“P eop e of inf uence“Behold , I make al lthings new !” This is thetriumphant declarat ionof King Jesus at the endof the Book of Revela-t ion. As we look forwardto a “New Year” to the“beginning” of “2011,”we must remember that
such designations are purely arbitrary. InChina, the New Year wil l be celebrated on
February 3rd
. In Muslim countries , i t wil l be celebrated on November 26th, and Jewswill celebrate i t on November 28 th. In real-i ty, January 1, 2011 won’t be discernablefrom December 31, 2010. New years don’tcome from the designations of men, nomatter the impressive mathematical andastronomical gymnastics employed toarrange our calendars. Even then, anextra s ix hours can’t be shoe-horned in, but must be relegated to the mother of al l
duct-tape solutions, Leap Year (the Onewho asked, “Which one of you by worryingcan add a s ingle second to his l i fe?” mustlook at Leap Year and laugh). In 1582, thecalendar had gotten so fouled up that 10whole days were deleted just to get back ontrack. No, an era isn’t “new” because wesay i t is . This is consistently proven by the“New Year’s Resolution.” Despite our mosthonest evaluations of the past year and out best intentions for the next , “resolution” f or
last ing change comes from a place outsideourselves. Real newness is found only in theOne through whom all things were made andwill be remade. Jesus is the One who makes things new. Paul said, “If any man is inChrist , he is a new creature. The old is gone, behold, the new has come.” This newnesspours into our present existence in Christthrough the Spirit from eternity future. Forthe Christ ian, every moment is a “new year,”every second is infused with the grace of
what wil l be. We l ive as beings from the
future; we alone can lay claim to that whichis truly new. This gives us confidence forl iving in the present precisely because weare not defined by i t . I t does not hold pow-er over us. When the Gestapo officers cameto Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s cel l to takehim to the place of execution for his resis-tance to the Nazi regime, he whispered to aninmate, “This is the end . . . for me, the beginning of l i fe!” C.S. Lewis reminds uthat the entirety of our earthly l ives barely
comprises the “preface” of the total i ty of ourexistence in Christ . The moment we step intoeternity, into the future, into the truly new,“Chapter One” has just begun! Comfortedand chastened by the comprehensive real i tyof the eternally new available now in Christ ,let us l ive each moment in l ight of what is tocome. Over every t ick of the clock, let Jesusdeclare: “Behold, I make al l things new!”
