HUMAN CONCERNS

TREASURE CAMPAIGN

Our thanks to those families who have completed their commitment card. If you have not returned your card we encourage you to complete and return your card and be counted in this year’s campaign. Please be generous as you can and support the parish and its programs. If you would prefer you can complete your card on line by visiting our website at http://www.stbernardparish.org/2018.

You can also “grow” your commitment by signing up for online giving or electronic payment. We have two options available, through your checking or savings account via WaterStone Bank or you can use your credit card. We have parishioners who contribute weekly, monthly, quarterly, semiannually and annually. To get started visit our website at http://www.stbernardparish.org/Online-Giving. If you sign up for online giving to start in January, a generous donor will match your annual amount by 10%. How great is that! If you have any questions please feel free to call Christine Meyer in the church office. THANK YOU

ST. BERNARD’S GIFT GIVING CLUB

January – OTC medicines, cough drops, aspirin, band-aids, small packages of Kleenex, lip balm, etc.

It’s flu and cold season! Let’s help give some comfort to our needy brothers and sisters! Your “gifts” will be delivered to the clinic at: REPAIRERS OF THE BREACH. This is a daytime shelter, resource center and clinic for homeless people located on 14th & Vliet. Its mission is to “bring forth homeless people to act

collectively to change the present conditions under which

they live, through advocacy and education and direct

action.” It also becomes an “Emergency 24-hour Warming Room” when temperatures become life-threatening. If your generosity allows, we will also

deliver your “gifts” to other shelters who request these

items. Please place your items in the baskets on either side in the back of Church. In addition to this special collection for this shelter, St. Bernard Parishioners provide sandwiches made twice a month. Thank you!

Wauwatosa Catholic School serves a diverse community of learners by teaching our students to live Christ centered lives, to embrace Catholic values, and to excel academically, while developing leaders who have a passion to serve and create a better world.

Dear Supportive Parishioners, Thank you for your support of Wauwatosa Catholic School. Please consider volunteering for a basketball concession or admission shift on a Saturday at Wauwatosa Catholic. It is a great way to help, view students in action, and meet school families you may see in church. All volunteers must have their Safeguarding requirements met. Thanks for your consideration. UNDERSTANDING SENIOR ISSUES

IS THERE ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE?

There’s nothing like a new year to inspire us to be healthier, to get those projects done, to break an old habit or start a new one. A fresh start.

As we walk into the possibilities of 2018, what is it we want to do different this year? A fresh start ought to come with greater personal awareness and meaning. Here’s an idea…what if we acknowledged that there may be another perspective other than our own.

I’m not suggesting you entertain ideas that conflict with who you are and what you believe at your core. The distance between some of our firmly held beliefs and someone else’s perspective isn’t always that vast. But without an intent of listening with an open mind we never get to discover that.

We bring our “suitcase” of experiences to every conversation. We have it sitting next to us when we listen to someone share their story. How hard is it to listen when we are diametrically opposed to what they’re saying?

Someone once told me they seek out people who disagree with them because they learn more about their own beliefs when they’re challenged. They feel there’s nothing less inspiring than listening to someone who completely agrees with them. I thought that was pretty profound. So I tried it. Here’s what I learned:

• Just listening to someone else’s perspective didn’t particularly inspire me. But when I asked questions of why they believe it and how they got to that conclusion, it became impactful. Now I wasn’t just hearing someone spew words, it had a human component to it.

• When you listen, you really get to know someone on a different level. That also makes you more forgiving.

• When I listen intently to someone else’s perspective, I give myself the opportunity to become more connected to them. I open myself to the possibility that I don’t have it all figured out.

A lot of what I do every day is listen to people, to families, as they navigate challenging circumstances. Every time I sit with a family I’m reminded of the validity of perspectives other than mine. Learning how to listen openly has been a blessing in my life. I wish you that same blessing.

The evening at Blessed Savior Parish will begin with the rosary at 6:30 pm followed by Mass at 7:00 pm celebrated by Bishop James Schuerman. In addition there will be a collection of diapers to assist families raising newborns, infants and toddlers. Please bring donated diapers to Mass on January 22. Christ Child Society will distribute the donated diapers in the community. Through age 2 1/2 a baby uses approximately 7,000 diapers.
