Most of us were baptized and raised as Catholics, learning about prayer and Church and Sacraments. We learned the basics of Christian doctrine. And maybe, after some years of questioning or wandering or indifference, we reached a point in our adult life when we began to take our Catholic faith seriously. Perhaps, like Eli in our first reading, priests and nuns have been strong influences. Perhaps the example of parents, relatives, and friends have been a factor. But when our faith is challenged, when the call to discipleship is really difficult to live up to, we need to have a source to which we can return - time and again - to be refreshed, renewed, and revitalized. I am a believer that the Spirit of Jesus is very much alive today and that chaos itself is the catalyst for change. We are living in a glorious moment of history where the old is still crumbling and the new is being rebuilt from the shattered. Let us find hope amidst life's chaos; Jesus has died, Jesus has risen, Jesus will come again ... and again ... and again. Jesus is born again every time a person turns away from the negative, sinful, and selfish to let his Spirit live anew. For us, there is no other way, no other source. Joe Cece

The Patrician 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 18, 2015

Come and See!

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said,

“Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said

and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following

and said to them, “What are you looking for?”

They said to him, “Rabbi, where are you staying?”

He said to them, “Come, and you will see.”

For most of us, the call to follow Jesus has not been very dramatic.

Most of us were baptized and raised as Catholics, learning about prayer and Church and Sacraments.

We learned the basics of Christian doctrine. And maybe, after some years of questioning or wandering or indifference,

we reached a point in our adult life when we began to take our Catholic faith seriously. Perhaps, like Eli in our first reading, priests and nuns have been strong influences.

Perhaps the example of parents, relatives, and friends have been a factor. But when our faith is challenged, when the call to discipleship is really difficult to live up to,

we need to have a source to which we can return - time and again - to be refreshed, renewed, and revitalized.

I am a believer that the Spirit of Jesus is very much alive today

and that chaos itself is the catalyst for change. We are living in a glorious moment of history where the old is still crumbling

and the new is being rebuilt from the shattered. Let us find hope amidst life's chaos;

Jesus has died, Jesus has risen, Jesus will come again ... and again ... and again. Jesus is born again every time a person turns away

from the negative, sinful, and selfish to let his Spirit live anew.

For us, there is no other way, no other source.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges the two disciples with this question: “What are you looking for?” What are we looking for in our world today? Are we looking for peace?

If we are looking for peace, are we listening to what the Lord is telling us about the Spirit of peace dwelling within us? Perhaps a radical change must take place within us in order for there to be peace. The changing of Simon’s name could be symbolic of the challenge to change issued by Jesus when he calls us to follow him. Gerald Darring

POPE FRANCIS On Consecrated Life

They (religious) need to live and behave

in a truly different way, recognizing one’s weakness and sins,

but acting with generosity, detachment, sacrifice,

forgetting oneself in order to take care of others.

At the heart of the church is vocation. The earliest idea of what is today called “church” starts with the Greek word ekklesia, which is only found twice in the Gospels, both times in Matthew, and means those who have been “called out.” Jesus “calls out” all who follow him to share in his ministry in different ways.

Before Jesus even preached, healed someone, or performed a miracle, he called people to follow him. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, after his baptism and temptation in the wilderness, the first thing he did was to call two sets of brothers. He asked Simon and Andrew and then James and John to follow him (Mark 1:16-20). And that is the church in its simplest terms: the followers of Jesus Christ. Vision Vocation Guide 2015

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE

God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and

daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

As your pastor, I wish to say “thank you” to all those parishioners and friends of Saint Patrick Parish who have thus far participated in our Capital Campaign. I am pleased to report that the initial response has been very encouraging. Since we are hoping to complete the pledge stage of the Capital Campaign by the end of January, I would like at this time to offer this reminder and invitation to those who, because of the activities of the Christmas and New Year’s Season, have not yet returned their Pledge Form to please do so in the near future. Remember that all pledges may be fulfilled over the course of three years.

Father John

ore than fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his now famous “I have a dream” speech to an

estimated 200,000 people gathered on the Washington Mall facing the Lincoln Memorial. Millions more watched it on television. Since then, hundreds of millions around the world and several generations not alive when that scene was first transmitted in grainy black and white have experienced King’s powerful call to America to live up to its own ideals and principles for all its citizens - regardless of color.

e know now that it almost did not happen. King had before him a carefully crafted speech titled, “Normalcy,

Never Again.” Toward the end, singer Mahalia Jackson called out to him, “Tell them about the dream, Martin,” and he set aside his prepared text and began to preach.

o say it was a prophetic sermon delivered at a critical crossroads in the nation’s history does not fully convey its importance as a timeless and global summons to the human dream of

self-determination all people want for themselves and for their children. Commemorating it reminds us that its demands are just as urgent and relevant today as they were in 1963. King’s prophetic voice was silenced five years after his famous speech. But dreams live on as long as there are dreamers willing to advance the cause of equality and a more just world.

That is why we tell everyone: “Come and see!” In every human situation, marked by frailty, sin and death, the Good News is no mere matter of words, but a testimony to unconditional and faithful love. It is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others … being close to those crushed by life’s troubles … sharing with the needy … standing at the side of the sick, the elderly and the outcast. “Come and see!” Love is more powerful, love gives life, love makes hope blossom in the wilderness. Pope Francis April 2014
