TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PASTORS CORNER Nothing quite conveys the passing of time as intensely as the sudden thought that the long-awaited summer and its slower pace is slowly transitioning into shorter days as well as cooler mornings and evenings. This of course means that we will have to return to a stricter work schedule after this final long weekend of summer. Thus it is fitting to think about the nature of our daily work. We all know people who live to work, and sometimes you do not have to look for them, because they reside in your household. Un- fortunately, the modern temptation is to measure our worth by work and productivity. It seems that we are only as meaningful as the work we do. Often it is done to the detriment of ones family, not to mention ones health and even ones life. Such an unhealthy attitude is due to the gradual erosion of an appreciation of Sunday – the Lords Day – whereby we can see the world and our worth in a new way -- the way of the saint and the poet. These sacredmoments, which often take place in solitude and silence, can be more meaningful to us than an entire week of hard work, because they make us stop to realize that we can find satisfaction in comfort without luxury, freedom without indulgence and purpose without frenetic busyness. In other words, since the beginning of creation, work was made for man, not man for work, and Jesus reminds us of this perennial truth in the Gospels. Fr. TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PASTOR’S CORNER

Nothing quite conveys the passing of time as intensely as the sudden thought that the long-awaited summer and its slower pace is

slowly transitioning into shorter days as well as cooler mornings and evenings. This of course means that we will have to return to a

stricter work schedule after this final long weekend of summer. Thus it is fitting to think about the nature of our daily work.

We all know people who live to work, and sometimes you do not have to look for them, because they reside in your household. Un-

fortunately, the modern temptation is to measure our worth by work and productivity. It seems that we are only as meaningful as the

work we do. Often it is done to the detriment of one’s family, not to mention one’s health and even one’s life.

Such an unhealthy attitude is due to the gradual erosion of an appreciation of Sunday – the Lord’s Day – whereby we can see the

world and our worth in a new way -- the way of the saint and the poet. These “sacred” moments, which often take place in solitude

and silence, can be more meaningful to us than an entire week of hard work, because they make us stop to realize that we can find

satisfaction in comfort without luxury, freedom without indulgence and purpose without frenetic busyness. In other words, since the

beginning of creation, work was made for man, not man for work, and Jesus reminds us of this perennial truth in the Gospels.
