Changes big and small have been met with openness, all while staying in touch with our long and rich history and traditions, which have shaped us to be who we are. This kind of change is no small task! We, the people who are St. Mark’s, are called to recognize that the soil in which we grow has been loosened. Some feel a little ill at ease, some feel more relaxed, others perhaps feel left aside or perhaps left out. Loose soil makes good matter for things to grow, and familiar resistance to growth might take a differing shape. Be sure of one thing: God is in the midst of what is happening around us. Circumstance is important, but God’s presence is primary and very real. As we continue this year together, the changes will continue. God is present along the journey. Be listening as God works not just in our corporate life, but also in our individual lives in 2014. What does God have in store for you? Will there be changes in your life, your routine, your heart as the soil is loosened? This requires the biggest transition of all: being God’s people, and not just our own. Last January, we as a congregation had just experienced a joyful Christmas season with the return to our newly restored Church: our worship space renewed and refreshed, new sound and lighting, new organ, and a newly oriented altar, facing the congregation. Little did we know that on the horizon was more change and transition. And in the months of 2013 came many changes: an interim rector, a new assistant, new staff members. We began a new adventure as the people who are St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Calling a new Rector is not unlike looking for a new spouse. What do we want, what do we need? Will we find the right person? This year has shown the depth of love and devotion that this community has to one another. Changes big and small have been met with openness, all while staying in touch with our long and rich history and traditions, which have shaped us to be who we are. Dina Aboul Saad and William Smith Search Committee Chairs

Your search committee is hard at work. We’ve been meeting weekly since September to prepare ourselves to engage with Rector candidates. Doing what? We’ve shared our stories with each other; we’ve done formation work around what it means to be faithful stewards, mindful of the needs, concerns, and prayers of our entire community; we’ve discussed the major themes of the parish profile; and we’ve formulated questions that we will ask all candidates. With the recent receipt of candidate names from the Bishop’s office, we gathered to discuss initial impressions and evaluate which to invite into a discernment process with us. Many of the candidates forwarded by the Bishop were from either our Diocese or from the Diocese of Texas. Other candidates were from across the United States. Early this month we mailed packets including our invitation to engage in this process along with a request for the information we will use in determining which candidates to visit. We expect to hear from candidates who are interested by the middle of January.

We have completed the first nine steps in our search process; the remaining steps include: 10) Search Committee evaluates serious candidates

against parish profile and committee’s criteria. 11) Search Committee conducts pre-visit training. (areas

of focus, process for collecting information to share with entire committee)

12) Search Committee begins to visit candidates in their churches.

13) Search Committee narrows list of finalists to invite to visit St. Mark’s.

14) Search Committee recommends one candidate to the Vestry.

15) Vestry sets terms of the call and issues the call. 16) Search Committee, Vestry, and Senior Warden form

a transition committee to support him or her. Committee members are glad to receive your comments and questions, though we will be unable to answer any specifics about candidates to protect their privacy.

Come be a part of and join the St. Mark’s Gryphons’ Cycling Club on their First Annual Winter Ride. We will be doing a 36-mile ride that begins in the dog-park parking lot at McAllister Park on January 11th, 2014 at 9 am. The ride runs along the Salado Creek Greenway Trail to Southside Lions Park (and then back to McAllister Park). A little known gem of San Antonio, this is a beautifully scenic ride with woods, waterways, bridges, and wildlife—deer, hogs, squirrels, water fowl... The ride is relatively flat with lots of curves and turns and NO automobiles. For further details, contact Don Lucas at [email protected] or 210-392-7721.

Epiphany comes from the Greek word Epiphania meaning manifestation or revelation. Epiphany is the day that we celebrate the visit of the Wise Men bringing gifts to the Christ child. By visiting the Christ child, the kings “revealed” Jesus to the world as Lord and King. Epiphany is also a season of the church year in which we celebrate the divinity of Jesus beginning with Jesus’ baptism and ending with the Transfiguration. The central portion of the new Epiphany Frontal is a 36” x 56” Belgian tapestry of the Three Kings presenting their gifts to the Virgin Mary and the Christ child. This tapestry was purchased from the Gift Shop at Exeter Cathedral in Devon, England, where our St. Mark’s choirs sang at Choral Evensongs and Choral Eucharists this past summer. To accent the lovely tapestry, a Gold Silk Damask fabric in the Tudor Rose pattern was selected. The Gold Silk Damask fabric that was chosen complements the colors in both the tapestry and the sanctuary. The bottom of the frontal will be trimmed in Gold and Indigo Blue fringe. Cathy Dawson gave of her time and sewing talents to transform the tapestry into a full frontal. A full frontal is an altar covering that is a floor-length hanging, the length of the altar, usually in the liturgical color for the day or season of the Church Year. We are very thankful to Cathy for undertaking this project during the busy Advent Season. The concept for the Epiphany Frontal came from Jim Bliek who noticed the beautiful tapestry in the Exeter Cathedral Gift Shop while on the choir trip. Jim returned from England and spoke with fellow Altar Guild

members about an idea to use this tapestry to make an Epiphany Altar Frontal. The idea gained support and was presented to the Altar Guild Memorial Committee at a meeting in September. The Memorial Committee, comprised of past chair persons Barbara Ward, Kathy Lawrence and Susan Wilson, approved the expenditures from the Altar Guild Memorial Fund, for the construction of this new frontal for the

Epiphany Season, as well as the purchase of paraments to make an Epiphany set. These new paraments: pulpit hanging, the Bible markers on the eagle, the burse and veil that dress the chalice on the altar, and the clergy stoles have all been ordered from CM Almy in the same Gold Tudor Rose Silk Damask fabric chosen for the frontal. The Tudor Rose pattern is a symbol of purity and joy. A single crown or three crowns can be liturgical symbols of Epiphany. Gold cross and crown symbols outlined or “couched” with a contrasting color of Indigo Blue will adorn the pulpit hanging, the Bible markers, the chalice veil and the clergy stoles. These items have arrived and will be revealed on January 5th. There are several people who advised, offered opinions and contributed to the decisions of the creation of the new Epiphany Frontal and coordinating sanctuary set. We are thankful to many people. The persons owed the most gratitude are no longer with us. Through their Charitable Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation, Leon O. and Mary Jane Lewis gave gifts to the Altar Guild Memorial Fund designated for altar hangings and linens. It is with deep gratitude and thanksgiving that we carry out the Lewis’ wishes. We hope that the sight of the Epiphany Frontal will bring joy to all.

By Patrice Oliver, Altar Guild Chairperson

This tapestry "The Adoration of Magi" will be converted into a frontal on the altar for the Epiphany Season.

New Epiphany Frontal

On January 5th a new altar frontal will be dedicated at St. Mark’s for the Season of Epiphany. The beau-

tiful new Epiphany Frontal will be given by the St. Mark’s Altar Guild in “Thanksgiving for the St. Mark’s Choirs’ Residency at Exeter Cathedral in July of 2013”. The Epiphany Frontal will adorn the altar through-out the Season of Epiphany that ends March 2, 2014.

New Year’s Resolution

Bring your children to church and Sunday School every Sunday in 2014 and volunteer to teach or be a substitute in Sunday School or Chapel! The answer to the question “When is the right time to plant a tree?” is “twenty years ago”. When your children are older and have a firm foundation of church attendance and knowledge of our faith, you’ll be glad you planted and supported those seedlings in 2014!

If your child has out-grown Lego building blocks, consider giving them to St Mark’s. They will be used to re-create Bible scenes and spark discussions. Instead of gathering dust in your closet, these blocks will be used as a tool for helping build a foundation of faith.

Lego donations welcome

St Mark’s Episcopal Church enthusiastically welcomes children as participants in worship. Children learn to worship by worshipping. Encourage them to participate in the liturgy, follow along with the bulletin, sing the hymns, and put something in the offering plate. There are loose-leaf notebooks with the Sunday Paper Jr, listening sheets, and crayons available from any usher. There is a Nursery available on the first floor of the Parish Hall for children 5 years of age and younger. At the 9:00 service, we offer children’s chapel so kids can hear the gospel message for themselves – children follow the cross out during the sequence hymn and return at the peace. Discuss the worship service with your children on the way home from church – they often receive more from the service than we might expect!

Young people at worship

As you take down Christmas decorations, please bring us the Christmas cards you’ve received. Our children can use them for crafty projects next December! Bring them to Gail Jackins any time you’re at church, thanks.
