She is currently chair of the Parlor Flower ministry, and a member of St. Martha’s ministry and a lector. Manette says what she values most at St. James is, “Its history, traditions and the sense of community it brings to each one of us, all of which renews and inspires us to do God’s work.”

Caroline Ross was raised in Baton Rouge and at St. James. She attended the Day School and then went on to graduate from Episcopal. She and her husband, Stewart, have been active members

at St. James since 1997 when they were married. They have one son, Warren, who is an acolyte. Caroline is a speech/language pathologist in the EBR Parish School System. Allen and Charlotte are both graduates of the Education for Ministry course at St. James, and Allen is a musician in the As You Are service. He serves as director of the St. James Food Pantry, and coordinates the Summer Sounds at St. James concert series, working closely with the Center for Spiritual Formation in setting up the series. Allen has served for four years as a Stephen Minister and is now a Stephen Leader.

He is a cradle Episcopalian, attending St. Martin’s Episcopal High School in Metairie from kindergarten through high school. He graduated from USL with a BA in economics, and then spent four years in the Air Force. Allen retired from the U.S. Customs Service as the Port Director of Customs in New Orleans in 1999. Both of his daughters now live in Baton Rouge and his two older grandchildren attend Episcopal High School. Allen says, “St. James has provided the inspiration, guidance and instruction for my spiritual development. We should continue our emphasis on religious and spiritual guidance and education. We must focus on stewardship and the proper allocation of our resources to meet the needs of our church and the many ministries that benefit our extended community. We must always serve those in our community who are in distress.”

Andy McCall was born and raised in Baton Rouge and is a long-time member of St. James. He and his wife, Julie, were married at St. James in 2007. Their two-year-old son, Everett, was

Vestry Candidate Bios, cont’d from page threeassisted with the Welcome Committee, Guild of the Christ Child, Vacation Church School, and children’s Sunday school. She graduated from LSU and is employed part-time with ENVIRON International as an environmental consultant. Amy says, “St. James has been an important part of my spiritual life and a loving, welcoming environment for my family. I would be honored to serve the parishioners of St. James as a member of the vestry.”

Bob Israel says, “Thank you very much for consideration to the St. James vestry. I have been a member of the church since 1976. Over those years, I have had the honor to

serve three terms on the vestry and the Day School Board of Trustees, twice. Under the rectorships of Bishop Jim Coleman, Father Francis Daunt and Father Rocki Proffitt, the best accomplishment was the selection of Father Mark Holland.”

Katherine “Kaki” Heiligenthal was born and raised in Austin, Texas, before moving to Baton Rouge. A “cradle Episcopalian,” she has been a member of St. James since 2010 where she has been

involved in the Altar Guild, Wedding Guild and Associate Vestry. She will graduate from the Education for Ministry four-year program in May. Kaki holds a BA degree in Mass Communication from LSU and currently works as the Director of Marketing and Development for Friends of the Baton Rouge Zoo. Aside from her work at the church, Kaki is a four-year member of the Junior League of Baton Rouge and most recently served as the assistant chair for a committee dedicated to determining the feasibility and means to develop a community diaper bank. “I’ve found a true home at St. James in both its community and my personal spirituality — its traditions, culture and beauty have truly captivated me. My vision as a vestry member would be to honor these fundamental realities while attempting to bridge the gap to many of my millennial peers,” says Kaki.

Linda Gibson and her husband, Ben, have been parishioners of St. James since 2000. Their twins, Abigail and Bennett, were baptized here in 2004 and are currently in the fifth grade at the

Day School. Linda has served as treasurer on the Associate Vestry, the Day School Parents Guild treasurer and is currently the treasurer for the Day School School Board of Trustees. Linda graduated from LSU in 1996 with a degree in accounting and attained her CPA license afterwards. She is a partner at TWRU CPAs and Financial Advisors. Linda has grown up in the Episcopal church and is grateful for St. James to be a part of her family’s life.

Honey Vordenbaumen East is a lifelong member of St. James, having been baptized, confirmed, and married here. She is married to Randy East and is the mother of two daughters and

a stepson and the grandmother of five wonderful grandchildren. Honey is a retired teacher and principal in the East Baton Rouge Schools where her students and teachers experienced great academic success, including the highest award offered by the U.S. Dept of Education, the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The St. James Church community has been at the center of her spiritual formation from childhood through the present, experiencing the love of Christ as a child through weekly worship, the love of the Sunday School community, St. James EYC, and the children’s choir. As an adult, Honey has served as Sunday School teacher, Director of Christian Education, Vacation Bible School director, youth group leader, and Eucharistic Minister. She has also served on the diocesan Christian Education board, the Camp Hardtner staff,

the St. James Vestry and Associate Vestry, and the St. James Day School Board of Trustees. Honey’s desire is, “To continue to answer the call of servant ministry and to participate in discerning God’s call to St. James as we prayerfully seek to love and honor Him as a church community.”

Margaret Culbertson and her husband, Pat, have been members of St. James for more than 30 years. She grew up in Dallas and has a BA in psychology from the University of Texas at

Austin and a master’s in social work from LSU. She worked in public mental health and non-profit organizations and now is retired. She currently serves as program committee chair for the Center for Spiritual Formation, and leads Meditative Yoga classes, a program offered by the Center, as well as a Visiting Eucharistic Minister, lector, and is a member of the Altar Guild, St. Martha’s Guild, and the St. Joan of Arc Study Group. Margaret has served on the Associate Vestry, twice on the vestry, once as clerk, on a Rector Search Committee, a Stephen Minister and leader, chair of the Parish Hall and the Outreach and Welcome Committees, and on stewardship committees. She is also an EfM graduate. In the community, she has served as board chair for Volunteers of America of Greater Baton Rouge, on the Symphony Board, and president of her neighborhood garden club. Margaret says, “St. James offers so many opportunities to discern and develop our spiritual gifts, to serve our church and the wider community, and to nurture each other along our common journey. It is a joy and a blessing to be a member of this community of faith. Those who have gone before us have done a remarkable job in being faithful stewards of this beautiful historic church, while also developing facilities and programs to meet current needs. We must continue in that tradition.”

A vestry member should be at least 18 years old, a confirmed member of record of St. James Parish for a minimum of two years, faithful and consistent in attendance at worship services, generous in giving and growing in personal stewardship, furthering personal spiritual growth, regular in attendance at meetings of the vestry, serving on one or more committees or ministries of the church and/or the vestry, participating in the annual stewardship drive each year, abiding by and supporting vestry decisions in a positive way, attending church-sponsored events and programs.

Presenting the Associate Vestry SlateDon R. Capron, Jr. is a native of the Baton Rouge area and a local real estate appraiser. He is married to Kerry Boyd Capron. They have two children, Cade (11) and Katie

Sue (9). Cade graduated from the St. James Episcopal Day School and is now at Episcopal School; Katie Sue is in the fourth grade at the Day School. Don has served on the vestry, Associate Vestry, Stewardship Committee, the Center for Spiritual Formation board, and most recently, the Day School Board of Trustees. He states “Out of all of the committees I have served on, the Associate Vestry is the one that I had the most interaction with parishioners and where I met many of the people whom I call friends today”.

Megan Campbell grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana where she was a member of St. Mark’s Cathedral and also attended St. Mark’s Cathedral School from kindergarten through eighth grade.

She is a 2002 graduate of Texas Christian University. Megan and her husband, Jimmy, joined St. James in 2008 when they relocated to Baton Rouge. She is active in the St. Mary’s Mom-to-Mom Ministry as well as Bible Study 2.0. She and her husband have three daughters, Charlotte, Ryan and Bridget, two of whom were baptized at St. James, and one who lays in the beautiful Columbarium outside of Bishops Hall.

Paul Buller grew up in Zachary, Louisiana, and has been a confirmed Episcopalian and member of St. James since 2009. Paul and his wife Trish, an Episcopalian since birth and native of

Texarkana, Texas, live in Baton Rouge with their two daughters Marion and Audrey, both of whom attend St. James Episcopal Day School. Paul attended LSU, graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering and is currently the Civil/Structural Principal Engineer and Department Manager for the Baton Rouge branch of Richard Design Services Inc. Trish also attended LSU, graduated with a degree in Graphic Design and is the Design Manager at Community Coffee.

Betsy Hurst grew up in Woodville, Mississippi where she was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She and her husband, Clint, joined St. James as newlweds in 1999. In 2005, they moved to

St. Francisville where they were members of Grace Church, but they returned to Baton Rouge in 2013 and rejoined St. James. Betsy graduated from LSU in 1998 with a BS in Elementary Education and this is Betsy’s ninth year to teach at St. James Day School, where she currently teaches fourth grade. She and Clint have two daughters who attend St. James: Sally (8), and Ann Baine (5).

John Soule grew up in Pensacola, Florida where he was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. After receiving a Civil Engineering degree from The University of Alabama in 2004, John moved

to Birmingham, where he started his career in construction. In 2012, John and his wife, Anna Catherine temporarily relocated to Baton Rouge along with their two children, Jack (5) and Mary Barton (2). As a result of the warm welcome the Soules received by St James, as well as the community, the family decided to remain in Baton Rouge. John is a Senior Project Manager for Cajun Constructors.

Chad Toups, a Thibodaux native, has been a member of St. James since 2006. He and his wife, Robin, have three children, all baptized at St. James: Grant (7), Annadele (5), and James (18

mos.). Chad graduated from LSU in 2002 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and is an engineer at Dow Chemical in Plaquemine.

Robin Toups is a life-long Episcopalian, baptized and confirmed at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Bovina, Mississippi. Robin and her husband, Chad, have been members of St. James since 2006.

Their three children were baptized at St. James: Grant (7), Annadele (5), and James (18 mos.). Robin graduated from LSU with a degree in Chemical Engineering and attended LSU Law School. She is an attorney with Taylor, Porter, Brooks & Phillips.

Mary Pesses grew up in Covington, Louisiana. She graduated from Wofford College and earned a master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Tennessee. She and her husband, Josh, moved

to Baton Rouge four years ago from New York City where she practiced social work. She is currently at home raising their two daughters, Margaret (6) and Louise (4),

the eldest of whom is a kindergartener at St. James Day School. Mary is involved in the St. James ECW and is co-chair of the church’s lenten Gumbo. She also serves on the board of Volunteers of America Greater Baton Rouge.

InvItes You to explore our lIfe and MInIstrIes Messenger

The

We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.

Increased costs to meet new postal regulations and fees have forced us to terminate automatic mailing of The MESSENGER to parish households. Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, additional information and reference materials, and more. If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick one up and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!

Joan of Arc Study GroupSusan Rolfs hosts the Wednesday, January 7 gathering of the Joan of Arc Study Group, at noon. Barbara Bacot will present the lesson on John and The Apocolypse.

All women of the parish are invited! R.s.v.p. to Susan at [email protected] or Nina Broyles at [email protected].

Creating Common Good: January 22-24, 2015Economic inequality in the United States is a pervasive, overwhelming issue. Our society is increasingly made up of have and have-nots, and this consistently widening gap represents a condition decried by the prophets, forcefully addressed by Jesus, and singled out by a number of contemporary voices in economics and public policy as a serious but correctable obstacle to human thriving. Many of us worry that we are complicit in a system that perpetuates economic inequality, and we feel uncomfortable and tense because this complicity goes against our deeply held Christian values about social justice. Many avoid the topic because taking a stand against economic inequality is difficult, and we don’t know what we can do – as individuals and as the Church – to effect change in a broken system.

The Trinity Institute program, provided by the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation in live simulcast, will include the Most Rev. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury; Cornel West; and Robert Reich, among other. Read more at http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/trinity-institute/2015/what’s-ti2015

Trinity Institute has released four mini-documentaries (10-12 minutes each). These features examine economic inequality in different parts of the world and look at creative and effective responses from churches and communities, along with group leader guides providing discussion questions for use in a group or individually in preparation for January’s conference.

Go to ChurchNext.tv and click on “Browse Catalog” and look for the Creating Common Good logo. You’ll need to create an account, but viewing each episode is free by using the discount code “TI2015.”
