You may recall that the vestry approved a deficit budget for 2014 of -$120,000. As Beth mentioned in her communication to the parish, we have been blessed with some incredibly generous gifts in December and are closing the gap from our projected deficit. In fact, we are optimistic about being able to end the year without a deficit. As of the publication date, we do not have the final tally of how we ended the year, but it was looking very positive. An end-of-the-year report will be provided in the next issue of The Messenger. Thank you for your continued support of St. Mark’s and its ministries. Here’s to a wonderful 2015!

10th Annual Christmas to the Street BBQ By Todd Allison, Director of Youth Ministries and Erin Hughes, Assistant Director of Youth Ministries

T he weekend before Christmas is always a busy one at St. Mark’s, and for the

last ten years, it has also become a weekend of fellowship and outreach. Christmas to the Street began as a small barbecue meal, prepared offsite, and offered to homeless and near homeless on the front lawn of the church. Over the years the event has grown, turning the meal into something truly blessed by the grace of God.

In keeping with the vocation of St. Mark’s and embracing our partnership with Haven for Hope, Christmas to the Street has continued to grow each year. Ten years later, what began with 50 meals has grown to over 1500 served at three locations between St. Mark’s and the Haven for Hope campus.

Christmas to the Street has grown from a simple youth event to one that combines the talents and efforts of not only our youth and their friends but the entire Parish community. From the coordinated efforts of working with vendors to order supplies to the weekend and meals themselves each task is scheduled and executed with a love for our neighbors and the community of San Antonio at this special time of year.

As Friday night fell and the parking lot was taken over by barbeque pits, youth from 6th-12th grades gathered inside to take on tasks in preparation for Saturday’s meals. Close to 40 youth this year spent Friday night bagging pickles and onions, dividing up the roughly 2000 cookies that had been baked in the kitchen earlier in the week, stocking goodie bags, and organizing the donated blankets to offer Saturday. Back outside in the parking lot, the No Ties Allowed men’s group fired up the pits and prepared roughly 1000 pounds of brisket to throw on the smokers for the night.

When the morning approached, the day kicked into high gear as youth unable to attend the lock-in joined the ranks following breakfast, and Gosnell Hall was transformed to welcome our guests for lunch. Thanks to the all night efforts of our group in the parking lot, volunteers arrived to begin slicing up the now perfectly smoked briskets. As the serving lines were set and stocked with brisket, tamales, red beans and rice, and sausage hot off the grill, the youth were tasked with various assignments and lunch was served. But Christmas to the Street 2014 had really only just begun.

While youth welcomed and served our lunch guests, the kitchen crew continued slicing the brisket and began to pack food for delivery to Haven for Hope. Coolers were loaded up and then delivered to the

campus, along with a crew of volunteers from St. Mark’s. Once at Haven for Hope, the groups split into two, where half headed to the main dining hall in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank and the others served a meal at St. Vinny’s Bistro in partnership with St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Thank you to all of those who planned, organized, prepared, served, and were a part of the 10th annual Christmas to the Street. Without our many volunteers, it just isn’t possible. A very special thank you to Ruby Merrill, Pat Bridwell, Gene Alderman, Joel Martin, and Craig Stokes for their efforts along with the Youth Group. And a hearty thanks to the parents, staff, parishioners, and friends who have made Christmas to the Street part of their holiday tradition. Thanks to Rev. Knowlton for your blessing and support, and to the church leadership and the many financial contributors, without which this outreach opportunity could not happen. Thank you all.

Planning for our 11th Christmas to the Street is already underway. We welcome your input as we make plans!

Music from St. Mark’s

Women’s Glee Club

For Christmas this year, the St. Mark's Choir adopted four families from the school where our soprano staff singer Ana Hernandez works. With generous support from the congregation, we raised over $3000 that was put toward purchasing much-needed items for our families. Additionally, members of the choir visited Ana's school and sang a 30 minute concert for the arts students. The highlight of the day was joining the school and church choirs together in singing 'Let there be peace on earth.'

Eastertide: Rector’s Forum: Being a Christian in an Increasingly Secular World How do we live out our Christian Life in a world that no longer easily supports this choice? How do we live out daily life and work in a way that honors our life in Christ? This class will explore themes of secularism historically as it relates to our daily lives.

Join us live into an Easter life as we look at our deep roots in the Celtic tradition. April 12 Connecting with the Celtic Past: Who were the Celts? What are the key elements of Celtic spirituality? Why does this speak so strongly across the ages to us today? April 19 Connecting with and through the saints May 3 Connecting with Creation: How can the Celtic tradition lead us so see creation as the "first cathedral"? What can we learn from their ability to perceive Christ's presence in nature? May 9 Retreat and Ceilidh, Bishop Jones Center May 10 Connecting the daily with the eternal May 17 Connecting with the Outer World: The Celtic saints were the Great Evangelists of history, sailing away, trusting in the Spirit, bringing Christianity and learning to the countries of Western Europe, that were struggling under the dark ages.
