1840 : THE F IRST CAMERA CREATEDThe first camera was invented by Alexander Wilcot. Without knowing it, he changed the history of photojournalism. Without this invention, the stepping stone of photography would have never started. By using this 1840’s camera, people were able to begin documenting the history of our country and capture the first news story recorded.

1930: STROBOSCOPIC FLASH SYSTEMThis flash system was created by Dr. Harold Edgerton in 1930. Being able to take multiple pictures of the same object a made it easier to capture every single movement without missing a second. For photojournalist, this was used to their advantage. With the craziness of trying to take the right picture, they could set this flash and be able to capture everything all at once. This was definitely a mildstone in photography as well as photojournalism.

1950: F IRST BUT TON CAMERAThe first button camera was something that made the lives easier for those photographers trying to capture an image quickly. The only downside to this creation was that it was only able to capture still photos. For photojournalist, this was still a very newly created innovation that allowed photographers to take an image in the press of a button.

1980: F IRST VIDEO CAMERAJerome H. Lemelson was one of the creators behind this incredible handheld recorder. For journalism as a whole, this really changed the whole ball game. Now not just images were being taken, but live footage was being used to tell stories locally and globally. For photojournalism, capturing real emotions and actions now made their work much more relatable for their viewers.

2000: FIRST CAMERA PHONE

The first camera phone was created in Japan by Sharp Corporation. This advanced technology meant that in any given moment, a photograph could be taken with the simplicity of using a cell phone. For photojournalist, this opened up the door of opportunity to capture a photo on the go.

2005: F IRST FULL-FRAME DIG ITAL SLR

SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. What this means for photojournalism is that now the photographer standing behind the camera can see exactly what the lens sees. This is phenomenal in the sense that these images are extremely high definition and clear.

2016: WATERPROOF GO PRO CAMERAI decided to use this camera as the most current up to date creation in technology because these small cameras are highly versatile. I have posted a video taken by a photojournalist covering breakouts of Ebola. These small cameras not only record but take images from amazing angles. As seen in the image to the left, it can be used hands free, which for a photojournalist can really make their job easier.
