter. Afterwards the Lord saw the brothers James and John, sons of Zebedee and He also called them to form part of this group. The four men responded quickly to Jesus. They were

fishermen. Jesus passed by and saw them working. The first words Jesus said to these men were: "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." To each one of us the Lord also says; "follow me" every day. And He says more. He asks us to do so with the same eagerness and generosity that Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John showed. Each Sunday at Mass as we hear the readings from Sacred Scripture we should renew our promise to follow Christ, the true Word of God. Like the apostles Andrew, Simon, James and John, and as baptized Christians, we share in the apostolate of Christ as "Fishers of men ". The most basic and effective form of being a fisher is through the TESTIMONY of Christian living. Giggle: At morning Mass, the Pastor announced to the Congregation that the Bishop had just appointed him to another parish. After Mass, a woman came up to him and expressed her dismay at his leaving. "Oh, I`m sure the bishop will send you someone who is far better than I am ". The pastor tried to console her. "No", the woman replied, "that won`t happen and can`t happen". "Why not?" asked the priest, unable to resist the temptation to hear a compliment in the superlative about himself. "Because", the woman said, "I have seen five pastors now in this parish, and each new pastor was worse than the last." God Bless You! Fr Innocent Subiza

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
